Stay High Baby (7:55)
Ain't That Love (9:14)
Review: It was a decade ago that Dallas' Eric Estornel, a fairly underground artist known for his electro exploits as Mariel Ito and for his techno as Maetrik, presented the hugely successful Life Index LP under the Maceo Plex alias - setting his career on a rather different course. Later that same year he released the High & Sexy EP on his Ellum Audio label, featuring the classic 'Stay High Baby' which had all the hallmarks of his now idiosyncratic sound: razor sharp basslines, disco motifs and soulful vocals underpinned by minimal house beats. Of equally anthemic proportions was the sultry, late night boogie-down vibe of 'Ain't That Love' over on the flip.

Mutant Pulse (feat Paradigm Shift) (8:39)
Mutant Radio (7:32)
Review: Fresh from reworking Remake's 1992 progressive house cover of Vangelis' "Blade Runner" theme, Maceo Plex returns to the Ellum Audio imprint he co-founded with Alta in 2011. This time round, he's got company, too, with veteran Texas outfit Paradigm Shift (whose "Requisition" was featured on Plex's recent Fabric mix CD) lending a hand on title track "Mutant Pulse". It's a typically atmospheric, peak-time-friendly affair, with trippy female spoken world vocals weaving in and out of an alien techno groove and spine-tingling pads reminiscent of the Moby classic "Go". On the flipside, "Mutant Radio" is an altogether darker and more hypnotic interpretation, with spaced-out stabs and ghostly chords accompanying Plex's fuzzy, on-point grooves.

Wash Away My Tears (12" mix) (6:51)
Solar Detroit (12" mix) (8:44)
Review: Eric Estornel rose to fame a few years ago, from what seemed like out of nowhere. But unbeknownst to many was churning out sleek electro for a long time before as Mariel Ito. But it was with Maceo Plex that he really found his groove with anthems such as "Your Style" and Sleazy Rider". Fast forward to 2015 he's still at the top of his game as a DJ (check the polls) and as a producer as heard striking out on his own imprint Ellum Audio. It sees him temporarily return to his old ways with a chill electro number that ticks all the boxes; vocoder, soaring analogue strings and warm chunky arpeggiated bassline. If that wasn't enough, he flips the script on us again in the form of right techno banger "Solar Detroit" sounding like something on Oscar Mulero's Pole Group. Nice one!

Conjure Dreams
Conjure Floyd
Review: Ever the champion of brains and brawn in equal measure, Maceo Plex makes his debut appearance on Drumcode with this punchy beast of a single. "Conjure Dreams" features plenty of Plex signifiers, from the rounded and rowdy bassline pump to the haunting tone of the synth lines, neatly packaged in a chunky framework of big room drums. "Conjure Floyd" meanwhile burrows into more minimal territory where the tones are amelodic and the percussion takes the lead, calling to mind the restraint and tension of classic M_nus productions where so much could be said with so little.

Conjure Superstar
Review: When the hitters are as big as Maceo Plex and Kompakt, there's no need for trite B side distractions and so this single-sided release comes forth with exactly the kind of anthemic, pop-straddling tech house that you would expect from such a combination. There may be edgy arpeggios and chunky drums powering the rhythm of the track, but with the straining emotional vocal and romantic pad sweeps, this is a track to garner appeal across the board, and not at the expense of the impact this will have in a club. It won't take long to learn the words, so before the summer is out you can expect plenty of people to be cooing along dreamily to this bright and bold belter.

Conjure Bass
Review: It's been a while since Barcelona's most famous adopted Texan son Maceo Plex graced us with some solo material on his own Ellum Audio, instead electing to perform a fine curatorial role overseeing releases from Good Guy Mikesh, Jay Dee, Danny Daze and TV Baby. Plex fanatics will be pleased as punch to see the Conjure One 12" with the producer adopting a slightly conceptual tone across the three productions. Notions of Bass, Drama and Balearia are broached on the triplet of Plex productions, with "Conjure Balearia" leaning on a naggingly familiar sample. Of course the moment the funk snaps into groove on the track is a perfect example of why Maceo is so popular!

Filthy Mama
Stimulation
Review: Maceo's label Ellum Audio is really beginning to find its place in the tech scene; lavishing listeners with a salubrious, rolling funk, it's been just as much of a breath of fresh air as Maceo's productions themselves. Put the two together and you're onto a purebred winner... "Filthy Mama" twists and turns with the sonic toxicity of 2020 Soundsystem record performed live while "Stimulation" is more prog-inclined with heaps of beautiful emotion laced throughout.

Love Somebody Else (Maceo Plex bonus tool)
Review: We don't often see one-sided vinyl any more, probably because the track is required to be pretty damn good - but nothing to worry about here, Mr.Maceo Plex has taken care of that! This is the Maceo Plex "bonus tool", an acid-filtered house stomper capable of some serious dance floor damage thanks to its thumping kick drum, sexy vocals and growling parades of bass.

Frisky
Sex Appeal
Review: ** Rebels Repress for the Plex Fans ** Just in time to join in another Miami attack by the Rebels crew, Maceo Plex delivers two prime cuts, showcasing his undeniable gift for seductive grooves. Aptly named 'Frisky', Maceo is clearly gearing up for the party/mating season with this next installment on Crosstown Rebels. Title track 'Frisky' has all the flair of a Maceo floor burner, destined to warm bodies as the night draws in and set the mood for fun and friskiness. With a sprinkling of classic Maceo dust over the mid-tempo chugging groove, the bassline rumbles below that well renowned funk and there's no doubt Maceo's reign over slinky hypnotic house is set to continue. Continuing in the smokey house vein but lifting the tempo for the later crowd, 'Sex Appeal' is another ode to the fairer members of the species and injects a little romance into the more bumping slice of Maceo gold on offer here. A dose of acid and a breakdown and slow build of shooting synths until the melodic bassline drop is sure to raise the roof (terrace).

Your Style (Maya Jane Coles remix)
Review: Echoey claps sooth us into Crosstown Rebel's latest offering from Maceo Plex. Plex's Life Index album on Crosstown, released in January, garnered praise from industry heavyweights worldwide. An undeniably smokey and sensual vocal from Maceo himself holds no barriers as it breathes out "girl I love your style" in a sexual and repetitive moan. Rattling shakers rise up over the deliriously deep and gruff bass line as "Your Style" prowls itself into a sultry trip. On the flip, the much lauded star of 2010 Maya Jane Coles remixes an equally dark and low slung deep house version, chugging along with a slightly clickier edge that compliments Maceo's original flawlessly.

Vibe Your Love
Vibe Your Love (Zev's Southern Sunrise rework)
Review: ** Crosstown Repress ** Techno veteran Eric Estornel has really hit his house music stride as Maceo Plex, with a sweet little remix for Glimpse earlier this year on Crosstown augmented by Nico Jaar's treatment of Plex track "Gravy Train" which featured on the label's nifty Rebel Rave comp. Team Lazarus offer a tantalisingly good preview of what to expect from Maceo Plex's forthcoming album with "Vibe Your Love". In contrast to recent CTR output the track is resolutely warm, driven by heavily filtered piano melodies that echo beneath the organic groove with heavily processed vocal edits the preface to a vintage house vocal. The flipside remix from Wolf & Lamb's Zev sees chunky house beats augmented by shimmering chords and brassy key flourishes that work as the perfect appetiser to those dreamy vocals that arrive on top of an understated acid ripple to ride the track out.

Destination Mars (7:07)
Destination Mars (Raxon remix) (6:28)
Destination Mars (Shall Ocin remix) (7:05)
Review: While most Drumcode releases are suitably sizable, this EP is particularly large - and not just because it features two huge names in Maceo Plex and Josh Wink. Their original version (A1) is predictably robust and rugged with foreboding low register stabs, metallic clangs, druggy vocal snippets and creepy melodies rising above stomping techno beats. It's a genuinely all-action affair that sounds like a massive room anthem in waiting. Over on side B you'll find two re-rubs: a more melodious Raxon remix that sounds like tech-house on steroids and a deeper, darker, trance-inducing techno take by Shall Ocin.

Solitary Daze (North Lake remix)
Review: There's a reflective quality at work on the latest Ellum Audio release, which finds label boss Maceo Plex teaming up with emo-tech-house stalwart Gabriel Ananda. The resulting "Solitary Daze" is laden with melancholic chords and synth sweeps, featuring a delicate drum section that buffets along the heartbreak harmonies with patience and poise. Barnt gets snapped up for a remix that injects a touch more mystery and dancefloor bite into the proceedings, using a little Eastern mysticism and a punchy bassline to make for a catchy revision that will help confirm the widespread praise the producer has been garnering of late.

Review: Spanish imprint Galaktika emerge from hibernation in style, proffering this various artists EP notable for the presence of Maceo Plex amidst some label regulars. The Crosstown jewel seems to be everywhere at the moment, and his arrival on Galaktika is marked with one of his most heart wrenching productions to date in "Her Security". The standard finely poised drum programming from the Plexman is complemented by some simple but deeply effective chord pluckings and brooding vocal harmonies. Complementing this, Garnica goes deep and sexual on "We Want A Girl", matching Plex in the emotive stakes, whilst "Dimensiones Impossibles" sees Mo Aymard in more playful mood, laying down all manner of hypnotic synth throbbery. Finally Paulo Olarte adds some funk to proceedings with the bumping late night vibes of "Steps".

Going Back (dub version)
Review: How does a label follow up a surprise summer smash? In the case of Ellum Audio and the excellent New York Is Alright from TV Baby, founder Maceo Plex returns with his first original material for the label in nearly a year, teaming up with Odd Parent's Maars on Going Back. A simple two tracker aimed at the dancefloors, the lead original mix takes the vocals of Florence Bird and weaves them deep into the groove of a dark, sonically hypnotic arrangement with all the usual Plex nuances like crisp drums, gloopily foreboding bassline and clipped strings. The dub version naturally discards with Bird's contribution yet retains the intensity
