Review: Donato Dozzy has long been one of techno's most inventive and singularly minded talents. Even so, this latest full-length - his first since 2013 - is pretty conceptual. There's something more than a little Matthew Herbert-esque about Dozzy's desire to create an entire album out of the near operatic vocals of Rome-based singer Anna Caragnano. Using nothing but her voice - harmonies, solos, grunts, whispers, speech and dreamy freestyle passages - and a swathe of sound effects, Dozzy creates a rich, evocative, often spine-tingling range of largely ambient, otherworldly tracks. There are occasional rhythmic passages, of course - see "Festa (A Mattola)" in particular - but for the most part the Italian producer concentrates on textures and atmospheres. The results are rarely less than beguiling.

Review: Donato Dozzy's previous album, Sintetizzatrice, made beautiful, avant-garde music out of chopped-up and manipulated vocals. For The Loud Silence, he's attempted to do similar with the "marranzano", better known as the humble mouth harp or Jew's Harp. The instrument's distinctive twang can be heard throughout the album, providing inspiration for trippy, droning ambience ("Personal Rock"), glitchy electronica ("The Net"), abstract techno ("Downhill To The Sea", whose industrial influences are obvious), and triumphant, post-Orbital soundtrack electronica (closer "Exit The Acropolis", which is nothing less than superb). Of course, there are musty textures and off-kilter electronic textures throughout, too, but it's the alien-sounding mouth harp the draws Dozzy's disparate strands together.

  1. Slow Train (part 1) (17:42)
  2. Slow Train (part 2) (19:22)
Review: It would be fair to say that Donato Dozzy's contribution to the "One Instrument Sessions" series is something of a psychedelic, brain-melting affair. Running to 38 minutes in two side-long parts, "Slow Train" is the result of a one-night encounter the Italian had with an EMS Synthi AKS - a rare, valuable, portable modular synthesizer that would now set you back well over L15,000. Musically the piece is wonderfully atmospheric, fluid and trippy, moving between slowly shifting electronic movements, starburst sounds and becalmed ambient chords. It was recorded as live in one go, with all the sounds you hear the result of real-time manipulation of the Synthi's unique control system, and you really can tell. It's definitely one for vintage synthesizer lovers everywhere to absorb and enjoy.

Techno
  1. Donato Dozzy - "Aquatica" (5:46)
  2. Eric Cloutier - "Ekpyrosis" (6:24)
Review: Eric Cloutier has decided to launch a new offshoot to his consistently impressive Palinoia label. The basic idea seems to be limited edition EPs featuring tried-and-tested club cuts from like-minded machine abusers. To begin this sub-label debut in style, he offers up a killer cut from pal Donato Dozzy that's as hypnotic and mind-altering as you'd expect. Built around a rock solid kick-drum pattern, hissing cymbals and a deep bassline, "Aquatica" is sparse, unearthly and intoxicating, with trippy noises, metallic electronics and watery sounds bubbling across the sound space. Cloutier takes over on side B with "Ekpyrosis", a thrusting, muscular mixture of locked-in grooves, faintly foreboding psychedelic acid motifs and the kind of swelling chords that make your synapses snap.

Techno
  1. 531 Hz
  2. 531 Hz (Kab & Minilogue mix)
Review: Since serving up one of last year's most memorable albums in the self titled LP for Prologue, Voices Of The Lake duo Donato Dozzy and Neel have tread carefully, contributing only a track to Mike Parker's Geophone series. They adopt a similar method with this release for Concrete that sees them drop one production which is complemented by a flipside remix. Very much remaining in the techno netherworld, "531 Hz" is a ranging cut made epic by a vast space opening up in the top register, with a synth that reaches skywards in a kind of desert-based incantation that's as uplifting as it is beguiling. Kab and Minilogue combine for the remix that switches up the ethnic mood for a far more machine-driven ride through aquatic tones and melodies; a veritable oasis of a foil to the dusty A-side.
