Parasite (6:27)
Tree In Space (4:09)
Unbelief (6:25)
Meltdown (4:18)
Review: You can't get more reliable than Ed DMX frankly. The veteran artist can do all electro styles imaginable and all with equal elan. This month, for example, is dropping a disco and boogie fried 12" as well as this more classically inclined electro outing on the fine Shipwrec label out of the Netherlands. 'Parasite' has a perfectly elastic and rubbery baseline under celestial melodies, 'Tree In Space' is a twitchy rhythm and 'Unbelief' then settles into a deeper groove with smeared synth chords. 'Meltdown' ends with a darker and more atmospheric sound for the late night hours.

Review: From Permanent vacation to Hypercolour, Furthur Electronix to Under The Radar, Ed DMX's music pops up all over the place these days. That's primarily because the electro hit machine just can't stop producing pure gold from his gear, and this latest joint on Peggy Gou's Gudu label proves the point - his second for the label after 2019's Don't You Wanna Play? EP. From the jubilant vintage techno sound of the title track to the cheeky 90s house bounce of 'Altered Chords', 'U Ain't Really Down's wild-eyed jack to the joyous machine soul of out and out tribute tracks 'I Love Juan', this is DMX Krew laying some major influences bare and making magic out of his pure passion.

Clean The Stylus (Ashley Break) (4:07)
Review: The next electro exploration from the infamous DMX Krew comes in the form of 'Blue Bob', which scours the genre's less bangerific backwaters. The four tracks on this new EP her for Further Electronix centre on everything from the weezy, to the gaseous, to the strange. 'Ambient Freak' does what it says on the tin, working as one of Krew's most minimal cuts to date; its noir synth strings and piquey melodic motifs sound like the soundtrack to a space-age murder mystery, as we try to decipher who killed Zog with what; a laser-blaster? a lightsaber? a photon torpedo? 'Clean The Stylus' and are 'Blue Blob' further sci-fi pleasantries, with icy blue notes and propulsive FM basses gluing it all together.

Review: We'll never have too much of Ed Upton's slick electro fare, and he's on especially funky form on this new DMX Krew drop for Magnetron. 'Seriously' is a boogie-informed joint with all the sweet and sexy synth licks you would expect, piling the squelchy Moog lines on heavy and aiming squarely at the hips. 'Weird One' nudges some of those boogie motifs towards a curious amalgam somewhere between braindance and synth-pop - that might sound like a funny crossover but it sounds wholly natural. 'Shut Up' is more explicitly leaning towards a freaky proto house sound, while 'Back Again' switches stance for some sneaky electro fare. Quite simply, every track is a masterclass, but then what else would you expect from the mighty DMX?

Review: Ed Upton's DMX Krew output as always been heavily rooted in electro, but he's not averse to turning his hand to vintage-sounding synth-funk and electropop when the mood takes him. It's that mode the Bedford-born producer is in on Party Life, his second album for long-serving Munich stable Permanent Vacation. Featuring his own spoken and sung vocals, pleasingly authentic '80s-sounding synths and bubbly basslines throughout, Party Life very much lives up to its title, delivering a swathe of catchy, ear-pleasing cuts that are more fun than, well, something extremely fun. Highlights include bubbly P-funk pop number 'Show Me', revivalist new jack swing number 'Anything' and wonderfully electrofunk jam 'Party Life', which is also presented in a deliciously delay-laden 'Dub' mix mode at the end of side two.

Review: Over the years, Ed Upton has released an insanely large volume of records as DMX Krew, though his quality level as rarely dipped below "brilliant". While many of these EPs and albums explore his love of electro, he's not averse to exploring sci-fi techno, jacking house and throbbing Italo-disco. 'Unhooked', the track that opens his first 12" of 2022, is deliciously dark and creepy, sitting somewhere between the lo-fi techno of L.I.E.S, the acid-fired rave-era insanity of Aphex Twin and bittersweet dancefloor melancholia. Elsewhere, he peppers a crispy breakbeat with ghostly chords and bubbly lead lines on 'Orange Cat Print', summons the spirit of the apocalypse on doom-laden acid-electro number 'Didgerididnt' and delivers sturdy, mind-mangling electro thrills on 'Dust Devil'.

Review: By now, long time veteran DMX Krew is very much one of the Hypercolour family. This is the studio magician's fourth album with the UK crew and is another fine feather in his already very resplendent bow. It features all his signature melodies, mechanical beats and expressive sound designs across two super slabs of wax. As usual it is a distinctly hardware heavy sound that results in rich analogue textures throughout. From the sci-fi fun of sludgy opener 'Unconnected' to the broken rhythms of 'Wetware' this is another classic.

Review: Cultivated Electronics klick off their 2021 schedule in fantastic fashion here with a new Ep from the legendary electronic innovator DMX Krew. He has a high rate of release but the quality levels never drop and so it is that this is another vital 12" for lovers of electro funk. It marks his first solo outing on the label and features plenty of his usual sonic wizardry. 'Overseer' ducks and dives through the cosmos on nimble kicks and between shattered melodies, and 'Plashingers' keeps up the pace with a darker, more techno leaning sound. 'Vacuum Surfers' is a pixelated melodic party in the sky and 'Diaspora' allows a little room to breath as it explores slower tempos.

Review: Another week, another killer electro outing from Dmx Krew. This one is a rather surprising one even for an artist who has done as much as Ed Upton, however: it's an EP of Level 42 covers that remoulds the English jazz-funk band as a collection of future funk robots. A real labour of love and a sincere tribute to the band Upton loved as a youth, 'Turn It On', 'Love Games' and '43' are the tracks he tackles. They all came on the Isle of Wight band's much acclaimed self-titled debut album in 1981 and here are kept true to their originals, but with plenty of synths and drum machines in place of the live instruments and a vocoder doing all the vocal work. The results will bring a smile to anyone's face.

Review: DMX Krew has had his own electro sound forever. He keeps on minding new veins within it each and every time he releases new music, which is pretty damn often despite how long he has been in the game. His latest is a double album on Terrestrial Funk that covers all aspects of his sound. There are playful melodies and squelchy bass on the opener but soon things move into more rugged dance floor territory on 'Ghost Bubble' while 'Deluge' keeps the spirit of Drexcyia alive. Brilliantly sci-fi in style, crisp in design and infectious in terms of its grooves, this is another master class from DMX Krew and his machines.

Review: If you only ever bought DMX Krew records, you could amass a pretty sizable record collection filled with high-quality releases. The Bedford-born producer is perhaps not as prolific as he once was, but the quality of his releases has never dipped. For proof, check his latest EP, which marks his first outing in Italian imprint Club Visions. He sets the tone with "Panic Stations", a melodious, jaunty and colourful skip through funk-fuelled electro territory, before reaching for the TB-303 acid lines on the Like Vibert-ish electro/acid house fusion of "Going Back". "Alkane" is a spacey, glassy-eyed chunk of retro-futurist acid house-meets-techno action, while "Last Year's Model" is a deeper stroll through warm and playful electro territory.

Review: After launching the Gudu label with a superb EP of her own productions, Peggy Gou has recruited Ed Upton AKA DMX Krew - one of the most reliable producers in the house and techno scene - to handle release number two. Upton is in fine form from the off, sprinting his way through the atmospheric late night chords, garage style organ motifs, bustling acid lines and jacking drums of opener "CJ Vibe". He moves further towards vintage Motor City techno territory on the lusciously melodious but percussively punchy peak-time skip of "DXIOO", before reaching for the boogie synths and proto-house drums on futurist electrofunk number "Don't You Wanna Play?". To round things off, Upton brilliantly dips the tempo and layers up spacey melodies over classic analogue bass on "110 Series".

Review: Ed Upton has been in fine form this year, offering up two killer albums that explore the bittersweet heart of vintage sci-fi techno and Motor City style electro. "Computor Heart", his latest club-focused EP, is a little cheerier and giddier in outlook, charging between the 4/4, funk-fuelled electro futurism of the title track, the high-octane, Kraftwerk-on-acid flex of "Inigos Groove", the bustling, all-action squelch of 8-bit dancefloor rocker "Upgrade Path" and the metallic brilliance of "Infinity Drive", where chiming melodies dance atop wonky acid lines, thickset bass, punchy beats and ultra-dreamy chords. As the tried and tested cliche goes: this is all killer, no filler.

From start to finish, the untitled set is a throbbing rush of futurist techno, fizzing electro and muscular Italo-disco workouts, with Upton's trademark sound - think funk-fuelled synth-bass, psychedelic acid lines, intergalactic chord sequences and inspired electronic flourishes - guaranteeing countless cuts of timeless electronic music. Best of all, while most of the tracks are crying out for club plays, the album can be enjoyed as a single musical journey that stands up to repeated listens.

The electro stalwart's latest four-track missive is naturally jam packed with heavy dancefloor workouts, with the title track delivering a near perfect fusion of heavy, two-step influenced electro beats, robotic vocal samples and body-popping synth-bass. Once you've toweled yourself down and are ready to go again, turn your attention to the shoulder-swinging alien electrofunk of "Neutral Net Funk", the Soulsonic Force-meets-Drexciya flex of "Urgent Enquiry" and the ambidextrous, outer space madness of "Hardware Storm", where fuzzy analogue riffs, slap bass and jaunty lead lines cluster around another rubbery electro groove. After that, a cold shower might be in order.

On this first outing on Byrd Out, he takes a different approach, serving up a quintet of dancefloor jams variously influenced by Cybotron, Drexciya, deep space electro, Inner City style house jams and glassy-eyed, Nu Groove style deep house. If you're interested in the latter, head for the wonderfully tactile and positive closer "Spiritual Machines", while the lightly soiled bottom-end sleaze and crystalline melodies of "Peripheral Visions" is the one for those interested in positive, on-point electro. "Acid Arthur", meanwhile, is a particularly good example of acid/electro fusion.

This then, marks his return to the gentle and jammed-out electrofunk and boogie vibes that he does so well. There are many treats amongst the six tracks on show, including the rubbery synth-bass, meandering synth solos and sweeping chords of "98 Groove", the aqua-funk-goes-house shuffle of "Sea Chase", the Damn Funk style goodness of "Wrong" and the sharp synth riffs and bold analogue bass of glacial closer "Sludge Fudge". In other words, it's another rock solid DMX Krew release.

Astonishingly, Strange Directions is the electro stalwart's 21st full-length excursion. Predictably, it's rather good, with Upton delivering a set that effortlessly body-pops between vocoder-laced electro workouts, melodious IDM, bass-heavy intelligent techno, gnarled Drexciyan throbbers, Artificial Intelligence style home listening fare and even a dash of muscular, tongue-in-cheek Italo-disco (the deliciously sleazy "Soft Networks"). As usual, the distinctive, off-kilter swing of original analogue hardware is present throughout, as Upton showcases his full range of talents. Recommended.

Review: Despite being at it for well over two decades, Ed 'DMX Krew' Upton shows no signs of slowing down. Even more impressively, his EPs remain as essential now as he did in the mid '90s. There's naturally much to admire on this deep, woozy and spacey electro EP for Dutch titans Shipwrec. Amongst the highlights, you'll find the deep boogie/sunny electro hybrid "Cordial", the high-octane bleep and braindance rhythms of "Ping Me Back", the dark Italo throb of "Mini-Owner", and the bubbly, Detroit-goes-to-Romford-via-Chicago quirkiness of closer "Thinking Using Another's Brain". As usual, Upton barely puts a foot wrong, with even the EP's lesser moments being head and shoulders above those produced by most of his rivals.

Review: Ekster is really pushing the boat out these days. Having recently served up another cracking full-length from eccentric IDM sort Hiele, they've now gone and recruited British electro legend Ed DMX for a similarly quirky, 10-track assault on the senses. While rooted in his usual electro influences, much of The New Age Travellers treads a different path. There are forays into deep Italo-disco and new age electronica ("Approach To Stonehenge"), tributes to British electronic music pioneers (the modular bliss of "Ritual"), nods to classic ambient ("After The Battle"), spacey weird-outs ("Engine"), bright-and-breezy synth jams ("Dayride A303"), and a dash of Radiophonic Workshop weirdness ("Strange Creatures").

Review: DMX Krew on Hypercolour? You bet! The UK electro don serves up his trademark style for the tech-house institution who seem to be broadening their horizons: can only be a good thing! Things start off in spectacular fashion with the cute and upbeat "Spiritual Encounter" before settling into some funky and mysterious electro with "Bombay Mix". Hard Copy is reminiscent of the early Hi NRG vibes of Bobby Orlando or Gino Soccio but "Woolly Hat" and "Parallel Universes" are funky, fun loving 4/4 electro grooves that are more typical of the DMX sound. He saves the best for last though, with some darker excursions such as the high octane, Telex sounding "Computational Paradigm Shift" and the smack electro closer "Black Poppy". With electro making an obvious comeback, thank goodness we've still got this legend to show us how it's done. An outstanding effort!

Review: Abstract Forms sub label Synth Funk seems dedicated to electro auteur Ed DMX thus far and you could see why can't you; the guy's a legend and still showing us all how it's done! Tha Bump! Is his third Synth Funk release after Electro Worm and Dog Funk, and pretty much carries on from where he left off. Opening track "Three Pee" or "Odd Socks" are the kind of happy electro reminiscent of Japanese Telecom in all their frayed and decayed analogue warmth. He soon ventures into electro-funk boogie territory on "Iced Bun" and "Feel-inn Fine" but saves the best for last on the high tech soul of "Catastrophic Bump".

Review: Ah yes, it's time for some hardware head fuzz from trusty old DMX Krew, an artist which requires no introduction and one whose energy and hedonism is always appreciated around these parts. DMX makes his debut on the quality Last Known Trajectory, an imprint which has risen quickly and one which has seen action from the likes of Hieroglyphic Being and electro duo The Exaltics, but also some gorgeous reissue action in the form of In Sync's mythical "Storm". "RAM Expansion" itself is a heady electro tune with a sunken load of synths at its disposal, while 'Experiment 5" is classic DMX - mad modular-like patterns surrounded by menacing drums. You also got the weird and wonderful bleeps of "Quantum Computer" on the A-side, whereas the flip kicks off with a fiery techno punch in "Division By "Zero", heads to more AFX territories via "Rubout", and ends on high-tec electro stroll of "Bad Vibes". This is no nonsense dance music at its finest.

Review: REPRESS ALERT : After landing his malfunctioning PX-4000 on the purple planet, Captain DMX steps out of the smoldering cockpit. After barely setting foot on the dusty landscape, the Captain is startled by deep thudding from over the hills. Dragging his oxygen pack with one hand and his atomizer with the other, he sets off in search of the other-wordly din. Over the hill his pupils adjust to the stroboscopic lightning and below him lies a sea of strange creatures moving together as one body. A cosmic sermon takes place under the three suns in the sky, mechanical and stuttered frequencies set a manic pace and drive the dark creatures back and forth. Captain DMX sighs a heavy breath and starts to descend into the fray....

Review: Undisputed British electro don ED DMX has made a fine return to form of late and still showing us all how its done on his nifty 7" release for the Fresh Up label. The title track on the A side is sleazy electro funk with all the right elements at work; vocoder vocals, boogie bassline groove and sleek funk guitar. On the flip we have "Space Fonk" offering up more of the same as he proudly proclaims "come on baby and funk with me, together we can touch the sky". Truer words have never been spoken!

Review: Electro legend Ed DMX aka DMX Krew returns with a fine slab of proper straight up electro that only he can deliver. On the A-side he indulges in Detroit-style electrofunk on "Supperdish", whilst "Starry Night" is as uplifting and immaculately programmed as anything by Japanese Telecom. "Squid Hunt" and "Dogg Funk" takes things down a notch or two for a smoother vibe and "Anotha Time" is all interstellar Jazz, and quite possibly the standout cut here. "Piggo" finishes up with some more smooth and sexy analogue soul. Highly recommended!

Review: Having launched Mystic & Quantum last year with Standing Stones, a DMX Krew album that drew its creative juices from the mysterious pillars of stone that have stood across Western Europe, Ed Upton is back with more LP length endeavours for the Spanish label. The enlightening methods of Buddha seem to be the source of inspiration for the ten tracks on There Is No Enduring Self (a simple press release from Mystic & Quantum merely quotes a section from Buddhist text The Sun of Enlightenment Shines) and musically Upton seems to be on spiritually enriching form with the Das Ding style "Expanding Consciousness" a real highlight. Arrives on limited transparent vinyl LP in silk screen-printed sleeve.

Review: DMX Krew aka Edward Upton requires no introduction given his impressive record which spans over twenty years and includes releases on the likes of AFX's Rephlex imprint...releases which have been responsible for creating the blueprint of UK techno. This latest EP comes courtesy of the young Super Rhythm Trax - now on its fourth release - and it's comprised of five classic DMX acid cuts. Never shy of experimenting with electronics, "Bleepology" verges on what could be considered 'cheesy' but Mr. Upton manages to steer well clear of that and comes out the other end with a bleepy, discombobulated mass of drums and bass for the big room rave. Flip the plate and you got more 303 frills with "Up N Down", molecular bleep techno on "Txing Control" and new age digi banger in "Ragga Clash". Powerful blasts of rave music for all.

Review: ** Repress due to high demand ** Hailing from somewhere in Spain, Mystic & Quantum is a new label created to show stories of "adventures, magic, science" and they launch in quite auspicious fashion with an album length foray through analogue experimentation from one of England's finest DMX Krew. One of numerous handles taken by Edward Upton, Standing Stones finds the DMX Krew sound in particularly contemplative mood across a variety of tempos and can be viewed as an extension of the approach he took on last year's Reith Tracks LP for Rush Hour's No Label. However whereas that release saw Upton take inspiration from his surroundings on an Austrian farm, Standing Stones draws it's creative juices from the mysterious pillars of stone that have stood across Western Europe for centuries. The accompanying silk screened artwork - which is quite lovely - extends the theme. Whether you engage conceptually or just focus on the music, this is another rewarding set from the master DMX Krew!

Review: Even for a man that's been as prolific as Ed Upton has for two decades, it's clear the mainstay of UK electro is in the midst of a Midas touch-style production patch with this album for Shipwrec following swiftly on from similar length projects for Mystic & Quantum and Rush Hour No Label. We could throw in all the 12" and track contributions too just to slam home how busy Upton has been. Unlike the albums for the aforementioned labels, Shape Shifting Shaman finds DMX Krew working without the constraints of concept and is no less impressive for it. Indeed there's a breezy confidence to the nine tracks here that nudges the album towards a place amongst Upton's best work of a long and richly rewarding career.

Review: In between the release of album length projects for Mystic & Quantum and Shipwrec, Ed Upton returns for Central Processing Unit duty with this collection for the label's Binary Series under his universally recognised DMK Krew banner. Upton's taking no prisoners here with six cuts aimed squarely at the electro purists out there, effortlessly combining neck snapping rhythms with those unique melodies that characterise the DMK Krew electro sound. Tracks like the fluctuating analogue drama of "Not Very", the Martian boogie of "Spook Show" and EP highlight "Crawlspace" rank this release up there with the best thus far in CPU's must check discography!

Review: Ed Upton's prolific nature across his numerous aliases has really been shown in devastating fashion this year. Having already issued album length releases on Power Vacuum and Rush Hour Distribution's No 'Label,' Upton adds Abstract Forms to his impressive collection of labels with a jam packed release that sits snugly in the interzone between EP and LP. Eight tracks deep, Micro Life is filled with the quirky electro Upton has made his own under the DMX Krew banner, adopting a modernist approach to a classic sound. From the opening track "Undesirable Element" there is a sense of melody and innate funk that few others currently engaged in flying the electro flag can match. The contrast between "Hexadecimal" and "Knights Of The Eastern Calculus" alone offer a telling example of Upton's range.

Review: Veteran UK producer Ed Upton steps up for duty on the No 'Label' operation by Rush Hour's distribution branch with a conceptual LP that's wholly representative of the experimental fare that's preceded it from the likes of Inga Copeland, Stellar OM Source and William Burnett. Whilst Upton's recent mini LP for Power Vacuum as EDMX was the sort of electro leaning techno he's renowned for, Reith Tracks is something else altogether. Recorded in full whilst Upton resided on an Austrian farm, the eight tracks here will resonate with Rephlex fans with Upton operating across a variety of tempos and apparently inspired by the farm's various locations. A handy postcard insert replete with prose from Upton further details the inspiration behind this compelling collection - as with previous No 'Label' releases do not sleep!
