Raw Joints #6.1 (180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: SLPFNK 020. Rel: 07 May 19
Minimal/Tech House
  1. Ferro - "Electric Sunshine" (8:03)
  2. William Caycedo - "Mi Casa" (5:39)
  3. Malin Genie - "Superposition" (7:19)
  4. Ingi Visions - "RJG" (5:05)
Review: The Raw Joints series is one of the best things about the ever-excellent SlapFunk Records, and now the Dutch label is back with a fresh bout of sounds from some of the most inventive artists operating in the minimal house sphere. Ferro's "Electric Sunshine" leads the charge with a militant groove and a rubbery bassline to die for. William Caycedo has a rugged, sample slicing thrust at work on "Mi Casa", while Malin Genie takes things far out on the wonderfully freaky "Superposition". The record wraps up with Ingi Visions, whose "RJG" wriggles into a skippy 2-step groove that will have bodies shaking uncontrollably when it gets deployed in the dance.

  1. Fulbert - "Untitled"
  2. Kastil - "Red Clown" (raw mix)
  3. Malin Genie - "Leavin"
  4. Jefferson Belmondo - "Booty Groove"
Review: Seeking to sum up the sound of his burgeoning label, Mario Castillo pulls in a selection of artists to assist him in his Kastil guise. Soul Notes is a label clearly in love with a more vibe-laden kind of deep house, whether it comes in the form of a bumping garage shuffle as in Fulbert's "Untitled", or Kastil's own more aquatic excursion. The unifying atmosphere is a blue note one, coming out of dreamy chords steeped in the legacy of black music that permeate each of the tracks on offer. Look no further than the feel-good roll of Jefferson Belmondo's "Booty Groove" for an exercise in understated funk that knows how to pay its dues.

Muck EP (180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: MGM 06. Rel: 21 Oct 19
Minimal/Tech House
  1. Alpha Decay
  2. Tachyon
  3. Muck
  4. Stocha
Review: The sixth installment on Malin Genie's self-titled label welcomes Will & Ink resident Yaleesa Hall into the fold. Regular collaborators Malin and Yaleesa have turned out plenty of joint 12"s in the past on Will & Ink and this very label, and they sound more comfortable and sonically aligned than ever on this mighty record. There's no messing with "Alpha Decay," a loose and lysergic dubby techno workout. "Tachyon" orbits a similar soundworld, but shears the fat away for a minimal palette that sounds powerful echoing around the ample space in the mix. "Muck" slips into freaky after hours house territory, and "Stocha" drops a massive Basic Channel dub techno chord around a whisper of a beat to devastating effect.

  2. Malin Genie - "Hemlock"

  5. Teflon Dons - "Damn Mosquitos!"
  6. Tristan Da Cunha - "Hit Up On This!"
  7. Ebony Cuts - "Disco Credit"
Review: Here's something to get excited about: a first missive from the My Love Is Underground camp for three long years. In an attempt to make up for lost time, boss Jeremy Underground has gathered together seven fresh tracks, and stretched them across two weighty slabs of wax. As usual, the featured deep house cuts tend towards the classic and U.S-inspired, variously doffing a cap to New Jersey, New York and Chicago, via ear-pleasing organ riffs (see DJ Steaw's excellent "East Orange"), soulful vocal snippets (Teflon Dons), clear boompty influences (Tristan Da Cunha's Salt 'n' Pepa-sampling "Hit Up On This"), and breezy disco (Ebony Cuts). Franck Roger's contribution, "For Me", is also one of his sleaziest, basement-friendly tracks to date.

  1. Pressure Baby (Mar vocal)
  2. Oh! Snap
  3. My Love For Who?
  4. Naive
  5. Damn Near Made It
Review: Originally released in 2012 on a single 12", Lazare Hoche and Malin Genie's I Don't Sync So Part 1 finds itself the subject of a very deserving reissue, this time spreading the five tracks across two slabs of vinyl instead of the original one disc. If you missed out first time around there's no excuse not to partake, especially with the crucial vocal house of "Pressure Baby", '80s-influenced hip house rhythms of "Oh! Snap", New Jersey garage style "My Love For You" and deep, dark and driving organ house of "Naive" all sounding as fresh and relevant as they did two years ago.

Starting with a Detroit Synth infectious loop, DEEP AGAIN, that has the perfect advanced structure to burn any dancelfoor, on the flip side, NMS, you will be hammered by the chirurgical balance between raw and atmospheric inside travel.

  2. Kedblokken
  3. Effective Relief
Review: Operating in a murk of minimal uneasiness, Dutch producer Malin Genie inaugurates the Dialegestai imprint with a three-tracker of reduced grooves loaded with atmosphere expressed through captivating yet subtle means. "Peace" may tick away dutifully in the foreground, but it's the enveloping background textures that make this a seductive proposition for the deepest explorers. "Kedblokken" meanwhile falls into a more breakbeat-informed structure that pirouettes around the gentle humming of the dub-shaped tones, leaving it to "Effective Relief" to get ever so slightly peppier with its crisp snare providing a more tangible rhythmic off-beat to latch on to.

Sense Of Swing EP (180 gram vinyl 12")

Deep House
  1. Sense Of Swing (7:47)
  2. Propter (7:13)
  3. Redskap (8:51)
  4. Ulux (7:07)
Review: REPRESS ALERT: Following a recent outing under the Mandar alias alongside studio pals Samuel Andre Masden and Charlie Naffah, Nick Putman presents his first solo single under the Malin Genie guise for two years. Predictably, he explores a range of deep house styles over the course of a four-track EP that's both quietly confident and largely impressive. There's a real bump to "Sense of Swing", despite the presnce of warm, fluid keys, while "Propter" successfully joins the dots between loopy tech-house and shimmering deepness. The techno influence is more obvious on the flip, where "Redskap" and "Ulux" both derive potency from the hypnotic nature of Putman's immaculately produced groove.

  4. Noc
Review: While there's no shortage of quality garage house being crafted at the moment, Malin Genie has the style particularly locked down on this healthy EP for Tomorrow Is Now Kid! It's not easy to bring convincing wares to a label that was doing it back in the late 80s, but the likes of "Pushin' On" just can't be faulted, not least in the spacious funk of the main beat decorated with choice vocal licks, organ stabs and fluttering sax notes. "Klets" is a more hurrying affair, with a sassy, jazzy organ catching up to the pacing beat, but watch out for B2 cut "Noc" with its forceful jack and oddball sci-fi melodies.

Mer Neith It Es (180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: MGM 02. Rel: 23 Jul 18
Minimal/Tech House
  1. Hypothetical Island Of Stability
  2. Fudeoroshi
  3. Bulbocavernosa
  4. Mer Neith It Es
Review: Not content with already steering the Vigenere and Oscillat labels and appearing regularly on Will & Ink and Lazare Hoche, Malin Genie has launched his own self-titled label as a vessel for his most intriguing twists on the house and techno template. The record strides in with the tracky tones of "Hypothetical Island Of Stability," a feast of micro pops and squiggles strapped to a rock solid beat. "Fudeoroshi" is more overtly minimalist in nature, using the barest of ingredients to make a potent dancefloor cut. "Bulbocavernosa" opens up the filters and lets a little nasty acid fun and games into the mix, and then "Mer Neith It Es" rounds the record off with a soaring slice of melodic, deep techno that stands confidently apart from the rest of the tracks.

Altrica Bloom EP (180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: MGM 01. Rel: 05 Feb 18
Minimal/Tech House
  1. Snake Scale (8:38)
  2. Bloom (6:51)
  3. Altrica (8:21)
Review: Malin Genie's warm, funk fuelled sound returns to blow some balmy vibes into your frostbitten souls, and he's sounding especially expressive on this effervescent new 12". "Snake Scale" features all kinds of liquid funk notes pouring around the crisp house beat, channeling soulful tones without resorting to basic sampling. "Bloom" is a more linear cut with a steady tech house pulse, but it's shot through with mysterious ambience that deepens the emotional impact of the track. "Altrica" completes the EP with a smoked out trip into reduced, back room house subtleties for the blissed out crew to get psychedelic to.

Review: Having built up his self titled label alongside his sterling work as part of Oscillat, Lazare Hoche and Will & Ink, the one and only Malin Genie delivers his debut solo album. Moving beyond the pure club focus of his singles and EPs, the Genie has seized this opportunity to present a widescreen panorama of his sound, leading in with the subliminal ambience of "You" as a springboard to explore breaks, electro, techno, and especially IDM. There are so many ideas swirling round Anthropomorphic Sympathy, it's hard to know where to begin describing it. A true headphone commute for the deep listener to burrow into.

Review: Malin Genie takes us deeper than deep on this new drop for his self-titled label. "Aventijn" opens proceedings up with a veritable plunge pool of submerged pads and steady ticking techno hypnotism - the perfect mind bath for all sub-aquatic travellers. "KIAB" has a dusty house groove to it, but it's still resolutely liquid in its demanour, while "Duppy" has a more pronounced edge and some intriguing metallic dub clangs at work in the mix. "Amulius Numitor" continues the dub techno theme without using any drums - just one massive gravelly chord pulse. Then the record trips on out for as long as you like with a batch of locked grooves for the trick-loving DJs to get creative with.

Review: Malin Genie is back with the second instalment in his immersive 12" project, Vixere. This edition kicks off with an instantly tougher demeanour compared to the supremely chilled first one, as witnessed by the straight-up tech thump of "Troglodyte Party". "Drek" teases things back down to a heady murmur with some squashed and subliminal minimal house for the back room crowd, while "Mastodon" brings back some of those vibrant industrial textures that stood out on "Duppy" from Vixere I/II. "The Foolish & The Senseless Alike" is a more chirpy, synth rich groover and "Bodie" closes this quality project out with a richly rendered ambient sound bath.

Review: REPRESS ALERT: Vigenere is creating a mysterious vibe with its obscure collaborative releases, but the music speaks for itself as it plots a course through deeper realms of the dance. After contributing to the first release, Malin Genie is back and seemingly flying solo for a more direct trip into dubby techno territory - that's certainly the vibe on opening immersion heater "Eschaton". "Drain" has a more tripped out minimal flavour with the after hours in mind, while "Venus" swaps moody atmospheres out for a hazy shuffler peppered with slices of warm instrumentation. "Elara" brings things full circle with another crooked dub-out to bring eyelids down heavy in a state of transcendental bliss.

Review: Malin Genie's self-titled label carries another wedge of sublime deep house directly aiming at the after party crowd, this time in collaboration with the prolific Swedish producer Per Hammar, "Lijnbaan Dubb" kicks things off in an immersive swirl of heavy-lidded house for the mellow steppers to lock into. "Fosie" is a twitchier concern that reduces the groove down to a crystalline minimal framework peppered with quirky sound design. "Scania" has a more techy disposition, getting locked into some seriously heady loops and splashed with generous helpings of dub processing. SAM then reshapes the track into a moody strutter that brings things full circle with the A1 gem that opens this seriously classy EP.
