Regressions (5:19)
Unknown Form (6:08)
Cronus (5:26)
Radiant Matter (5:30)
Review: Strap in and hold on tight for this one as Exum is hell bent on twisting your melon and rewiring your brain with the opening tune on his Regressions EP for the Italian folks at Void+1 Recordings. 'Regressions' is a whirring and malfunctioning factory in meltdown. The robots have taken over and they can't cope as the pummelling techno drums barrel on. 'Unknown Form' is a prickly and kinetic but blunted techno rhythm that rocks back and forth with coarse metallic textures for company. 'Cronus' is a fizzing and spitting future techno cut from another place of industry long lost to automation and 'Radiant Matter' cuts loose on thumping drum patterns and writhing synth lines. Woof.

Surface Erosion EP
Cat: MORD 080. Rel: 22 Oct 21

Techno
Erosion 1 (5:20)
Erosion 2 (5:35)
Erosion 3 (5:37)
Erosion 4 (5:27)
Review: Strap in, because there is mucking about on the 80th EP from Mord. The ever popular, ever excellent Exum is at the helm and is a fine artist to enlist given his proven track record dating back years. The Spanish producer never fails to cook up fresh sounds while drying on a classic techno template and that is the case here. 'Erosion 1' is a screw-face banger with stomping drums and twisted acid. 'Erosion 2' is all about the jostling, bulky, macho drum programming which forces you to move and 'Erosion 3' rocks back and forth on a drum loop that will turn your mind inside out. Lastly, 'Erosion 4' gets all freaky with the edgy synths that light up the mix like a laser gun.

True Force (6:06)
Arkheom (5:06)
Mass Control (5:40)
Monolith (5:07)
Review: The Detroit Underground label has truly seen a revival as of late, but it's a good thing they have because they're fast-becoming one of the hottest labels on our shelves. Although they've been going string since the late '90s, they've moulded their sound into more contemporary shades thanks to the help of artists such as Kyle Hall and Kero. For their latest release they've chosen Spanish techno veteran Exium to deliver four abrasive, acid-laced dancefloor numbers. From "True Force" to "Monolith", the mood is gloomy but the sounds are warm and straight out of the mothership, the whole EP sounds like being in the underbelly of a power station in a desolate industrial area. Lovely.

Rotating Frames EP
Cat: POLEGROUP 032. Rel: 16 Jun 15

Techno
Monopoles (5:48)
Magnetic Flux (5:53)
Rotating Frames (5:33)
Early Life (5:42)
Review: Exium continues his strong run of releases. As this four-tracker so ably demonstrates, what's really impressive about the Spanish producer is his ability to integrate existing tropes with his own sound. On "Monopoles", this approach sees him fuse a Function-style linear pulse with a repetitive vocal sample, while "Magnetic Flux" goes further and deeper into this direction, a dank, tunneling rhythm led by tonal bleeps and blips. On the title track, he changes direction again, with the kind of drones that one would associate with Hospital Productions fused with shaking percussion, while "Early Life" brings the release to a close to the sound of Mills-inspired, panel-beating drums.

Human Element EP
Cat: MORD 017. Rel: 30 Apr 15

Techno
Unipolar (5:29)
Inner Core (5:27)
Shock Waves (5:31)
Human Element (5:03)
Review: Since first pricking the consciousness of the international techno community with their 2001 debut 12" Zet Oviedo, Exium has become a reliable source of solid, often fiendishly dark dancefloor material. Here they add another label to their bulging discography via a debut on the similarly impressive Mord. There are few surprises, of course, but plenty of robust, thrusting floor-fillers. It's all of a reliably high standard, but we're particularly enjoying opener "Unipolar" - a maudlin chunk of throbbing darkroom funk complete with a nagging, rave-inspired riff - and the deeper, impressively trippy hypnotism of "Shock Waves". That said, the alien, acid-tinged closer "Human Element", may well be the best of the lot.

The 12th Planet
Review: Exium continue to strengthen their working relationship with Pole Recordings, gracing Oscar Mulero's label with A Sensible Alternative To Emotion, their second studio album. Having spent over a decade refining their own vision of hard edged techno, Exium use this platform of a second album to expand on their established sound, at times easing down the tempos and intensity for a more balanced listen across the 10 tracks. Productions such as the granite heavy "Massless Particle" or tunnelling abstraction of "Absolute Magnitude" demonstrate this is no drastic departure from the Exium sound but there's an equal consideration for melodic arrangements and more subdued moments.

Review: This dynamic Spanish outfit unleash a proper terror of an EP for those after a rough, no-nonsense techno sound. Led by the steaming industrial strength beats and machine-edged sounds of the title track, this 4 tracker combines spatial, dark and deranged sounds with relentless pounding rhythms ideal for fans of British Murder Boys and Oscar Mulero.

Rejection Of Influence (6:37)
Light Waves (5:02)
Review: Nheoma is a true bastion of Spanish techno, established in 2004 by the Exium partnership of Valentin Corujo and Hector Sandoval and largely focused on their own work and collaborations. On this latest record they pick up where their last record left off, teaming up with another formidable duo in Bruno Di Berardino and Bruno Ruggieri, aka Dynamic Forces. 'Rejection Of Influence' takes over the whole A side in a trademark roll of booming, side chained low end and nerve-shredding high frequency interference, plotting a course straight to the peak of the night. 'Light Waves' meanwhile toys with some mind-snagging synthesis which forms the centrifugal point for the thunderous rhythm section to maraud around.

The Modern Predator (5:00)
Review: This is the kind of techno that likes to perforate and puncture your eardrums, allowing its inter-kick crud to grip your temples and slosh around maddeningly. It's an impressive feat from Nheoma to be able to secure this sound so consistently; this all-Italian collab from Exium and the duo Dynamic Forces is nonetheless melodic, recalling the playful industriality of old-school Bandulu or Birmingham stuff. Brutal and electrifying.

Exium - "Diverse Population"
Exium - "Pulstar"
Developer - "Promiscuous"
Developer - "Indigenous"
Review: With every release Spanish duo Exium do it's like they grow an extra muscle, and at the moment they're starting to look like a well conditioned iron man. This split release with fellow booming techno cohort Developer sees the duo, on their side of the EP, deliver a stripped and sinisterly grubby "Diverse Population", while "Pulstar" sounds like a reserved and dubbed-out Sandwell District production. On the Developer-side the American provides a drivelling up-and-down arpeggio in "Promiscuous", while there's only two words that can really explain "Indigenous" properly: Developer techno.
