Review: In seeking to explore music's place in time and space, Emotional Response has cast a wide fusion. Interpretations on krautrock (Black Deer/Montezumas Rache), techno (Not Waving/Roy Of The Ravers), kosmische (Brain Machine), polyrhythms (Durian Brothers/Don't DJ), psychedelic (Fuxa/Tomaga), balearic (Secret Circuit/The Naturals), drone (Abul Mogard/Matthewdavid) and ambient (pretty much the rest of the catalogue) has prevailed a meandering journey, with some surprises.

This continues with this 'archival' release of Brainwaltzera's Marzipan EP. As can occur in the nature of electronic music, the self-released 2016 original came and went in a blink. Hyped and sold out, soaring resale values testify a record successfully combining old and new, of known and unknowns, within a romanticised view of sound.

Organic, smart, melancholic, the deliberately mysterious nature of the artist fits. A life in movement, this music stands as testament. Freedom, a propensity to ignored complacency. 5 tracks become 4. A retro-futurist brain dance. Blurred, intelligent, trippy, deep, heady, all and more.

Review: Before he'd even released any music, Brainwaltzera's tracks were being "liked" by Aphex Twin. It caused a bit of a furore - and subsequently the hype surrounding this admittedly superb debut album - but the patronage of Richard D James is in many ways fitting. You see, Poly Ana is full of the kind of hard-to-pigeonhole electronic fare that could have come from the legendary Cornish producer's studio. There are moments of fluid, ghostly ambience, alternately clattering and crackling IDM machine jams, mind-altering leftfield techno throb-jobs and fizzing, braindance-inspired workouts. Imaginative, emotive, off-kilter and left-of-centre, it's litte less than a triumphant first album.

Review: Fresh from the release of a fine EP of braindance-influenced workouts on Analogical Force, mysterious producer Brainwaltzera delivers his second full-length excursion. This time round, the influences are a lot more horizontal in tone, as the sometime Film artist explores the blurred lines between early '90s ambient, IDM, intelligent techno, drowsy trip-hop and deep space electro. It's a heady and intoxicating brew, as inspired by contemporary takes on classic British electronica as Boards of Canada and Aphex Twin. Highlights bubble to the surface with impressive frequency, from the hazy and horizontal beauty of "Poly_Ana Summers" and Pete Namlook style "Take 1" (complete with tape hiss and cyclical, Steve Reich style melodic movements), to the crunchy, skewed beats of "Frikadel (The End Bit)".

Review: After the ultra-limited white vinyl edition of Brainwaltzera's superb "Epi Log EP" sold out in record time last year, Film has bowed to demand and served up this speedy black vinyl reissue. If you missed out first time around (and many of us did), it's worth picking up. Highlights are plentiful throughout, from the mind-altering throb of "Doctor Who"-goes-dub techno pulse of "Triangulate Dither (Fairytall version)" and deep space bliss of "[Take 2]", to the Autechre style IDM breakbeats and chiming melodies of "Count_Dem_Pops". Brainwaltzera even chucks in a track that sounds like Boards of Canada jamming with Dam Funk (the dreamy "Bad Endgar"), which sounds every bit as wonderful as it looks on paper.

  5. Rawmance - "Mondonotte, La Mattina Dopo" (Security re-drums) (3:30)
Review: La Beaute Du Negatif's fourth multi-artist EP arrives with little fanfare or fuss. Instead, the Rome-based label has decided to simply offer-up the EP and let us come to our own conclusions. For what it's worth, ours is that it's well worth checking - especially Monomorph's blissful, acid-flecked IDM opener "Rystal", which previously appeared on a hard-to-find CD way back in 1996. There are plenty of highlights elsewhere across the EP, though. Head first for the sparse, spacey cheeriness of Brainwaltzera's "Phos Harbinger", before getting your ears around the ambient jungle-techno brilliance of "Opener" by The Jaffa Kid. This is followed on side B by the shuffling, sun-kissed downtempo grooves of SSIEGE's "Sogno In BB" and a drowsy, mind-altering chunk of late 90s Warp Records style electronica by Rawmance.
