Drifting Back (6:39)
Houston We Have A Problem (7:26)
Juxtapose (6:41)
Review: ** BIG REPRESS ** After two auspicious releases on the Swedish label Aniara Recordings, production duo Genius Of Time step up to Clone's Royal Oak series, previously graced by the likes of Space Dimension Controller, Reggie Dokes and Gerd. Taking this esteemed company into account, we don't take it lightly when we say this record is as good as anything we've heard in the Royal Oak series, with A Side offering "Drifting Back" a jazzy house delight with softly pumping chords making for a jam that wouldn't seem out of place in the KDJ back cat. It's the two flipside offerings, however, that contain the real heat. "Houston We Have A Problem" combines calming synths, vocal moans and rolling percussion to breathtaking effect, while "Juxtapose" could almost be David Kennedy in house mode such is the tough, raw drum programming, but Genius Of Time add some softly soaring strings, thus imbuing the track with a nice classicist bent. An excellent release that comes with a free download code to keep all you mp3 bandits happy.

Lurar I Skuggan (6:13)
Review: Genius Of Time is a long standing partnership between Dorisburg and Arkajo that has yielded a stream of essential deep house releases reaching back to 2010. After recently returning with the Secret Tapes 12" for Verktyg, they're now shoring up on Aniara for the first time in six years with a four-tracker that reminds us why they're held in such high regard as a production partnership. 'CS70 House' is an infectious, uplifting joint with the titular synth enjoying pride of place at the front of the mix, while 'Stream' offers a deep and dubby excursion for those subtler moments in the mix. '909 Day' is a warm and moody affair with a punchy bassline you could sink your teeth into, and 'Lurar I Skuggan' heads into crunchier techno territory without losing that relaxed flavour that the duo are known for.

Minimal/Tech House
Track 1 (6:35)
Track 2 (7:40)
Review: Swedish talents Genius of Time are back on Aniara Recordings sublabel Verktyg with more of their one-take live jams. There are two of them on this 12" and the first is a dusty odyssey where house and techno meet. The groove is delightfully fluid, with dubby bass and coarse hits all topped off with sustained chords that bring the soulful hook. 'Track 2' on the flip is a little less heads down and locked in - it's more airy, with a lighter synth lead and magnificently well-swung drums that are rubbery and full of air. Both cuts are stylish and stripped-back sounds that brim with infectious charm.

Sunswell (8:20)
Taurindo Shuffle (6:14)
Purple Motus (8:48)
Review: Astonishingly, 11 years have now passed since Genius of Time (AKA Swedish duo Alexander Berg and Nils Krogh) broke through with their second single, the now revered 'Drifting Back' on Clone offshoot Royal Oak. While their output has been sporadic since, the pair continue to deliver occasional collections of quality deep house like this one on Oath, which marks their return to action after three years. Title track 'Sunswell' more than ives up to its title, with yearning electric piano motifs and sustained, starry chords riding a breakbeat-house beat and a toasty, warming bassline. 'Taurindo Shuffle' is a driving, organ-rich tribute to classic US deep house with a sub-heavy electro twist, while 'Purple Motus' is a colourful, rubbery and sun-soaked slab of retro-futurist deep house loveliness.

Peace Bird (8:37)
Smiling Into Eternity (6:45)
Rymd01 (6:20)
Review: The Swedish deep house duo of Alexander Berg (Dorisburg) and Nils Krogh (Arkajo) aka Genius Of Time are back outside of their established Aniara imprint for the second time on Running Back since 2014's Juno Jam EP. It has been a long time between drinks, with Krogh pursuing some great solo stuff as Arkajo and Berg performing in Sebastian Mullaert's Circle Of Live. This terrific new EP features the bittersweet "Peace Bird" that follows through with warm Rhodes keys, woody percussion and an all-round lo-slung swagger. The spacey and understated "Smiling Into Eternity" follows through on the B side, followed by the reduced and emotive disco of "Rymd01". Great stuff once again by the Gothenburg-based duo.

Voxshot (5:45)
Netscape (6:14)
Review: Despite boasting a discography packed to the rafters with high-grade deep house treats, Genius of Time (AKA producers Alexander Berg and Nils Krogh) has struggled to hit the dizzying heights of their 2011 Drifting Back EP on Clone offshoot Royal Oak, which included the much-played "Houston We Have a Problem". This latest 12", though, feels like it may become just as celebrated. A-side "Voxshot" is a proper late night, peak-time treat - a warehouse-friendly throb-job built around cut-up vocal samples, choppy, rave-era house riffs, bold sub-bass and bustling, broken house drums. Flip for "Netscape", a crafty combination of lopped deep house synth-sax, rising melody motifs and '89 Chicago house grooves.

Kepler 186f (8:12)
Tau Ceti (6:56)
Review: Over the last couple of years, both members of Genius of Time have been firmly focused on their solo careers. Here, they join forces for the first time since 2014, serving up a fine two-tracker on their Aniara Recordings label. "Kepler 186f" is a pleasingly stargazing affair, with spacey chords, Detroit techno style melodies and occasional acid flashes bubbling away over a rolling, analogue sounding deep house groove. On the flip, they deliver a more robust, tribal influenced groove, peppering these humid rhythms with a gurgling bassline, typically European tech-house electronics and chiming melody lines. It's an excellent return to action, all told.

Djungel Jam
Review: Genius Of Time and Running Back seems like such a perfect fit you wonder why the Swedish duo haven't graced Gerd Janson's label before now. It might be because Alexander Berg and Nils Krough aren't exactly the most prolific of duos when it comes to original material with only three EPs to their name since they inaugurated the Aniara project in such sublime fashion back in 2010. Fans of Genius of Time and John Talabot's DJ Kicks mix have added reason to engage in some vociferous rejoicing as the former's sublime offbeat number "Juno Jam" contribution to the latter release is centre stage on this 12". In addition to the A Side bliss of that Berg and Krough slip in two more percussive numbers on the flip which Running Back quite rightly point out would make "Joe Claussell proud".

Tuffa Trummor Med Synt
Tuffa Trummor Med Rost
Review: Aniara lynchpins Genius Of Time have bided their, er time since their Drifting Back release for Clone Oak, soaking up the popularity of the all conquering Whitney riffing ''Houston, We Have A Problem'' from it with some profile making remix commissions. They return with the Tuffa Trummor12" which fans of their previous Aniara output will revel in thanks to the trademark sumptuous attention to texture, rhythm and detail. Lead track "Tuffa Trummor Med Synt" hints at an appreciation of New Jersey house via the deft percussive swing, the way the liquefied groove fluctuates with intensity and energy in sync with that gently burning analogue bassline is a Genius Of Time hallmark. Complementing this "Tuffa Trummor Med Rost" takes a tougher, more broken attitude to rhythmic concerns, bumping out in a fashion you'd imagine would get nods of approval from the Hessle Audio crew.

Tight Genes
Review: For many people, their first exposure to Genius of Time was the 2011 Whitney sampling Clone classic Houston, We Have A Problem yet the Swedish pair had already scored two excellent 12"s for the Aniara label. With both long out of print, Aniara have elected to offer up a timely repress of Same Old Place, the debut Genius Of Time transmission that still sounds remarkably fresh almost four years on. Superbly well crafted, the title track keeps the drums to a minimum to allow those swooping stabs the space to drive proceedings forth, lending "Same Old Place" a sense of the classic without resorting to pastiche. "Tight Genes" demonstrated Alexander Berg and Nils Krogh were equally capable of productions centred around rolling basslines and killer rhythmics. If you missed out first time round, don't make the same mistake now!

Gliese 581g
Science Fiction
Review: Absolutely gorgeous release from the fledgling Swedish imprint Aniara Recordings which sees the return of Genius Of Time with two expertly arranged productions that demand your full attention. "Gliese 581g" might hint at the astrological leanings of Genius Of Love, but what is clear is an innate ability to craft hypnotic, fluid analogue grooves that more than retain your attention despite being entirely instrumental - a criticism of much of what passes between the genre barriers of contemporary disco and deep house releases. Essentially "Gliese 581g" is a gloriously elongated ten minutes of music that gently saunters through different musical movements with nonchalant ease. Naturally the flipside embellishment "Science Fiction" is just as impressive, jetting off on an intergalactic e funk saunter through snapping drums, infectious percussion and laser beams of analogue effects. Kudos too for the entirely far too creepy artwork that adorns this release.
