  3. Grotesque Studiado (7:42)
  4. Trexroar (9:03)
Review: Amin Ravelle returns with his fifth outing to date, another highly calibrated minimal techno experiment that takes inspiration from both the German and Romanian traditions. Much like the likes of the Slow Life imprint, these tunes are effective bullets to deploy through the sound system, wherever you may be. "Intrus Detectat" is a cold, calculating glitch of beats and precision-cut bass forms, and "Pan Integrista" steps a few places further out into the ether thanks to moodier, more cavernous set of background sonics. "Grotesque Studiado" is eerie in all the right ways, blasting out more complex sound patters, leaving "Trexroar" to lift the lid and unleash the deadliest of beat patterns. More Sobriquet, please.

  2. It's Over There (Balza 1.2 remix) (7:36)
Review: Originally released in 2014 with a whole plethora of remixes, Robotnick's "It's Over There" finally sees the light of wax with two of the best versions from the series; Manuel Perez brings the psychedelic sweeps closer to the fore while laying down a whole new slew of keys and dreamy chords while Balza adds a mystic melodic techno hum that rises with church-like stateliness that's sombre yet uplifting, deep and heavy. Grab it while you can.

  1. Round 2 Reel 1

  3. Round 2 Reel 3
Review: Dana Ruh is best known as a figurehead for the mighty Brouqade, but she's equally found on many other labels in the mean time. On this occasion she's brought her distinctive, heavy grooving style to Autoreply for an examination of the artistic process in the shape of one jam, three ways. "Round 2 Reel 1" is the funkiest of the lot, using some killer swing and vibing chords to make for an upbeat, infectious yet still nicely kinked sound. "Round 2 Reel 2" takes things into a more intricate, techy headspace where snaking rhythms interlock with pockets of synth abstraction. "Round 2 Reel 3" continues that theme into a rich, exotic forest of mechanical tones for the adventurous techno trippers to zone out on.

  1. Seven Nation Army (Grant Phaboa remix) (4:17)
  2. Humankind (Grant Phabao Tuff 'N Uff Skank Starring The Lone Ranger) (4:05)
Review: Legendary dub-minded editor Grant Phabao gets busy with Tru Thoughts' most distinctive vocalist and songwriter Alice Russell. First up, her famous cover of White Stripes' "Seven Nation Army". Taking it even further away from the bassline-driven source, if you didn't know it was a cover you'd think it was an original. "Humankind" sees Grant digging into Alice's now ten-year-old second album and switching out the original's nylon-string flamenco fire for a dancehall shaker complete with gravelly hype toasting. Once again, it's so well executed, it's like a whole new original. A seven nation army can't hold us back from this one (sorry).

  1. Huracan
  2. Albatross
  3. Maria (feat Pascale)
Review: Sainte Vie has been working away in the Mexican underground for some time, running Akumandra as a free, digital-only label to help promote all kinds of electronic music. Now it's time for Vie to step up with their first outright release, first time on wax, and hence a new era for the label. The tone is varied across the record, leading in with the worldly drum rattle and string strum of "Huracan", a whirlwind of drama and hand-played musicianship that stands out from the crowd. "Albatross" is a more introspective cut that brings Vie's vocals to the forefront, and then "Maria" chills things out further with a haunting vocal from Pascale and some delicate finger picking guitar delights over a dynamic set of drums.

  1. Komon & Will Saul - "Positive" (5:28)
  2. Gerd - "Echoes" (6:14)
  3. Juxta Position - "Glider" (6:17)
  4. Primitive Trust - "Little Love" (Floorplan Stripped mix) (7:12)
Review: Inside Out is a brand new series from Aus Music label head Will Saul. It invites DJs and producers to blur the boundaries between traditional artist albums and mix compilations. The concept encourages them to showcase their own music, or the music of those in their own individual circles. Depending on who is curating, it will take different forms. The idea stems from Saul's own approach in the club, which often finds him seeking out brand new and unheard music to play for the first time. There's a strong Detroit techno aesthetic throughout his inaugural release for the series: from the emotive hi-tech soul of his own collaboration with Komon entitled "Positive", Amsterdam legend Gerd had no problem channeling similarly timeless retro vibes either, as heard on the funky techno-soul of "Echoes". They save the best for last on the flip, with the legendary Floorplan's riveting rendition of Primitive Trust's "Little Love" - perfect to get that 3AM style strobe-lit tunnel vision in effect.

Review: Central Processing Unit chief CP Smith is keeping tight-lipped about the identity of the shadowy producer(s) behind the Secret State project. Smith describes this debut EP as "an attempt to rise above the all-pervasive, vacuous, decaying culture." We'll let you judge whether the men or women of mystery have succeeded in that aim, but we certainly think it's a fine EP. By CPU standards, it's a rather eclectic affair, flitting between druggy, arpeggio-driven alien funk ("CIA UFO Google Search"), ghetto-tech influenced deep electro (the wonderful "De-Pattern"), sparkling dacenfloor electro positivity ("The Sleep Room") and glistening, bass-heavy techno/proto-house/deep house fusion (sublime closer "Weep For Joy").

Review: Having previously appeared on Vibraphone with the Isole Del Tramonto 12" back in 2016, Nick Anthony Simoncino returns to the perennial Italian deep house label with a full album, his fourth following previous turns on Thug, Mathematic and Creme Organization. As you would expect, Mystic Adventures is a masterclass of classic drum machines and synthesisers, loaded with the passion and mystery that Simoncino has always managed to imbue his music with. The highlights are too many to list - if you're familiar with his other work, then Simoncino has everything you need on this LP. If you're not already wise, these nine new tracks are a wonderful introduction.

With a full album ahead (the follow-up to her 2009 debut Gizelle Smith & The Mighty Mocambos), this 45" keeps us sweet in the meantime. Both upbeat contemporary funk jams; "Dust" is a beat-heavy throw-down with strong backing vocals, tight fills and serious drive from Gizelle who leads from the front while "Hey Romeo" ups the tempo with strong focus on the lolloping bassline, surging vocals and fast-lane spirit. Funk dynamite; there's no better label for Smith to be flexing on right now.

Review: Previously, Los Angeles re-edit specialist Dino Soccio has operated under the Only Children alias, serving up filter-heavy, house-fired reworks for Razor 'N' Tape and Nurvous. Here the fast-rising DJ/producer branches out on his own via the new Pleasure of Edits series. There's a brilliantly no-holds-barred feel to opener "Stop", a chunky and full-throttle interpretation of a quirky, arpeggio-driven gem that incorporates elements from boogie, Italo-disco and Moroder-style Euro-disco. There's a similarly quirky feel to the delay-laden, left-of-centre electrofunk shuffler "Tough", while flipside "Sharpflavor" pitches up and toughens up a seriously druggy chunk of Munich Machine style electro-disco sleaziness.

Review: Having regularly appeared on Junk Yard Connections and Banoffee Pies over the years, Adam Stromstedt has plenty going on, but he's also got the time and space for his own Lyssna label, and he returns with his first solo EP on the label. It's an accomplished record, mining the vibe of ambient techno and channeling it into contemporary production with soul-stirring results. "TST142" is a mellow groover with a trancey undercurrent, while "Reptile Boogie" swerves into blissed out electro for lazy days. "Green Room Therapy" places plaintive keys at the front of the mix and channels a little of Floating Points' magic, and then "Split Tongue" offers up the most overtly club-minded jam on the 12".

Review: Tagged as 'juke', Surly's second release to date is much more grounded in jazz and hard bop. The Polish newcomer has impressed with this release so far, taking traditional visions of the genre onto new and exciting territories that have been explored only superficially over the last decade. What is most special about the tunes on Trip To Warsaw is how genuine they sound and feel. For most wannabe jazz musicians, the vibe can feel a little forced at time, but Surly's methods of instrumentation feel as natural around drum machines and synths as they would do around a 5-piece band with brass, piano, bass and wind instruments. This really is a trip in every sense of the word, and it might just well be the release of the month from us. Warmly recommended.

Review: Following up great releases by Jack Pattern and Hansen Windisch, Lustpoderosa now presents Leipzig based kosmische-kraut-punk live act Syncboy - who is said to have recorded these tracks live at an infamous squat in Zurich. From stunning melodic ambient journeys such as "Stolpern" through to slow burning psychedelic epics like "Green Market" or "Kiss An Elephant" respectively, or the po-faced cold wave inspired closer "Waterfalls". Recommended for fans of Vactrol Park, Vermont or Benedikt Frey. The German producer sure has a diverse repertoire musically and we're certainly intrigued by what Bodo Hansen has in store next for 2018.

  2. Booty In The Jungle (6:16)
Review: Depending on your viewpoint, crafting a bustling electro-breaks smasher out of a prominent sample from an old Spandau Ballet classic (as previously gripped by P.M Dawn) is either cheeky genius or cheesy silliness. In the case of "Deja vu Bass", the Textasy and DJ Dij'ital collabration that opens up this latest Dolphin Traxx 12", we're inclined to think that it's the former. Put it this way: the track is not only brilliantly put together, it's guaranteed to get a great response if dropped at the right time. Over on side B, Textasy goes solo for "Booty in the Jungle", a pleasingly no-holds-barred tribute to early jungle that's skittish, squelchy, bustling and occasionally pleasingly tuneful.

Review: Out of thin air, the mysterious Tokyo Ghost debuts with a killer four-tracker on his own, newly found label, and the vibe is very much on the looser, more organic end of the spectrum. "Tokyo Ghost" is re-treated and re-manipulated four times, across two sides of vinyl, and it's very much clear that this is a dubwise affair from start to finish. Airy swarms of ambience fill the spaces left open by the jittery, off-kilter percussion that swerves to the rhythm. This is the techno we like to hear. Full-bodied, filled with organic textures, and utterly ready to cause havoc on the dancefloor.

Broken Beat/Nu Jazz/Nu Soul
  1. Track 1 (6:36)
  2. Track 2 (6:55)
Review: This tasty 12" sees Italian crate diggers Twice and Volcov each have a go at reworking a 1979 jazz-funk workout from one of krautrock's lesser-celebrated outfits. The original - which, in case you fancy looking it up, isn't actually called "Tomah" - is a brilliant fusion of Brazilian influenced rhythms, sparring electric piano solos and relentless bass. Twice's A-side version maintains the essence of the original, expertly rearranging and extending the various solos to create a mind-altering chunk of breathless dancefloor bliss. Volcov takes a slightly different approach on the flip, turning it into a rolling samba-house groover complete with fluttering clarinet solos. Both versions are superb, and sound like summer anthems in the making.

Review: Trawl through Glenn Underground's vast discography and you'll frequently come across sought-after gems ripe for the reissue treatment. That appears to be what Italian reissue specialists Groove Records has done. GU Archives first appeared back in 2000, and bundled two hard-to-find tracks from the acclaimed Love & Hurt triple-album with the (then) previously unreleased "HardTymes" (a particularly breezy, jazzy, sun-kissed and musically rich chunk of bossa-house blessed with some particularly special vibraphone style solos). 18 years on, the EP has lost none of its sparkle, with the "Elle"-goes-Chicago deep warmth of "Stringing Me" and impeccably spacey and shimmering "Storm Raiders (Tribute to Larry Heard)" standing out. Simply essential.

Review: Villee is making a first appearance here on Pressed For Time, but you'd be forgiven for thinking these tracks were unearthed from the vaults of a 90s mainstay like Larry Heard or Cajmere. "The Inventor" has a crooked swing to it that could only come from an MPC, while the dusty samples and buttery bassline are pure vintage deep house goodness. "Night Walk" is delightfully looped up, keeping things simple and maintaining the depth in the process. "In House Cafe" amps up the funk a little, putting plenty of weight on the bottom end, and "Push It" taps into the sort of heady moodiness you'd expect from Kenny Dixon Jr.
