Cat: PHI 05. Rel: 21 Jul 15
Disco/Nu-Disco
  1. Bing Ji Ling - "Hangin' On A String" (Lexx reconstruction) (4:43)
  2. Lexx - "All That Is Now" (4:16)
Review: Linen fresh Balearica from Swiss soul man Lexx. First up is a slight re-pointing of Bing Ji Ling's "Hanging On A String". Still fresh from his Paqua adventures, the crisp guitars and Doobie Brothers harmonies are maintained as Lexx adds more pluck to the low end. "All That Is Now" lowers the tempo a little, easing us into a steamy deep bath of fragrant pads of delicately over-layered arpeggios and more shimmering guitars. A perfectly timed summer record.

Disco/Nu-Disco
  1. Sirocco
  2. Slow Burning
  3. Slow Burning (Mudd remix)
Review: This is little gem has been floating about since late last summer and thankfully will be getting a proper 12" release very soon. Balearic disco heaven much along the lines of Reverso 68, it comes across like Indeep and Chris Rea in the blender together with it's driving guitar licks, the unhurried walking bassline and the soft Kalimba touches. Bound for big things this late summer and hopefully golden autumn too. There's the added bonus of a Mudd remix of the B-side track "Slow Burning".

Young Corner (limited sillk-screen printed vinyl 12'')
Cat: PHI 02. Rel: 28 Aug 14

Disco/Nu-Disco
  1. Turning Tides
  2. Mahogany
  3. Serenity
Review: Young Corner is something of a welcome return from Swiss producer Alex "Lexx" Storer, a producer whose grasp of atmosphere and emotion is matched by a keen ear for what works on the dancefloor. A-side "Turning Tides" is particularly good, delivering a typically Balearic fusion of shuffling, deep house rhythms, and tactile synth bass, sun-kissed textures and gloriously rich, disco-influenced guitars. It feels like the sort of track that would lead to "moments" when dropped at the right time. "Mahogany" is slower, with bolder electronics and crispier guitars joining a thick, dub-influenced bassline. Finally, "Serenity" pushes the Balearic dial to max via dreamy chords, clipped guitars and cascading electronics.

Eminent Times
Cat: MSL 07. Rel: 05 Nov 10
Disco/Nu-Disco
  1. Eminent Times (Lexx edit)
  2. So Different (Lexx edit)
  3. Go (Lexx edit)
  4. Kimbayero (Lexx edit)
Review: Some four years after Lexx debuted "Eminent Times", his masterful blend of Prince and The Who, the Swiss edit maestro opts to finally release the track as one of four superlative and varied edits for the Messalina imprint. "Eminent Times" opens the EP in fine style and the quality is matched throughout, none more so than on "So Different Here", a sugary tweak of a Rachel Sweet rarity that is filled with idiosyncratic sonic flourishes. Switching styles up again on the flip, the source material for "Go" is purported to be happy-go-lucky disco funkateers Spargo, but it's hard to tell on this deep twilight disco jam. Finally, Weyman Corporation's brilliant afro disco cut "Kumbayero" gets straightened out for ease of DJ play. Top release.

  8. Wave II (reprise) (2:19)
  9. Vibrate (4:25)
  10. Universal Prayer (4:41)
  11. Equanimity (2:15)
Review: Given that Alex Storrer released his first Lexx record way back in 2001, this album is way overdue. It's Storrer's first as Lexx following an abstract 2002 ambient set as Lexxodus. "Cosmic Shift" is as warm, groovy, Balearic and beguiling as you'd expect with Storrer joining the dots between yacht rock, dub, deep house, ambient, folk, new age and lazy Latin grooves. Interestingly, Storrer successfully takes to the mic on numerous occasions, while guests including Woolfy, Ella Thompson and Harriet Brown also lend a hand. The results are uniformly superb, which begs the question: why didn't he do it sooner? Let's hope it won't be 20 years before we get a sequel.

Cat: PHI 14. Rel: 01 Apr 19
Disco/Nu-Disco
  1. Too Hot (4:12)
  2. Too Hot (version) (4:12)
Review: Swiss Balearic overlord Lexx returns with his first single of 2019. As with many of his recent releases, "Too Hot" is a collaborative affair, with Permanent Vacation regular (and longtime friend) Simon 'Woolfy' James swinging by the studio to lend a hand. James delivers a hazy and glassy-eyed vocal perfectly suited to the duo's chugging, Balearic style synth-pop/dub reggae backing track. In authentic reggae fashion, the flipside features a more spaced-out instrumental "Version" rich in whistling lead lines, delay-laden space synths, warm dub bass and tropical guitar flourishes. As much as we like the vocal mix, it's the flipside take that really sets our pulses racing.

  14. Dunkelziffer - "See It"
Review: Claremont 56's limited edition, hand-numbered Originals CDs are fast turning into must-buy compilations for eclectic, Balearic-minded listeners. The latest inspired selector to sift through the crates is Swiss adventurer Alex "Lexx" Storrer. Predictably, it's another thrillingly eclectic collection, packed to rafters with unlikely cuts, forgotten gems and recent finds. Opening with the stoned psychedelia of A Band Called O and Kash's winding "Percussion Sundance" (a Swedish Scandolearic jam from 1982), Storrer proceeds to showcase a touchy-feely blend of calming early deep house (Far East Recording, Larry Heard), bizarre disco (Disconnection), Afro oddities (Black Light) and Balearica (Mad Professor's "People of Yoruba", Rexy's odd "Don't Turn Me Away"). Impeccable, as always.

State Of Resilience
Cat: LXMZK 01. Rel: 09 Jan 20
Deep House
  1. Lunatic Dolphin (6:05)
  2. State Of Resilience (6:17)
  3. Duster (5:30)
Review: Alex Storrer has spent the last few years producing and releasing decidedly Balearic, sun-kissed sounds under the now familiar Lexx alias. Here he flips the script, donning the previously unused LX72 pseudonym to deliver a three-track EP that explores his deep house and Detroit beatdown influences. He superbly sets the tone via A-side "Luantic Dolphin", a warm, toasty and groovy affair in which classic deep house chords, restless bass and watery sound effects rise above a disco-influenced drum track. Over on side B the fun continues with the deeper and even more bass-heavy shuffle of "State of Resilience", not to mention the hazy, jammed-out beatdown bliss of "Duster".
