  2. Daze (feat Simeon Jones) (5:18)
  3. Special Names (5:48)
  4. Morph (6:22)
Review: A classic from start to end - FYI Chris step forward with their finest cuts to date for the homies at RS INTL. Chris Coupe and Chris Watson are back with a feel good EP for the summer. They look to the sounds of New York City's fabled ballroom/vogue scene on the tough bass-heavy bounce of "Contact" (Underground Track) and followed by the evocative deep house of "Daze" featuring Simeon Jones. On the flip, they go deeper and in to even trippier territory on the sensual tribal house of "Special Names" and further down the spiral on the tunnelling and hypnotic "Morph" - which is unlike anything we've heard from the pair before.

  1. Ad (7:52)
  2. Pas (6:58)
Review: More high-grade material from the Rye Wax associated West Friends label. It sees the return to the imprint of Rhythm Section International sort FYI Chris, who first appeared on West Friends 12 months ago. As usual, the two cuts are wonderfully deep, atmospheric and evocative, balancing the needs of the dancefloor with the producer's passion for crafting fluid, saucer-eyed soundscapes. This is arguably best exemplified by the dub house-inspired shuffle of A-side "Ad", which also boasts some thought-provoking spoken word samples. B-side "Pas" may well be the first deep house tune to ever sample the UK government's infamous, Cold War-era "Protect and Survive" public information films. As a result, the track is undeniably creepy despite its obvious dancefloor credentials.

Deep House
  1. Home Alone (6:35)
  2. Oort Cloud (6:01)
  3. House Dog (7:55)
  4. Courtyard (6:00)
Review: Chris Watson and Chris Coupe are a duo from south east London, using music to make music. This would mark their second release for the esteemed London deep house imprint Church, in addition to tracks for other fine tastemakers such as Rhythm Section Intl and Bristol's Banoffee Pies. The Home Alone EP is an impressive and consistent effort. Starting out with the emotive title track, fuelled by dusty rhythms, soulful tones and some smooth sax for good measure. Next track "Oort Cloud picks up the pace in style with more energy and attitude particularly: that bassline and skeletal rhythm department allowing for the flute solo to really shine through. On the flip, it's all about closing track "Courtyard" which is a smokey and slowed down expression in techno, in the vein of L.I.E.S. but without the all the punk attitude, instead going for an evocative feeling: one chugging steam train of a groove!

  1. Captains Patilla (4:38)
  2. Dance Bebey (4:56)
  3. Silk (4:59)
Review: The second 12" on the Rye Wax associated West Friends label comes from shop regular and occasional Rhythm Section International sort FYI Chris. In keeping with the imprint's desire to "fill your bags with the strangest pingers", Spirit Animal is arguably the producer's most interesting and diverse release to date. While the deep and woozy vibe of his deep house productions is evident throughout, this is variously blended with tropical dub disco (low-slung opener "Captain's Patilla"), the sticky, feverish pulse of Ghanaian percussion (Afro-house shuffler "Dance Bebey") and, on standout closer "Silk", both Idjut Boys style late night dubbiness and swirling, off-kilter sample-house.

Deep House
  1. Russian Woodpecker (6:09)
  2. Repeater (5:41)
  3. How To Ruin The World (5:16)
  4. Lone Star (6:02)
Review: Following well-regarded outings on Banoffee Pies and Linoli Industries, FYI Chris returns to the loving arms of Rhythm Section International, and its 'Executive Producer' Bradley Zero. He's in fine form, too, delivering a quartet of tracks that largely steer clear of predictable deep house tropes. Check, for example, the curious - but rather good - "Russian Woodpecker", where spacey synth hits and Scanner style mobile field recordings join forces with a jumpy bassline and off-kilter rhuthm track. The loose and dreamy "Repeater" adds a little dub-wise flavour to a loose and lo-fi, MPC head's take on dream house, while "How To Ruin The World" is an undeniably melancholic journey that's as melodious as it as lo-fi. Closer "Lone Star", meanwhile, is a stripped back groove joint of the highest calibre.

  1. Secret Bullshit (5:24)
  2. For Now (5:35)
  3. Xenomorph (4:24)
  4. Taking The F Train (4:50)
Review: The grandly-named Edinburgh party crew Lionoil Industries added record label ownership to their collective CVs early last year, and they've been testing the waters of all they can do with the concept. First up was a physical mixtape featuring primordial pulsations from Yves and a mobilised suite of weaponised tracks from Lionoil crew dem Percy Main and DJ Yves. At the turn of the year a split 12" arrived featuring Hi + Saberhagen and Percy among others and this third release is Lionoil's first full artist 12". South is the direction they look, seeking out the refined Peckham production unit FYI Chris, who have impressed with turns on Church, Rhythm Section and Banoffee Pies among others. Of the four tracks on the Lionoil EP, Chris and Chris particularly impress with the sample-laden snap and tickle of "Four Now," a house cut that is equal parts playful and downright rude.

  1. Back In The Millenium (6:40)
  2. Jeru (3:40)
  3. Need I Say More (5:48)
  4. Dedication (5:42)
Review: The last Rhythm Section release came from Vancouver man Local Artist, but number 6 sees Peckham man Bradley Zero actually looking to local artists in the shape of FYI Chris. The production handle of Chris Watson and his namesake Coupe, this Peckham duo have already impressed with the No Hurry stealth drop on Church late last year, but it's clear they've learnt a few new tricks since then. Nestling snugly into the SE London beatdown sound Bradley has been cultivating through the label, Back In The Millenium is pleasantly hard to pin down with bits of house, hip hop and acid thrown into the mixer. We are quite impressed by "Jeru" which desiccates a famed '90s Primo sample with some dextrous MPC work, whilst MCDE fans will be all over "Need I Say More". A big 12" Nik!

Cat: CHURCHW 002. Rel: 11 Dec 14
Deep House
  1. No Hurry
  2. Juliette
Review: The Church White series returns with a second offering and it's a local affair with Rye Wax man FYI Chris bringing some contemporary UK house heat with two fully flavoured cuts. Previously known as one half of Nandos obsessed production unit Piri Piri, FYI Chris is no less potent on the buttons when he's flying solo on the evidence here with "No Hurry" hinting at a similar dusty fingered grasp of house music's inner workings to Mr Dez Andres. Flip the hand stamped 10" and "Juliete" is a more explicitly UK affair thanks to its tumbling percussive swing, percolating synths and expertly diced and layered vocals and it's entirely the kind of thing you expect on Church.

  1. K15 - "Rain Meditation"
  2. Lismore - "Biffa"
  3. FYI Chris - "Sugar"
  4. Ben Houghton - "Market House"
Review: Long celebrated as a hub for new producers to showcase their talents, CDR return to the releasing game in partnership with Dimensions Festival. Up and coming house heads K15 and FYI Chris reportedly invited Lismore and Ben Houghton to take part in this collaborative release, resulting in four tracks that wouldn't sound out of place soundtracking a balmy afternoon dance on the Adriatic Sea. Oozing quality and soul throughout, there's a distinctly laid back flavour to the house on offer across this release, although FYI Chris add a touch more bite with their grubby lo-fi synth lines on "Sugar".

  3. FYI Chris - "SWH (No Boundaries)" (6:53)
  4. Luke Vibert - "That's Ill Folks" (3:37)
  5. Clark - "Laptop Stand" (3:21)
Review: Plenty of big hitters feature on this new various artists collection from Care4Life. It's a Harvey edit of Kiwi that kicks off with a slow, darkened grubby dub disco workout then Apiento & Tepper link for "Blossoms", another deep and dubby cut but with thoughtful pads and icy electro twinges. FYI Chris ups the ante with a warm and atmospheric house cut that carries you away on a spaced out vibe and Luke Vibert gets typically wonky and electric on his playful downbeat jam "That's Ill Folks." The biggest curveball of the lot is Clark's "Laptop Stand", an acoustic guitar piece with a curious folk vocal.

  3. Apes - "Vanilla Ice" (5:36)
  4. FYI Chris - "Happy Edward" (6:03)
Review: London's Church expand operations with a new offshoot called Church Volumes. They kick things off with an all-star EP featuring "friends from Vancouver, Peckham and L.A". 1080p regulars Project Pablo continue their fine run of form with the brilliant "Hiber Nation", a dreamy chunk of melodious, synth-heavy deep house that's as fluid and blissful as it is warm and evocative. Darnum Stamp's "Them 2" explores similar territory, with delay-laden beats and early Pal Joey style synthesizers adding to the groovy, new age house mood, while Apes' "Vanilla Ice" is the kind of glacial deep house workout that should send shivers down the spines' of saucer-eyed dancers. FYI Chris takes a different approach on his contribution, "Happy Edward", with sparse but ear-pleasing synth lines bubbling atop a hazy, bass-heavy rhythm.
