A2 - "Plonk" (7:59)
Dario Reimann - "Iatch" (5:49)
Harry Wills - "Estren" (7:59)
Carl Finlow - "Fmseq" (6:33)
Review: Just under 12 months ago, French imprint Arpege launched with a multi-artist EP rich in far-sighted and futuristic takes on tech-house. For the follow-up they've decided to flip the script, instead offering up a quartet of electro-focused cuts. The headline attraction comes from British electro titan Carl Finlow, whose "Fmseq" is a spacey and melodious mixture of body-popping beats, throbbing bass, lilting lead lines and sparkling chords. There's plenty to set the pulse racing elsewhere across the EP though, from the heady deep space bleeps and hybrid electro/tech-house grooves of Harry Wills' "Estren", to the drowsy electronic warmth, bubbly acid bass and skittish beats of A2's "Plonk".

Assembler Code - "Line Of Sight" (5:19)
Carl Finlow - "Syncopated Automated" (6:57)
Versalife - "SH09" (6:02)
Review: This is a special sampler 12" taken from the Various Artists compilation Defend Your Planet that Avoidant Records put out. It features a heavyweight crew of electro mainstays, first of which are The Advent & Zein Ferreira. Their 'Defend Your Plane' is a turbo powered cosmic assault with skewed synths and high speed drums. Assembler Code's 'Line Of Sight' doesn't let up, powering on through sheet metal snares and juddering drum programming and then man like Carl Finlow layers in prickly melodies, dark sci-fi energy and booming bass. Analogue master Versalife shits things down with the shadowy 'SH09.'

Detroit's Filthiest - "Werewolf" (5:21)
Modulator AKA Freddie Fresh - "Promars" (5:27)
Review: EPM20 Ep2 goes off on an electro tangent here. On this one, we have veteran producer Cisco Ferreira aka The Advent teaming up with his son Zein on the ferocious electro dystopia of "Strangeform" and as if that was not enough, another legend, the one and only Carl Finlow appears next with the abstract, cybernetic beats of "Optogenetic". Over on the flip, we have someone by the name of Detroit's Filthiest (quite an accolade!) who is in fact Motor City stalwart Julian Shamou (Motor City Electro Company) known for his work as 313 Bass Mechanics or Digitek, and longstanding hero of the Midwest Freddie Fresh should need no introduction; his contribution here under the Modulator alias is the deep mind IDM journey "Promars".

Ron Trent, Chez Damier - "Now Is The Time" (5:53)
Review: The incorrigible Master Jams has just gone and reissued four of the hottest Chez Damier cuts, originally out on the timeless - and much coveted - Prescription Records out of Chi-Town. The first cut "I Wouldn't" sees Damier team up with Dpac and T FM to produce a bright and sparkly house groove for the Saturday evening crew, followed by the deeper, jazzier, more disco-centric beats and bass banging of "I Remember Dance" featuring Ralph Lawson and Carl Finlow. The magic comes on the flip, however, where Damier teams up with like-minded legend Ron Trent on the glorious "Foot Therapy", and the rolling punch of drums and bass that is "Now Is The Time". Don't even think twice - cop on sight!

Review: Every new Carl Finlow record release brings an enthusiastic interest to those who follow him. Carl's robotic electro prowess is on full display on the A-side in 'Heed'. Fans of early 80s electro, Kraftwerk and the future of the genre, swear by this guy. 'Overlord' is a deeper groove that reminds of his otherworldly Silicon Scally moniker. 'Expansion' is just down right dirty. Nuff said! Dangerous stuff from one of the most consistent producers in futuristic electro.

Count On It (Noha Count On Me remix)
Review: Italian label Panick Panick! might be best known for carrying releases from the likes of Noha and Elon, but now they're welcoming the mighty Carl Finlow to the fold. There's always an electroid streak to the legendary producer's sound, but he's equally tipped towards the steady thump of 4/4 on this particular outing. That doesn't dilute the imaginative brushstrokes of his immaculate production one jot, best demonstrated on the sparkling 'Count On It' with its rich layers of modulating synth work. Noha offers reinterpretations of both original tracks on the B side, edging in a little more Euro techno functionality without dampening the flamboyant spirit of Finlow's production style.

Review: Carl Finlow really is the electro gift that keeps on giving. It seems like he drops new music on a near-weekly basis and it never dips in quality. This time he is on the We're Going Deep label and his music-making machines are in fine fettle. 'Equi' opens up with a sense of caution - the nimble drums and chrome-plated synths keeping you on edge, while 'Aether' unfurls into a widescreen and laid-back electro journey to the stars. There is more menace and bite to 'Affinity' with its superbly reverb-enriched kicks and 'Septagon' again cuts loose on playful melodic sequences.

Review: Carl Finlow is one of those artists who is universally admired and respected. His work in the world of electro is second to none and all these years later the Stateside Brit keeps on turning out the jams. He does so for Belgian label Elypsia here and starts off with some fizzing and snappy action in the form of 'Fractionality' which has bounce and bite in equal measure. There's a more zoned-out deep space feel to 'Anomaly' and a downtempo bliss to 'Dust To Dust'. The flipside kicks off with some turbo-charged and ghetto-fried Motor Citry electro in 'Visceral' before two more electro gems get a little more atmospheric and deep.

Review: Carl Finlow has produced an astonishing catalogue of music over a career spanning three decades, with his discography including hundreds of releases and remixes under a variety of monikers. 'Desequence' is the latest edition to Finlow's expansive productions and a masterclass in electronic music.

'Desequence' kicks off the record with a heavy dose of integalactic funk with interstellar beats rockin' over squelchy bass lines and razor sharp glitches. While 'Downstream' delivers a warped groove wrapped up in Finlow's intricate programming.

'Guttural' is an overwhelming assault of rapid fire elements, forming complex off kilter breaks littered with robotic licks and served over deep, low end bass. 'Wavefront' closes yet another impeccable addition to Finlow's highly accomplished works, with an off planet adventure through extraterrestrial soundscapes.

Review: For the penultimate volume in Science Cult's space exploration-inspired Astra Spectra series, label boss Syrte has served up an EP from arguably Britain's most decorated electro producer, Carl Finlow. The veteran studio buff delivers a quartet of stargazing excursions, where deep space electronics and sci-fi bleeps ride black hole chords, supernova bass and crunchy electro drums. Our current favourites are moody opener 'ADDA', the '80s-electro influenced star-shower of 'Undiluted' and the slightly more aggressive and mind-bending 'Internalized'. Syrte's bonus remix of 'ADDA', which is darker, tougher and faster, is also well worth a listen.

The man has been knocking out essential cuts like this for decades and seems to be getting even more prolific and better with each one, if that is possible. The Uk legend now makes his debut proper on Avoidant Records with four more clinical and assault-ready analogue workouts. The intergalactic tension that holds all these tunes totters is perfect. The crispy drum programming, the scurrying basslines and pixeleated leads all come from another dimension. Essential.

Review: Carl Finlow, aka electro main-man Silicon Scally, originally released the Boot Loop EP on Billy Nasty's Electrix label back in 2013 - an aeon ago in real terms but a blink of an eye to any electro devotee. Such is the quality of the music that it's well deserving of a repress, not least given the fearsome appetite for this kind of electro now compared to seven years ago. "Conduit" and "Hashtag" are quintessential Finlow cuts, wriggling and writhing with snappy sound design riveted to the machine funk rhythm section. On the flip, Volsoc's "Orange Problem" mix of "Conduit" slips a few more melodic elements into the mix, and Radioactive Man flips "Hashtag" into a gnarly, noisy workout bowling in from leftfield.

Review: The Craigie Knowes catalogue is full of mighty fine machine music, though it's only in recent times that the Scottish imprint has embraced electro. This 12" comes from one of electro's longest-serving talents, British scene stalwart Carl Finlow. As you'd expect, the quality threshold remains impressively high throughout, with Finlow breakdancing between deep, poignant electro/synth-pop fusion ("Descent"), starburst, ultra-melodious electronic bliss (the body-popping flex of "Undertones"), hard-wired mutant funk ("Cascade") and stretched-out electronic soundscapes that sit somewhere between pitched-down electro and evocative ambient techno. Finlow is a master at squeezing every last drop of emotion from his machines so it's no surprise that this EP is another emotive, mood enhancing treat.

Review: Long time underground legend Carl Finlow is back with more of his rugged and storytelling electro, this time on Spanish label Fanzine Records. There is an industrial turbulence to "Gains" which is coloured by dark energy and paranoid forces. "Black Ice" builds on that with frazzled synths and crashing hits while "Expose" is a brilliantly unsettling and mysterious electro cut that has you looking over your shoulder. "Obscura" closes out with robot-funk and slapping drums that are underpinned by broad, sweeping bass. Essential.

Review: Unstoppable electro machine Carl Finlow (aka Silicon Scally) lands on Orson with more of that impeccable robo-funk he's so revered for. "Elastic Collisions" leads the charge with a tough and teasing workout that works around a heavy low end and plenty of sparkling sound design up top. "Octodecillion" keeps things on a dystopian tip, where a bleak future sounds as funky as it does ominous. "Probabilities" heads into a less floor-focused space where thick layers of buffed and polished synth wriggles collide in high-definition. "Mechanomics" completes the set with another taut belter geared towards the heads down section of the party.

The machine funk specialist rocks up to his regular stomping ground of 20/20 Vision with another slab of crucial beats for body poppers to get frisky to, kicking off with the crisp, future-noir stylings of "Electronic". Things take an even darker turn on the murky "Side Effects", while "Vortices" weaves a more mystical message out of the intricate threads of synths and drum machine hits. The EP closes out with "Flaw", a blown out and irrepressibly funky workout Drexciya heads will lap up.

One of the UK's leading (and longest serving) exponents of electro comes correct with four razor sharp slabs of upfront rave-ready tackle. "Circuitous" is a snarling acidic beatdown, while "Epsilon" pivots around crooked polyrhythmic trysts that will have your brain body popping into next week. Review: Legendary UK techno-electro producer Carl Finlow has been absent for a few years since his last EP for Lost In Time but, he's been busy recently, and a short succession of releases has reestablished his place at the top of the pecking order. He's up on the Craig Knowes imprint delivering the label's first EP, and it's a wonderful four-tracker set in a moody, cinematic view that is bound to please more than one audience. "Beckoned" is a melodic electro rhythm with a driving bassline, there's a 2016 reissue of his seminal "Anomaly" groove; on the flip, "Boron" has more of a techno sensibility for the big room dancefloor, and "Photonics" sounds like it's been made in 3D, a shimmering and ice-cold techno bullet with an industrial edge.

Review: Carl Finlow's been smashing it since the early days. Back in the mid 1990s he was releasing on 20:20 Vision at the beginning of their illustrious path to glory, he's featured on countless tunes alongside the likes of Ralph Lawson, and he's even featured on our favourite 7th Sign Recordings. It's 2016, however, and he's branched out into more electro-like paths as of late, landing here on the beautifully gritty Electrix Records with four killer cuts. From "Lateral Thoughts" to "Latex", Finlow's brand of electro is rooted in that 80's IDM charm, meaning that although these tunes work wonders as club fillers, they also offer an immersive listening experience from a musical point of view. Tipped.

Review: Earlier this year saw the phoenix-like relaunch of Billy Nasty's iconic Electrix Records label after six years of dormancy with the superbly monikered Clave To The Rhythm EP from Radio Nasty setting the standard for what to expect. Back 2 Basics co-founder Carl A Finlow is a fine choice to continue the label's second ascent, and marks his return to Electrix having released the Format Years 12" a decade ago. The Boot Loop EP is the sort of tough, tech infused electro you want from an Electrix release, "Conduit" sits just the right side of Breaks, whilst "Hashtag" sounds like a disorientated Gesloten Circkel. Killer remixes too from Radioactive Man and Volsoc, the pair of Jean-Paul Bondy and Justin Maxwell who apparently got back in the studio especially for this release.

The 20:20 Vision man steps into that house role here with one of his most dancefloor-oriented releases yet. 'Count On It' uses warm dub house synths and killer chunky drum grooves tied together with a retro analogue bassline that gives you maximum groove factor. His works as Silicon Scally are a particular highlight, channeling the seediest streams of Detroit electro and injecting a little of that UK verve and swagger into the mix, with invariably stunning results. Watch out for the seductive bite of "Dark Matter" and the dystopian funk of "Deep Dissolve", but in truth every selection on this choice double pack is worthy of some serious platter time.

For Those That Knoe are doing the right thing in gathering together some choice cuts from over the years - the Voice Stealer jams in particular stand out with their miscreant tones and overall uneasy atmosphere tapping into the malaise of the darker Drexciya-related output. There are all shades of electro to be enjoyed on here though, and hopefully it'll place Finlow on the radar for a few more heads.

Dub is one of the most overused words in dance music.

The word is usually used to mean an instrumental mix with perhaps the odd delayed vocal thrown in. But the rich history of dub has it's roots as far back as the 1960s when Jamaican pioneer King Tubby started to create stripped down versions of songs using just the 'Riddim' tracks with heavy use of echo and reverb effects units. Since then dub has had an impact and influence on every worthwhile form of dance music including House Music.

The Lost in Time series continues the story with its' own dub pilgrimage for the third release on the imprint. Heavy research into the techniques and methods first employed at Tubby's by co-creator Ralph Lawson led to a series of live dub sessions at Unblock Studios, home of Italian producer Tuccillo with Carl Finlow on additional keys. Recorded in live takes with all hands on deck using vintage analog gear and effects units the trio took inspiration from Dub Techno pioneers Basic Channel and the sublime Round series created by Maurizio and Chez Damier to attempt to produce new cutting edge electronic music in a dub style.

Three cuts all squarely levelled towards discerning underground dance floors continue the journey for dub as it finds an outlet in house and techno landscapes...

Lost In Space
Throb
Review: There seems to be no shortage of high grade Ralph Lawson fodder emerging at present, from archive reissues to fresh material, and this release almost straddles both as Lawson links up once more with original mid 90s sparring partner Carl Finlow, although this time Tuccillo is also on board to represent the new school. The three tracks are steeped in finely balanced form for heads down grooving, keeping things simple on "Kings" with a hooky bassline loop and some understated drums while "Lost In Space" gets a little trippier with a dubby chord or two. "Throb" seems to follow on from its predecessor in a dub version with a more progressive tint and less of the melodics.

Ralph Lawson & Chez Damier - "The Moment"
Ralph Lawson & Tuccillo - "Attraction"
Ralph Lawson & Carl Finlow - "Lost In Time"
Review: It's a good time for fans of 2020 Vision boss Ralph Lawson as his production career enjoys a resurgence thanks in no small part to the high calibre of producers he has linked up with over the years. Chez Damier too has enjoyed some reissue love lately, and their partnership yielded plenty of fruits, including this impeccably crafted tech house burner "The Moment", all submerged chords and urgent rhythmic thrust. "Attraction" with Tuccillo is a lighter affair, dropping some catchy arpeggios and friendly chord stabs into a snappy deep house number, while "Lost In Time" finds Carl Finlow lending a hand for a sultry blend of brooding bass and ambient haze.

Review: One of this week's more pleasantly surprising releases is by Christian Smith's longstanding Tronic label, and features artists you wouldn't usually expect. Motor City stalwart DJ Godfather serves up some dystopian electro on 'Invasion Of Detroit', legend Carl Finlow presents another fine example of his idiosyncratic futurism on 'Anomaly 3' and even Swedish techno veteran Samuel L Sessions gets in on the electro act - on the data bass of 'Engine Of War'.
