Ferro - "Electric Sunshine" (8:03)
William Caycedo - "Mi Casa" (5:39)
Malin Genie - "Superposition" (7:19)
Ingi Visions - "RJG" (5:05)
Review: The Raw Joints series is one of the best things about the ever-excellent SlapFunk Records, and now the Dutch label is back with a fresh bout of sounds from some of the most inventive artists operating in the minimal house sphere. Ferro's "Electric Sunshine" leads the charge with a militant groove and a rubbery bassline to die for. William Caycedo has a rugged, sample slicing thrust at work on "Mi Casa", while Malin Genie takes things far out on the wonderfully freaky "Superposition". The record wraps up with Ingi Visions, whose "RJG" wriggles into a skippy 2-step groove that will have bodies shaking uncontrollably when it gets deployed in the dance.

Alpha Decay

Stocha
Review: The sixth installment on Malin Genie's self-titled label welcomes Will & Ink resident Yaleesa Hall into the fold. Regular collaborators Malin and Yaleesa have turned out plenty of joint 12"s in the past on Will & Ink and this very label, and they sound more comfortable and sonically aligned than ever on this mighty record. There's no messing with "Alpha Decay," a loose and lysergic dubby techno workout. "Tachyon" orbits a similar soundworld, but shears the fat away for a minimal palette that sounds powerful echoing around the ample space in the mix. "Muck" slips into freaky after hours house territory, and "Stocha" drops a massive Basic Channel dub techno chord around a whisper of a beat to devastating effect.

Airways (8:13)
Golv (7:23)
Snel Dubb (7:51)
Review: This coming together of Per Hammar and Male Genie brings two talents at the top of their game in different sound words. The former tends to deal in dubby techno, the second expertly deep house. They find plenty of great middle ground here on three fresh cuts for the nascent De Vloer label. 'Airways' has hefty drums and frosted dub chords rippling over the top to make for a serious groove. 'Golv' is another elastic and dynamic house cut with real weight and late night shadow to it while 'Snel Dubb' is a little more funky and airy. Overall, a great collaboration.

Deep Again
Deep Again (180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: AR 01. Rel: 30 Nov 20

Deep House
Deep Again (8:10)
NMS (6:20)
Review: Lazare Hoche and Malin Genie join forces for a sublime trip through psychoactive tech house that edges away from minimal and into a more colourful, analogue headspace. 'Deep Again' revels in swooping pad swells and rounded lead hooks, of course strapped to one of those impeccably executed four-to-the-floor beats. 'NMS' jacks things up with a punchy synth line and snappy claps that are perfectly honed for the peak time, but there's still a luxuriant melancholy lingering behind the rhythm section thanks to more spacious atmospherics. This is as classy as tech house gets, but what else did you expect from two operators in their absolute prime?

Phaethon (6:23)
Gamma Gazette (6:18)
Wooble (5:45)
Going To The Beach All Day (7:05)
Review: Dreamy and to-the-point deep house cuts from Malin Genie. The shifty, twisty A-siders 'Phaethon' and 'Gamma Gazette' draw on all manner of stylistic influences, from chiming bells, deep BoC-esque pads, and speed-garagey lo-fi-isms. The B-side gets wackier with it, working in calculator bloops, acid buzz-outs and whispery whoops for an overall cheekier affair than the A.

Acheron (8:48)
Tumladen (5:49)
Halcyon (6:56)
Review: Amsterdam-based artist and record label owner Malin Genie returns to his post-lockdown era label Empam for a second time after the incredible 'Midnight Zero' 12" last year. Genie has never been one to be tunnel visioned on just one style of techno, and much like 'Midnight Zero', 'Acheron' embraces deep, acid, ambient and hardcore flourishes through the project. Opening track 'Acheron' has an ambient aura that glides over its smooth drumline, while 'Tumladen' is wielding the power of acid techno with its throbbing metallic rhythms. The last track, 'Halcyon', is a personal favourite with its atmospheric reverb and trad-style groove.

Review: Malin Genie's purple patch continues to yield more delights with this latest drop on his self-titled label. This time around the prolific Dutch artist is delving into smoky, hidden corners of house music where dub lingers thick in the air and rough textures scuff depth and character into the synth work. "Aventijn" has a purposeful drum machine tick but its utterly somnambulant in its execution, while "KIAR" lilts on a dusty groove and woozy clouds of funk. "Duppy" has a distinct dub techno influence, but it's still a steadfast house groover at heart, and "Amulius Numitor" ditches the beats for a pure interstellar exploration. With some bonus locked grooves for creative DJs, this is a versatile and imaginatively rendered EP with creative spark to match its usefulness in the mix.

Drain
Venus
Elara
Review: REPRESS ALERT: Vigenere is creating a mysterious vibe with its obscure collaborative releases, but the music speaks for itself as it plots a course through deeper realms of the dance. After contributing to the first release, Malin Genie is back and seemingly flying solo for a more direct trip into dubby techno territory - that's certainly the vibe on opening immersion heater "Eschaton". "Drain" has a more tripped out minimal flavour with the after hours in mind, while "Venus" swaps moody atmospheres out for a hazy shuffler peppered with slices of warm instrumentation. "Elara" brings things full circle with another crooked dub-out to bring eyelids down heavy in a state of transcendental bliss.

Review: Having built up his self titled label alongside his sterling work as part of Oscillat, Lazare Hoche and Will & Ink, the one and only Malin Genie delivers his debut solo album. Moving beyond the pure club focus of his singles and EPs, the Genie has seized this opportunity to present a widescreen panorama of his sound, leading in with the subliminal ambience of "You" as a springboard to explore breaks, electro, techno, and especially IDM. There are so many ideas swirling round Anthropomorphic Sympathy, it's hard to know where to begin describing it. A true headphone commute for the deep listener to burrow into.

Hypothetical Island Of Stability
Fudeoroshi
Bulbocavernosa
Mer Neith It Es
Review: Not content with already steering the Vigenere and Oscillat labels and appearing regularly on Will & Ink and Lazare Hoche, Malin Genie has launched his own self-titled label as a vessel for his most intriguing twists on the house and techno template. The record strides in with the tracky tones of "Hypothetical Island Of Stability," a feast of micro pops and squiggles strapped to a rock solid beat. "Fudeoroshi" is more overtly minimalist in nature, using the barest of ingredients to make a potent dancefloor cut. "Bulbocavernosa" opens up the filters and lets a little nasty acid fun and games into the mix, and then "Mer Neith It Es" rounds the record off with a soaring slice of melodic, deep techno that stands confidently apart from the rest of the tracks.

Snake Scale (8:38)
Bloom (6:51)
Altrica (8:21)
Review: Malin Genie's warm, funk fuelled sound returns to blow some balmy vibes into your frostbitten souls, and he's sounding especially expressive on this effervescent new 12". "Snake Scale" features all kinds of liquid funk notes pouring around the crisp house beat, channeling soulful tones without resorting to basic sampling. "Bloom" is a more linear cut with a steady tech house pulse, but it's shot through with mysterious ambience that deepens the emotional impact of the track. "Altrica" completes the EP with a smoked out trip into reduced, back room house subtleties for the blissed out crew to get psychedelic to.

Sense Of Swing (7:47)
Propter (7:13)
Redskap (8:51)
Ulux (7:07)
Review: REPRESS ALERT: Following a recent outing under the Mandar alias alongside studio pals Samuel Andre Masden and Charlie Naffah, Nick Putman presents his first solo single under the Malin Genie guise for two years. Predictably, he explores a range of deep house styles over the course of a four-track EP that's both quietly confident and largely impressive. There's a real bump to "Sense of Swing", despite the presnce of warm, fluid keys, while "Propter" successfully joins the dots between loopy tech-house and shimmering deepness. The techno influence is more obvious on the flip, where "Redskap" and "Ulux" both derive potency from the hypnotic nature of Putman's immaculately produced groove.

Effective Relief
Review: Operating in a murk of minimal uneasiness, Dutch producer Malin Genie inaugurates the Dialegestai imprint with a three-tracker of reduced grooves loaded with atmosphere expressed through captivating yet subtle means. "Peace" may tick away dutifully in the foreground, but it's the enveloping background textures that make this a seductive proposition for the deepest explorers. "Kedblokken" meanwhile falls into a more breakbeat-informed structure that pirouettes around the gentle humming of the dub-shaped tones, leaving it to "Effective Relief" to get ever so slightly peppier with its crisp snare providing a more tangible rhythmic off-beat to latch on to.

Scania (SAM Reshape) (7:30)
Review: Malin Genie's self-titled label carries another wedge of sublime deep house directly aiming at the after party crowd, this time in collaboration with the prolific Swedish producer Per Hammar, "Lijnbaan Dubb" kicks things off in an immersive swirl of heavy-lidded house for the mellow steppers to lock into. "Fosie" is a twitchier concern that reduces the groove down to a crystalline minimal framework peppered with quirky sound design. "Scania" has a more techy disposition, getting locked into some seriously heady loops and splashed with generous helpings of dub processing. SAM then reshapes the track into a moody strutter that brings things full circle with the A1 gem that opens this seriously classy EP.
