Crazy P Curate Volume Four (B-STOCK)
Cat: CRAZYP C4. Rel: 01 Jan 90

Disco/Nu-Disco
Ray Mang - "Osea Island"
Tigerbalm - "Cosmic Union" (feat Joy Tyson)
Ruf Dug - "Vape Quarter Rhythm"
Tuccillo - "Siroco"
Review: ***B-STOCK: Sleeve damaged & record has light surface marks/scratches, otherwise in excellent working condition***

20/20 Vision and Crazy P continue their long and fruitful relationship with a fourth volume of carefully curated and super-fresh new cuts as part of this fine ongoing series. Scandi-disco don Ray Man opens up with typically lush cosmic melodies and loose-limed nu-disco beats with more than a hint of funk. Tigerbalm then heads into a tropical oasis with 'Cosmic Union' (feat Joy Tyson) which has Afro rhythms and steamy vocals bringing the heat. Ruf Dug shows his multi-genre chops again with 'Vape Quarter Rhythm' which is part proto-house cut and part dreamy Italo bliss out with rave whistles and hands-in-the-air chords. Ibiza's Tuccillo closes out with one of his signature Balearic gems in 'Siroco', which is as breezy and carefree as cocktails by the sea at sundown.

Fullstandiga Rattigheter - "1988" (5:41)
Ruf Dug - "Cassette Boogie" (2:52)
Fachrur Riaz Hazbullah - "Muriam" (6:01)
Praah - "Luxor Equinox" (3:55)
Ruutu Poiss - "Heinas" (4:39)
Compassion Crew - "II Y A" (5:06)
Review: Peculiarly, Fasaan offshoot Chalice has lain dormant since the label's first release appeared in stores back in 2014. Happily its Swedish parent label has decided to pull out all the stops for this comeback 12", gathering together six tracks from artists based across Europe and beyond. At six tracks deep there's not enough space to go into detail about every track, but suffice to say they're all loose, warm, quirky and generally lo-fi in feel. Highlights include the dreamy analogue synth-funk of Ruf Dug's "Cassette Boogie", the poignant, emotion-rich synth-wave warmth of Fahcrur Riaz Hazbullah's "Muriam", the clicking beats and intergalactic synth flourishes of "Heina" by Ruutu Pois and the frankly foreboding loose-house creepiness of "II Y A" by Dublin's Compassion Crew.

Glowing Palms - "I Don't Wanna Come Daaaan"
Ruf Dug - "Choppin Tom"
Ruf Dug - "Head Band Dub"
Review: The lesser spotted Ruf Kutz label emerges from hibernation with their third release replete with a trio of multi-faceted discoid thrillers. Mancunian Ruf Dug, resident at the Wet Play parties, contributes two tracks, though it's Red Bull Music Academy alumni Glowing Palms that opens proceedings with the bottom heavy satisfaction of "I Don't Wanna Come Daaaan", which expertly teases out an extended groove before the vocal pay dirt hits! Ruf Dug's first slice of disco action is the taut Philly groove of "Choppin Tom", which neatly plays around with the percussive elements before the glorious strings and killer piano hook comes swooping in. Flipside "Head Band Dub" swerves towards expansive Balearica - just wait for the bubbling acid arpeggio to come to the fore in sync with those dramatic piano flourishes.

Manctalo Beach (4:37)
Manctalo Beach (version) (4:07)
Review: Inspired by the sparkling, Balearic-tinged Italo-disco sounds of fellow Mancunians Red Laser, Ruf Dug decided to rustle up his own synth-heavy, sun-kissed workout. The result is 'Manctalo Beach', an arpeggio-driven slab of summery brilliance marked out by pulsating bass, cheery lead lines, wavy chords and glistening melodic flourishes. Throw in some delay-laden percussion breakdowns and you have a pleasingly authentic chunk of kaleidoscopic retro-futurism. Turn to the flip for Ruf Dug's own 'Version' rework, a proto-house style dub full of effects-laden drum machine hits, synthesized cowbell, stripped-back grooves and mind-mangling breakdowns.

Dominica (Kenneth Bager sunset ambient mix) (5:25)
Review: Not being satisfied with his debut for Music For Dreams - coming through on the label with the wonderful Island LP - man like Ruf Duggles is back on the Danish imprint with some brutally sublime remixes of the tunes featured on it. The always excellent Peaking Lights reshapes "Speedboat" into a dubby, chilled-out kinda jam, while AL Breadwinner proceeds to deconstruct "Rasta Beach" and turns it into a minimal dub groover fort the after hours. On the flip, 2814 mystifies "Tendacayou" into a wave, air-filled lick in a new age kind of vibe, whereas Kenneth Bager goes all balearic on us for "Dominica". Lovely.

Review: **RUFFY REPRESS** RBMA alumni Ruf Dug ups the ante with his debut album. According to legend it was written during 12 weeks of island paradise in Guadeloupe. But as his previous work (all written in Manchester) is as beautifully Balearic as this, who can tell? Stretching his signature and a great sense of space throughout, he flexes from pretty raw, head-bendy dancefloor (the 2020 Soundsystem style build on "Speedboat" and the sprightly tech lollops of "Mosquito") to the film-like and vaguely discordant ("Mangrove Dub") via the totally immersive and alluring (the stunning, spine-melting overlapping arpeggios of "Shoreline"). Regardless of where he wrote it, it's a highly accomplished album... And perfectly timed for the sunny season.

Review: Norwich may be a fine city (as its' road signs proclaim), but it does seem an unlikely place to find a party - and now offshoot label - dedicated to skewed analogue disco, spacey house, and pictures of cats on synthesizers. Welcome to the world of Cosmic Pint Glass, who unveil their imprint with an excellent EP from rising star Ruf Dug. The brilliantly titled "Guy Threepwood Takes DMT & Goes Paragliding At Sunset" is particularly good, layering cheap-and-cheerful synth melodies over a loose-but-chunky drum machine groove. "Joanna" sounds like a fusion of cheeky Balearica and kosmiche after a few too many sherberts, while the Dangerous Dub of the same track is a moody, late night treat.

Ruffy's Day Out
Late Cruise
Review: Predominantly known for his excellent selecting skills and edit work with the Ruf Kutz label, spiky Mancunian Ruf Dug has latterly started to impress with his original work behind the buttons. Last year's Head Cleaner set for Sud Electronic was a breakthrough release for Ruffy, and a subsequent drop for Porn Wax was just as good, featuring two lustful glances at heady '80s new age. Lectric Sands offshoot It's A Lectric World is Ruffy's latest port of call and features a trio of 3 rough hewn hardware jams recorded straight to tape. Future Times and Mood Hut fans will be all over the tinny cosmic title track and accompanying dub from Zoovox, whilst the closing "Late Cruise" winds the tempo right down for some psychedelic bruk boogie Manchester-style.

MV Look
Review: The artist occasionally known as Simon Rufdug Mcruff Al-Duggleston steps up to the collectable Porn Wax series with two lustful, lingering looks at 80s electronica. "Sorta Rican" is all soft skanks and twinkling keys. Think Ace Of Bass but with added Balearica. "MV Look", meanwhile, is a psychedelic storm where bold blasts of synths overlap like crashing waves on a new beat shore. Mesmerising and masterful, Ruf Dug is one smooth operator.

Review: Dormant for some five years, the Sud Electronic label continues it's resurgence after returning last year welcoming the sounds of Manchester's Ruf Dug into the fold with The Headcleaner EP. One of the city's finest selectors, Ruf Dug has quietly been fine tuning his production technique through the Ruf Kutz label he's overseen (as well as dropping some great straight to tape mixes via his must check blog) Having contributed to a Use of Weapons release late last year, the Mancunian clearly has his sights set on expanding his production discography and a full debut for a respected hub like Sud is quite a statement. Musically, the four tracks here tread (or chug down) the same path that you'd expect to hear atManchester institution Wet Play one night, taking in hazy boogie and warm house.

You Are The One (Mugwump & DC Salas remix) (9:58)
You Are The One (Voxapella) (2:51)
Review: The Tusk Wax crew welcome Ruf Dug and Marcel Vogel to the fold for a right royal hoedown of seedy late night house music machinations. "You Are The One" rides on a bloated bassline and ethereal pads while a guttural vocal chants out the title, making all your sleazy dancefloor dreams come true. "Young Narcos" is a much lighter affair, lacing smooth 80s island boogie into a contemporary setting for an exercise in loose limbed liquid funk. Mugwump & DC Salas come correct on the remix tip, beefing "You Are The One" up into a snarling, acidic romper, and there's also a "Voxapella" of the track slipped on the end of the record for creative mixing delights.

Ruf Dug - "Cosmic Feelings"
Mr Mendel - "Freakin'"
Philou Louzolo - "Woman 2 Woman" (Tribute to Kathleen Cleaver)
Martin Hayes - "Broken Memory"
Review: If you're going to launch a label, it helps to make your first release a bit of a killer. That's certainly the case with this varied collection of floor-friendly burners that constitutes the debut of Bristol-based outfit Banoffee Pies. There's a range of edits and original material, with Amsterdam's Mr Mendel arguably stealing the show with "Freakin" - a tough chunk of booty-shakin' P-funk. That said, Ruf Dug's "Cosmic Feelings" - a heady trip into sweaty, analogue Detroit house territory with darting synths and bubbling electronics aplenty - is also incredibly impressive. Elsewhere, Martin Hayes goes deep, slow and sensual on the lovingly crafted "Broken Memory", while Philou Louzolo drops a sinewy chunk of laidback disco-house in the shape of trumpet-boasting chugger "Woman 2 Woman".
