Review: Despite first surfacing on a split release with former Kowton alias Narcossist on Mindset back in 2008, there has been just a faint murmur of activity from James 'Logos' Parker since then, but now he comes correct with a long player on Keysound that should turn a healthy amount of heads with its ostentatious mixture of found sound, celestial synth work and grimy bass acrobatics. While that might sound like a difficult mixture to fathom, when filtered through the minimalist gauze that Parker has employed as an arrangement device it comes off some truly immersive music. There are nods to video games in some of the samples that crop up, whilst all manner of audacious sounds get repositioned as rhythmic devices, but the primary focus here is on tense atmospheres lingering in a suspended animation between different forms of 21st century music. It's sci-fi music of the highest order, and as such is highly recommended.

Cat: DEV 001. Rel: 20 Feb 17
Dirty Dubstep/Trap/Grime
  1. Glass (Boylan Devils mix) (5:08)
Review: Little intro needed here... Logos and Mumdance launch a dark new Different Circles off-shoot with a blitzed twist of Logos' seminal 2013 depth plunge break-rattler from pioneering grime engineer Boylan. Sparse, cold and more menacing than the original thanks to its longer bass decays, rave mentasms and roomy space between the kicks, it's a pure white knuckle affair. Strictly limited to 400 copies. You know what to do.

Review: Since his last solo album dropped six years ago, James "Logos" Parker has spent much of his studio time collaborating with fellow Tectonic alumnus Mumdance. Fittingly, the latter makes a brief appearance on "Imperial Flood" - on the high-octane, mind-altering madness of "Zoned In" - but otherwise the album is the solo Logos set we've been craving for some time. It sees Parker saunter between moody, unsettling ambience, psychedelic electronica, spaced-out experimental soundscapes (see the clandestine "Lighthouse Dub"), and the kind of hard-to-define workouts whose hard-edged rhythmical pulse plays second fiddle to atmospheric electronics and intergalactic modular noise. In other words, it's Parker veering away from the dancefloor with impressively out-there results.

Dirty Dubstep/Trap/Grime

  2. Iglew - "Lullaby" (4:39)
  3. Spooky & Boylan - "Peckham To Hackney" (3:44)
  4. Jawside - "Blurred Rain" (3:32)
Review: Instrumental grime pioneers Boxed stay fixed to the split artist approach on their second 12", scoring cuts from Logos, Iglew, Jawside and a Spooky & Boylan collaboration. For those unable to attend the regular Boxed dances throughout London and beyond, this is a great snapshot of some of the music that soundtracks them with collective co-founder Logos leading the charge. His "Marked 4 Death Gunman" flips the classic Slewdem crew Gunman riddim, adding his own hardcore twist with "Lullaby" from Gobstopper graduate Iglew offering a neat thrust between moments of calm and chaos. Spooky & Edgem Records artist Boylan trace a line between South and East London on "Peckham to Hackney" whilst Oxford-based newcomer Jawside closes out the 12? with hyper-effective angular dancefloor bomb "Blurred Rain."

  1. In Reverse PIV
  2. Turrican 2
  3. Wut It Do (12" mix)
  4. Truth
Review: Signing up to Keysound after past appearances on Tectonic amongst others, Mumdance and Logos bring their fresh perspective on fractured rhythms that come on like a distant echo of what dubstep started all those years ago. "In Reverse PIV" comes on positively avant-garde with its reversed percussion and highly strung pads, while "Turrican 2" decimates drum machine house tropes with a wrecking ball of bass and plenty of stop-start action. "Wut It Do" taps into the vanguard of hardcore revivalism and brings a hip hop cut-up slant to proceedings, and then "Truth" splays out in an entirely different direction made up slow, scattered drums and wistful strings. It's as singular a collection of bass music as you're likely to hear any time soon.

  7. Room 2 Lazer

Review: After spending much time linking up on the likes of Keysound and Tectonic, two of the sprightliest minds in the contemporary grime-infected bass swells of the UK scene consummate their partnership with this heavyweight long player. With that unclassifiable flair that has marked out so many worthy producers in recent times, the spirits of rave, techno, dubstep and much more all equally feed into the tracks, from the Beltram-baiting heat of "Dance Energy (89 Mix)" to the nail-biting pressure of "Chaos Engine". If you want to test the temperature of where the most upfront club music is headed, then Mumdance and Logos are more than qualified to give you the lowdown.

  1. Move Your Body (6:32)
  2. Hall Of Mirrors (6:13)
Review: Originally released in 2015 on Bristol's Tectonic, these two tracks by UK grime/bass experimentalists Mumdance and Logos caused quite a frenzy in their original, abrasive formats. But if that was not enough, industrial techno experts Perc and Truss have thought it suitable to step in and inject them with more power and aggression on these two nasty pasties and all we can recommend is: strap yourself in for a wild ride! The clang and clatter of the original version of "Move Your Body" is all there, but powered by an industrial strength four to the floor groove that will shake the walls of any dark strobe-lit warehouse party in Berlin or Bristol alike. The more minimal and stripped back "Hall Of Mirrors" is full of dark energy, with its overdriven kick, harsh metallic texture strikes and bouncy synth grumbles taking you straight to hell.

  2. Mumdance & Logos - "Legion" (VIPinch mix) (5:17)
Review: Tectonic's double-A Team come correct! Frequent collaborators Logos, Mumdance, and Pinch come together for a killer white label 12" on the latter's Tectonic label, who incidentally are fairly ruling it in 2015!! Leading the way is a VIP rendition of Pinch and Mumdance's 2014 call to arms "Turbo Mitzi", renamed here quite appropriately as "Double Barrelled Mitzi" as it kicks like a load of buckshot to the chest. Complementing that is Pinch's long sought after VIP mix of the Mumdance and Logos game-changer "Legion". One of those no-questions-asked, purchase is necessary kind of 12"s.
