Mcoolaid EP (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: WS 022. Rel: 19 Mar 18
Deep House
  1. Mcoolaid
  2. Fuego
  3. Techmoreno
  4. Techmoreno (Alejandro Paz remix)
Review: Ricardo Medina has popped up intermittently through the years as a wielder of hefty deep house, and so it goes on this new 12" for Wonder Stories. Take snappily titled "Mcoolaid", where the synths ping out bright and bold while the acidic bass and slamming drums keep the pressure at a constant peak, or the dark and nasty throb of "Fuego". Medina means business, and he's unabashed in his aim towards the big room peak time tech house crowd. "Techmoreno" keeps up the intensity, which gives Alejandro Paz the necessary ingredients for an equally smoking remix for the crafty jackers out there on the floor.

  4. Somewhere (5:17)
Review: Fresh from 96! Club U Nite returns for the first time in 18 years with some impeccable US garage vibes. "Down On Me" is a celebration of one of garage's most golden moments. All warm bass, jazzy organs and an insatiable chugging rhythm, it's so good it stretches across two versions. "In A Jazzy Mood" is a previously unreleased sprightly jacker that lives up to its name consummately while "Somewhere" twinkles with a deep, restrained touch. Sweet shuffles all-round, this is a re-launch worth paying attention to.

  4. Tuto Bay (3:32)
Review: After two 45s on Les Disques Bongo Joe, Dutch Afrofunk space cadets make their debut on Soundway with their first full EP. Hurling all their roots and inspirations into a heady, bewitching brew of west African, Columbian, Caribbean, Latin and all-round cosmic fusion, the results are four slabs of world funk gold. "Down In The Basement" updates highlife styles with a salubrious big-bottomed disco twist, "The Opposite" ups the tempo with a little more cumbia charm while "Continue The Fun" adds a dub mentality to the mix as we're chugged to oblivion with heads down introspection. Finally "Tuto Bay" closes somewhere on a Cuban beach with rum-warmed harmonies. Beautiful.

Review: Having initially snuck his jams out in the early 90s as Memphis, Paul Williams has been around longer than most and his excursions into ambient music are definitely worthy of attention. As well as a 12" on Mirror Zone, this release marks 24 years since we last heard from Memphis and it's startling how relevant the sound is now. It's dated for sure, but only in the same way as much of the music you'll hear our favourite deep digging DJs reach for. There's a heady, trancey pulse to these productions, but without any naff strings or cheesy leads - this is proper trip-out box jam business from an unsung champion.

  1. Start Get Yo Self (8:18)
  2. Generation House (6:24)
  3. No Bullshit (7:47)
Review: It would be fair to say that no other artist is quite as associated with Bass Culture Records' "Limited" offshoot as Mihai Popescu AKA MP. In fact, since the series' inception in 2016, he's provided all but one of the releases. Thanks to this latest 12", that remarkable record stays in tact. The Romanian producer explores his more positive side on opener "Start Get Yourself", a clever combination of sweaty, jacking machine drums and fluid, watery and downright dreamy electronics that runs for eight mesmerizing minutes. Flip the disc, first for the deliciously bass-heavy and bumping "Generation House", where jazzy electric piano motifs rise above a swinging rhythm track, and then the early British tech-house lusciousness of "No Bullshit".

Review: Shimmering slow-mo soul from Berlin's Luca Musto. Smoky, unhurried and loaded with delicate emotion, it's another Balearic motherload as we're plunged into foggy trumpets and jazzy swirls on "Let Me Down", immersed in whirling reverse tones and dusty Bonoboesque haziness on "Once Upon A Grind" and taken on a bluesy one-way trip to Norway on "Parabel". Loire's deep chug remix seals the deal. Stunning.

Review: Turkish producer Mutlu San steps up to Lessizmore as yet another example of the Belgian label being incredibly on-point when it comes to signings. The emergent talent from Istanbul has a luxurious sound that taps into the minimal vein while offering a richer spread of textures and moods than your average micro roller. "Deep Sea Mosaics" is certainly a highlight, and it's left to Tolga Fidan to do the reducing on his remix of the track. "Phylum" sees San team up with his production partner in Bartaub for a more linear beat track, but with "Subglacial Funk" he nudges a little more of that unpredictable magic into the mix without losing the dancefloor essence of the track.

  6. Aulnay's Tears (3:10)
Review: With releases on 22a, Beat X Changers and Wolf Music, Bradley Zero is very pleased to welcome Neue Grafik onboard his revered imprint. The record itself paying homage to the Parisian house dance scene, while taking cues from the broken beat sound of London - like on the emotive slo-mo soul of "Innervision" feat Wayne Snow or "To Peckham Rye" which definitely takes its cue from Kaidi Tatham. We particularly enjoyed the very Three Chairs influenced deepness of "Dance To Yemanjaor" and the the ruff 'n' dusty MPC jam "Why You" reminiscent of Motor City Drum Ensemble's Raw Cuts series. The tracks are largely sample based, but also employ much more live instrumentation than in previous productions.

  1. Space Is The Place (8:02)
  2. Cyborg Dance (5:30)
Review: The origins of American act Newcleus lay in a 1977 Brooklyn DJ collective known as Jam-On Productions, including Ben 'Cozmo D' Cenac, Monique Angevin and her brother Pete - all teenagers and still in high school. The foursome named their group Newcleus as a result of the coming together of their families. Originally released on T.K. Records' Miami bass/freestyle subsidiary Sunnyview in 1985, "Space Is The Place" is an underground classic to those in the know. With its obvious robotic influences from the early '80s Bronx breakbeat sound, to the funk and synth pop crossover of "Cyborg Dance' on the flip - this is a true zeitgeist of one of the most exciting times in electronic music's history.

Review: Be prepared for some mega-dystopian electro whenever new wares from New Flesh arrive in. Umwelt's esteemed imprint now presents Budapest's Balazs Semsei aka Norwell who dives into the realms of '70s cosmic music. He's also a co-founder of the Farbwechsel label. On Geometric Vision EP, the A side title track or "Deadly Maneuvers" sits somewhere between Antony Royther's offword futurism or Miss Kittin & The Hacker's perverse 313 exploits from the early 2000's. A more blatant tribute to the latter on the flip, with the track "Conversation Patterns" channelling that Gesamtkunstwerk era of Dopplereffekt - but it's the ultimate form of flattery right.

Review: French veteran David K serves up some fantastic remixes on Tone Series, which he's run with Edouard Morin since 2016. It brings together the idea of interdependence between music and design: what colour follows on from music and, in return, which musicality comes out of a colour. This edition comes with some remixes by some right legends of the scene. Mosaic boss Steve O'Sullivan serves up quite a surpsie on his funky, sexy, swing-fuelled rendtion that'd make even Varhat or Mulen step up their game. On the flip, fellow Frenchman Cesar Merveille (Roche Madame) serves up a sweet take on "Friends" which is a bumped-up and glitched out minimal/tech-house version that's perfect for the afterhours.

Now they've got Matteo Taberna aka Topper with scene legend Daniele Papini (Sleep Is Commercial) in for this fine EP. Beginning with the entrancing locomotive shuffle of "Goldeador" which you could imagine Topper himself playing on a Sunday night aboard the Hoppetosse - it is quite unlike anything we've previously heard from either producer. On the flip, they take things deeper into the afterhours on the on the smooth headiness of "The Lost Ching". The results are in - Italians really do it better!

Review: We're not sure who's behind these extended Turkish funk and psychedelic pieces but we're glad they've come into our lives. Heavily dubbed and spaced out, each cut casts a heady spell; "Aycicegi" is a low-riding, loose-stringed sleazy funk slice, "Biz Burdayiz" is a nodding cosmic slop of chugging beats, strange acid melts and breathy voice clips while "Gunesi Kesin" closes the show on the slinkiest walking bassline imaginable. Looking forward to the second volume....

Review: There's little info out there about the identity of those behind the Pantamamba project. It would be interesting to know who's responsible, though, because this debut 12" is really rather good. The general idea is the fusion of electronic sounds and drums - think dream house chords, classic New Jersey deep house bass and, in the case of sweaty closer "SLXSA-42", ragged TB-303 acid lines - with live percussion and instrumentation borrowed from various traditional forms of South American and Asian music. It's not a wholly unusual idea - others have a made a career from such fusions - but rarely has it been done in such a giddy and thrill-a-minute way. As debut EPs go, NK Experience is certainly one of the more intriguing we've heard in recent times.

Peak yacht funk with all the lavish production flourishes of the era, and strong traces of jazz, each cut stimulates: "Melodies Of Love" is all about the falsettos and Balearic charm while "Walking In The Rain" is a sultry sax-blaster with some of the most powerful bass walks Beggars Banquet ever pressed. Review: Miguel "Pional" Barras returns for the first time since the release of his excellent debut album, When Love Hurts, on Counter Records back in 2016. Miracle also marks the Madrid-based producer's first appearance on Munich stable Permanent Vacation for almost four years. Opener "Miracle" is far dirtier and sleazier than mucj of When Love Hurts, with ultra-soulful vocals and piercing acid lines wrapping themselves around a sturdy, peak-time tech-house groove. Speaking of tech-house, there's a brilliantly bouncy bonus version in the shape of the Open Up Mix, while flipside "Tempest" combines the spiraling, synthesizer-driven riffs of big room techno with the foreboding bottom-end of early morning heads-down house.

Review: UK don Luke Slater returns with the fourth instalment of Deep Heet. The last edition released in 2012 on his esteemed Mote Evolver imprint is recognised by those that know as some of the most reliable techno tools in recent years: who can forget the sinister hypnotism of "Flat Tire": what a classic! You can bet there's yet more austere and ergonomic tracks for serious DJ use on offer here. Starting off with the driving and cyclical grunt of "Desert Races", then the tunnelling and trance inducing bell melody of "Life Rhythm" representing the A side. On the flip, the full throttle intergalactic charge of Random Kingdom and the dystopian minimalism of "Lazer Organical" which would make even Mike Parker stand up and notice! Slater is still without doubt one of the most singular talents in techno, respect!

Rantzen is an Australian producer with a history remixing the likes of Severed Heads and working alongside Paul Mac as Itch-E & Scratch-E. His lead track "Digital Elf" is a stripped a raw beats n' bleeps workout, while "The Dial" finds Mac chipping in as they rework the track into a deadly old-skool burner for lovers of bleep techno. Laccy has only had one prior outing to date, but sounds in strong form on the sleek and crafty "Spectrum Of Vibrations" and delightfully freaky "Coincidence Of Opposites".
