  1. Ebo Taylor & Uhuru Yenzu - "What Is Life ?"
  2. Pat Thomas - "Gyae Su" (Mpaebo LP version)
Review: Mukatsuku presents the second volume of killer Ghanaian highlife/afrofunk monsters this time focusing on two artists legendary in the genre. First up first time on a 45 from 1980 is '' What Is Life '' from the Ebo Taylor & Uhuru Yenzu album ''Conflict Nkru! ''. Amazing brass, flute and afrocentric rhythms lay the path for the track once heard never forgotten. On the flip first time ever on a 45 Pat Thomas who features on volume 1 of the series comes correct with possibly the best version (and there are a few ) of ''Gyae Su'' . With its jangly african guitar licks and infectious chorus lines the feel good factor is set to maximum. Another dope afro burner on Mukatsuku and sure to sell out fast. 500 hand numbered copies and no repress

  1. I Can Say (4:49)
  2. Let's Think It Over (3:55)
Review: Two raw afro dance floor bombs from Pat Thomas & Marijjata both taken from the Coming Home: Original Ghanaian Highlife & Afrobeat Classics 1964-1981 issued on Strur Records in 2016 and now presented on one killer hand-numbered 45 on the singles only imprint Mukatsuku .The a side ''I Can Say'' is issued for the very first time on a 45 & is a raucous trip into highlife-funk fusion territory where Thomas' urgent lead vocals and rousing horns rise above a suitably heavyweight groove .On the flip from 76 the powerful brass section of ''Lets Think It Over '' kicks off kicks off the tune with great impact before what essentially is simply an afro soul masterpiece.Pat Thomas shows us once again what a great song writer he is not only with his lyrics but also the dynamic arrangements of the funky groove.Hand -numbered to just 500 units. Once it's gone then its gone !

Review: Comet's "Disco Highlife" re-edit series continues with an EP that draws together original tracks and reworks from two of the Highlife scene's biggest stars: Ebo Taylor and Pat Thomas. The latter can be found on side A, with the tipsy, synth-driven highlife-boogie fusion of "Enye Woa". This is in turn re-edited by LeonxLeon, who has not only extended the original track but also added some superb new spacey synth solos. Turn to the flip for Ebo Taylor's richly percussive, Hammond-laden disco-highlife bubbler "Atwer Abroba" and Leo Nanjo's brilliant remix, which re-imagines the track as a rubbery chunk of Highlife-house drenched in dub delays.

Review: Comet's ongoing "Highlife Re-Edit" series is perfect for those who want a little contemporary pizzazz alongside their Afro-disco grooves and dancefloor-ready highlife classics. Like its predecessor, the series' latest volume boasts cuts from highlife legends Ebo Taylor and Pat Thomas. The former's punchy, breezy and trumpet-laden highlife-jazz cut "Peace On Earth" can be found on side A, alongside a dreamy Monsieur Scott version that drags the track further towards leisurely jazz-house territory. The Pat Thomas track showcased on side B is "We Are Coming Home", a righteous highlife/funk fusion effort rich in dense percussion and eyes-closed rock guitar solos. The accompanying 2 Paris Septembre Re-Edit brilliantly re-invents it as a bustling broken beat affair laden in shimmering synths and squelchy electronic bass.

Review: Last year, Strut released a surprise new album from Ghanaian highlife legend Pat Thomas. Here, they look to the legendary vocalist and musician's vast back catalogue, showcasing music he produced or featured on between 1964 - when he was a member of the Broadway Dance Band - and 1981. It's pretty much a whirlwind trip through Ghanaian dance music history, with Thomas as the central attraction. As well as killer solo material - see the glistening guitars, bold bass and fluid drums of the juju-influenced "Awurade Mpaebo", the Moog-laden Afrobeat strut of "Yamona", and the slow burning soul of "Can't You See" - and tracks laid down with his various backing bands, the collection also features two previously unreleased collaborations with guitarist Ebo Taylor.

Review: Pianist Pat Thomas has been an integral part of the British jazz scene for the best part of 25 years. In that time, he's performed with and alongside countless scene stalwarts, rising stars and experimental fusionists. The Elephant Clock of Al Jazari is his first solo album since 2013's Al-Khwarizmi Variations, and takes a similarly improvised approach. Yet while Thomas's previous free-jazz piano improvisations have tended to result in relatively short pieces, the four tracks here are notably lengthier. This merely offers Thomas an opportunity to showcase the full depth of his impressive piano-playing skills, while delivering jaunty, all-action pieces that refuse to settle on one riff, motif or rhythmic sequence. The results are hugely entertaining and surprisingly evocative, despite the album's formidable free-jazz approach.

Review: He may now be 72, but legendary highlife vocalist Pat Thomas still has the desire to make new music. In fact his previous set, 2015's "Pat Thomas & The Kwashibuu Area Band" - a collaboration with producer Ben Abarbanel-Wolff, storied Ghanian highlife bandleader Kwame Yeboah and musicians including fellow West African heavyweights Tony Allen and Ebo Taylor - is arguably one of the strongest albums of his lengthy career. This belayed follow-up is equally as inspired, with the golden-voiced Ghanaian vocalist providing the attention-grabbing focal point throughout. Yet while Thomas's vocals are as sublime as ever, it's the quality and detail of the accompanying music - a mix of laid back and dancefloor-ready highlife in the style he made famous in the 1970s - that really stands out.

Review: Few Ghanaian musicians are quite as celebrated as Pat Thomas, who recorded and released his first album way back in 1974. Understandably, his releases have become less frequent with the passing of time, and Pat Thomas & The Kwashibu Area Band is his first studio album since 1991. The supporting cast list is, unsurprisingly, impressive, and includes Fela Kuti collaborator Tony Allen, and legendary highlife guitarist Ebo Taylor. Musically, there are few surprises, just a killer collection of bright, breezy, sweet and addictive highlife and Afrobeat jams, all blessed with Thomas' wonderful voice, Taylor's glistening guitars, and some seriously punchy horns. It's a real treat for fans of African music.
