Kinda Kickin' (Efdemin remix)
Review: There is a simple yet cunning concept to the Petite sub-division of Gent label Curle that continues to pay dividends; forgotten gems from house and techno past get fully relicensed and reissued backed with a contemporary remix. The 2010 reissue of Walt J's "Reborn" was a particular highlight thanks to the "DJ Qu's Journey Towards Birth" reinterpretation Curle secured. The first Petite release in 3 years draws for the one DJ Boom production Matthew Herbert and Charles Webster completed back in 1999, the ultra deep "Kinda Kickin", and pairs it up with a remix from Efdemin. It's a good match with Phillip Solman retaining that distinctive vocal hook whilst implementing the kind of textural detail which made this year's Efdemin LP Decay so memorable.

Fantasy (Floating Points remix) (15:12)
Might As Well Be Magical (Seven Davis Jr Multiverse edit) (6:24)
Fantasy (Herbert's Greenery dub) (9:02)
Review: Herbert's most recent album, the return-to-his-deep-house-roots treat that was Musca, has been given the remix treatment for Record Store Day 2023. It's a predictably impressive package, with Floating Points - delivering a 15-minute trip into glitchy micro-house territory in fine fashion - naturally taking top billing. His remix - kind of like a minimalist take on his own early house excursions, with added early morning weirdness - is far from the only treat on show though. Seven Davis Jr delivers a rubbery, loose-limbed and quietly funky tweak of 'Might As Well Be Magical', before Herbert steps up with his 'Greenery Dub' of 'Fantasy', a slow-burn, near 10-minute affair that recalls the oddball brilliance of his turn-of-the-millennium house releases.

Moloko - "Sing It Back" (Herbert Tasteful dub) (6:03)
Louie Austen - "Hoping" (Herbert High dub) (6:36)
Review: ***B-STOCK: Slight surface mark on the record and creasing to corner of outer sleeve, but otherwise in good working order***

In the prelude to his upcoming album 'Musca', two classic remixes appear by 'domestic house' legend Matthew Herbert. This time, they're given a never-before pairing on his own singles sublabel, Accidental Junior. In an intuitive move, the A-side houses none other than a new remaster of Herbert's classic remix of Moloko's 'Sing It Back', a song which has enjoyed an unlikely resurgence in popularity on the international hard dance circuit in recent years. On the B, one can find a lesser-known diggers' delight: Herbert's headsy 'High Dub' rerub of weirdo jazz crooner Louis Austen's 'Hoping'. As they always have been, both remixes are playful, hi-fi audiophile's auspices, dealing divinely in Herbert's trademark clockwork sound.

I Hadn't Known (I Only Heard) (7:13)
We All Need Love (8:06)
So Now (5:43)
Got To Sing (7:15)
Review: As good as his experimental and conceptual work is, it's easy to forget that Matthew Herbert was once one of deep house's most distinctive producers. If you need a reminder, we'd suggest getting your ears around this must-have reissue of one of the producer's EPs from 1998. Opener "I Hadn't Known (I Only Heard)" is an early collaboration with vocalist Dani Siciliano full of fuzz-fuelled deep house/tech-house grooves and drowsy, ambient style pads. "We All Need Love" adds a touch of garage-influenced bump to Herbert's heady deep house template, while "So Now" is a delightfully wonky and opaque affair full of mutilated bass guitar samples and more dreamy Siciliano vocals. "Got To Sing", a thrillingly bass-heavy chunk of post US garage goodness, is also superb.

See You On Monday (11:32)
Review: It's time for your regular reminder that, through every guise, scheme, political or artistic statement Matthew Herbert has gone through, he has never released a record short of exceptional. This 23 year old reissue of one of his earliest EPs is proof. Bumping with UKG roots, soul oozes from every spacious, loose-limbed groove, these are glimpses into Herbert's soul; the off-beat Zed Bias style mischief of "Rude", the cosmic faze of "Oo Licky" and the dreamy Iz & Diz style jounces of "See You On Monday", this is every bit the timeless record. Look forward to part two.

Pen (4:29)

Take Me Back (7:39)
Resident (5:33)
Review: For the fourth and final edition of Matthew Herbert's Parts series, we have four further reductions from the UK producer's back catalogue - all in his idiosyncratic style. Timeless minimal house that has truly stood the test of time and sounds as captivating as it did over 20 years ago. Part Four came out on Phono back in 1996 and is reissued here on Herbert's Accidental imprint. From the dubbed-out heroin house of "Pen", the crunchy robo-jack of "Pump", more blip, blurp and bleep on "Take Me Back" or his knack for simply straight-up and emotive deep house as heard on the utterly sublime "Resident". The tracks on here are still relevant in today's musical landscape and completely essential, in our humble opinion.

Butt-Head (8:00)
People That Make The Music (8:23)
Thinking Of You (4:56)
Review: The inimitable Matthew Herbert presents some much needed reissues from the Phono back catalogue's 'Parts' series here, on Accidental's third volume of remastered classics. The series was part of an early wave of exploratory dance music, that paved the way for a style of deep house that still works its magic on dancefloors some 25 years later. Featuring the reduced boompty-funk of "Butt-Head" or "Thinking Of You" which will no doubt appeal to the new generation of minimal heads, to moments of sublime and evocative deepness as heard on "People That Make The Music" which is up there with other such classics like "See You On Monday" and many others featured in upcoming editions.

Deeper (8:45)
Non-Stop (5:37)
Shuffler (8:06)
Review: Although now known as a formidable experimentalist who delights in doing things differently - be that making admirable concept albums or, as with his most recent work, an album that takes the form of a written book - Matthew Herbert first rose to prominence in the late 1990s as a producer of left-of-centre deep house. Here he dips into the archives and presents a second essential reissue: the "Part 2" EP, which initially landed in 1996. Side A boasts the ultra-deep thrust of "Deeper", where mutilated vocal samples and pots-and-pans percussion hits rise above a Chez Damier influenced deep house groove. Over on side B, "Non-Stop" is insanely bass-heavy (check the speaker-busting sub-bass) and crunchy, while "Shuffler" sees Herbert peppering a jazzy and swinging groove with impeccable electric piano solos.

Got To Be Movin' (8:41)
Fat King Fire (8:16)
Housewife (6:23)
Review: When it comes to house and techno reissues, few labels have quite as strong a reputation as Mint Condition. Since launching last year, they've delivered must-have material from Pepe Bradock, Paul Hester, Robert Owens and Circulation, amongst others. Here they turn their attention to the back catalogue of house-era Matthew Herbert, delivering a new pressing of 1996's Classic Herbert. All three tracks are amongst the producer's strongest dancefloor workouts. Check, for example, the bumpin', proto-boompty drums, mind-altering sub-bass and killer vocal samples of "Got To Be Movin", or the whistling melody lines, Detroit techno influences and fluid riffs of the deliciously positive "Fat King Fire". Arguably best of all, though, is the jazzier "Housewife", which feels like a template for so much of his later deep house material.

Deeper (8:42)
Deeper (Basic Soul Unit remix) (6:05)
Review: "Deeper" was originally featured on Matthew Herbert's Part Two EP, way back in 1996. Since then, that particular 12" has become something of an in-demand item, with the lead cut naturally attracting the most attention. This issue of "Deeper" contains Herbert's original in all its glory - think loopy, low-slung, jazz-flecked hypo-house with woozy, early morning breakdowns - and a fresh remix from label-hopping producer Stuart Li under his familiar Basic Soul Unit alias. He subtly beefs up and speeds up the track, adding some Detroit-influenced keys and fizzing new percussion. The result is a tasty techno revision that pays due reverence to Herbert's thrilling original.

The Wrong Place
Remember Ken
Ticket
Her Face
Review: Matthew Herbert's return to the dancefloor, via the re-launched Part series (volume one landed way back in 1995, amazingly), has been one of the good news stories of 2014. Part 8 is the third instalment in the long-running series this year, and features another quartet of wonky, left-of-centre house cuts in his inimitable style. Naturally, there's much to admire, from the piano jazz-meets-outsider house swing of "Remember Ken" and the glitch-funk of "Ticket", to the acoustic-goes-electronic pulse of "Her Face". Arguably best of all, though, is "The Wrong Place", which boasts many of Herbert's aural trademarks - think cut-up vocal edits, tipsy electronics and a delightfully odd, low-slung groove.

Bumps
Sucker
Get Strong
Pretty Daddy
Review: After several years of pushing the boundaries of experimentation within music, Matthew Herbert pulled a curveball few were expecting when he elected to return to his house music roots and continue the series of Parts 12" releases issued under his surname as far back as the mid '90s. Part 6 was a sublime way to mark this return (especially "My DJ") and Herbert looks to be inspired as this Part 7 12" feels every bit as good. Lead track "Bumps" sees Herbert working with Rahel Debebe, vocalist for Accident act Hejira, and the results have a similar charm to some of Michachu's early material though a bit more polished, a bit less ramshackle. "Sucker" is a killer DJ tool that will confuse people in the best way possible, whilst "Get Strong" is a typically idiosyncratic Herbert production with very few elements utilised expertly. Closing track "Pretty Daddy" sounds like old Roots Manuva track "Son Of The Soil" remixed by Jamal Moss (this is a good thing).

Grab The Bottle
Review: What can we say about Matthew Herbert? Well, for starters, he's one of the most eclectic artists to have blossomed from the UK house and techno scene. In fact, his sound is ever-so-difficult to pin down and categorise. Part 6, the latest four-tracker to surface on his own Accidental imprint, is Herbert at his most daring, where lo-fi beats and gnarly, whacked-out techno feature on the same 12". The glitchy, processed female vocals featuring on "Manny" are so far away from the minimalistica of "My DJ", that it's hard to tell what exactly goes on inside Herbert's mind. What we can tell, however, is that he's on top form and once again reaffirming his status as one of the most creative minds in dance music.

Back To The Start (Mr Oizo mix)
Review: Ahead of a touted revisit of Herbert's seminal Bodily Functions LP, a sterling cast of artists have been called upon to bring their own interpretations to some of those tracks originally composed from samples of bodies carrying out their day to day duties. DJ Koze is in a positively laid back mood on his version of "You Saw It All" with a swinging, Motown flavour to the groove and hopeful blasts of sampled melody. Dave Aju manages to wriggle himself into a perfectly woozy position with "Foreign Bodies", capitalising on Dani Siciliano's vocal and a particularly bugging synth. Mr Oizo gets classically chopped and cheeky with "Back To The Start", letting the beat sloppily tumble down in an irrepressible funk which contrasts nicely with the inclusion of the original version alongside it.

Beauty of a mix which will work from early sets to the late sets.
