Deep House
  1. Rising (Ron Trent remix) (7:57)
  2. Rising (6:24)
Review: Hot on the heels of "Mission" earlier this year, Shuya Okino's Kyoto Jazz Sextet troupe present another gem from last year's Unity album complete with a remix of the highest calibre. This time the cascading, Latin rhythm and frenetic horn leads of "Rising" are given the midas dancefloor touch by none other than Ron Trent. Maintaining the wily spirit of the original while coating in warm organ blasts and subtly bumping kicks, it's a precision translation that brings the original into a whole new context.

Review: Back in 2015, Kyoto Jazz Massive founder Shuya Okino decided to eschew the nu-jazz fusions with which he made his name in favour of a more traditional sound. Since then, his Kyoto Jazz Sextet has been responsible for a string of outstanding releases. Unity is the six-piece band's second album and naturally contains a string of impressively positive, life-affirming jazz jams. Check, in particular, the near 14-minute Tomoki Sanders collaboration "Song for Unity", a high-octane affair featuring all manner of increasingly sweaty saxophone, piano and trumpet solos. Elsewhere, be sure to check out the two superb vocal numbers featuring talented chanteuse Navasha Daya ("Love Light", in particular, sounds like a future anthem in the making), as well as Pharoah Sanders tribute "Extra Freedom".

  1. You've Got To Have Freedom (7:13)
  2. Mission (unreleased take) (7:00)
Review: Since coming together earlier in the decade, the Kyoto Jazz Sextet - nu-jazz outfit Kyoto Jazz Massive's "proper jazz" partner project - has provided us with a string of brilliant and beguiling records. This is another. It sees them join forces with Fertile Ground singer Navasha Daya and regular collaborator Tomoki Sanders to cover Pharoah Sanders classic "You Got To Have Freedom". Their version is brilliantly breezy and life affirming, adding layers of summery solos and extra soulful flavour to one of jazz's most positive and awe-inspiring vocal numbers. On the flip you'll find a previously unheard recording of the sextet's best-known (and possibly best-loved) original composition, "Mission". It is fantastic, and sounds like it would get jazz dancers particularly hot under the collar.
