Roland Boutique SH01A Synthesizer (red)
Cat: 659964 Rel: 20 Nov 17

Synthesizer based on the classic Roland SH-101 featuring Analog Circuit Behaviour technology - red edition
Notes: The SH-01A is a meticulous reproduction of the iconic Roland SH-101, one of the most popular classic synthesizers of all time. Analog Circuit Behaviour (ACB) technology reproduces the SH-101's legendary sounds by faithfully recreating the actual behaviour of the original analog circuits, right down to the fine details and odd quirks that have endeared the synth to musicians and producers for decades. The SH-01A builds on the great sounds and creative immediacy of the original, now in the popular Roland Boutique format - offering exciting new polyphonic capabilities, inspiring new performance features, and a level of authenticity that could only come from Roland.

Beauty Through Simplicity:

The now-legendary SH-101 was a seemingly simple monophonic synthesizer launched in 1982. Unlike more complex synthesizers available at the time, the SH-101 quickly became popular for its characteristic tone and simple one-VCO, one-VCF, one-VCA, one-LFO structure. A legion of artists found it quick to program and adept at bright edgy tones and exciting sound effects. Its bass sounds are universally revered, and somehow any sound it produces always just fits perfectly in a mix.

More than thirty years later, the SH-101's hallmark sounds continue to be sought after by electronic artists the world over. It's a staple of vintage synth collectors and well-equipped, world-class studios, and now returns as the inspiration for the SH-01A.

An Inspired, Iconic Sequencer Revisited:

One of the most creative features of the original SH-101 was its 100-note step sequencer. Press Load, add sequential notes with legato and rests, and press Play. Easy. Designed to inspire through simplicity, the SH-101 sequencer has been the source of countless bass lines and lead melodies on legendary dance tracks. But the limitation of playing one sequence back at a time has been resolved with the SH-01A. Now you can save and access 64 sequence patterns, perfect for any performance situation. Recall any pattern at any time, and use the iconic sequencer to control your modular rig, hardware synthesizers, and software plugins via CV/Gate, MIDI, and USB. Let the SH-01A be the heart of your electronic instrument setup, on stage or in the studio.

Portable. Performer:

The simple design of the SH-101 made patch creation immediate, with sounds quickly forming under the movement of each key and slider. But that inspiring sound could vanish as quickly as it appeared due to its lack of patch memory. The SH-01A adds 64 writeable patches that can serve as presets for different tracks or quick starting points for experimenting with new sound designs, making inspiration only a button press away.

The SH-01A takes the original SH-101's portability and stage prowess to a whole new level. It's small enough to take just about anywhere, yet ruggedly built with sturdy knobs, metal-shaft sliders, and solid silver buttons like the original. It has several tilt options for easy viewing in various live and studio scenarios, and can serve as a low-latency, portable audio interface. In addition, it has a built-in speaker, and even runs on batteries. And when mounted in the optional K-25m Keyboard Unit, it can be used as a compact, all-in-one synth with 25 velocity-sensitive keys. With all this power and flexibility, you may be most surprised by the SH-01A's affordable price, which puts the iconic SH-101 mojo within reach of just about anyone.

A is for Authentic:

Original SH-101s are becoming increasingly rare, making them ever more expensive on the used market. Because of this, many have resorted to sample packs, hardware knockoffs, or software plug-ins loosely inspired by the SH-101. The SH-01A accurately recreates what makes the original so special, and the interface, while more compact, is 100% authentic.

The sound is vibrant and alive thanks to proprietary Analog Circuit Behaviour (ACB) technology, which carefully recreates all the details and quirks of the original hardware by modelling each analog circuit, right down to the component level. Face-to-face consultation with the original designers and relentless research beyond the original schematics provides meticulously recreated oscillator, filter, and envelope behaviour - a perfect foundation to build upon for a new generation of '101' fans.

Did You Say Polyphonic:

The SH-101 found its power in a huge monophonic voice for a wide variety of sounds. The SH-01A now has four huge voices, allowing for more modes to expand upon the original's sound palette. On top of the classic Mono mode, you can stack the four voices in Unison mode to add some punch to your bass and lead lines. Chord mode layers any four notes, and can be shifted up and down in semi-tone intervals. Poly mode allows for four notes to be played simultaneously, making the famous monosynth now capable of pads and chords.

Roland DJ202 Serato DJ Intro Controller
Cat: 660627 Rel: 20 Nov 17

Standalone professional 2 channel DJ controller with Serato DJ Intro software
Notes: The Roland DJ-202 is a forward-thinking Serato DJ Intro controller that gives DJs the features and layout of a full-size professional controller in a rugged and portable unit. The compact DJ-202 preserves the concept of the flagship DJ-808 and streamlined DJ-505, allowing unparalleled flexibility to DJ, remix, and produce beats on the fly while performing live or creating in the studio. With its large, low-latency platters, dedicated pad and transport controls, onboard sequencer, and mic input with professional vocal FX, the DJ-202 packs in the most features of any controller in its class.

Superior Portability for Discerning DJs:

The DJ-202 is a two-channel, four-deck controller that's powered via USB and capable of being transported and set up with minimal effort. Its compact, lightweight design and easy-grab handles allow DJs the portability they need for all types of events - mobile applications, house parties, club rocking, beat battles, and more. The intuitive layout of the DJ-202 and its plug-and-play connectivity will have you DJing in no time at all. And with 24-bit/48 kHz fidelity and Roland's high-resolution audio hardware, your performances will sound amazing on any sound system.

Mixing and Scratching:

Scratch and cue with confidence using the DJ-202's large, low-latency platters, which are the absolute best in its class. Dedicated Serato DJ Intro controls allow quick creation and triggering of hot cues, loops, and samples, plus switching between four decks with the Deck Select button. Use the channel filters or Serato FX (accessible via three FX Select buttons per deck) to finesse blends or accentuate scratches. And with dedicated Play/Pause and Cue buttons, you have the same direct control found on high-end controllers and standalone audio players.

Remix, Produce, Perform:

Use the TR drums or your own sounds loaded into Serato Sampler's four sample slots (with individual sampler volume control) to create the foundation for remixes, beats, and live performances. Program them using the DJ-202's 16-step sequencer - accessible via the performance pads - and then sync them automatically to your Serato library to create unique transitions, live remixes, or beefed-up classic tracks. Engage Inst-Rec mode for on-the-fly, real-time Serato Sampler sequencing, or use the MIDI output to fluidly sync any MIDI-supported external devices and instruments to your sequencer and Serato DJ Intro. For expanded production capability, upgrade to Serato DJ to access 32 sync-able sampler slots over four banks, the full collection of iZotope FX, software recording capabilities, and more.

The Roland Drum Machine Legacy in a DJ Controller:

From the TR-909's unmistakable hi-hats to the foundation-shaking boom of the TR-808, Roland TR drum machines have defined the sound of entire genres of modern music, from hip-hop, house, techno, and electro in the '80s and '90s right up to the trap music sound of today. Using Roland's patented ACB (Analog Circuit Behaviour) technology, the DJ-202 faithfully recreates the original sound of these machines, giving you the tools to create rhythm tracks using the same sound palette as the world's foremost musical icons. The DJ-202's expanded TR sounds include Bass Drum, Snare Drum, Closed Hat, Open Hat, Tom, Rim, Clap, and Ride, providing a wide range of options to create layered drum sounds and evolving sequences.

Bring Vocals to Life:

Add new life to your DJ voice, radio drops, guest vocals, or external instruments via the 1/4-inch TS mic input with onboard reverb and echo FX. Additional vocal effects include low-cut EQ to refine the sound and a noise gate to automatically clean up sound issues and unwanted background noise.

Presonus Quantum 2 Thunderbolt Audio & MIDI Interface
Cat: 665733 Rel: 20 Nov 17

22-in/24-out Thunderbolt 2 audio interface with 4 recallable XMAX preamplifiers
Notes: Taking full advantage of the high-speed Thunderbolt 2 bus and ADAT Optical I/O, the PreSonus Quantum 2 audio/MIDI interface delivers up to 22 inputs and 24 outputs, with extremely low latency. Boasting superb audio quality; 24-bit, 192 kHz recording and playback; recallable XMAX microphone preamps; and the ability to expand your system as your needs grow, it's a great choice for a wide variety of professional and semi-pro producers and electronic musicians.

Every design decision during Quantum 2's engineering was made with one goal in mind: speed. Quantum 2 sports high-speed Thunderbolt 2 connectivity and a no-frills, direct-to-DAW architecture, with no DSP. The result is our leanest, fastest, lowest-latency interface to date.

Cutting-edge 24-bit, 192 kHz converters with 120 dB of dynamic range and a surprising amount of expandability and software control options round out the package.

The Quantum 2 offers two combo mic/instrument inputs and two combo mic/line inputs, each with a digitally-controlled XMAX preamp and individual +48V phantom power. You also get four balanced 1/4" TRS outputs and a headphone out with dedicated volume control. But that's just the start. With ADAT Optical I/O and S/PDIF stereo digital I/O, you can have up to 18 digital inputs and outputs. And if you need even more I/O channels, you can stack up to four Quantum 2 interfaces via Thunderbolt to create a monster system with up to 80 in and out. BNC word clock I/O ensures your Quantum and other digital audio devices operate in tight sync. And of course you get MIDI I/O, too.

Audiophile-grade digital converters, low-jitter clocking, and recallable preamps add up to a superior recording and listening experience. The Quantum 2 operates at up to 192 kHz for ultra-high-definition mixing and recording. High-quality converters on every input and output provide 120 dB of dynamic range to capture complex musical harmonics smoothly and naturally with no audible distortion. And our recallable XMAX Class A analog microphone preamps deliver incredibly high headroom, deep lows, smooth highs, and a rich overall sound so you'll hear every breath, transient, and detail in your recordings.

With its pro features and abundant I/O, the Quantum 2 fits into any recording and production environment. You get four balanced line-level outputs, all of which are DC coupled so they can provide control voltage to external analog equipment. Add that to Quantum 2's expandability, flexible software suite, blazing speed, and superb sound quality, and you have a recording system that will be the heart of your dream studio for years to come.

With the Quantum 2, your audio interface is an integrated extension of your recording environment. The perfect companion for any recording software, the Quantum 2 comes equipped with Studio One Artist to provide you with a complete recording solution. As It Wasn't There EP (180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: ZMBR 003. Rel: 20 Nov 17
Minimal/Tech House
  1. Sahau - "As It Was" (15:57)
  2. AK41 - "The Man Who Wasn't There" (12:25)
Review: Romanian imprint Zimbru could hardly be described as prolific. In fact, this 12" is the label's third outing in three years. Fittingly, it features a track each from the two artists who graced their first two EPs. Sahau handles the A-side, laying down an undeniably epic, late night excursion that sits somewhere between the distinctive minimal techno swing of Ricardo Villalobos and spacey, ultra-deep house. Like the best Villalobos productions, it subtly ebbs and flows for 16 mesmerizing minutes. Over on the flipside Dan Andrei and Seban Goanta once again join forces as AK41, celebrating "The Man Who Wasn't There" via twittering birdsong, deep and rolling bass, ricocheting electronic riffs and impressively programmed percussion.

Review: Oliver Dollar - real name Oliver Siebert - has always been open to the idea of collaboration, with previous EPs variously featuring hook-ups with Jesse Rose, Jimi Jules and Chuck Daniels, amongst others. For "Loose Boat", a single-sided missive on Osunlade's Yoruba Soul Records imprint, the Berlin-based producer has joined forces with Crazy P main men Jim Barron and Chris Todd. Seemingly built around delay-laden samples from an old Marvin Gaye cut (but don't quote us on that), the track rolls along on a rich bassline and handclap-driven beats, with dreamy pads and impeccable electric piano solos only adding to the groovy, sun-baked feel.

  1. Paraiso '89 (7:35)
Review: Ari Goldbman has always been good at digging up and reissuing little-known gems, though this may be his most obscure and inspired find yet. According to his sparse sales notes, "Paraiso '89" was written and produced sometime in the "early-to-mid-'90s" by a short-lived Italian combo called Azura, but never released (for reasons that aren't explained). In fact, it actually sounds like it may have been created even earlier, such is the authentically loved-up, sunrise-friendly rush of its authentic Italian dream house flavour. It contains many elements frequently found in the best dream house tunes - think extended, spine-tingling ambient intro, whispered vocal phrases, bouncy pianos and huggable grooves - and genuinely feels like a long-lost classic. It won't hang around too long, so act fast to avoid disappointment.

Review: Having previously only appeared on WotNot Music in the past couple of years, K15 now slides over to Wild Oats to deliver a wholly appropriate slab of fluttering house romanticism rich in Detroit dreams and Chicago cheekiness, wherever the music might have been conceived. The cheekiness is no doubt most noticeable on "GWRH" with its homage to "Gypsy Woman", turning it into a fluttering Latino house jam, but before that comes the plush bump n rub of "The Story Of Her Life". "Insecurities" gets into a sexier kind of deep house funk, which "Gratitude" dutifully carries on until "Yellow" can round the record out with some largely beatless piano business.

Review: Last seen blowing us kisses on Pearly Whites, the London deepsmith touches down on White Peach with four fittingly juicy bass jams. "Wushu Hands" flickers with eastern instrumental elements over a tightly rolled jitter-prone kick/snare combo, "2 Worlds" strips us right back to our undergarments with only a spacious drum arrangement and groaning bassline to keep us warm, "Silence Soundboy" is a beautifully simple bassline affair where the low end is given lavish expanses of room to roam and mutate. Finally "Pablo" pays tribute with eerie cinematic textures, weeping lead lines and a wicked sense of unease. Sound.

Review: Although Satoshi Fumi has been releasing music since the dawn of the millennium, we're not sure he's ever made a better record than this first EP for We Play House. For proof, check A-side "Toriton", a fresh version of a 2016 cut that brilliantly joins the dots between 1990s Japanese deep house don Mr YT, British intelligent techno and the far-sighted sci-fi techno of fellow Tokyo resident Ken Ishii. If that wasn't enough to set the pulse racing, B-side "Lalalalaland", a Balearic-minded, piano-heavy dance through saucer-eyed dream house territory with added sunrise-friendly synthesizers, is arguably even better. In other words, you need this record in your life.

  4. TCB Band - "Children Of The Future" (3:53)
Review: Premier revisitations from hot to trot Parisian love station, the ninth edition continues to dig deep into the realms of the long-lost and highly collectable. The lead track, KIC's "Don't You Want My Love", for example, now fetches triple figures. Elsewhere SPG's "Loveland" is a fly-by-night falsetto funk shakedown while 24 Karat Gold's rare "New Love" struts with stunning string stabs and an energy that flares from zero to glitterball in two bars. TCB Band's "Children Of The Future" closes the sneaky session with a sweet harmonic hot chocolate soul. Blink and you'll miss it.

Review: Ultra Vybe remain deep in their Brunswick excavations with these two sublime cuts from the label's super troupe of session players Directions and their one and only album. Released 1976, OG copies fetch almost L200 and just these two tracks alone hint at why. Shimmering with a strong Faze-O feel with an evocative contrast of falsetto and deep baritone and twinkling instrumentation, both tracks swoon with everything that was so smooth and emotional about the label who gave the world Jackie Wilson, The Chi-Lites and Gene Chandler. Show some love.

  4. Woke (Justin Cudmore remix) (7:22)
Review: Turbo boss Tiga is up next for his esteemed imprint with new single "Woke". As you've come to expect from the man, this is yet another perfectly pop-inflected experiment in dance music, which employs a moody/electro influence and an all round neon-lit arrangement. Add to this his cheeky/risque vocal style and noir attitude. It also receives a bunch of killer remixes too. Portland based newcomer Vakkuum (who appeared for diffusion imprint Twin Turbo earlier in the year) delivers a dry and guttural lo-fi techno rendition, Spanish legend Eduardo de la Calle serves up a typically tripped out and tunnelling rendition plus New York City acid freak Justin Cudmore installs a much welcomed retrofit for the track. This is the Montreal legend's third release so far in 2017 and was recorded at Lost Star Studios before he returned to Ibiza for the summer. All killer, no filler!

Review: Nina Kraviz was clearly a fan of Volruptus's debut 12" on BBBBBB, because she's releasing the follow-up on her Trip label. As with its' acclaimed predecessor, Hessdalen is jam-packed with bustling, floor-friendly electro inspired by deep space and produced in Reykjavik. The title track races along at quite a lick thanks to bustling beatbox drums, rumbling 808 bass and bleeping melodies, while "We'll Be Alright" sees the publicity-shy producer reach for the TB-303 on a deep, woozy and intergalactic IDM shuffler. You'll find spacey dub influences bubbling to the surface on EP highlight "Time Travel", before closer "Alien People" sees Volruptus celebrate the "braindance"-era Rephlex catalogue with the assistance of ragged acid lines, dreamy chords and high-octane machine drums.

Review: Doc Daneeka's Walk Man series, launched earlier this year with little fan fare or publicity, has quickly become a reliable source of attractive, sample-heavy club jams. As you'd expect, there's more no-nonsense gold on this fourth volume. "Cloud Break" and "Fly Away" both make merry with chopped and looped samples from classic disco cuts, with the producer underpinning them with bustling new drums that don't strive too hard to beef up already heavy grooves. Closer "Ur Salvation" goes in a slightly different direction, layering filtered string sweeps and dewy-eyed easy listening instrumentation over a bustling, UK-funky influenced drum track. Perhaps the real highlight, though, is sparkling XXXY collaboration "Don't You", a deliciously positive and melodious fusion of dream house textures and cowbell-heavy tropical house beats.
