SMALLHOURS 005
Cat: SMALLHOURS 005. Rel: 30 Sep 22

Minimal/Tech House
Former Landlords - "Council Pop" (6:59)
Session 4000 - "Off" (5:09)
Mop Py - "Beskar" (6:49)
Jad & The - "Who Is It?" (5:23)
Review: Youandewan's Small Hours label is indeed small but beautifully formed so far. This fifth transmission is another doozy that collects four different artists who all operate on the spaced out end of the electronic house and minimal spectrum. The Former Landlords kick off with breezy and balmy 90s tech house style sounds on 'Council Pop' then Session 4000 go 'Off' with plenty of sci-fi pads and clipped, kinetic drum programming as well as some playful vocal samples. Mop Py' 'Beskar' is a more psychedelic late night wonder with gurgling bass and lovely neon synth trails. Jad & The complete this essential slab of wax.

Marlon Hoffstadt - "Heavily Dancing On The Ones & Twos" (6:43)
Jesse Bru - "Tonite" (6:51)
Jad & The - "Gospel Five" (5:07)
Turenne - "Triplett" (4:37)
Review: Federic Lange's AOW just keeps on bringing the heat. Their eighty EP is no exception. Sometimes the heat is blazing with vibrant synth flames (Hoffstadt's "Heavenly Dancing"), sometimes it's smouldering MAW-style (Jesse Bru's "Tonite"), sometimes it's smoking, jazzy and moderately jacked (Jad & The's "Gospel Five") and sometimes it's plain scorching (Turenne's "Triplett"). In summary: hot.

Deep House
Duke Hugh - "Zoe" (2:26)
Research Club - "Cafe Iguana" (5:36)
Paula Tepe - "Panamericana" (5:02)
Jad & The - "Deep Dark Grimey Dancefloor Moment" (6:05)
Shy One - "House Party" (4:23)
Session Victim - "Gheister" (2:10)
Review: The second sampler for Rhythm Section International's fifth anniversary compilation has landed, and like its predecessor is packed to the rafters with must-check gear. Duke Hugh kicks things off with the short-but-sweet, Rhodes-powered soundscape "Zoe", before Research Club delivers some bubbly pitched-down acid ("Cafe Iguana") and Paula Tepe jams out some quirky proto-house goodness ("Panamericana"). Over on side B Jad Lee (as Jad & The) takes over with some deep, reggae-influenced breakbeat house, before handing the baton to Shy One with the deep, bruk-up dreaminess of "House Party". Session Victim provides a fittingly strong conclusion with the quirky deep house drowsiness of "Gheister".

Bilateral Dreams
Review: Berlin-based Aussie Jad & The (?) has changed musical direction, forgoing his former expressions in late night deep house for classic techno sounds inspired by the early '90s, as heard on his EP called Infinite Autonomy which inaugurates the Speed Dial imprint. The title track on the A side receives a rework by Priori which takes the track into evocative realms in its exploration of broken beat electronica, while over on the flip the swing-fuelled acid techno of 'Civil Servant Ain't Civil' is sure to get you tweaking, followed by the strobed-out techno of 'Bilateral Dreams' closing it out in tunnel vision style.

Mastermind (5:43)
Transorbital Express (5:36)
Way To Kill (6:06)
Space Infinitum (6:03)
Outer Planet (6:40)
Review: Cardiff-based imprint Haws has dealt in plenty of class house sounds to date, and now it's the turn of Jad & The to take the baton. Across a well finessed five track EP, there are gliding grooves like the jittery 'Mastermind' to get you going, then 'Transorbital Express' to really take things to a higher energetic plane. The sound design throughout is lavish and detailed, with plenty of sci-fi flair and cosmic pads layered over punchy kicks. The basslines throughout are also expertly executed for maximum impact on knowing dance floors.

Archy Krules (6:42)
Review: Aussie deep house maverick Jad & The seems to have ditched his long standing muse these days, and it shows on this lastest missive on Julius Steinhoff's Down By The Lake imprint. This single is filled with four splendid dusted down and deeply executed jams perfect for heartfelt moments on late night dancefloors. Highlights include the romantic, smoky "Two Dancing", the sultry heat of "That's Cool" with its emotive clarinet lead and strong percussive elements, and Moomin's hazy, emotive remix of "Archy Krules" on the flip. With its rough 'n' tough breaks, gloomy chords and cut up samples throughout - this is one seriously moody but groovy number.

Review: Berlin's Toy Tonics crew are back with some of last year's exceptional highlights finally made available on vinyl for all you black wax junkies out there. On the A side of Top Tracks 06 we have the loveable Aussie maverick Jad & The on the loved-up disco loops of "Strings That Never Win", followed by London's Harry Wolfman (Dirt Crew/House Of Disco) with the lo-slung funk of "The Accord". Flip to the B-side where you will be treated to Italian duo Black Loops and their uplifting boogie-down jam "Mia Negrita" (feat Felipe Gordon) and ascendant Austrian Demuja doin' his thing as always on the sultry late-night groove "J On G".

Review: SlothBoogie is one of London's most highly respected underground electronic music crews, encompassing a DJ collective, record label, radio show and regular party series. For their third edition, they've roped in Aussie larrikin Jad & The with the saxed-up, balearic disco loops of "Debbie Does Delay" and Tender Games with the sultry and sunkissed lo-slung groove of "So Hot". On the flip, the crafty edit action continues with Swales "Feel This Way" and the label head honchos SlothBoogie themselves with some sexy boogie-down (!) action on "Acid Fantasy".

Jad & The - "Phife Tip" (5:52)
Review: Malmo's Honey Butter Records is run by Sune & Vitamin D, and they call out to friends from far and wide on their new various artists EP. 'Pelican Disco' features five tracks that range from jovial jazz and disco delights to downright machine stomp. Starting with Liverpool's Lucas Welle (Roots For Bloom) who delivers the lo-slung groove that is "By All Means", while Just Baker also appears on the A aide with the late night boogie-down antics of "Dreamin'". On the flip, we've got Tilman & Will Buck with some rather hypnotic slo-mo percussive action on "Untitled Island" followed by Aussie larrikin Jad & The with the emotive deepness of "Phife Tip".
