Bazz & Iron Curtis - "KMS" (Soulphiction remix)
Whatabouttalkabout
Review: Baaz's fledgling Office Recordings returns with its second release and a second edition of the What About Talk About series. "Owl's Theme" sees Baaz at the buttons, swiftly aligning to a vigorous bassline that provides the momentum whilst the Berliner shows his palette of classicist 909 rhythms and pumping piano chords. Complementing this, "Those Things" sounds more vibrant and colourful, with the drums less prominent amidst the magic inducing textures. On the flip Soulphiction turns in a wondrous remix of the Baaz and Iron Curtis track "K.M.S.", all glowering, emotive synth flourishes and subtle kicks, whilst "Whatabouttalkabout" showcases Baaz's talent for more esoteric sounds, eschewing the need for kicking drums to focus on a luscious electronic arrangement.

What Happened Happened (Berg Reduktion) (5:52)
Review: Our favourite German deep house producer Iron Curtis lands on the Office Recordings label after a relatively long period of silence. The KMS Years is Curtis at his best, where tracks like "Magnet" prove why this guy is underrated as hell; chunky deep house beats are looped into a tight groove and drizzled in just the right amount of dirt. "What Happened, Happened" is slower, dirtier, more swamped and certainly more experimental but it still manages to retain Curtis' palpable injection of soul. A serious EP, check it.

Tim Toh - "Hidden Beauty" (5:19)
Review: Johannes Albert's Berlin based imprint Frank Music is on a roll right now. Their new compilation series celebrates five years in business and what a way to celebrate, drafting NYC deep house legend Fred P with the sublime "Energy Cloud" which is one of his best tracks of late in our opinion, Berliner Iron Curtis with the ultra-smooth deepness of "Operater 123" (live mix)" and the epic dancefloor drama "Got The Juice" showcasing Freer and Reilling's typical studio magic as always. The most upbeat offering is by Tim Toh who has previously released on Philpot and Ornaments with "Hidden Beauty" a late noughties style journey in the vein of classic Innervisions, Buzzin Fly or Freerange.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Slight denting to the corners of the outer sleeve, slight surface marks on the record, product in perfect working order***

While second guessing what Iron Curtis will offer up next is always tricky, you can guarantee that it will be deep, alien sounding and hugely atmospheric. This trademark sensibility is at the heart of "And The Temper", an intoxicating, otherworldly EP that sees him drift between wonky dancefloor electronica ("010103"), dusty interludes ("And The Temper"), electrofunk-influenced broken house deepness ("Mars (Epoch Mix)"), intergalactic late night futurism ("Arash"), ultra-deep analogue workouts (the fuzzy, slightly stoned warmth of "Fine Fine") and mind-soothing ambient bliss (superb closing cut "Strategie '98").

See Ya
L & P
Review: Iron Curtis is back on Hudd Traxx with the second installment of his Lights EP. Much like the first round that dropped earlier in the year, the man like Johannes Paluka is on sterling form, dealing in the kind of refined yet earthen, deep but punchy house music he's built his name on to date. "Spectral" is the consummate opener, deft piano chords and rock solid drums with additional dubby FX pulsing through the mix. "Well Well Well" is a sunnier affair aiming for that euphoric terrace moment, while "See Ya" brings a rough swing to the party with a cosy, intimate line in soulful sample licks. "L&P" finishes the EP off with a warm, acidic bassline and more of that deep diving beatdown business.

Captured
22 Days
My Humming Machines
Review: Iron Curtis' back catalogue is a formidable beast within the realms of deep and tech house, touching on labels like Morris Audio, Jackoff, Sudden Drop and Mule Electronique. He's intermittently popped up on Hudd Traxx as well, and he returns with a fulsome new EP that hints at a forthcoming second part. "Lights" is a bold, chiseled peak timer with some emphatic string stabs coursing through it, while "Captured" takes a slinkier route without dulling the impact of the Curtis studio approach. "22 Days" is a funkier concern that lets the low end synths do the brunt of the work, and then "My Humming Machines" rounds the EP off with a warm and bubbling deep house roller for a cosier part of the night.

Reset Me (3:30)
Review: For his label's tenth edition, Switzerland's Baaz serves up a fine release by German deep house purveyor Iron Curtis on the Maple EP. Starting off with the raw, minimal and cyclical techno jack of the title track (wicked!), it's a bit of a change of pace from the label's usual preference for ultra deep or dubby aesthetics: but equally subterranean and hypnotic all the same. Speaking of which, "Collision" indeed gets with the program on this absolutely lush downtime journey, while on the flip we've got two short but sweet offerings: "Entago Entery" and the blissful "Reset Me" providing the mandatory ambient track that has been known to close out the label's recent offerings. More quality from undoubtedly one of the top labels in deep house of the moment.

Interlude In The Park
Oh, Come On
Thoughts On (2012 mix)
Review: Since his debut release on Tensnake's Mirau imprint back in 2009, Nuremberger Iron Curtis has built up a reputation for classy deep house dipped in refinement across EPs for some respected labels including Boe, Mule and Morris Audio. Ahead of a long overdue debut album on the aforementioned Mirau, Gerd entices Iron to slip out an excellent four tracker on the 4Lux imprint. Lead track on the Thoughts On EP has Mr Curtis digging into his archives to serve up an unreleased cut from 2008 in the shape of "Thoughts On", which is fairly banging and we're pretty happy it's found a home. Curtis also provides a contemporary 2012 version which adds a thicker bass line and these killer sounding snap drums. Elsewhere, "Interlude In The Park" is a short saunter through heavy emotion strained beatdown and "Oh, Come On" brings the jazz bap over a booming 808 flex.

Iron Curtis & Leaves - "You're (Way Much More Than Just) My Choice Tonight" (Mano Le Tough remix)
Review: Having released well received EPs on Tensnake's Mirau label and Mule Electronic in recent few years, as well as numerous others, Iron Curtis here finds himself on Kolour Recordings for this similarly fantastic EP. "Goma" is a warm piece of deep house that utilises a curious pitched down vocal sample which is particularly dark in its execution, whilst "You're (Way More Than Just) My Choice Tonight" is a slow moving piece of foggy disco, with a bassline so low it's almost melodically imperceptible, whilst synth chords undulate beneath the surface. The San Soda remix of "Goma" lightens the mood by sharpening up the percussion and adding some rippling keys, whilst the Mano Le Tough remix of the B-Side removes the haze and adds some virtuoso piano over the original's deep groove.

Stumbled Across
Creeps
All My Friends
Review: Iron Curtis' debut for the Retreat imprint overseen by Yanneck Salvo aka Quarion and Session Victim's Hauke Freer certainly doesn't disappoint, delivering a resolutely fine deep house moment across the A Side in "Cover Me". Swathes of Chicago loving pads punctuate the first half of a track driven by liquid drips of bass and hi-hats pimped with crispness. It's the glorious drop into silence that prefaces the arrival of highly pitched vocal, thumping 808 kicks and crazed key stabs that act as the most pleasant slap in the face you'll receive in 2010. Straying far from the deep house template, the title track "Stumbled Across" is delightfully schizophrenic attempt at beatdown, driven by a deliberately off key array of snares, hi-hats and claps. An equally stuttering approach to laying down synths and keys has a dizzyingly brilliant effect. Flipping the script further, the all too brief "Creeps" displays a talent for head nodding MPC choppage to a backdrop of ethereal chord patterns.

Iron Curtis - "Daniel"
Moomin - "I Whisper A Prayer"
Jacques Bon - "Tribute To You"
Rvds & Rau - "Umbe Data"
Review: The latest transmission from the luxuriant world of Smallville is a various artists collection that continues to weave elegiac tales via deep house means. Iron Curtis is up first with some plaintive acid in the form of "Daniel", which works pads and tender beats around the heartfelt squelch with grace. Moomin is a little more prominent in the beat department for "I Whisper A Prayer", while also feeding a hint of disco romance into a slow and simmering cut. Jacques Bon has his own acid tale to tell, and does so with a bigger nod to the jack but still keeping things respectable given the surroundings, leaving it to Rvds & Rau to happily float off on a buoyant throwdown in "Umbe Data", all positive chords and hopeful strings over a simple beat to show it's not all mournful in Hamburg.

Kink - "Kiss The Sky"
Iron Curtis - "Back Up"
Ladzinski - "Diamond"
Review: Boe Recordings first release of 2010 sees the London imprint launch the first in a series of various artist EPs. This release adds further credence to the rule that new Kink is always good Kink. "Kiss The Sky" sees the Bulgarian in inspired form, soaking a crisp percussive punch in swathes of delicately orchestrated chords which are reminiscent of Pepe Bradock's finest moments and complemented perfectly by the vocal harmony of Rachel Row. Iron Curtis marks his debut for Boe with "Backup," a superlative faceoff between handclaps and 808s with a driving melody. Finally Ladzinski is invited back after last years The Deep End EP and offers up "Diamond," a real example of hypnotic jacking house music with some subtle instrumental touches.

Iron Curtis & Leaves - "A & F" (Session Victim 612 remix) (5:40)
Session Victim - "Black Cream" (Quarions White Smoke remix) (6:21)
Review: After a few years of quiet, Ali 'Nebraska' Gibb seems to have refound his creative mojo and is popping up everywhere at the moment. Here he leads the way with a superb, playful refix of Session Victim on the latest Retreat 12", with his self-styled Soho Samba refix of the German duo's "Good Intentions" living up to its title and showing off Gibb's proficiency on the MPC. Session Victim then open the B-side with a remix of Iron Curtis & Leaves before the 12" closes on a Quarion rework of their cut "Black Cream." Both these are fine deep house numbers straight out of the Retreat text book but this 12" is all about that Nebraska remix!!
