A-Dubz #9 (6:43)
Review: The enigmatic Alex Agore returns! The Berlin based producer and co head of No Matter What (with Scot James Johnston) and Closer To Truth (with Brit David Nicol) serves up some more of his timeless classic house jams here on Pocket Money: an independent label based out of Manchester that's dedicated to releasing modern underground house music with rhythm and soul, influenced by New York, Detroit and Chicago. This follows up a great release by Polish producer Soul Habitat. On the A side it's all about the raw NYC basement vibe of "A-Dubz #3" taking you all the way back to the glory days of The Red Zone. On the flip, the uplifting garage sounds of "A-Dubz #7" are reminiscent of classic Junior Boys Own while the thumpin' "A-Dubz #9" has that undeniably Kerri Chandler vibe happening. Tip!

The Only Time
Review: The fifth release on KV Records is dedicated to Berlin-based producer Alex Agore who is certainly one of the most talented musicians in the house music business nowadays. This EP reflects the best of what house music can offer when it is about celebrating the underground sounds of the 90s coming from New York. The whole record is here to make you dance, groove & sing: deep chords, warm vocals, infectious rhythms & basslines ... in short, 100% pure house music.

Falling
There's No Love
I Can Feel You
Review: Following the success of the Consumer EP by fellow label owner James Johnston comes the Praise EP by Alex Agore, and it's a true return to form for him on No Matter What. The record opens with the title track "Praise" - an inspired tribute to gospel music, keeping all the soul but reimagining it into something more infectious. Uplifting keys combine with vocals that will have you trying your best to sing-a-long, over a bass groove that holds it all together. "Falling" is a slower affair, with its dream-like chords, airy synthwork, cowbell hits and seamless hats. A perfect track to start a night or to end one. The B-side completes the package with two undeniable house jams. You will soon realise how much you like "There's No Love" when its skippy vocal is stuck in your head, hours after hearing it for the first time. "I Can Feel You" closes out the EP on a deeper note which will have you thinking of moments when the sun is about to rise, yet the night is far from over.

Review: The Deep Down Slam label has Alex Agore supply some Rhodesy house for their third release. Swooning organs and various clatters of hats and percussion rattle "Show U Love" while stretched out synths lay spread over a syncopated bassline and cut vocals in "Get Dub". "No Name 3" sees more luscious Rhodes and chimey organs play out a dancey house melody, while "We Can't Talk" adds more chordal riffage to an EP which screams house music.

X (original mix)
Ice Crystals (original mix)
Everyday (U Lift Me Up)
Review: The first installment of Alex Agore's Mizz Honey EP ensured the prolific German producer debuted fully on the Say Ahh! label. This second edition of the Mizz Honey series maintains those high standards and hopefully ensures the door remains open for subsequent Agore output on the label run by the brotherly duo of MK and Scottie Deep. "X" sets the tone, looking to a Salsoul gem for vocal inspiration and swamping the sample in a thick, bumping house groove spread across the A Side that must have instantly grabbed the Brothers Kinchen. The flip pairs the finger snapping, soulful slam of "Ice Crystals" with the immediately infectious piano house business of "Everyday (U Lift Me Up)".

Becuz Of You
Unbelievable
Review: Both Alex Agore and Say Ahh! had impressive calendar years in 2012, and following several remix commissions for the breakout label run by the brotherly duo of MK and Scottie Deep, makes his full debut in impressive fashion. Agore's classicist house style is a perfect fit for Say Ahh! and set to be explored across two coloured vinyl releases; the inaugural Mizz Honey EP arrives on pink vinyl brandishing a superb title track. Thick, bassy drums lay down a bumping groove, whilst a filtered vocal sample and gloriously tinny piano line hook you right in. On the flip, "Becuzz Of You" adopts a noticeably deeper tone with a nice smudgey sheen coating Agore's trademark percussive bump, whilst "Unbelievable" wraps the titular vocal hook endlessly around a driving, searching, stripped back groove.

Baby Please
Review: Dutch deep house producer Alex Agore makes his debut on the Quintessentials imprint with four chunky cuts of NY-inspired house. A-Side tracks "Move" and "Get Away" both bristle with sultry energy; the former's robust kick drum-sweaty vocal combo could easily be a lost Kerri Chandler production, while the latter locks into a deepish groove with a gently throbbing bassline, expertly chopped vocal moans and languid keys. On the flip, "Cruel" and "Baby Please" tread a similar path; the jazzy piano and fully revealed vocal on "Cruel" has the kind of effortless groove that many a house producer spend careers trying to nail, while the closing cut is a mutant after hours sleaze jam of the highest order. Well worth checking.

Protect Me
Don't Need No One
Review: Kolour Recordings' Undertones offshoot has impressed to date with outings from heavyweight producers such as Delano Smith, KiNK, Red Rack'em and Moodymanc. To celebrate the milestone tenth release, East Berliner Alex Agore is called upon to grace Undertones with his classy brand of deepness. No stranger to the Detroit label having provided one of their best releases in last year's Promised You Love, Agore is in fine form again as demonstrated on the EP title track. Filled with languid keys, "Love Confusion" is a subtle excursion into simmering house tension made notable by the crafty layers of drums and percussion. Complementing this, the orchestral flourishes of "Protect Me" are underpinned by a delightfully gloopy bassline and skittering drums which lay down the foundations for an excellent vocal hook. On the flip "Don't Need No One" has summer time written all over it, plus the subtle atmospherics that operate deep in the mix sound great when you flip the track at the wrong speed!

The Wayz Of Wayback

Jazz Thing
Review: Alex Agore returns to 4Lux following the success of his "I Remember House" on the imprint at the end of last year. With "Victory", the German delivers an EP of four super deep, groove-led house tracks that touch on disco, dub, tech, jazz and the jacking sound of Detroit. The title track begins in a reggae influenced mood but switches to twinkling house. "The Dayz of Wayback" is slow, liquid disco infused house and "Skyraider" is vintage soul with a pumping house twist. "Jazz Thing", a continually building jazz-house jam completes a release that is sure to further enhance Agore's fast rising reputation.

Review: Allnite Music 002 brings Alex Agore with some of his best works so far. Both "Basement Jam" and "Be Someone" tracks strikes right the middle of the target, somehow between his earlier '4Lux' works and his 'No Matter What' hot dancefloor stuff. On B Side, Apoena presents two grooved House tracks with Jazz sounding keys cut directly from vinyl. Just a killer 4-tracker!

Review: Launching with a very clear remit in mind, Prized are obviously set on being all about clean, smooth deep house. They've reached for an interesting spread of accomplished producers who have been doing the right things in the right places for a number of years now, and they sit together perfectly on this EP. Alex Agore has a punchy production finish and a prime cut of garage diva vocals; Ernie is a little more languid in his own "Tu En Mi", while Stojche takes a different tack with a robotic Detroit-flavoured jam that makes a nice diversion from the rest of what's on offer.

Alex Agore - "Stalker"
Fabio Monesi - "Momma' Groove"
Washerman - "Just A Moody Guy"
Luca Ballerini - "X Track"
Review: The newly minted Wilson imprint come brandishing a steadfastly enthusiastic keep vinyl alive approach, warning people on their site to "play it on vinyl or don't play it" and their debut release shows an equal respect for the true production values founded in Chicago and Detroit. The Underground Warriors EP pairs the old and trusted with the new and exciting as respected producers Alex Agore and Washerman share space with the upcoming Italian duo Fabio Monesi and Luca Ballerini. Naturally the contributions from the Berlin dwelling Agore and Swiss producer Washerman demonstrate a clear level of accomplishment, with the former's "Stalker" dripping with emotive intent. Don't discount the tracks from the lesser known duo however with "Momma' Groove" from Monesi an excellent drum machine workout complemented by oven warm pads.

James Johnston - "Not So Easy"
Review: Founded by Alex Agore and James Johnston last year, No Matter What Recordings has proved to be a potent outlet for the duo's inimitable take on crisp rolling house sounds in the label's short life to date and this fourth release maintains those standards. After two solo EPs from the respective label heads, the deftly titled A2J2 EP mimics the label debut with a pair of productions from both, with Berlin resident Alex Agore calling shotgun. Muddy vocals and old school piano lines soar through the shamelessly vibing pump of "Come On" while "Take Me" has Agore in a deeper frame of mind, unfurling the various melodic textures with aplomb over a crashing beat. Not to be outdone, JJ opts for a rawer swinging approach with "Stand Up & Jump" utilising a similar cut up vocal sound which gets increasingly submerged amidst the thick, twisting groove. "Not So Easy" might just be the pick of the bunch however, swamping the intricate drum programming in a rich melange of Motor City Soul that sucks you right in.

Review: All that jelly and no toast - like when you find a bomb tune that's unavailable on 12". The new sublabel of Smile for a While is exactly about this. Clubby House Music by well-established producers as well as from lesser-known guys. French guy Alex Agore opens the EP with the Lowtone remix of "What Did I Do" - cut-up Garage House to the maxx. Max Chapman from London delivers another belter; a bassline-driven organ House tune with a minimalistic but very effective set-up. Oleg Poliakov - aka SKAT and one of the guys behind Circus Company - comes up with a sublime but powerful Tech House tune, in the original sense of the genre name. "Jazzve" is a tune by Russian producer Mutenoise. It's maybe the most original, innovative tune on this EP. Full of surprises and cutting-edge elements - hard to compare to anything else around these days.

Native Sound - "Into Tha Etha"
Review: Brooklyn's Cortelyou Recordings claims to be on a mission to release great house from around the world, be it from Detroit, Chicago, Berlin, Johannesburg or London. On The Corner Volume One, can be seen as a mission statement then. It features four varied cuts, each exploring a different area of house, from four different producers. James Duncan kicks things off with a bumpin', old skool piano number, before Alex Agore goes chunky and lo-slung on the hip-house influenced "Pimp Stomp". Nottingham's Red Rack'em weighs in with the ultra-deep "Fellini" (Italo art house anyone?), before Native Sound go all strange and druggy on the afterhours flavoured "Into Tha Ethaa". Impressive stuff.

Review: UK don James Johnston and German champ Alex Agore once again come together on their hot-to-trot No Matter What imprint to lay down the law on their righteous tributes to vintage house music. Johnston delivers some dreamy garage swing on "Think About U Everyday", and takes things deeper on "Do U Understand?" by drawing you in with an alluring chord line that purrs at the heart of the track. Agore is in equally feisty mood with some textbook vocal turns over his "In My Soul" workout, and then switches up for a breezy, carefree wriggler in the form of "In Your Arms".
