Aphrology (vinyl 12")
Cat: MOSDEEP 013. Rel: 02 Nov 12
Techno
  1. Criminology (part 1)
  2. Criminology (part 2)
  3. Aphrology (Aroy edit)
  4. Aphrology (original version)
Review: The Aphrology EP marks a killer induction into the MOS Deep annals of excellence from Ksoul & Muteoscillator, the Italian duo who have impressed intermittently with their dense brand of techno for Uzuri and Kinda Soul Recordings (which is overseen by Ksoul himself). The two part "Criminology" opens proceedings face up, with the restrained acid leanings of the opening gambit slightly overwhelmed by the unrelenting modulated brutality of its subsequent partner. Face down and MOS Deep ringleader Aroy Dee sneaks in with his own edit of "Aphrology" before Ksoul and Muteoscillator can demonstrate the title track's prowess - it's Dee to a tee, taking the well judged house that swells with ever menacing machine squeals and adding his own subtle percussive embellishments.

Soul Hell (12")
Cat: DKMNTL 013. Rel: 24 Jul 13
Deep House
  1. Soul Hell
  2. Stinger
  3. Detrance
Review: Stefano "Ksoul" Boati and Paolo "MuteOscillator" Giangrasso join the Dekmantel fray having previously issued their brand of dusty, degraded house - a severely neglected Marcellus Pittman perhaps - through Aroy Dee's MOS Recordings, Azuri and their own Kinda Soul Recordings. Their style remains very much in evidence on the three track Soul Hell 12?, with the title track standing out thanks to its wonderfully insouciant blend of tough kick drums, molten synth lines and playful key patterns that demonstrate Boati and Giangrosso's musicality. "Stinger" meanwhile is a deeper excursion characterized by its bassline squelch and subdued Detroit chords, while "Detrance" sees them indulge their experimental side, with a combination of stumbling beats and loose electronic textures that recalls the similarly abstracted house of labelmates Juju & Jordash. More essential wares from Dekmantel...

12 Inches Of Sinergy EP (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: UZURI 025. Rel: 04 Sep 17
Deep House
  1. That's How It's Meant To Be
  2. Hang On + On
  3. Hang On + On (2nd version)
Review: It's been a hot minute since we last heard from Ksoul & Muteoscillator, who originally surfaced around 2010 with some excellent appearances on their own Kinda Soul label, M>O>S and Dekmantel. They've also got previous history with Uzuri, where they make their return with three cuts of cosy, machine powered house music. "That's How It's Meant To Be" is a thoughtful jam that pairs lingering keys with rounded bass for the gentler kind of dancefloor. "Hang On + On" is equally laid back, but laced with a jazz funk flair and a subtle thread of acid, while the "2nd Version" of the track pushes into more tracky territory.

  1. Ksoul & Muteoscillator - "Take 1"
  2. Chicago Skyway - "Resolution M"
  3. Juju & Jordash - "Killing Raul With Acid"
  4. Slowburn - "Meteor"
Review: Uzuri continue a fine run of record releasing form with this EP that culls talent from various international corners of the electronic world. Kicking off K Soul & Muteoscillator drop pounding stripped back Windy City machine funk on "Take 1" which comes replete with increasingly spasmodic 303 squiggles and desperate analogue riffs. "Resolution M" the subsequent offering from Chicago Skyway is resolutely deeper, laying some vintage Heard style ethereal synths down as the backdrop to a lolloping metallic kick drum groove. On the flip JuJu & Jordash stick two gloriously acid tinged fingers up at anyone who dismisses the duo as mere deep house fodder with the grainy 303 textures of "Killing Raul With Acid". Irish newcomer Slowburn rounds off a solid and at points surprising twelve inch with the stripped down rhythmic drum track "Meteor".

  1. Rick Wade - "Loosingher"
  2. Rick Wade - "Drift"
  3. KSoul & Muteoscillator - "Funkin' Our Ass"
Review: Detroit don Rick Wade pops up on Italian imprint Kinda Soul with a brace of deep house treats. Wade's "Loosingher" and "Drift" take up the A-Side, with the organ-filled jazzy undertones of the former only just shading the crisp thump of the latter. KSoul & Muteoscillator team up for "Funkin' Our Ass" on the flip, which serves as a master class in how to combine crisp percussion, warm chords and drowned out vocal samples into one hell of a groove.
