Lovers Jak
Review: House legend presents Chicago head Noleian Reusse with a fascinating excursion in to deep house territory. A sublime, atmospheric track with a gentle melody backed with clicks, beeps & whirrs with techy feel.

Steve Poindexter - "Maniac" (original 1988 extended Acid Replay version)
Steve Poindexter - "Maniac" (Area's Lost Meaning version)
Dimitri Pike - "Feen For Rhythm" (Belgium Acid Beat mix)
Noleian Reusse - "Short Circuit" (C64 Bypass mix)
Review: More quality acid house and techno from the Mathematics label. The A is an extended version of "Maniac", originally done in 1988 and released on the infamous Trax label. Flip it over for new remixes by Chicago producers Area and Noleian Reusse, plus Belgium's Dimitri Pike.

Gun Romance (5:34)
Review: Gunnar Wendel's Ominira label swing back into the line of sight for their first release of the year and it finds the excellent Noleian Reusse at the helm. Known for his ongoing Africans With Mainframes project alongside Jamal Moss, Reusse does possess a small but deadly solo discography for Mathematics, Love What You Feel and his own Black Tekno label. Given that this Ominira 12" is also called Black Tekno, it's evidently a concept that is close to Reusse. Across the three tracks, the US producer really shows his range, with "Venus In Scorpio" a quite dreamy opener that pairs up lazy acid lines with loose limbered drums and yearning chords. Following this, "3rd Layer" veers off into fidgeting and unpredictable 303 madness whilst "Gun Romance" strips back proceedings for a more abstract finale.

Review: Noleian Reusse steps away from the Africans With Mainframes project he shares with Jamal Moss to drop a five track selection of ruffness on the Love What You Feel imprint. With credits for Creme and Mathematics to his name, you should get an idea of what to expect with the Black Tekno EP - veering away from the all too prevalent safeness of current deep house in favour of jagged rawness! Completely untitled, proceedings get off to a fine start with the loose jacking rhythms of the opening track and there's an ever present sense of unease that occupies the lower regions. The midway point even deviates into lullaby filled dubstep rhythms - thankfully shorn of aggressive basslines and instead filled with a creeped out synth melody. Disjointed analogue techno abstractions and alien machine funk are perhaps the best way to describe the flipside excursions. If you like your house to deviate from the template then this release is worthy of further investigation.
