Review: Even by contemporary crate digging standards, Imaginary Choreography is ridiculously obscure. It began life as a self-released cassette in 1984, and was created as an accompaniment to "study and exercise" at Italian dance schools. It was recently re-discovered in a Parisian flea market by one of the Antinote family, and here is presented on CD for the first time following a vinyl release earlier this summer. Heavily based around rolling, hypnotic electronic rhythms and synthesizer melodies, the album's six tracks variously touch on new age ambience ("Waterlight"), shuffling proto-Balearica ("Parallel Waves"), curious electronica ("Mollusk Dance"), and new age-influenced proto-techno ("In A Dark Run"). Amazingly, it still sounds remarkably fresh and futuristic, despite its' obscure roots and the cheapness of its' original production.

Review: With a solo discography that stretches back to the late 1990s, Mark Nelson AKA Pan American is one of Kranky's longest-serving artists. Much has changed since the sometime Labradford guitarist made his solo bow in 1997, but his ability to craft beguiling, otherworldly musical soundscapes remains. "A Son" boasts very few nods to his post-rock roots, with Nelson instead inviting us to drift through nine drowsy ambient soundscapes that sit somewhere between Jonny Nash's guitar-driven soundscapes, a folksy take on Americana and the slowly-shifting bliss of Italian pioneer Gigi Masin. It's an alluring and hugely enticing proposition.

Review: Rome-based Panoram is something of a mystery. Very little is known about him, and he's hardly prolific - in fact, this debut album is only his second release, after 2012's acclaimed (and now devilishly hard to find) Accents 12" on Scenario. The mystery is heightened by his scattergun approach to music-making; Everyone is a Door's 10 tracks variously take in warm, jazz-flecked analogue pop, Eric Satie style piano movements, quirky ambience, Boards of Canada-ish IDM and decidedly cosmic synth wig-outs. Throughout, there's an off-kilter, soft focus feel to proceedings that's never less than thrillingly atmospheric. Everyone is a Door, then, is an impressive debut album; expect to hear more from the mysterious Roman in coming years.

Review: Almost four years have passed since the last studio set from Pantha Du Prince (real name Hendrik Weber), a producer whose output has steadily shifted from club-focused minimal techno to more melodious, atmospheric and experimental electronic compositions. "Conference of Trees" continues this trend, delivering a ten track set whose melodious, otherworldly and alluring compositions were partly created using all manner of specially-created wooden instruments (some of which he hand built himself). While it's undeniably a Pantha Du Prince album - even with the assistance of wood-created sounds there is still a reliance on his usual electronic approaches - "Conference Of Trees" feels somehow different, more human even. Given the spellbinding results, it's a departure we approve of.

Review: Since bursting onto the scene via a series of bustling, bass-heavy and dancefloor-focused 12" singles at the turn of the decade, Pariah (AKA late developer Arthur Cayzar) has been surprisingly quiet. It turns out he was ridden with angst about the music he was making and unsure of which direction to take. As this long-awaited - and, we should add, rather brilliant - debut album proves, he's final found inner peace. "Here From Where We Are" is, first and foremost, a home listening album. It contains gentle, evocative and slowly shifting electronic soundscapes that largely look towards ambient, neo-classical, drone and dub techno for inspiration. There's no speaker-busting sub-bass explosions or riotous peak-time rhythms, just becalmed and stunningly beautiful compositions that are in turns spellbinding, melancholic and hugely poignant.

Review: Niklas Paschburg debuted in style with the moving "Oceanic" album on a !K7 sublabel back in 2018, and now he returns with more of his modern classical orchestrations. Very much in the vein of Frahm, Hopkins and the like, he deftly fuses beautifully composed orchestrations with electronic in subtle but powerful ways. On "Svalbard", the piano is front and centre a lot of the time, which lends the album a defined character. The album moves through a surge of different emotions from the taut (on "Cyan") to the scenic (on "Little Orc"), but Paschburg's deft touch on the keys remains the strongest sender. "Season Shift" is rightly an album centerpiece that tastefully balances occasional flourishes of electronica in amongst the classicisms.

Review: It's been a while since we last heard from Arthur Jeffes' Penguin Cafe, the musician's continuation of the Penguin Cafe Orchestra project established by his late father Simon Jeffes in the late 1970s. The Imperfect Sea is the collective's first album in three years, and offers a typically evocative and atmospheric collection of tracks. Stylistically, Jeffes junior has stuck steadfastly to his father's Penguin Cafe blueprint, offering intimate but expansive tracks that blend elements of traditional English folk music with neo-classical orchestration, global instrumentation, and nods towards both early ambient music and more pastoral forms. The results are rarely less than spellbinding.

Review: Given that Aleksi Perala has self-released a phenomenal amount of music based around "the Colundi Sequence" - a custom musical scale that boasts 127 frequencies chosen "via experimentation and philosophy" - it can be hard for newcomers to know where to start. We'd suggest this hand picked collection of project highlights, which is Perala's second such compilation. As you'd expect, it contains some seriously good electronica, IDM and ambient music, all with unfathomable titles. While largely positive and jaunty in tone, Perala finds space to include the ghostly, piano-fired bliss of "UKR74R1512020", the frankly chilling drone antics of "UK74R1407020" and the spaced-out techno paranoia of "GBBVT1337202".

Review: Producer Thore Pfeiffer first joined the ever-growing Kompakt family last year, contributing two wonderfully melodic, heady tracks to their Pop Ambient 2015 compilation. Here he delivers his debut album, the oddly titled I'm Blickfeld, in the process setting out his stall as an ambient producer to watch in coming years. His trademark sound is undeniably positive, offering a mix of cut-up acoustic guitar licks, hypnotic electronics, dreamy textures and occasional woozy, freestyle vocals. With Pfeiffer's fluid, classical guitar passages - run through all manner of effects units - takes centre stage for the most part

Review: Since establishing himself as one of British bass music's finest exponents of experimental dancefloor material at the tail end of the noughties, Matt "Phaeleh" Preston has gradually been moving towards the chill-out room. Like 2014's Sommus, Illusion of the Tale is an all-ambient affair, with Preston serving up tracks that veer from becalmed dreaminess and drifting coolness, to crystalline melodiousness, via the kind of deep space fodder that was once the preserve of German great Pete Namlook. It's hard to make genuinely brilliant ambient material, but Preston more than holds his own. As a result, Illusion of a Tale - smothered in atmospheric field recordings to enhance the trip - is amongst his strongest work to date.

Review: Stephen Hitchell is something of a veteran when it comes to creating spacious, occasionally claustrophobic dub techno soundscapes, having begun his career at the turn of the millennium. Here, the Eschospace and CV313 member dons the underused Phase90 guise - last seen remixing one of his own Intrusion productions - for a first full-length under the pseudonym. Those familiar with Hitchell's work should know what to expect, namely the sort of hypnotic, gently pulsing dub techno that makes great use of fuzzy textures, spooky field recordings, white noise and disconnected melodies. Typically, it's a hugely evocative and spaced-out set, with tracks like "Ango", "Dolor" and "Passus" - the heaviest track on the album - recalling Echospace's most blissful moments.
