Bad Trip
Strange Gait
Review: A unique theme is central to this fourth release from the intermittently active Smorgasbord label and one you feel may unlimited potential to be explored through other contributing artists. In plain terms, the label tasked Bass Clef and Frak to swap unfinished stem files for tracks without any further input from the other. Lead cut "Bad Trip" seems to Bass Clef's take on Frak's stems, and features perhaps the debut appearance of Ralph Cumbers' own vocals amidst some wonderfully skewed electronics that never sit still for a second. On the flip Frak draw from the same pool of creativity that has spurred recent muscular techno excursions on Kontra, Tsar et al with their mutation of "Strange Gait".

Micro Fission (7:12)
Arcitect (6:34)
Review: Original Swedish techno freaks Frak are back with their characteristically raw and weird sound on Ternary Fission, which lands on the excellent Gothenburg label Hoga Nord. "Corridor" sees the crew in thumping, progressive mode, while "Stetoskop" shows off their more wobbly, psychedelic side. "Micro Fission" is actually quite a detailed and dynamic groove in the Frak canon, coolly flirting between spannered electro, slick disco and wobbly acid and making it work beautifully. "Arcitect" swerves once more for the gutter with ample edgy synths sludging towards a murky end point - something Frak can steer so very well indeed.

Review: Swedish outliers Frak have been on rampant form recently, channelling their 30-plus years of machine battering into material that stands up to demands of the contemporary scene with ease. "Starter Pack" is a muscular workout with a choice selection of gnarly synth lines, while "Congestion" has some wiggly filter sweeping and the off-kilter acid freakery you'd expect from the Scandinavian techno heroes. "Bruhn Agitation" takes things slower and meaner, leading you into a dungeon of deviant techno delights. Totally workable and yet still undeniably different, Frak continue to be a treasure for those who like their machine music rugged and raw.

Lane Escape (6:03)
Protes (7:55)
Long Fork (7:42)
Large Function (5:43)
Review: Sweden's legendary Frak duo must surely be some of the most productive producers of the last 25 years. The two steely tech-heads have released nothing but bangers since their first cassettes on the equally mythical Borft Records, and they haven't changed a drum machine beat since! Never stopping to believe in their vision of techno, they have had a resurgence of sorts over the last five years, a resurrection which has now landed them on DJ Haus' unstoppable Unknown To The Unknown stable. The four tax are classic Frak business, kicking off with the gently acid-laden tone of "Lane Escape", before dissolving into the more electro-minded swing of the similarly metallic "Protes". On the flip, "Long Fork" bangs away like a hammer, thrashing out its detuned bass like it's '93, whereas "Large Function" is all about the beat rattle, swinging and meandering with the typical Frak sway. Excellent party bumpers.

Span Clarity (8:26)
Cromos Fraction (7:05)
Imagined Rash (6:18)
Review: Legendary techno and electro duo Frak jump up on Madrid's newest label, the enigmatically named Femur. This is great news for us - and you - because we still believe that these two make just about the best, and rawest, dance music available over the shop counter, and we're endlessly fascinated by their altruistic take on the perennially pleasing 4/4 formula. In fact, it would be fair to say that "Span Clarity" spreads much further than the inevitable four-to-the-floor, and we're faced with a classic slice of rolling Frak-funk, driven by harsh snare drums and wonky analogue melodies. The B-side kicks off the moodier, more menacing hooks and bass stabs of the Detroitian "Cromos Faction", a killer of a tune that melts effortlessly into the bleeps and gargles of the utterly nutty groove named "Imagined Rash". Rough, effective and bound to destroy the floor...

Review: Swedish techno-punk pranksters Frak have been at it since 1987 and still going strong as staples of the notorious Borft imprint. Jackmaster's Ultimate Hits label scores this crucial double pack from Frak which sees the trio throw down some gnarly and snarling acid jams. The grinding and tunnelling "Travel" is the kind of jam you'd hear rocking the Golden Pudel at peak time on a Friday night. "No Adventure" is some nice boompty acid for good measure while "Peace Ticket, Return" is some gutsy proper acid nastiness for even better results. The short two minute interludes throughout the album of improvised modular magic are fascinating, as is the emotive deep house journey "Bus To Abyss" which was quite a surprising highlight.

First Glimt I Ogat (6:41)
Review: Dark Entries are simply a good record label, enough said. However, we will give you a touch of context on this latest killer, a four-tracker by the mythical Frak trio, still wearing their aluminium hats after twenty years of head-banging. "Sudden Haircut" has been recorded exclusively for the label, and it's a delicious techno lick with a crescendo of XOXBOX acid, while both "Synthfrilla" and "Synthgok" were recorded in 2010, and have previously appeared on the much coveted Sex Tags Mania label out of Bergen, Norway - both essential bangers. The finale is in the shape of "First Glimt I Ogat", another of Frak's classic drum-led house weavers that works both on its own and mixed into just about anything. Recommended gear - be quick!

Radiant Dominance (7:29)
Southern East Light (4:27)
Lance Stroboscopes (7:25)
Flashrock (4:29)
Review: We're big fans of Zurich imprint Lux Rec at Juno HQ; dark and dirty modern techno with a pinch of electro aesthetic and that's always a good recipe. We are equally big on veteran Swedish tape manglers Frak whose activities on their own Borft label dates back to the 1980s!! A unison between Frak and Lux Rec is likely to light our fires! And Primitive Drums does that and more! The pounding groove on opener "Radiant Dominance" gets things off on a good start with its resonance that builds to a near acid moment. On the flip "Lance Stroboscopes" has low toms that beat you into submission alongside a grinding melody that builds and builds and "Flashrock" is a cheeky downbeat groove that's just perfect to use as that closing track you've always been looking for.

Nerve Netting (9:44)
Progressive Latitude (7:29)
Major Attack (7:23)
Review: Frak must be amongst the most consistent artists in techno. Some 26 years after launching their Borft Records imprint, they're still churning out bizarre 12" exercises in grotty Scandinavian techno, with very little sign of their notoriously high quality threshold slipping. Realismo delivers three more winding, twisting analogue treats, kicking off with ten-minutes of mid tempo, acid-flecked, heads-down freakery (the brilliantly icy, but also strangely intense "Nerve Netting"). "Progressive Lattitude" is a little fuzzier and more distorted, but explores similar sonic territory. Things get more hectic on closer "Major Attack", which is a typically wild interpretation of acid house with additional razor-sharp electronics.

Drumcome True
Review: Veteran Swedish hardware (experi)mentalists Frak have enjoyed something of a renaissance in recent years, upping their productivity following a relatively fallow period in the mid 2000s (given that their history stretches back to the mid 1980s, that's hardly surprising). This 12" for Tsar features a quartet of moody analogue jams in their trademark style, including some killer dancefloor material. The real floor-slayer is probably the acid-and-bleeps hypno-chugger "Twinhead", though the slow acid throb of "Lightpeople" isn't far behind. The EP's two most striking moments, though, are the slow house hum of "This Is Lance" and "Drumcometrue", a sparse but bubbling fusion of shuffling rhythms and tumbling, acid-flecked electronics.

Machines Drifting Away
To Find A Way Home
Review: Whilst not quite appearing at the same dizzying rate of last year, it's still quite difficult to keep a hold on all the material that surfaces with the discernible sonic stamp of veteran Scandinavian scamps Frak. Aside from their own Borft Records, Kontra Music has been a steady outlet for Frak material for the past two years and Fusion In Park is a welcome addition to the Malmo label's output thus far this year, providing something different to Rivet's Bear Bile EP and the minimal collaboration between Porn Sword Tobacco and SUED and Acido Records man SVN. For their part, Kontra mischievously describe Frak as "the Swedish House Mafia for people who actually know what house music is", and this 12" offers two distinctly different sides to Jan Svensson and co's production palette. "Machines Drifting Away" merges stinging EBM and 303 basslines with jacking drums, deep house chords and other swathes of synths, while "To Find A Way Home" is a bumping techno track pumped full of filters and flange and their trademark Swedish machine-funk that at one point sounds like Frak covering the Wooly classic "Erotic Discourse".

Absorb
Instant Transport
Review: The Dutch have their fair share of iconic labels in Clone, Creme, Rush Hour and Bunker but it's great to see new labels popping up and doing their own thing. The Rotterdam-based Midlight Records is one such new operation, launching last year with a must grip 12" from newcomer that featured an excellent DJ Sotofett remix. Midlight's second release looks to be just as enticing, pulling two cuts from the ever productive production pool of Swedish miscreants FRAK for the Saturate You 12". The Frak sound is well established by now, heck they've had three decades to refine it, but that doesn't mean "Absorb" or "Instant Transport" sound tired in any way. Much like a Legowelt or Omar S 12", these two extended stripped down jams sound resolutely Frak in their execution and will cause optimum dancefloor damage in the correct hands.

Phase Conclution
Review: Jan Svensson's recent debut on Biorhythm with a double pack of functional yet deadly productions under his rarely used Villa Abo guise was a big hit in the Juno office, but those out there fiending for some new material from the Borft under the much loved Frak guise will be pleased at the sight of Ultrasaw. This being Frak and this being Borft, the six track Ultrasaw cocks a snoot at convention by including the rare sight of a Frak remix, with Dave ID's record label presumably not happy with how the INXS style cock rock of "Soul Reprise" was given a deep throttle by Frak. We know which version we prefer! The rest is equally as good, with the gloopy primitive electronics of "Storming Vermona Europa" a particular highlight.

Sweet Twister
Review: iDEAL Recordings Joachim Nordwall revisits his youth and offers up a timely chance to acquaint yourself with Frak's deranged early '90s acid phase on this reissue of Alice In Acidland. Originally released as a limited LP and cassette in 1993, Alice In Acidland came with Frak five years into a prolific recording career, and saw them fully caught up in the high octane, breakbeat driven euphoria of acid techno rave, though it's sound is still very much grounded in the idiosyncrasies that make up a Frak release. As a founder of the Borft label along with Jan Zwarre Svensson, Nordwall is well-versed on the early days of Frak, and recent adoptees of the Swedish troupe should not pass up the chance to terrorise their senses with this four track reissue!

Review: The Matador EP sees Frak returning for a fifth White label release on the excellent Kontra Music label. Although this record struggles to capture the pure mania of a Frak live performance, which involves green jackets, tinfoil masks and a table full of vintage hardware, it is, like their other Kontra white labels, filled with skewed analogue techno. Both "Raw Space" and "Kom Deluxe" display the trio's ability to constructing thick, mid-tempo acid tracks filled with dub textures while the furious bassline and manic melody of "Fragmentus" and maddening three note structure of "Acid Colour" show them at their most unhinged.

Chrome
Review: The mysterious Swedish Frak collective maintain their 100 per cent appearance record on the fledgling and eminently collectible Kontra White Label series with this killer plate! Kontra describe lead track "Wobbler" as Frak leaving "Karlskrona for a short visit to Omar-S' Detroit" and it does have that raw FXHE charm to it, no pretence to anything more than a track perfectly suited to late nights in a warehouse, basement or house party. It's little more than a booming kick drum, a nonchalant sounding synth stab and a jagged, modulating acid line traversing the scales with burning menace, and it's the confidence with which dramatic shifts occur that sets Frak apart. Those Frak heads wanting something a bit more in line with their excellently weird Muzika Electronic LP for Digitalis earlier this year will relish the B Side. "Chrome" is a gaseous exercise in droning analogue freeform funk that practically crawls out of the speakers like one of those creepy spirits in Japanese horror films.

Track 4 (DJ Sotofett remix)
Review: Frak continue their charmingly idiosyncratic assault on our techno affections with this killer induction into the Sex Tags operation - a label some would argue is directly influenced by the mysterious denizens that operate under the Frak name. Paying homage to the imprint upon which so many Frak releases have flied under the radar of wider appreciation, the Borft EP brandishes three supreme cuts of electro leaning acid techno that allude to no higher design than perfectly fitting the sweatiest moments of your desired club land experience. The deliciously rugged third track is a particular vintage Sex Tags tool and there is the added bonuses of a particularly smudgy remix from DJ Sotofett which is executed in a manner that's almost heavenly.

Peel MD - "Calavera"
Frak - "Sync Rebate"
Review: Midlight's releases may be relatively sparse, but they're rarely less than excellent. Their most recent 12", a double A-side featuring sublime cuts fron Duplex and Tuff Sherm, was particularly potent. Here, they wander off in a more robust direction, delivering a pair of twisted, acid-flecked rubs that should please all those who like their house music rough and dystopian. Rarely spotted Swede Peel MD kicks things off with "Calavera", a pulsating fusion of rolling analogue percussion, warped electronics and heavyweight 303 abuse. Frak surprisingly calm things down a touch on "Rebate", dipping the tempo for a hypnotic trip through deep-but-sparse acid house territory. It lacks the immediacy of Peel MD's A-side, but is arguably more satisfying.

Whilst Kontra Musik is the more established of the two, both labels have followed a similar path, releasing music from hometown talent as well as artists further afield. The debut issue sees contributions from Skudge themselves along with MRSK, Frak and the ever reliable Andreas Tilliander in TM404 mode; proceedings are deftly split between Swedish techno at it's finest on the A Side courtesy of Skudge and MRSK whilst Frak and TM404 ensure the B Side is a more cerebral affair.
