Vinyl Club Concept Part III
Cat: VCLUB 0213. Rel: 13 Mar 14
Minimal/Tech House
  1. Arapu - "119mit"
  2. Lorenzo Chiabotti - "Urania"
  3. DeWalta - "Rain"
Review: Long standing Spanish minimal techno label Vinyl Club turn to another trio of producers concerned with subtle, intricate pathways to sustained shuffling grooves, with Arapu standing out with his grasp of the pared-down funky breakbeat trend that has been dominating Romanian output recently. Lorenzo Chiabotti has equally slender aesthetics at work, although his rhythm moves in a more typical house strut populated with fine slithers of found sound. DeWalta takes on a stance in line with his work on Vakant, letting dense atmospherics linger heavy around the restrained drum work. In all three instances the producers prove there's plenty of mileage in the minimal methodology yet.

  1. Within Space (10:06)

  3. Space Between (dub) (7:26)
Review: Bucharest's Cristi Cons and Germany's DeWalta have previously served up killer EPs on the latter's Meander imprint (based out of Berlin) but this is their first collaboration and it works surprisingly well. Their unique sounds individually combine to rather interesting effect. The dubby and haunting "Within Space" cruises along gracefully with syncopated percussion, rolling bass and ethereal atmosphere. Second track on the flip entitled "Space Between" is more uptempo with its rolling bass, immersive pads and swing fuelled rhythm supporting a lovely spoken word narrative. There is also a dub version for those of you less keen on the monologue.

Makers Part 1
Cat: HAUNT 0091. Rel: 22 Nov 12
Minimal/Tech House
  1. Makers (Mike Shannon mix)
  2. Makers (The Mole & Hreno mix)
Review: Sharing the first fruits of a collaborative booze-up in the studio, Makers Part 1 features Mike Shannon and The Mole & Hreno's own takes on the audio love-in. There's trademark styles from all the component artists present, most notably in DeWalta's honey-coated saxophone tones. On Shannon's mix, there's no mistaking his trademark growling synth sound and stripped-back shuffle, but it blends beautifully with the more natural tones of sax and an organ hum to produce a deep cut with imagination at its core. The Mole and Hreno feature a more rolling kind of groove, still placing the emphasis on those warming tones at the centre of the track but applying them to a different end.

  3. Lyra (6:59)
  4. Vega (13:39)
  5. Myths (7:26)
  6. Cabinet Of Mirrors (8:02)
Review: David Koch, better known as Dewalta has gradually grown his Berlin-based Meander label into one of the most respected names in minimal techno, and production wise he has really hit his stride in recent years. Testament to this is his new double opus Lyra, with the second part being a collection of ambient productions that will launch the new Horizons sublabel. In Greek mythology, Lyra represents the Lyre of Orpheus, given to Apollo, which is said to be the first music instrument ever made. The dusty and understated techno reductions that he similarly explores with studio pal Mike Shannon are evident on the album, with highlights such as "Atralux" and "Myths". Things get fully cavernous and glacial on chilling dub techno journeys such as the title track, and broadening the album's groove diversity are deep, dreamy and ethereal numbers (well suited to the afterhours) such as the evocative closer "Cabinet Of Mirrors". One of 2019's most highly anticipated albums and worth the wait.

  2. Fugacity (7:56)
  3. Lyra (8:16)
  4. Pulses (9:34)
  5. Photons (5:52)
Review: Meander boss David Koch AKA DeWalta has been a busy boy of late. Hot on the heels of his well received "Lyra" album comes "Lyra Pi", an expansive EP that's apparently meant to be a "partner piece" (or, as some in the Juno office called it, "an encore to the album"). Intriguingly, it sees him dispense with beats altogether; instead, he offers up a quintet of spacey, otherworldly ambient and experimental electronic cuts of the highest order. Highlights include the unsettling, wayward synthesizer arpeggio lines of "Fugacity", the dub techno style deep space hypnotism of "Lyra Pi", the droning darkness and buzzing, end-of-days electronics of "Pulses", and the fluid bliss of mind-altering closing cut "Photons".

  4. Causality (10:03)
Review: Following his "Residual" couplet on Indigo Raw with Mike Shannon, David Koch makes his debut on Amphibia with in style with four dusty deep grooves across two heavyweight 12s. If you know Koch's style, you'll already be all over this; three parts heavy, two parts mystic, one part unpredictable, a million parts groove - his allure is in full effect right here. Highlights include the lilting chords and Point G-style dubby shuffle to "Gravitation" and the Iz & Diz-flavoured finger clicking widescreen jack of "Causality".

Review: DeWalta again provides us with two stunning tracks, this time on his own label Meander Music. While "Eftive" is reduced to the basic elements of a drum combo with atmospheric soundscapes, "Tesla" concentrates much more on moogish sound experiments. The bassline is tenderly drifting on both tracks and takes his time to raise up. Furthermore the accompanying effects and synth experiments have a strong but minimal feel. Both tracks come with a unique sound design and take you on a journey into the late morning hours.

Bitter Earth Dub
Cat: COR 10013. Rel: 15 Nov 17
Minimal/Tech House
  1. Dewalta - "Bitter Earth Dub" (10:49)
  2. Alex & Digby - "Citadel" (9:00)
Review: Next up on Sven Vath's powerhouse Cocoon imprint is a double header from two of the biggest names in minimal house. Berlin based David Koch aka DeWalta has for the last 10 years headed up the respected Meander imprint - which has served up releases by the likes of Cristi Cons, Ion ludwig and Hreno in addition to several of his own releases: including last year's brilliant collaboration with the aforementioned Cons. His contribution "Bitter Earth Dub" is a bit more harder edged than his usual work - it's actually more reminiscent of his collaborations with good pal Mike Shannon, but the entrancing bell tones, bumpy bass and delayed claps (all trademarks of his sound) remain. On the flip, British duo Alex & Digby (Flash As A Rat/Hello? Repeat) serve up the lean micro-house groove "Citadel" which is the kind of weirdo trance inducing affair you can expect to hear at a Berlin afterhours party (like at the famed Club der Visionaere) on a Sunday morning.

Review: It was quite a time, almost 20 years ago, when David Koch (aka DeWalta) and Frithjof Meissner first met on that corn field under the sunny sky of a tiny little village, somewhere near sweet Heidelberg, Germany. Back then David had started to study acoustical instruments, mostly wind instruments. Sessions, bands and different projects led him to further studies and finally to the profession of jazz. Meanwhile Frithjof began to develop a curiosity for collecting music, besides his classical string playing. David started his own 'musical research', including issues like composing, phrasing, sound design and production-techniques which brought him finally to his music-lab and studio in Berlin. Since the two guys were living together in Berlin, they spent some years racking their brains over the phenomenon of electronic dance music. The first 12" result can be listened to on the "Nebelhorn EP" released on the German Karaoke Kalk sub-label, Kalk Pets.

All Inclusive EP
Cat: HAUNT 011. Rel: 26 Jul 13
Minimal/Tech House
  1. Cruise Ship (feat Danuel Tate)
  2. Double Booked
Review: Moving in the same circles in Berlin, it's not surprising to see Dewalta and Mike Shannon hook up for more of that bumping, jazz inflected freaky business that they cook up so well. The Haunt imprint's remit for a particular kind of leftfield house and tech-house is more than addressed with "Cruise Ship", a deadly cut buoyed by Dewalta's live saxophone as well as additional key jamming from Danuel Tate (of Cobblestone Jazz fame), ensuring that the vibe is loose and groovy throughout. "Double Booked' is a more atmospheric proposition, keeping things stripped down but still irrepressibly funky, subtle synth work from Shannon meeting with the sporadic but perfectly pitched sax stabs from Dewalta.

  2. Audio Werner - "Long Haul" (10:05)
Review: Luc Ringeisen has presented some terrific cuts as part of the ongoing Quadrilogy series on his Vinyl Club imprint over the last year, with highlights coming courtesy of Andrea Ferlin, Mariano Mateljan and Dubfound. For the third installment in the series he's prepared something special, with these artists taking over an entire side of the 12". First up are Berlin scene stalwarts DeWalta (Meander) and Topper (Sleep Is Commercial) on "About Time" which is a dose of moody and tripped-out sci-fi minimalism, which is perfect for an Autumn afterhours aboard the Hoppetosse. On the flip, they've reeled in the man Audio Werner, who displays his idiosyncratic style once again on the dark and dubby groove reductionism of "Long Haul".

Review: Haunting minimalisms packed full of subtle cheekiness and clubby vibes is what "Semi-Floating Objects" is all about, and you can really hear the machines and the people behind them bring this track to life. Meanwhile on the flip there's a watery, acid house touch to "Semi Flying Objects" that maintains the danceable, club construction of this track, which all the while keeps in theme with the spooky purposes and atmospheres of this 12". Turn the lights down for these two.

  2. DeWalta - "Be My Man" (5:54)
  3. DJ Pi-Ge - "Sanmonban" (6:33)
Review: Daze Maxim and Jan Krueger's Hello? Repeat imprint has been going strong since the early noughties and known with well repute for their reductionist techno and house grooves, paying no mind to trends or transients and sticking to their guns: and we can certainly appreciate that. On this release Krueger and Maxim collaborate as Hello? Repeat Soundsystem and present the bleepy and rolling deep groove of "Elevate Escalade" which is perfect for Sunday afterhours dancing at Club der Visionaere. Local hero and Meander main man DeWalta takes a break from collaborating with close pal Mike Shannon on "Be My Man" for some deep and dubby tech house of the most mysterious and hi-tech persuasion. Finally Osaka's DJ Pi-Ge gives us the deeply reductionist "Sanmonban" which will whisk you away delightfully with its basic trance induction.

  3. De Walta - "Pin Tweaks" (11:53)
Review: Dewalta's Meander imprint has been particularly impressive in recent times, with hot releases from the creme de la creme in minimal techno. Celebrating a decade in the business, the label presents the third edition of Family Jubilee which features a reinvigorated Konrad Black. The Canadian is creating some his best music in years, as heard on the PAN-ish experimental bass of "Snake Charmers" where he's still pursuing a similar style to that of his Scorched Earth EP which appeared on the label back in 2015. New York City tech house hero (and one third of Soundwalk Collective) Kamran Sadeghi presents the slinky groove of "Amber Alert" that is full of the same hypnotic polyrhythms as heard on his Astral Body EP for label last year. De Walta himself gives us the eerie minimal futurism of "Pin Tweaks" which is a perfect closer for this fine EP.
