Review: Copenhagen label FELT welcomes back Civilistjavel for a fresh four tracker that builds on the success of the Jarnnatter album in 2022. It is another collection of fine electro-acoustic drones in the fashion of greats like Biosphere and has a trip-hop sojourn with Cucina Povera that is particularly interesting. Though leaning on dub techno in the past for inspiration, there is a less rigid take on genre in these tracks as various locations "in the Nordingra area of the Swedish high coast are exorcised and channelled through sound."

Jarnnatter (A Made Up Sound remix) (6:58)
Jarnnatter (Ossia Disoriented dub) (8:07)
Review: Civilistjavel's most recent album, 2022's Janmatter, was a predictably atmospheric and out-there affair that blended suspenseful ambient moods and melodies with occasional IDM rhythms and plenty of experimental chops. Here two giants of leftfield electronic music and experimental techno give their interpretations of the album, crafting 'remixes' based on stems from a variety of different album tracks. Dave Huismans dons his familiar A MAde Up Sound alias on side A, re-imagining Civilistjavel's work as a hybrid deep techno/dub techno/ambient techno epic - all densely layered ambient textures, deep and distant beats, and waves of effects-laden synth sounds. Ossia takes a different approach on his 'Disconnected Dub', delivering an immersive sound design experience built around creepy, effects-laden ambient chords, unsettling rumbles and echoing bleeps.

Review: Guangzhou, China-based artist and DJ Cola Ran tune sin to her inner reflections and global travel experiences when making music. On her debut EP she taps int the human experience to tell the tale of society's development over the years and blends traditional Asian and African instruments with modern electronics, field recordings and vocals to do so. It's a fulsome ambient, Balearic and downtempo brew with a gorgeous sense of melody and spirituality that offers a soothing escape. 'Riot On The Hush' is a lush tapestry of hand drums and xylophone-like sounds that rise and fall like a sea current, 'Outta Space' is the same vibe but with a futuristic cosmic twist. These are two of many highlights.

Ohm Alone (6:00)
Review: Fresh from bringing his brand of intergalactic electronic fusion to Nummer Music, Moonshoe Records regular Cousin (real name Jackson Fester) makes his bow on Naff. The Australian is in prime form throughout, offering up hard-to-pigeonhole blends of IDM, ambient techno and dub that were reportedly inspired by the expanses of bushland close to his home. He first explores the dubby end of IDM on creepy-but-beautiful opener 'Second Message', before joining the dots between energy-packed breakbeat, dub-fuelled techno and extra-percussive electronica on confirmed club cut 'Disting'. 'The River' sees the much-admired Aussie blur the boundaries between UK funky, dub and ambient techno, while 'Padda' is a picturesque and bubbly, eyes-closed excursion. Closing cut 'Ohm Alone', meanwhile, is a gently tropical shuffle through immersive ambient dub techno with nods towards the more experimental end of UK bass.

Review: Adam Craft is back with a second selection of his Renata Tracks. The first EP in this series came back in 2017 on Arsenik Records but here he lands on Phorma. Things kick off with the cinematic ambient of 'Pace' (Variation) which then becomes a deep and dubby techno roller in original form. Things stay well below the surface with 'Into Dust' which is another fresh dub cut that is rippled with frosty chords. 'I Only Said' is a traintrack groove that locks you into its linear rhythm and keeps you there for a lovely old hypnotic trip.

A long, drawn-out and emotive synth opens up on 'Home-schooled' and comes layered with bubbly pads and serve effects that soothe the mind. Then comes a rap mix that is detailed with louche bars and more 909 production to make it pop. Review: After the inaugural EP from Berlin-based collective Melantonia by the label's co-founders founders Hanna Maria and Mattia Onori, together with Feral and Plants Army Revolver, they're back with the first episode of a VA series "exploring uncharted sonic realms". The results check in somewhere between techno and ambient, harnessing the best of both. So Andrea Cossu's 'Ossia' pulsates with a Geiger Counter beat reminiscent of early Panasonic/Pansonic, Simone Bauer's 'Halo' is like Plaid doing dub and Camilla Pisani's 'Schenk Mir Deine Trane' uses field recordings and the distant strain of melancholic melody, all three, like everyone here, creating something fresh and previously unheard.

Review: Miss Nixon and Jacqueline Fuijkschot originally got together for some jam sessions in a sweaty attic circa 2015, and wound up with a track called 'Run' which ended up on a 7" for Das Ding's Tear Apart Tapes. Since then, Hivern Discs have picked up on the track and brought it out of limited-run obscurity to give it a full 12" pressing with some expertly selected cover versions. The original is a threadbare slice of melancholic minimal wave, but Cucina Povera thickens the sound into a brooding slice of ethereal dream pop. Celine Gillain's version is poised and raw, in keeping with her own excellent Mind Is Mud LP. Dania completes the picture with a straining, yearning ambient abstraction of the original.

Review: Performed by an ensemble sporting an intriguing array of instruments (harp, bass clarinet, flute, violin, pedal steel, piano, synthesizer and vibraphone included), Jefre Cantu Ledesma's latest album is a wonderfully drowsy and evocative affair full of drifting ambient motifs, slowly shifting melodic movements and gentle, blink-and-you-miss-them solos. The scene is set magnificently by 21-minute opener "Palace of Time", where effects laden instrumental passages meander across the soundspace to the accompaniment of sporadic percussion and a lone, operatic voice. The aptly titled "Joy", with its haunting clarinet refrain and woozy vibraphone melodies, comes and goes all too quickly before "Tracing Back The Radiance" offers a triumphantly blissful conclusion to a brilliant and beguiling album.

A haunting, gothic 11-tracker that revels more in cinematic beauty than abrasive sonic gristle, its standout pieces such as 'Woven Clouds' recalling the heartfelt studio masterpieces of This Mortal Coil or the mysterious blackgaze dissociations of Black Tape For A Blue Girl. Cosey's voice appears in crystal clarity, against utmostly gut-wrenching string movements and synthetic choirs of angels.

Review: Expanding on the ever-present fervour for classic industrial music, CTI's Elemental 7 lands in our laps, a reissue of the soundtrack to their 1982 film of the same name. Devastating and brutal sound effects are paired with haunting vocal performances on this two-suite clanker for the ages, while the accompanying video features cut-up video clips and dancing ghosts, while nods in the titles refer to seances and exorcisms. Don't pass on this one, as it's not just any old soundtrack; underwater worlds and vaporeal explosions make up its more unusual sonics.

Dorothy Carter only released a small handful of records, but Waillee Waillee has since attained a mythical status amongst those in the know. It's not hard to understand why from just one listen, as the lilting bed of zither and dulcimer forms a dense blanket of harmonious drone upon which Carter's voice soars with a choral serenity. It's stirring and spiritual, calling to mind the powerful effect of Laraaji's music but tipping more towards a folk tonality which makes the music entirely unique.

Review: Will Thomas Long's and Danielle Baquet-Long's magnificent album Celer is an alluring fusion of classic ambient and minimalism that comes steeped in a very real sense of romance. It comes with underlying themes of longing, melancholy, and nostalgia and begins with the sound of a train evoking a sense of travel. Throughout the piece, grandiose string loops alternate with various field recordings, creating contrasts between the concrete and abstract, the mundane and the exalted. Despite the epic feel of the string loops, the title, 'Engaged Touches', hints at intimacy. This powerful romanticism characterises much of Celer's work, making this another noteworthy addition to their growing repertoire.

Review: It's remarkable to think that for all the technological leaps that have taken place throughout time, for every instance in which someone has picked up something and starting making a noise with it, then turned said object into a formalised instrument, the human voice remains the most startlingly powerful tool in the musical box. Those who don't agree clearly have never met Sheila Chandra.
The pioneering Asian singer is rightly considered one of the most important artists of her generation. The work she crates is highly accomplished, and can stop anyone dead in their tracks. Then there's the whole glass ceiling thing, with the England she was born into a very different place for people of Indian heritage than today. Weaving My Ancestor's Voice makes it clear just how incredible a talent she was (now retired due to medical issues), with this vocal-focused collection nothing short of mesmerising.

Review: This is a reissue of the 1996 album by the British Asian singer Sheila Chandra, who commands wide renown among diggers for her fusion of Indian classical, folk and pop music. Abonecronedrone is a minimalist exploration of the drone, the continuous sound that underlies Indian music. Six tracks, each named after the drone sound they feature, 'Abonecronedrone 1' to 'Abonecronedrone 6', resound across its resonant body, recalling the almost mathematic way Indian ragas have historically tended to be categorised. Chandra's layered vocals glide across the top, drawing particular attention to some rather prominent harmonics, overtones and textures.

Review: Sheila Chandra's Zen Kiss, first released in 1994, was among the best examples of the British singer's many forays into contemporary international music. The twist is that most of the album is a simple yet striking a cappella, which plays out from start to finish, and is rarely accompanied by anything so much as a faint yet enchanting drone. With Chandra's interpreting songs from various cultures and traditions - including those of Indian, Spanish, Celtic, and medieval origin - she displays a remarkable vocal range in both pitch and stylistic breadth, ranging from the rhythmic to the ethereal and improvised.

Review: Mathieu Charbonneau and Pietro Amato are no strangers. The pair have worked together in various guises and forms for many years, first meeting in the instrumental group Torngat, an then turning their attention to the Ferriswheel project and indie band The Luyas. Amato is still a member of the latter, and some will also know his name from Bell Orchestre and, on the odd occasion, some outfit called Arcade Fire.

Cast all those references aside, though, because Synth Works Vol. 2, as the title suggests, opts to map out electronic courses through modular constellations, the sound of glittering stars passing by a pristine space station, the noise of humans looking out into the great black expanse and wondering what their place is, and where everyone else has gone. A work of minimal beauty.

It is full of the sound of analogue machines conversing and the artists themselves speaking through their darkened basslines or eerie pads. Occult worlds are crafted, ambient soundscapes are cooked up and leftfield cosmic explorations occur throughout a journeying album full of a wide range of emotions. This lovely record features guests on the odd track such as Johnny Nash on guitar, Cosmic Neman mumbling on 'Mange', John Cravache playing 'his special organ" and Bony Bikaye singing on 'Esika Molimo Ezali'. It's an occult world of left of centre sound that will keep you coming back for more.

Their excellent Yarns From The Chocolate Triangle is one of those albums that is tailored made for listening to on good quality headphones, a lush and world class ambient soundscape with vivid designs and bright colours all in high definition. All is calm at sea as you bob and drift on these roomy and magnificently realised sounds, mixing organic and electronic sources and taking a more gorgeosuly idiosyncratic route than the latest Orb album.

She crafts elegant and emotive music mainly using her voice and cello, plenty of effects units and draws on ambient for her inspiration. What results is atmospheric and intimate music that is utterly enchaining as this album on 4AD proves across ten tracks that come after she spent an intensive period studying Chinese dance forms. Lead single 'Echo' is a pop song about ancestral trauma that walks a thin line between respect for the past and the hope and freedom of a new future. It's captivating indeed.

This is certainly true of Maremoto, and the work of Francesco Pastaldi (Jean-Louis, Fantazio) and Olivier Demeaux (Heimat, Accident du travail) as Ciccio & 2MO. As wildly avant garde but compellingly listenable as you could hope for, it's been said they straddle a gap between psyche and industrial, but we say there's way more going on than just that. Their 2023 epic is certainly proof of this. There's something sinister and brooding yet instantly engaging and inviting about what's here, it's experimental yet instant when things need to be, highly complex but not in a way that distracts from the joy of tracks that range from a twisted kind of Bond-theme to wonderfully open classic live breaks, cacophonies of percussion and strange, strained stabs.

Intimate Embrace
Review: A new one from American ambient artist City Of Dawn (real name Damian Duque), 'Transient Lounge' is a short EP-length collection of soothing pieces aiming at a simple intention: a peaceful and healing atmosphere for the listener. The theme is apt, since the album's inspiration-striking allegedly came at a time when the artist and his family needed to get away and find space to adapt. The LP's natural blend of guitar, piano, space delays, synthetic pads, and field recordings - a rightfully well-trodden combo - forms an echoic journey into the heart of the human condition, perhaps recalling inspirations like Bvdub or Celer.

Review: Vince Clarke (Erasure, Yazoo, Depeche Mode, The Assembly) presents his first ever solo album, Songs of Silence. As the album title suggests, it's a lyricless (though not vocal-free) instrumental album, and unlike anything you might've previously heard before from Clarke as an artisan of dynamic electropop. Rather, this LP brings with it a comparatively sober ambient electronic beauty, its unique characteristics lending it a category of its own. But two self-imposed oblique strategies underpinned its creation - first, that the sounds Clarke generated for the album would come solely from Eurorack (a modular synthesizer format introduced in the mid-90s), and second, that each track would be based around one note, maintaining a single key throughout.

Review: Moving further away from the more direct techno sound he established as part of The Gods Planet, Claudio Prc has shaped out his 012 platform as an engrossing exploration of more experimental realms, even when strapped to snaking 4/4 rhythms. On this latest release, he's left percussion behind altogether in pursuit of an expansive two-part ambient suite which was originally performed at Up To Date festival in Poland last year. Clocking in at 25 minutes on each side, this is a meandering, engrossing journey which evokes the titular (Sardinian) waves Prc takes his inspiration from.

Review: Clouds Without Water is a project that came about after the chance meeting of two ambient experimentalists. They were both in attendance to perform at the same electronic music festival but came together over their shared love of Bristol Sound. Working over long distances and through the isolation of the pandemic, they sent tracks to each other "without plans or discussion, only wordless questions buried in the music." What resulted was this album, which evokes celestial dreams, moon-lit otherworldly landscapes and plenty of deep introspection. It is space music for spacing out to.

He turns out some of his best work here on the score for Significant Other which is dark and dense, unsettling and absorbing. The movie follows some rather sinister happenings that blight a young couple on a trip backpacking through the forest of the Pacific Northwest. This edition comes on nice blue vinyl and with a download code as well as a double-sided printed inset. It's a real collector's edition for sure.

Review: Ivan Pavlov aka CoH's new experimental electronic opus Radiant Faults makes a point of its creation deriving from the use of a rare new synthesizer, the Silhouette Eins. Developed by the artist Pit Przygodda, the Eins is the centrepiece of this album for good reason: it is a unique bit of gear, in that it uses real-time video signal as its carrier for sound synthesis. This direct interfacing of visual and auditory realms inspired a haunting praxis in Pavlov, who began the album as a means to commune with ELpH, one of the "celestial beings" first communicated with and summoned by the supergroup Coil. Pavlov continues what Coil devilishly started here, fleshing ELpH out evermore into whispery echoes and sinewy traces.

It comes at a time when a few of the seminal electronic band's record are making their way back onto shelves and we couldn't be happier about that. It has been specially remastered by Martin Bowes and comes on nice heavy vinyl for a fulsome listening experience. Musically, the album departs from the doom and gloom of previous records for a more upbeat sound but still with plenty of trippy invention.

Review: First released 22 years ago at the turn of the millennium, Constant Shallowness Leads To Evil has been described as one of Coil's most "mind-altering creations"; given the fiercely experimental and often otherworldly nature of their catalogue, that's some going. The album, which has now been fully remastered, was one of the first things Coil recorded following their relocation to Weston-super-Mare, and sonically it's as bleak, windswept, and barren as the town itself seems out of season. It's full of droning tones, modular blips, metallic melodies, slowly shifting ambient textures and musical motifs that lap in and out like waves. Furthermore, the album's standout moment, the near 14-minute 'I Am The Green Child', is like some mutant, experimental sea shanty crossed with a hypnotic ambient-industrial raga.

Review: Spanish modular synthesist and multi-instrumentalist Cecile Schott, aka. Colleen, has been prolific since 2003, and shows no signs of stopping for anyone. Through hypnotic synthwork and repetition, her latest 'Le jour et la nuit du reel' ('The day and the night of the real') gets at just one theme and one theme only; the sheer incomprehensibility of reality in its totality. Whether this is a theme we could glean from the sound of the record alone, we don't know, although it's certainly a mood that could be evoked by it. A whopping 21 original pieces of whirling, looping arpeggios and muted, tuned blips hears Colleen draw on every inspiration from old French adages to day-and-night cycles, making for an impressively impressionistic work of art.

Review: Icelandic musician Gunnar Jonsson Collider debuts on A Strangely Isolated Place with an expansive trip through six fictional environments, brought further to life through an accompanying video by artist Arna Beth. S.W.I.M. is an equal parts trip through space ambient and hauntology; 36 meets Pye Corner Audio if you will. Intense, low-centric 'Environments', 1-6, inspire hazily glimpsed vistas in the mode of ambient warmth. As if accidentally finding oneself witnessing celestial phenomena one isn't meant to witness - the space-trip from 2001: A Space Odyssey springs to mind - each of these tracks are almost like time-locked landscapes, slowed down by their lo-fi temperaments and subby pulses of feeling.

Review: Bridge Variations is a new and experimental folk album that mixes up traditional guitar playing with the found sound recordings of busy roads and dripping water. It makes for a living and breathing document with traditional Swedish sounds taken into the here and now in evocative new ways by Jon Collins. The title is drawn from the fact that the Stockholm archipelago is made up of around 30,000 islands with many bridged in between them and under which many of these tunes were recorded on his secondhand homemade nyckelharpa. Jonas Mekas's film Travel Songs is also an inspiration and influence here on what is a fantastic record.

Review: To say Michael Coldwell sounds like he leads an interesting life would be an understatement, based on what we know. Based in Leeds, UK, the man better recognised - by us at least - as Conflux Coldwell is an academic at the highly respected University of Leeds. There, he researches the hauntology of media - the recurring persistence of socio-cultural ideas, artefacts and other items from our past in a present form. He's also active in the Urban Exploration community, which relishes in any chance to explore manmade structures, often abandoned. When none of that's happening, he puts out the kind of music that makes Memorex Mori so special. Built from samples taken off a load of half-worn VHS tapes found in a dusty box at his parent's house, the sounds here are at times abstract, in other moments direct and rhythmic, futuristic yet wonderfully analogue, always ghostly, and often pretty menacing.

Recorded live in 2018, the album features two side-long pieces that showcase the duo's ability to create ethereal, abstract soundscapes with intricate arrangements. Throughout their collaboration, Connors' ghostly blue tones and Licht's meticulously crafted feedback and harmonic patterns have formed the core of their unique sound. At The Top Of The Stairs captures the duo's ascent through layers of atmospheric tension, punctuated by Connors' thunderous waves of effects. Connors and Licht have left an indelible mark on the experimental music landscape.

Review: Erland Cooper has always been concerned with the world around him, the Guardian dubbing him "nature's songwriter" as a result of his focus on trying to interpret Mother Earth through sound. Of course, she's not in the best shape right now, and even stopping to appreciate the smallest details of her mastery can often make us fill with dread and regret.
The fact that it's still not too late to change the future we've been ruining for ourselves over the past 200 or so years is also important to note. And it's this juxtaposition, between hope and hopelessness, dystopia and utopia, that seem to define this incredible collaboration between Cooper and the Scottish Ensemble - a live recording from a concert that really shows off the emotional power of classical strings in their most contemporary form.

It's a lush listen that very much soothes mind, body and soul with its widescreen ambient synth scopes, suspensory pads and painterly strikes of sound. Here's hoping this might be the first of many collabs if this is the sort of work these artists can cook up together.

It's easy to imagine the sun peeping through a canopy of leaves and branches on sunrise-ready opener 'The Great Sadness', while the sustained chords, drowsy sound design and reverb-laden organ notes of 'Orma' evoke mental images of becalmed woodland clearings at nightfall. While the concept may be loose, the music - and especially the sublime, slowly unfurling 'All Your Silences' and the bubbling, Pete Namlook-esque 'Los Alcornocales' - is magical enough to both follow the brief and work as an enveloping, life-affirming ambient masterpiece. In a word: picturesque!

It's effectively a series of "maximal" instrumental soundscapes with sounds so large and layered they rise above the "meditative" tag pushed by Mute's PR team. This is no criticism, though, just a reflection that while contemplative at times, one of the most joyous things about the album is Cortini's ability to build thrilling walls of sound.
