Review: Grischa Lichtenberger's 2012 debut album for Rastor Norton, and IV [Inertia], was something of a delight for fans of glitch-inspired electronica; a wonky, post-Autechre treat, featuring delightfully abstract track titles and all the rhythmic swing of a broken computer going wild with amphetamine-fuelled drum machines. This belated follow-up develops the producer's sound further, pairing typically off-kilter rhythms - some undeniably jazz influenced, others simply odd - with both cheery and curiously unsettling melodies seemingly inspired by the golden age of Artificial Intelligence-inspired IDM. Throughout, the results are hugely entertaining, with Lichtenberger smartly playing around with mood as well as melody. It's this balance, as much as his eccentric methodology, which makes "La Demeure: Il Y A Peril En La Demure" such a rewarding listen.

Review: For his latest album on Raster-Noton - his first for the admirable electronic imprint in four years - Grischa Lichtenberger has decided to do things differently. Instead of offering up a range of new compositions of his own, he's delivered a suite of radical re-interpretations of tracks from a contemporary jazz album by saxophonist Philipp Gropper's Philm band. There are some new overdubbed elements, but almost everything heard on Lichtenberger's set originated on that album. Some of his re-imagined pieces are radically different - see the skittish, Autechre-esque electronics and piecemeal, processed instrumentation of "0319 28 Fuenf Grns 2a1 Rej+b2 (Thinking From The Future)" and "0319 02 Saturn 2f (Saturn)" - while others stick closer to Philm's originals while still putting them through the ringer via effects and wonky sound processing.

  1. Orphx - "Fault Line"
  2. Yuka - "Sadvi Lim"
  3. Tadeo - "S07"
  4. Grischa Lichtenberger - "Remel Plus" (Svreca edit)
Review: Svreca caused a bit of a stir last year when it was announced the For Your Eyes Only mix CD would only run in an addition of 50 copies. So in a way, for those that needed it, the revered DJ, producer, label owner, and bastion of Spanish techno has redeemed himself by issuing these vinyl samplers. The second edition sees the sub-zero rave of Orphx's "Fault Line" square up alongside Yuka's equally cold (and cavernous) "Sadvi Lim", a Japanese producer who once appeared on a split EP with recent Semantica signing Stanislav Tolkachev. On the B-side, long-time patriarch of Spanish dub techno, Tadeo, delivers a metallic, and during some passages, mind-bending "S07", while Raster-Noton artist Grischa Lichtenberger provides his most decidedly techno production yet thanks to an ominous Svreca edit.

Review: Raster-Noton affiliate Grischa Lichtenberger and recent Where To Now? contributor Jesse Osborne-Lanthier team up for the latest release from Shapednoise, Ascion and D. Carbone's Cosmo Rhythmatic label, with their work on Conversations Sur Lettres Mortes complemented by a small clutch of remixes. The A-side is taken up by some six tracks from Osborne-Lanthier and Lichtenberger which were apparently generated using a variety of cathode ray television sets and VHS units; the results will please anyone with a keen interest in the aforementioned Raster-Noton or Sahko. Complementing the original music, a mighty line up of Low Jack, Rabit and Gabor Lazer provide B-side remixes - all are as steadfastly experimental as the source material with Rabit's take on "4% (Maurice)" teetering deliciously on the brink of collapse.
