Review: The Boy With The Arab Strap gets a special 25th Anniversary rerub. The third album by Scottish indie popsicles Belle & Sebastian, originally released in 1998, it's one of the false duo's more acclaimed projects, having notably been made in the space of several months (compared to their first two albums which were supposedly each made in just a couple of days). Also more experimental and collaborative than their earlier work, the album dared to indulge spoken-word segments as well as increasing songwriting contributions from different members of the group. A controversy around the LP's name - indeed, perhaps only some among us will know what an Arab strap is - tops it all off. However, we can assure you that the new liner notes and behind-the-scenes photos included in the reissue don't emphasise its connotations, and instead reminisce over the LP's twinkly, sensitive indie-folk image.

Review: Scottish indie-pop darlings Belle and Sebastian are back with a second album in a year. Late Developers is their 10th overall and came as rather a surprise out of the leftfield when it was first announced at short notice. The first single 'I Don't Know What You See In Me' is a big, rousing, infectious pop tune that reminded us that this band is far from done yet. It is a creative powerhouse that comes some 25 years after their first release and is full of the magical hooks this band is so well known and loved for. From big and energetic cut to dance-ready jams via a co-write with young pop composer Pete Ferguson, this is a real doozy.

Review: Talk about starting the year on a positive note. We're barely a fortnight in and this iconic outfit are already bestowing a startlingly good new record on us - startling not least because it arrives hot on the heels of 2022's Top 10 LP, A Bit of Previous. Also startling just because it's plain brilliant, easily rubbing shoulders with its predecessor in terms of quality.

On their latest adventure we don't sit still for long, with a number of styles both familiar and bold fused together. There's high energy rough and readiness on 'Juliet Naked', psyche pop reigns when 'So in the Moment' drops, and jangling guitars do the business throughout 'When We Were Very Young'. Back with a bang, instant return delivered with aplomb, by this point you have to wonder how they keep doing it.

Review: When the world seems like it's coming apart at the seams, you can always rely on Belle & Sebastian to lift your spirits. It may have been a while since we last heard from the long-serving Glaswegian combo - A Bit of Previous, their tenth album, is also their first for seven years - but the old magic still remains. While the lyrics deal with all manner of subjects - not least the march of time and the weight of their own musical history - the accompanying music is largely triumphantly cheery, or at the very least the sonic equivalent of Prozac. As a result, standouts are plentiful, with our picks including the glassy-eyed, gospel-tinged Americana-soul fusion of 'If They're Shooting at You', the pedal steel-sporting indie-pop breeze of 'Young and Stupid' and the fuzzy, low-slung, post-punk/indie-pop fusion of 'Unnecessary Drama'.
