Peg (7")
Cat: ABCR 002. Rel: 29 Jun 15
Disco/Nu-Disco
  1. Peg (3:32)
  2. Dream Wave (2:50)
Review: Multi-instrumentalist synth-fancier Brian Ellis has already proved to be more than adept at crafting high quality revivalist electrofunk, with the Omega Supreme released "Midnight Again" being a particularly potent example. Here he pops up on Austin Boogie Crew with "Peg", an all synthesizer-and-talk box cover of the much-admired Steely Dan classic. While a curious idea, it works remarkably well, with the famous melody lines and guitar riffs translating perfectly to shimmering synthesizer parts. Original B-side "Dream Wave" is great, too, with a delightfully glassy-eyed, almost Balearic feel to the tuneful synths and skittering drum machine grooves. Only a limited number have been pressed, so don't sleep on this one.

Review: Benbecula are over the moon to secure Brian Ellis, the multi-talented individual from the west coast of the USA, whose jazz inspired mix of electronic funk is possibly one of the most unique blends of sound to be produced this decade. Followers of the label will no doubt recognise Brian's output as one half duo behind the highly acclaimed Minerals release "Free Festival". Brian's solo work is a phenomenal one man band with multi-tracked instrumentation that is so well put together it easily deceives, sounding more like a six piece band. "The Silver Creature" must not be missed.

Review: Those who keep a keen eye on the revivalist electrofunk scene should be well aware of Brian Ellis. The synthesizer-obsessed multi-instrumentalist has been responsible for a string of killer singles in recent years, including a brilliant, all-synthesizer cover of Steely Dan's "Peg". Mirror Mirror is the prolific Californian's eight solo album and sees him fuse his usual analogue synth movements with the laidback grooves of 1970s West Coast rock. It's a hugely appealing combination, with standout tracks such as "High", the Steely Dan-with-synths bliss of "Love Burn Out" and instrumental yacht rock brilliance of "Keep it Passionate" evoking images of sun-kissed daytime drives up the Pacific highway.
