Review: UK producer Calum Lee aka Paleman has just about made all styles of electronic music in his crater. He is a jazz drummer at heart and the freeform invention defines much of what he does. Here the 30D sub-label EyesHave It snaps him up for his latest trips into the unknown corners of the dance floor. He made the music specifically for the label and really stretches himself - 'Exalted' is a twisted rhythm with groaning leads and dark atmospheres. '25mg' is a frosty world of brushed metal and scuffed synths then 'Titan Siren' brings more expertly designed breakbeats that tumble freely as watery droplets fall from above. Two further cuts shut down this more forward-thinking of EPs.

Review: Perko is one of those newer-school experimental artists whose fingers straddle many pies, but who nevertheless refuses to allow this inner tendency towards versatility to hold him back. The FELT label owner has welcomed artists as far-flung as Civilistjavel! to Moxie into his inner circle; and the fruits of this open-mindedness are more than translated into his latest EP for Glaswegian dance legends Numbers. 'Prang' errs on the side of playfulness, giving some hot seconds of pure danceable flavour. Huerco S lends his usually-texturally-rich addprod to the nominal A-sider, a rather impressive future-garage-acid cut that recalls some of Objekt's earlier stuff, while regular collaborator and mournful vocalist-producer Cucina Povera crops up on the ambient dub plunger-into-the-sound that is 'Sisu'.

Review: Pole's 2022 album Tempus featured one particular track, 'Stechmuck' which was centred on the sound of his dying Minimoog. It's a tidy continuation of the faulty Waldorf filter which inspired his project name in the first place, and now Stefan Betke has taken the inspiration of his broken gear further by inviting a heavyweight cast of remixers to reversion the track. You might not have expected UK electro punk agitators Sleaford Mods to be crossing paths with German minimalist dub, but here we are and the results are incendiary. Elsewhere, Rrose delivers a textbook slice of writhing, tactile techno and Alessandro Cortini brings his grandiose synth expertise to bear on the track.

Review: After the inaugural EP from Berlin-based collective Melantonia by the label's co-founders founders Hanna Maria and Mattia Onori, together with Feral and Plants Army Revolver, they're back with the first episode of a VA series "exploring uncharted sonic realms". The results check in somewhere between techno and ambient, harnessing the best of both. So Andrea Cossu's 'Ossia' pulsates with a Geiger Counter beat reminiscent of early Panasonic/Pansonic, Simone Bauer's 'Halo' is like Plaid doing dub and Camilla Pisani's 'Schenk Mir Deine Trane' uses field recordings and the distant strain of melancholic melody, all three, like everyone here, creating something fresh and previously unheard.

Review: On their latest deep dive into the archives, Re:discovery Records has dipped into the vaults of techno producer Dietrich Schonemann, serving up selected tracks from two projects active between 1993 and '95: Portotype 909 (a trio that also included Jason Szostek and Taylor Deupree) and Facil (a collaboration with Abe Duque). Two tracks from the latter take pride of place on side A: the sparse, creepy, sub-heavy, ambient techno-goes-electro shuffle of 'Tree Frog' and the gorgeously sparkling, slow-motion IDM dreaminess of '700x7'. Prototype 909 is celebrated on side B, with the dreamy deep space chords, bustling breakbeats and psychedelic acid lines of 'Transit' being followed by the pitched-down TB-303 chug of 'Planet S' and the intergalactic IDM laziness of 'Same Place'.

Review: Re:discovery records are a 'chillout' techno label committed to reissuing lost gems from the 1990s and repackaging them for the modern listener. Their sound is downtempo and minimal, usually opting for more experimental post-EBMmy takes on the techno and electro sound. Emblematic of their focus is this new rerelease from Prototype 909 and Facil, 'Excerpts From 1993-1995', which slows many stock techno components down to a snail's pace; '700x7', for example, brings balearic moods to an otherwise bass-heavy kick-centric beat skeleton, the latter of which could otherwise have only come from the post-industrial bassweight that techno brought. 'Transit', meanwhile, is a pinnacle of acid trance. We advise you listen.

Review: Enigmatic collective PVAS return to Isla Canada with an exploration of the idea of gut instinct - 'Somaesthesia'. As always, the vibe is offkey, freeform and buried in equal measures of low end and tension. The title track sets a woozy scene with a smothering, bewitching atmosphere before things build up in a variety of strange ways... 'Dream Resumption' starts as a techno wriggler before taking a u-turn into breakbeat territory, 'Schlesi Boat' is a voyage into the vortex while 'Visitation' closes on an ocean of fractures. Both have prolific outputs and work diligently to push the boundaries of their respective instruments and previous musical ideas.

Review: LILA has got five or six albums of artful ambient dropping all in quick succession and this is a third from Ludvig Cimbrelius, who has dropped one under his Eternell alias, one as Abraco de Vapor, and one under this, his oldest moniker, Purl. He also works as Illuvia and with all his projects he has mastered the art of sonic daydreaming and musical journeying. Ancient Skies is a record packed with a more intense, textural, heavy style of ambient that builds tensions and in some places has subtle implied rhythms. It makes for an involving listen that is much more than simple background music.

And they very much foment their own unique musical language on Ancient Skies, an album that blends ambient, drone and space music into richly layered soundscapes that are constantly on the move. Each piece is meticulously crafted and suspense you up amongst the clouds, hazing on at the smeared pads and swirling solar winds that prop you up. It's a record that would work as well in the depths of winter as a bright spring day such is the cathartic effect of the sounds. Beautiful, thought-provoking and innovative, this is as good an ambient record as we have heard all year.

Review: Last October, acclaimed saxophonist Pharoah Sanders turned 80 years young, and his input on this album is testimony to the fact he has clearly aged like a fine wine. Not that this is to suggest preceding outings were anything less worthy than this collaborative project, which sees Sam Shepherd, the British electronic artist better known to most as Floating Points, write nine spectacular arrangements which are then performed by said brass legend, alongside The London Symphony Orchestra.
The results are spectacular, and wildly far-reaching, albeit firmly rooted in jazz with classical undertones. From the movements that made this final cut, some are whisper quiet and delicate to the point of risking breaking off if you were handling haphazardly. Others are booming loud, musical jumbo jets landing at the end of another great crescendo. Whether hushed or monumental, though, we can feel every note and bar of this masterpiece.

Complimented by gorgeous butterfly artwork by Valerii Bogorod, it's impossible not to fall for this intoxicating experience.

Review: Those renegades at Ilian Tape are back once again with another forward-thinking album of fresh and potent techno, this time from Packed Rich. His long player "depicts the journey of an individual traveling through a field of energy that connects different locations in space," we're told, and along the way, it warps space and time to leave you spellbound. Punchy broken beat drum programming, hyper-real synth lines and cosmic colours all bring this record to life. It's a psychedelic mix that sometimes sounds like an MPC jam amongst the stars, at others like you're in freefall through the cosmos and sometimes laid back, stoned as can be gazing off into the heavens. Review: "I would beg listeners both animal and human to allow these beautiful landscapes I've created in collaboration with Mark Nelson to sing and speak and weep for themselves. Please. Forget about words. Just LISTEN," says Kramer of this latest exploration of sounds less familiar. Meanwhile, Nelson quotes the legendary Arthur Russell for his take on things: "If I could convince you these are words of love, the heartache would remain but the pain would be gone". The Chicago-based composer and performer certainly summarises this listening experience. There's pure bliss running through these serene ambient, almost New Age-style tracks, but within that a certain reflective sadness. Crystalline melodies refract and develop, ebb and flow, at times making pure harmonies, in other moments more atmospheric refrains. They make us long for things that were or may be, although there's still space here for taking stock and acknowledging what is.

Review: There's no doubt that determined man-of-mystery Panoram has a unique musical voice, as anyone who checked his thrillingly evocative, impossible-to-pigeonhole debut LP for Firecracker, Everyone Is A Door, would no doubt attest. It's unsurprising, then, to find that this follow-up is equally as evocative, with even more musical reference points - skewed downtempo jazz, Balearica, solo piano pieces, vibrant synthscapes etc. - joining his usual liquid ambience, synth-doodles and immersive electronic moods. The album is nominally a meditation on "the nature of memories and reality", but it many ways the concept is secondary. At the end of the day, the music is magical, and that's all that counts.

Review: Gerd Jansen's faultless Running Back is back with another of its hard-to-define but essential albums, Keep Looking Where The Light Comes From, this time from Panoram. It is a record that blurs the line between chaos and beauty, with fuzzy synths and improvised rhythms offering up some intriguing sound designs and unusual textures. There is a psychedelic feel to many of those, but so too a dream-like quality where barely-there melodies and half-remembered vocals drift in and out of earshot. Both maximal and minimal compositions feature with nods to ASMR pleasures and a mix of synthetic and acoustic sounds.

Review: Don Peake's soundtrack for Wes Craven's : The People Under The Stairs now makes its first ever appearance on vinyl. The classic movie came in 1991 and composer Peake made a perfectly spooky and atmospheric score. Outside of this he was a guitarist and member of the Wrecking Crew who has also played on records by greats such as Marvin Gaye, Everly Brothers and John Lennon. His diverse range of talents really shine through here from the screeching moments on unsettling intensity to the broody passages of mood bulldog via the more serene moments of clam before the storm.

Review: Like its recent predecessor, List I, this all-instrumental affair is a collage style affair that sees its creator, Bartosz Krucyznski AKA Pejzaz, craft an immersive and atmospheric listening journey out a mixture of beats, electronics, and literally hundreds of samples from 1990s and early 2000s Eastern European CD releases. The Very Polish Cut Outs label describes it as 'an apt soundtrack for winter in Eastern Europe', and it's hard to disagree. Full of warming loops, dreamy pads and chords, gentle melodies and even more gentle hip-hop beats (albeit with sporadic bursts of percussive energy), it delivers a suitably Balearic, saucer-eyed voyage through instrumental trip-hop and dub-flecked downtempo flavours.

Review: Given his impressive track record - his releases have been championed by such luminaries as Peggy Gou, Shanti Celeste and Ben UFO - it would be fair to say that 'Reclaim', Pepe's first album since 2016, is hotly anticipated. It was apparently inspired by the idea of a 'human free future' where the Earth has been allowed to re-wild itself. With this concept as a reference, the album's blend of spring-fresh synthesiser melodies, summery textures, ambient-leaning soundscapes, sample-rich electronic experiments and dancefloor ready grooves (there are nods to ambient house, deep house, electro and UK bass) makes perfect sonic sense. More importantly, it's a hugely enjoyable album that stands out as one carefully considered, admirably executed piece of work. In other words, it could well turn out to be one of the electronic albums of 2023.

Review: Petteril aka James Gilbert has created a series of audio collages that muse on the notion of impermanence - the idea that living in the moment is all we really have, that those moments have no real beginning and end. That live has no value other than the memories we make. He improvises using several instruments - a mix of the physical, analogue and digital - and uses generative elements that all loop delicately and very much help you give yourself over to being lost in the music, in the moment, in the magic of life. It's a soothing listen that traverses various moods, always with an immersive design.

Review: Lithuania label Greyscale is up to a 29th full length here and once more it is a deeply moving journey. Phases of Gravity is behind it and serves up what amounts to an audio scrapbook that recounts a period in which the Hungarian artist conducted something of a rebirth. Anchorage then is a very personal work where the sounds are stripped back to their most distilled essence. It is always atmospheric in its fusion of ambient and dub with ocean explorations like the opener next to more weight and tribal drums on 'Anchorage and plenty of heavy human emotions in 'Thickness of Soil'.

Review: Japanese punk/avant-garde legend Phew's 'Vertical Jamming' was originally recorded at Phew's place in December 2015 and put out only on CD. Now it gets expanded across two sides of clear vinyl. The artist himself says that 'Cheers' and 'Encore' are basically sequels to 'Drone'. They expand on that already epic track's heavy and greyscale atmospheres as they skit through a series of alien vignettes. This is a truly rare treat for fans of this sound and artist and brings to mind a lo-fi and DIY take on Einsturzende Neubauten.

Review: American DJ, producer and electronic musician Evan Shornstein, AKA Photay, is perhaps best known for his work on labels like the uber-exalted Ninja Tune, highly respected Astro Nautico, and super-good Mexican Summer. And at times (well, on 2022's On Hold), he's worked with telephone hold music samples. Forget all that, though, because here he teams up with the similarly visionary-minded Carlos NiNo for a masterclass in atmosphere and laidback, slick, immersive tones.
It's hard to really put your finger on what's happening with An Offering. In some ways, it's contemporary classical, or at least it makes you feel like you're listening to an orchestra warming up, possibly playing incidental parts to augment some narrative playing out on an audibly large stage. In other ways, this is highly experimental business that occupies a space in a kind of instrumentally-unique ambient world. Jazzy, strange, ethereal, and utterly mesmerising.

Review: Arriving some twenty years after the last Pink Floyd album proper, 1994's The Division Bell, this new offering - which stands to be their last ever - apparently functions as both a swansong for their enormously influential outfit and a tribute to late keyboard player Rick Wright. Constructed partly from demos for the aforementioned album, as well as recordings from as far back as 1968, it somehow manages to showcase the closest the band has come to the classic Floydian sound in decades. Indeed, replete with Gilmour's soaring leads and ambient dreamscapes, it frequently recalls the heralded days of 'Wish You Were Here' amidst an atmosphere of beatific melancholy. If this is the moment that the rock giants choose to bow out, their legions of fans can rest assured they're doing so with both grace and style.

Past Inside The Present has now secured the rights to issue it themselves on a new CD. The tracks are exclusive contributions from each of the artists and have never been available anywhere before with 'Rasping Descend' by Pioulard, 'The Quiet Road' from Hotel Neon and 'January 18' by Viul. The rest of the tunes that feature on it have all been on vinyl, digital or cassette tape before now so this is the first time they are all together on one CD.

It is his first since the highs of 2015's 'Bayou Electric' and finds Pitre composing short piano motifs and feeding them into a generative computer program which then in real time convert them into microtonal electronic sounds. It results in an album of minimalism, with blurry chords and more detuned sounding notes that cut through the ambiance. Sounds decay and evolve, smudge and melt into one another as this warm and enveloping album unfolds with hints of sadness, loneliness and bitterness all found within.

Review: With Salt og Vind Pjusk retums from an eight year album hiatus. This release is also the first seeing Pjusk as a solo project consisting of Jostein Dahl Gjelsvik. Salt og Vind (Salt and Wind) is, not surprisingly, about the forces of nature and the contrast between the volatile and the existing. In a wider sense it is about man's inability or struggle to grasp the eternal and instead seek temporary fulfillment. Salt og Vind is Pjusk's 4th album for 12k and comes in with an urgency and drive not often seen in their work.From the noisy, atonal start to "Det som aldri forsvinner" to the lush, exotic rhythmic pulse of "Ordene som blaste bort" there is a breadth of sound from the icy sublime to the detailed complexity. Pjusk's sense of space and production, as always, makes Salt og Vind an expansive and deep listen.

Review: Perhaps slightly better known for his dancefloor-enlivening electro productions, this is actually the third full length ambient album from UK producer Emile Facey under the Plant43 moniker. He's been writing and storing up atmospheric synthesiser experiments alongside his dancefloor oriented output since his last ambient LP The Countless Stones released in 2020, and the eight tracks here are meditative, ethereal affairs, Facey carving out a beautiful set of vivid emotions out of crystal clear pure sounds and arpeggios rolling like gentle waves lapping at a shore. Imagine classic Tangerine Dream combined with the balance and poise of Global Communication and you're getting close.

Review: In honour of the launch of the "Love Record Stores" project, Mute has decided to make Pole's brilliant third album, "3", available in a special yellow-vinyl edition. That's as good an excuse as any to add it to your record collection, though the set's undisputed quality and stone-cold classic status is arguably more of a selling point. By the time he originally released it, Stefan Betke had successfully fine-tuned his spaced-out, minimalist electronic dub style. Combining hypnotic rhythms, some influenced by hip-hop and others by Basic Channel style dub techno, with deep dub basslines, opaque electronics and dusty, often glitchy samples, Betke used "3" to cement his reputation as a genuine sonic innovator. While all of his albums are essential, "3" is arguably the best of the lot.

Review: Astonishing, 22 years have passed since the release of Stefan Betke's debut album as Pole. Along with the "2" and "3" albums that followed in 1999 and 2000 respectively, it helped establish him as a producer with a defiantly distinctive, dub-fired sound: a brand of electronic minimalism that drew just as much on ambient and micro-house as it did techno and of course reggae soundsystem culture. Crackly, spaced-out, hypnotic and mind-soothing, all three albums sound as fresh now as they did when they were first released. Helpfully, Mute has decided to reissue all three at once via this box set. There are no bells and whistles, just three essential albums in a plain black box. If you don't own them already, you know what to do.

Review: Preston, UK-based Polypores (AKA Stephen James Buckley) is a great advertisement for just how fertile the North West England electronic music production scene is outside of Manchester, the region's sonic epicentre. Self-describing as "painting" sounds with synthesisers, suffice to say his a deep and patient aural world to step into, and one that reflects the rugged serenity of the region's stunning countryside. Multizonal Mindscramble is a case in point. With track titles like 'The Dream Incubator' and 'Machine Elves', it's clear these are computer sounds but made resolutely human through earthly and heavenly elements, gliding refrains, bubbling flourishes, and a vast, open feeling to arrangements. Naturally evolving, ebbing, and flowing, rather than being trapped in the regimented, hard-fixed loops and patterns that can often define output from musicians and their digital audio workstations.

Review: Since he first emerged on Diagonal a decade ago, Powell has been associated with abstract rhythms, hard-edged electronics, modular madness and fearsome experimentation. Piano Music 1-7, then, is something of a departure: a set that's as equally as inspired by piano jazz and neo-classical musical movements as fractured electronica and the Radiophonic Workshop. Of course, this is not piano music in the Nils Frahm sense - much of the actual piano motifs are delivered on lo-fi keyboards and synthesizers, while his fluid, attractive and ultra-melodic refrains come wrapped in studio effects and occasional electronic textures. A great example of this hybrid sound is 'Piano Music 4' - all alien electronics, woozy piano riffs and unsettling experimental intent, while the raw beauty of shimmering ambient number 'Piano Music 7' is simply sublime.

Review: Pretty Sneaky is an anonymous project about which nobody knows much of anything at all, though it has become synonymous with an image of a banana peel logo and self-released white label 12" EPs. We get more here, this time on Marionette. Marseille's Norman Levy aka Koldd has been enlisted as a collaborator on this one (the third time this has happened following his work on a couple of previous tunes) and it is a seductive mix of soothing sounds, laid-back atmospherics and gentle bird calls. This is slow-motion music for meditative periods of reflection and we love it.

He transformed them into dub versions, crafting a tapestry of sound, and each piece's form dictated its direction, evolving from heavy dub to delicate piano and synthesiser blends. Review: Daljit Kundi and Ludvig Cimbrelius have Indian and Swedish backgrounds but actually came together in the UK music scene and specifically ambient jungle. They set off to explore that world totters and did so with aplomb across several great albums and EPs. This new album was actually nearly done many years ago but was shelved owing to struggles with record labels. When Past Inside The Present heard it though they encouraged the album to be finished and so here it is. It's an emotional work which "attempts to represent a psychic darkness that is as deeply restful as it is ripe with creative potential." It's absorbing, beautiful ambient from a pair of real dons.

Review: Analogue synth spooks rejoice, Pye Corner Audio is back with further explorations of the sweet spot between nostalgic fuzz and circuit-borne futurism. Ghost Box is a spiritual home for Martin Jenkins' flagship project, and he continues to edge out the scope of the Pye Corner sound without derailing the fundamental atmosphere. On The Endless Echo, warm, pulsing melodics set to eerie keys abound, and there's a fine balance between gorgeous ambient atmospheric pieces and sinewy, danceable rhythms, but Jenkins manages to sound fresh and inspired even while reliably holding true to the overall project aesthetic.

Review: Martin Jenkins aka Pye Corner Audio has been a busy man. He ended a fine trio of albums last year with Entangled Routes, then dropped a live album on this label early in the year, and now quickly follows it up with yet another fine long player. Ride guitarist Andy Bell plays on five of the tunes and is a collection that comes heated by plenty of sun and coloured with bright acid psychedelics. Says the man himself, "I try to tailor my work slightly differently for the various labels that I work with, and this seems to fit nicely with Sonic Cathedral's ethos." He has sure done that.
