PITPWLS 03 (12" limited to 200 copies) (1 per customer)
Cat: PITPWLS 03. Rel: 26 Jun 20
  1. Track 1 (9:40)
  2. Track 2 (9:23)
Review: Two Past Inside the Present artists that have previously released works on the PITP label come together for this anonymous split ep. 19 minutes of lush, slow-moving ambient trails. With this record we want listeners to go in blind, without ego or expectation, with the sole focus on what truly matters: the music. The artists and titles will remain anonymous until the vinyl sells out and then we will reveal all.

THESIS 10 (hand-numbered 10" + MP3 download code in die-cut sleeve limited to 300 copies)

  1. Track 1 (6:45)
  2. Track 2 (6:06)
  3. Track 3 (3:43)
  4. Track 4 (6:46)
Review: Second time around for Julianna Barwick and Rafael Anton Irisarri's lauded contribution to the THESIS label's series of collaborative 10-inch singles. The 2017 set has been in high demand since it first appeared in stores, and with a limited number available outside the US for the first time we're expecting it to sell out in double-quick time. Musically, it's one of the most picturesque things that Irissari has been involved in. The untitled opener delivers a near perfect fusion of layered improvised vocals and wispy ambient electronics, while the track that follows brilliantly builds to a crescendo of Tangerine Dream style arpeggio melodies, densely layered textures and acid-esque motifs. The flipside opener is a more softly spun, deep ambient soundscape, while the EP's closing cut is sparkling, spacey and hugely alluring.

  1. Blanked Out (2:16)
  2. Flote (6:23)
  3. Swerl (5:34)
  4. SMP (4:52)
Review: Leeds lad Chekov was one of the first artists Shanti Celeste turned to when she launched Peach Discs with Housework pal Gramrcy back in 2017. Here he returns to action with his first solo EP since and it's a bit of a beauty. He beginnings with the immersive, sunrise-ready ambient swell of "Blanked Out", where layered synthesizer motifs flutter atop the sound of what sounds like a heavily processed recording of a babbling brook, before skipping towards the dancefloor via the beefy broken techno drums, 16-bit melodies and spacey electronic sounds of "Flote". "Swerl" is a near perfect fusion of immersive chords, bittersweet motifs, chiming melodies and crunchy house drums, while "SMP" is a deliciously wonky, low-slunk chunk of lo-fi electronica that defies easy categorization.

  4. More Light (James Zabiela remix) (6:04)
  5. Color Me (Telefon Tel Aviv remix) (5:19)
Review: Bochum Welt's 2019 album "Seafire" was arguably one of the strongest full-length sets that Central Processing Unit has released to date, which given the Sheffield-based label's track record is high praise indeed. This EP offers fresh interpretations of some of the album's many highlights. First up is a perfectly pitched radio edit of "More Light" a gorgeous slice of IDM bliss that recalls the halcyon days of Boards of Canada, which is later given a slightly chunkier - but no less beautiful - treatment by EOD and a bustling, club-ready electro re-fix, complete with Yorkshire bleeps, by veteran DJ/producer James Zabeila. Elsewhere, the ambient mix of "G1" is as luscious and blissful as you'd expect, while Teflon Tel Aviv's revision of "Color Me" is opaque, sun-kissed and more than a little spaced-out.

  1. Loremaster (18:31)
  2. Shadow Over Thy Kingdom (16:55)
  3. The Fallen Ones (18:47)
Review: It's not hard to start picturing the kind of world Old Tower belongs to. Everything from the track titles to the sense of wonder and awe invoked through the use of choir voice lines forges a Middle Earth kind of vibe, making for a real adventure into vivid sonic territories that lie somewhere between ambient, drone and doom synth folk. It's not for the faint-hearted, basically. In many ways the sense of size is most pervading - tracks here sound as though they were recorded in a monastery, or ancient catacomb. 'Loremaster' arguably offering the strongest case in point, with its dramatic organs and pounding ritualistic drums. Matched with the spiritual grandeur of 'Shadow Over Thy Kingdom' and the sense of desolation and unease running through 'The Fallen One', it all makes for quite the trip.

Review: You may not be familiar with avant-garde composer Valentina Goncharova, but this incredible collection of rare home recordings is enough to answer any questions you might have as to how mind-blowing her work is. The sort of artist who needs to flee the Leningrad Conservatoire in order to have the space and freedom to fully explore ideas. Combining elements of musique concrete, drone, ambient and a kind of lo-fi classical, this is an expression of place - sanctuary of the home - and its ability to offer protection from creative oppressors. Using vocal mantras, curious refrains, amplified and distorted strings (cello in particular), you really get a sense of not only the where but the how behind these arrangements. Hushed but dense, they draw the listener in with surprising speed, so before you know it you're right there in that domestic studio watching a genius at work.

Review: Alba is the Spanish word for the moment when the first light of day appears, before the sun rises, and all things appear magical. Argentinian Federico Durand returns to 12k with music for dawn listening. His small and humble sounds of everyday life are crafted with simplicity, stillness and repetition - making music how children play. Alba features a cover illustration by reknown Irish artist Emer Tumilty.

Review: For his latest album as Atomine Elektrine - his first for esteemed Dutch imprint Winter Light - Peter Andersson has drawn inspiration from the Antikythera Mechanism, a real-life ancient Greek device that is widely thought to have been the world's first "analogical computer". The album's six tracks are as magical and mythical as the discovered device that inspired them, with Andersson cannily fusing layered field recordings and strange, spaced-out noises with swelling ambient chords, slowly unfurling melodies and spacey sampled noises to create audio collages that defy lazy categorization. It reminded us a little of some of the darker and weirder outings of the KLF during their brief ambient period (think the lesser known "Rites of Mu" and "Waiting" soundtracks), albeit with more intergalactic ethos.

Review: Given The Primitive Painter would go on to become Alter Ego it should come as no surprise to anyone that this self titled debut from 1994 still sounds incredibly polished, and manages to hit a multitude of electronic notes in one very impressive swoop - some melancholic, some otherworldly, others punchy and direct. Re-releases like this are enough to convince even the most cynical first-pressing militants of the value in re-releasing. Why shouldn't a new generation of heads be won over by the beautiful acid ravescape painted by 'A Pagan Place', the slamming toybox percussion of 'Click Song', the emotionally charged euphoric downtempo joy of appropriately-titled 'Hope' or the retro futurism of electro-stepper 'Levitation'? As essential today as it would have been 25 years ago.

Review: Pioneering ambient duo Global Communication were invited to rework the Blood Music album from Chapterhouse for this 1993 album, originally on Dedicated Records. It might technically be a remix album, then, but you'd be hard pushed to notice much of the original material left intact. Instead, in the hands of these two skilled sonic craftsmen, it becomes an hour long work over five tracks, various multi-track tapes and thematic embellishments that make for a whole new world of cinematic sound. Floating ambience is paired with slow and deep electronic beats to classic effect throughout, making it yet another masterclass from Mark Pritchard and Tom Middleton.

Review: Much has changed since we last hear from Gaston Arevalo back in 2013, when we were rather impressed by his "Rollin Ballads" album on Octav. Here the often-overlooked ambient producer delivers a fine belated sequel that was apparently designed as, "a themed albuk told through the lens of an expedition diary". In effect it's a kind of imaginary soundtrack, with Arevalo setting his impeccable musical movements - think colourful but enveloping ambient chords, swelling synth-strings, slow-burn electronic melodies and barely recognisable, processed guitar sounds - to atmospheric field recordings made in Patagonia. It's a stunning combination all told, with frequently emotive results.

Review: Takashi Kokubo makes archetypal Japanese ambient, new age and experimental synth sounds. But not only that, he also created the nationally-used mobile phone earthquake alert sound and designed credit card payment jingles that pervade all of Japanese society. His sound, then, is very much the sound of the Far East. It has been that way since at least this album came out back in 1985. It's a classic of the genre, hard to find and hugely expensive if you do. This full scale reissue sinks you into his world of distant chimes, eerie chords and spring-time soundtracking that is pure as ice.

Review: Hania Rani's sophomore album, hybrid neo-classical/ambient work "Esja", was arguably one of the most criminally overlooked sets of 2019. We hope that the same fate does not befall this equally as impressive follow-up, which sees the Polish pianist and composer offer up a suite of ear-pleasing tracks built around cyclical piano movements, crackly field recordings, layered vocalisations, heaps of special effects and just the right amount of ambient textures. Highlights are plentiful, with our picks including stunning opener "Leaving", drowsy ambient-jazz masterpiece "Zero Hour", surprisingly upbeat electronica song "Home" and the creeping sadness and late-night paranoia of closing cut "Come Back Home".

Review: According to the wordy press release that accompanies it, Affin owner Joachim Spieth's latest album - his third in total - was, "built by seemingly endless, sensitively interwoven surfaces," and, "creates curves of tension between immersive, melancholic and euphoric moments." The eight-track set is certainly atmospheric and alluring, with Spieth creating spine-tingling, mood-enhancing moments via waves of swelling ambient chords, opaque aural textures, ghostly voices and the kind of processed sounds more often found in drone releases. There are occasional rhythmical excursions - see the foreboding pulse and unearthly electronics of "Ultradian" - but for the most part "Tides" is the kind of enveloping, all-encompassing ambient excursion that's best appreciated while lying flat on your back with your eyes closed.

Review: To label this collection of sonic innovations 'ambient' kind of misses the point. Yes, the record quickly creates an ambience, but the genre itself usually implies a reliance on harmonisation and a heavy leaning towards futurism, or at least synthdom, whereas what we have here is something quite difference. Like listening to a full orchestra tune up, before diving into the forgotten culture of some long lost civilisation. 'Paper Tigers' is a case in point, jangly guitar refrains apparently suspended on a knife edge of complex noise. It's a contrast to both 'A New Story', the preceding opener that acts as gentile warm up, and the vocal collage of 'Ta Sha Si Le Ta', where harmonised voice lines combine to develop an air of intense but hushed atmosphere. Add twinkling sleigh bells and elongated strings of 'Golden Calf', and the tap-drop percussive tension on 'Interval', and you've got a real adventure waiting.

Review: The launch of the Love Record Stores project has inspired Mute to reissue each of Stefan Betke's first three albums as Pole on coloured vinyl. First-up is his 1998 debut album, "1", which this time round appears on navy blue wax. While Betke successfully refined his sound over the years that followed, "1" was where he unveiled his trademark glitch-dub style for the very first time. It remains a must-check classic: a hazy, insatiably crackly and spaced-out affair that re-imagines electronic dub as an otherworldly amalgam of ambient, electronica, sound collage, sample-heavy sonic textures and the deep basslines/echoing electronics more often associated with dub techno.

Review: Over the last few years, Geir Jennsen has been quietly offering up re-mastered and often expanded reissues of many of his most sought-after albums, including many that have previously never been released on wax. He's at it again here, delivering a weighty triple-vinyl version of one of his lesser-celebrated LPs, 2006's "Dropsone", which boasts seven previously unheard tracks and alternate takes recorded during the same period. Musically, it's one of the most unique sets in Jennsen's catalogue, in part because it mixes his usual ambient textures, chords and melodies with simmering strings, warmer melodies and - most notably - some genuine jazz rhythms. Whereas many of his albums are icy and otherworldly, "Dropsone" is positively sun-kissed and summery.
