Review: After a bit of time away due in part to the pandemic and other geo-political factors, Dusty Donuts is now back and serving up sugar hip hop treats. This new 7" packs in five fine beats from a mix of artists, namely DJ Robert Smith, Marc Hype, Naughty NMX and Jim Sharp. This is the second in the Weapons of Choice series and it is a mix of classic 90s beats and intoxicating samples. The joints go from deep and laid back to more jazzy and sax laced. 'Scratchdeeznuts 1 & 2' is a cut-up and chopped loop for advanced DJ deployment only.

Double A - "Iko (Never Felt This Way)" (4:18)
Jim Sharp - "Tell Me What To Do" (3:37)
Review: Jim Sharp presents his sophomore Mountain 45s release, following up the absolute banger of a debut, 'Westchester Eagle'. Coming full circle, we hear Sharp team back up with fellow producer Double A here; on the A we've got the latter's 'Iko (Never Felt This Way)', a fearless cross-section of big beat, Latin funk and sampled West African refrains, while Sharp helms up the B-side this time around, with a full-horseshoe'd rerub of an (ashamedly on our part) unknown funk delight.

Hobber Mallow - "Here I Am" (4:46)
Jim Sharp - "10th Wonder" (3:37)
Review: The story to this one goes like this: a number of years ago, the Resense label boss Oonops was DJing with legendary digger Nightmares on Wax. He dropped the original of this tune and the dancers went wild. A few years later and Oonops found the original, as well s the man who made it, and asked for a new and exclusive 45-edit. That is what is presented here on the a-side, a raw, lo-fi, deep cut funk stomper with throwback vocals. UK DJ and producer Jim Sharp then gets invited on the flip side to serve up a new heavy hitter. It is driven by a knotted bassline, snappy hits and a crisp beat, with spoken word vocals and raps adding detail.

Rubber Band (Jim Sharp edit) (3:55)
The Light (Jim Sharp edit) (4:12)
Review: The Dust Donuts crew return with a reissue of another delicious 7"s of perfectly aged funk and hip hop sounds. Canadian-born, London-based DJ Jim Sharp was at the controls for this third volume and first up his edits 'Rubber Band.' It has big woodblock hits and brash horn leads with a percolating rhythm that rises and falls in dramatic and emotive fashion. The flip is an edit of a classic hip hop Joint, 'The Light', with the aching original vocal left in place next to lush piano chords and dusty golden era beats.

Old Digger (Jim Sharp edit) (3:56)
Review: For the 20th release on the Berlin-based Dusty Donuts label, they have tapped Londoner Jim Sharp again, who was responsible for their very first release back in 2014. On 'Feelin' Good', Sharp and DJ Goce sample J Dilla track on a lush track, with a late night smoky jazz bar kind of vibe throughout. The sound on B side track 'Old Digger" was made famous by Kanye West however Sharp's edit here injects thumping drums, vocal stabs and a different era of Jazz swing.

Review: Ff45 (Friday's Funky 45) welcome Canada's finest Jim Sharp back to the fore with two 7"-ready sure-shots, of the remix/reinterpretation/covers variety. On the A, we hear a flip of J-Lo's pop classic 'Get Right' but reconstructed to dazzling effect, with every part rerecorded impeccably and placed into a fresh breaks-funk context. The B, meanwhile, reinterprets the Armand Van Helden/Common hip-disco-house classic, 'Full Moon'.

Review: Jim Sharp is a hip beat maker, a member of the Dusty Donuts DJ crew, famed for his clever blends and an alumnus of several key labs who really knows how to rock a party when he steps up to the decks. He draws on all that now with two new cuts stamped with his own signature sound on Canada's Black Buffalo Records. 'Lucifa' (Jim Sharp mix) takes classic dub and ragga motifs and layers in hard-hitting drums, hip-hop bars and big breaks to pump the party. Flip it over for 'Bam Bam' (Jim Sharp mix) which is a fat dub with big horns and another fine entry into this man's back cat.

My Amour (3:28)
On My Steez (3:45)
Review: Eastside Edits ensures a steady stream of funky edits, house, hip hop and disco on 7" vinyl, in a similar vein to our mainstay DJ Bacon. This is the fourth record to be released under their musical umbrella; two tracks, one per side, is the usual format, a convention to which this record more than gladly conforms. 'My Amour' on the A is label owner Jim Sharp's funky and bombastic remix-take on Stevie Wonder's melancholic hit 'Ma Cherie Amour'. The B-side, 'On My Steez', deals in a similarly potent concoction, sampling 90s girl band 702 and their track 'Steelo', flattening it into pure breaks and acapellas. Beautiful Ontarian calmer-downers.

Review: Jim Sharp is the Toronto-born, London-based beatsmith devoted to the hip-hop tradition. We're talking cut-up breaks, 45 singles, deep digging and funk above all else. He's been busy with crews like Dusty Donuts from Germany, putting out a steady stream of edits and flips of classic tracks over the past few years, and now he's bringing it on home by doing his thing over on Canadian label Black Buffalo. Both edits on this 7" take sure shot hip-hop tracks in new directions, appealing to those who like to hear deeper cuts given a fresh shakedown, and Jim Sharp undoubtedly has the chops to do it.

Review: London-based DJ and producer Jim Sharp sets his sights on Method Man and Busta Rhymes' 'What's Happenin' Ye and The Game's 'Eazy'. The former is a gothic rap that is classic East Coast attitude, which makes sense for someone who grew up on it, whilst 'Eazy' transforms the track into a dark funk track, perfect for bumping in the whip at midnight. Review: The Soul Sisters label once again pays tribute to the great voices of soul music from over the years. This one comes from the studio of Jm Sharp, who was looked away during look down, keeping himself warm on cold long nights with his own effervescing edit jobs. his one is a sure fire floor filler with side-a intertwining two versions of tunes that pay homage to the Sunshine State with boom bap drums. Trippin' Out (Jim Sharp edit) (3:52)
Review: Mash-up maestro, bootleg remix king and talented beat-maker Jim Sharp launched the Soul By The Pound label last year to offer up sneaky re-edits of classic soul and funk jams from the '60s and '70s. Here he finally delivers the imprint's second-single, delivering some Blaxploitation-era goodness that should tickle the fancy of all those who like their funk energetic and enthusiastic. A-side "I Got It Funky" more than lives up to its name, with call-and-response vocals, wah-wah guitars, tasty Hammond licks and rising horns riding a snappy, breakbeat-driven groove. He switches focus a little on flipside "Trippin' Out", adding bouncy hip-hop beats to a dewy-eyed, string-laden slab of Curtis Mayfield style soul.

FTP (Jim Sharp remix) (2:55)
FTP (instrumental) (2:56)
Review: In his career to date, Jim Sharp has proved to be one of the bootleg remix and mash-up scene's smartest and most successful producers - a man capable of brilliantly breathing new life into a string of familiar favourites. He's at it again here, offering up fresh reconstructions of N.W.A's gangster rap classic "F*ck Tha Police". The killer flip is his A-side "Main Mix", in which he places the L.A crew's iconic acapella over a jumpy, party starting hip-hop beat rich in sampled short funk guitar riffs, snare and kick-heavy drums, James Brown style yelps and tight scratches. It's a great beat - so good, in fact, that the flipside instrumental mix is equally as essential as the club-rocking vocal version.

God Lives Through A Southern Gul (Jim Sharp edit)
Review: When it comes to DJ-friendly reworks, re-edits and mash-ups, few producers can boast quite as strong a track record as Jim Sharp. Here he proves our point with another pair of certified dancefloor heaters. On the A-side he takes his scalpel to Q-Tip's typically jazzy and bass-heavy 1999 hip-hop cut "Ride", adding a little more grunt to the bass and beats whilst retaining the essence of the Tribe Called Quest man's superb original version. On the flip he delivers a radically different revision of Rahzel's "Southern Girl", placing Erykah Badu's superb lead vocal atop an entirely different Tribe Called Quest beat. It turns it into a dusty, jazzy, head-nodding treat.

Review: Jim Sharp slows things down a little with a pair of edits from the American South. Early West Coast gangsta hit "Dopeman" is the subject of side a with original drums but extended breaks designed to get the floor pumping. On the flip is a dirty south classic with prickling 808 kicks and hi hats that hit hard. It's super sweet soul music with raw grooves that can get any party started topped with vocals from Willie Hutch finishing things off in real style.

Cave In (Jim Sharp mix) (3:39)
Review: Over the last couple of years, there's been a noticeable rise in the number of 7" singles featuring on DJ-friendly re-edits of break-heavy funk and soul favourites. Leading the charge has been the Dusty Donuts label and a group of dusty-fingered producers including Jim Sharp. Here, the latter briefly breaks free of the imprint to deliver two more tried-and-tested jams that blend classic drum breaks and instrumental loops with similarly well-loved hip-hop acapellas. A-side "Gangsta Walk" is the one for us, featuring as it does bongo-laden breaks tailor-made for doubling up, the swirling strings of a much-loved Quantic Soul Orchestra favourite , and Coolio. In other words, it's a tasteful and on-point mash-up that will get the dancefloor moving.

Made (remix) (3:25)
Review: Canadian-born, London-based DJ Jim Sharp strikes gold again, a mid-tempo jazz hip-hop 7" featuring the flow of Marlon Craft, crisp bars and a silky smooth tone that doesn't skip a beat. Big horns, scratching and boom-bap drums punctuate Craft's message in such an effortless way it leaves you wanting more (Don't pretend you wouldn't want an album with these two laying down the law). The flipped remix is really the star of the show, it would be more shocking if it weren't there frankly. Sharp does what he does best, chopping up and scratching like the best of them whilst a xylophone beat overlays the blown-up strings. It's that perfect blend of jazz, late 90s bling-era hip-hop and "conscious rap" (whatever you want to call it - it'll always be "abstract" to a Tribe fan). The perfect skating anthem.

Now he's up on Soul By The Pound with a couple of snappy Brazilian edits, going in on the eternal Sergio Mendes classic 'Man Que Nada' on the A side and giving it a subtle nip and tuck. HIs take on 'Westchester Eagle' take plenty of subtle cues form the original such as the tumbling drum breaks and neat little chord riffs, but layers in some airy vocals and funky kicks. Review: For the imprint's second release, Private Stock Records welcomes some serious mash-up/bootleg remix royalty: Dusty Donuts regular Jim Sharp. He's in fine form too, breathing new life into a sugary 21st century R&B classic by placing the all-female vocals atop crunchy, B-Boy friendly hip-hop beats, jazzy guitar licks and hazy organ stabs. Similarly lauded Canadian producer Flipout takes over on side B, craftily adding verses from a golden-era hip-hop classic to a backing track seemingly crafted from snippets of a hazy old funk track and some suitably floor-friendly hip-hop beats. Mash-ups they may be, but these are brilliantly crafted and sound like genuine future club-rockers.As played by DJ Koco
