3 Cember (limited blue vinyl 7" + insert)
Cat: ZEL 02. Rel: 02 Jul 19

  1. 3 Cember (3:06)
  2. Yafta (3:50)
Review: If you're unfamiliar with the name Mavi Gunes 69, don't worry: it's a brand new project from Osman Murat Ertel - co-founder of cult Turkish psych-folk band BaBa Zula - and his life partner Esma Ertel, a talented singer, songwriter and dancer. There's much to admire on this out-there debut single, not least the lo-fi psychedelia of "3 Cember", where Esma Ertel's half-chanted vocals rise above hallucinatory Middle Eastern instrumentation (drenched in copious amounts of reverb) and a dark, low-slung groove. Flipside "Yafta" is a slightly more up-tempo affair, with flash-fried acid-funk guitar flashes and exotic instrumental flourishes rising above a near tribal late night groove. Both tracks are hugely atmospheric and undeniably intoxicating.

Review: It would be fair to say that Winston is nowhere near as well known as some of the record collectors who've compiled volumes in the "Under The Influence" series (think Nick The Record, Sean P and Red Greg), but it seems his crates are every bit as deep. Check, for example, the unashamedly celebratory, slap-bass propelled disco-funk of Doug Payne and Polygon's "Holiday", the heady, high-octane disco thrills of Expose's "I Just Wanna Dance With You", the low-slung early funk-rap headiness of Jungle Band's "Jungleland (Part 2)" and the wickedly percussive salsa-disco heaviness of Suave's "Salsa Gon Gitcha". In other words, it's a killer collection of top-notch cuts that you'll never have heard before. What's not to like?

Review: Over the years, Z Records' "Attack The Dancefloor" series has proved to be a serious source of tried-and-tested club cuts in a disco-centric style. Volume 13 is full to bursting with must-have tracks too. Label boss Dave Lee sets the tone, donning his famous Joey Negro alias to deliver a sumptuously summery "Disco Blend" of Mistura's Angela Johnson-voiced "Do You Love Me?" before Opolopo steals the show by turning Sylvester's surging disco anthem "I Need You" into a synth-sporting chunk of revivalist disco-boogie. Neapolitan Soul's "Welcome To The Dub" is a punchy chunk of disco-house laden in percussion and cute instrumental touches, while Lee's Joey Negro Club mix of Raquel Rodriguez's "We Go Together" is a sweet and seductive fusion of jazz-funk instrumentation and celebratory disco grunt.

Review: Blending elements of ambient, abstract experimentalism, minimalism and modern classical, Yutaka Hirose's sole LP - 1986's "Nova + 4" - has become something of an in-demand item in recent years. Here it gets the reissue treatment, allowing those of us without deep pockets to wallow in its evocative charms. It's an intriguing affair, with Hirose drifting between beguiling (if unusual) soundscapes (see "Nova", where metallic chimes and gentle piano motifs unfurl over sustained ambient chords), sublime minimalist ambient (the echoing melodies of "In The Afternoon" and cascading bliss of "Through The Windows"), slow burn new age ("Taiko", "Humming The Sea") and deliciously experimental sound collages ("Epilogue").

  4. Another Day (Patrice Scott mix) (6:43)
Review: Italian producer Reekee is back on his Wrong Notes label with another assured take on the soulful house template, which leads in with the bugged-out funk of "Another Day." Erik Rico's vocals sound on-point for this track, pushing Reekee's production into the stratosphere. "Tell Me Something" keeps the vibe resolutely deep, while "Feel Good" shuffles through a heads down club workout of the highest caliber. You'd be forgiven for thinking this record was landing on a label like Kai Alce's NDATL. Patrice Scott lends his masterful touch to "Another Day", edging the track into a different plain of emotional expression without losing the focus of Rico's vocal.

Review: Alice Clark's 1972 debut album - her sole full-length outing - has long been considered one of the great, unheralded soul albums, with collectors clamouring to source copies of the hard-to-find set. As this reissue proves, it remains a fantastic album. Clark's vocals are superb throughout, soaring above gospel-influenced backing tracks rich in Jimmy Smith style organs, hazy horns and a rhythm section that strikes a perfect balance between groovy looseness and low-down tightness. The set's plentiful highlights including soaring torch song "Don't Wonder Why", the jazzy wooziness of "Maybe This Time", the surprisingly funky (but still laidback and groovy) "Charms Of The Arms Of Love" and impressive opener "I Keep It Hid".

Review: When it comes to offering up re-mastered reissues of obscure Lebanese music, Wewantsounds has previous form. They've already delivered a new edition of Ziad Rahbani's "Abu Ali" LP and here serve up a fresh pressing of an album he produced: "Wahdon", a hard-to-find 1978 set by her mother, legendary Middle Eastern chanteuse Fairuz. It's a set of stark contrasts. While the A-side tracks indulge the more traditional side of Fairuz's output -think Lebanese vocals and instrumentation in the style of pop music from the region made in the period - the flipside cuts see her taking calculated risks. "Al Bosta" is a funk, soul and disco influenced club cut of the highest order, while "Wahdon" is a sumptuously symphonic soul slow jam straight from the top drawer.

Review: Huerco S regards previously unheard producer Mister Water Wet as something of a mentor, so it seems fitting that he's releasing the Kansas City based producer's debut album on his West Mineral label. It's a hugely enjoyable affair, with the producer offering a nod towards his Puerto Rican heritage via humid tropical field recordings, drowsy ambient electronics and sticky - and occasionally surprisingly percussive - grooves. What shines through most, though, is his ability to craft unusual, experimental sound collages and musical doodles that are variously lo-fi, psychedelic, unusually jazzy, sweaty and unsettling. If you had audio hallucinations following a bout of tropical fever, we imagine they'd sound something like this. It's definitely an album worth exploring in the dark, preferably with a glass of something heavy and potent.

Review: Loop LF is back on Well Street with another classy set of leftfield rhythm explorers that orbit a similar sound world to Livity Sound, Cong Burn, UntilMyHeartStops and other such adventurous contemporary techno labels. "Terra" kicks things off in a delicate fashion with shivering synth patterns skirting around gossamer thin percussion - it's subtle and incredibly effective. "Always NV" is even more stripped back, but no less engaging in its deployment of crooked rhythms and eerie atmospherics. "Natural XT" calls to mind the mellow, dubby refractions you might hear from Leif, and then Martsman steps up for a razor sharp D&B revision of "Always NV" that stays true to Loop LF's minimal aesthetic.

Review: Belgian label Walhalla Records specializes in re-releasing Belgian and Dutch wave, minimal wave, electro and EBM. After several highly acclaimed (and completely sold out) volumes, here is number six! Again a very fine selection of old and new tracks for the first time ever on vinyl, and featuring local bands from yesteryear such as such as: Commercial Term who provide the nonchalant reductionism on "We All Fight", and examples of proto EBM by Spleen on "Beat Love Affairs" and similarly White House White on "Your Screen". War Tempo (featuring former Nitzer Ebb drummer Duc Nhan Nguyen) similarly impresses on "Open Your Eyes". International contributions come from Hades from Brazil and SS20 from France. Again, a wealth of extremely rare and previously unreleased material, deeply rooted in the electronic 80's.

Review: Prolific Canadian composer Sarah Davachi shows no signs of slowing down. 2019 is barely six months old and she's already offering up her second set of the year, her seventh in total since the start of 2017. This time round, the Los Angeles-based experimentalist has returned to her roots, delivering a set of two distinctive halves. The A-side "Perfumes" suite is startlingly simple in concept, with Davachi creating a dreamlike mood via sustained, slowly shifting church organ chords and gentle piano motifs. It's little short of stunning. Turn to side B and you'll be treated to an exercise in avant-garde modern classical, where slowly vibrating strings and minimalist movements slowly evolve over 21 spell binding minutes.

Review: Since debuting as Grouper back in 2005, Liz Harris has delivered a swathe of experimentalist albums that explore almost every aspect of ambient and drone music. Here she launches a new project, Nivhek, via an expansive double-album of sparse, atmospheric compositions that tend towards the epic. Really, it's two albums in one. The first slab of wax is entitled "After Its Own Death" and boasts a two-part, non-stop suite of tracks built around echoing choral vocals, dark electronics and blissful bells. It's alternately melancholic, blissful and grippingly intense. In contrast, "Walking In A Spiral Towards The House", the piece stretched across both sides of the second record, is breathtakingly beautiful - a meandering, soft focus trip through chiming, reverb-laden motifs and gentle music box melodies.

Review: It feels like this reissue on the mighty Vibraphone has been a long time coming. While the Italian deep house bastion seemed to be focusing more on contemporary releases, they kept this gem from their back catalogue in their back pocket and now its time has come. Ricardo's "High Flyer" is a stone-cold deep house stunner, whichever version you plump for. The swooning pads and sweet organ lines are great on the original version, but for us the "Angel Mix" pips it with the edges smoothed out for a pure escapist strain of deep house truly sent from the heavens.

However, he has found time to continue his loyal relationship with Danish label Echocord and released on DJ Spider ad Dakini9's Plan B and Silent Season in recent years. Here he presents his fifth album entitled Materialize for Greek imprint Vibrant Music, and it's much unlike most of his previous work - representing a new evolution of his sound. A breathtaking collection of ambient scenes and drone journeys where he has come full circle, incorporating indie, shoegaze, cinematic soundscapes and other influences to explore time and space through a minimalist and stoic approach.

Four tracks of solid dark sonic matter "The Last Men" takes the lead with a powerful percussive hook maintaining a marching sensation that breaks into momentary splashes of breakbeat chaos. It's backed up the three more equally disarming and trippy tracks. "Blemish" is a swampy drill laced cut with noxious harmonics, while "Still Waters" takes us into the murkiest two-steppy territories you might imagine. Finally "Trapline" shuts, locks and bolsters the front door with a pounding steppy rhythm that's coated in echoes and dubby warmth. Buckle up.

This label debut from Belgian MZine continues the heat with necksnap stepper sessions that maintain Utopia's consistent quality. "Equate" is all about those throaty moans under a yearning desert call while "Croon (feat. Afya)" takes us much deeper into the machine's stomach so you can hear every acidic gurgle and croak. Flip for two more danger sessions: "Brinkman" is made of springs and laced with glacial pads while "Generis" closes the EP with a star-gazing cosmic touch. On-point.

This latest reissue of the English band sees the label complete its retrospection of Normil Hawaiians following reissues of More Wealth Than Money and Return of The Ranters LPs. This album in particular, which failed to take off in 1984 due to label and liquidation issues, sees its 2019 release arrive with a collectors edition of bonus tracks, including live cuts, album outtakes and unreleased B-sides. Review: It's no secret the love that London promoter and record label Upset! The Rhythm have for the ever rotating cast of musicians that is Normil Hawaiians. This latest reissue of the English band sees the label complete its retrospection of Normil Hawaiians following reissues of More Wealth Than Money and Return of The Ranters LPs. The band's music is the real deal when it comes to raw and emotional UK post punk and wave. This album in particular, which failed to take off in 1984 due to label and liquidation issues, sees its 2019 release arrive with a collectors edition of bonus tracks, including live cuts, album outtakes and unreleased B-sides. A 'o ia!

Review: With previous releases from some of the top heads of the electronic spectrum, including Leif, Steevio, Arnaldo and more, the imprint UntilMyHeartStops returns with its latest release, this time for mysterious producer Ekeko. Rich analog tape waves sit nicely beside thick 909 rhythmic elements throughout this killer three tracker. The title track "Beyond Good & Evil" starts things of with strong spirit, taking pulsations of warping synths and balancing them with hazy club driven patterns. This theme continues through "FM Joy" and "Eye Ache" but with a wider focus on the dubbier elements of the electro and house spectrum.

Review: Gary Martin is well known for his unique productions and his label Teknotika is surely a classic coming out of the famous motor city. This special 10" holds two sought after tracks that were found on a lost DAT tape by Yossi Amoyal and Gary Martin himself. On the A side we have a long time secret weapon, it's a hypnotic groove that was heard on many classic sets, Zip and Ben Klock to name a few. An extremely insane, hard to find Gigi Galaxy track that was changing hands for silly prices is on the B side, for those who know... massive release!

Review: Berlin scene veteran Diego Krause serves up the seventh release on his Unison Wax imprint and doing what he does best: deep and dubby tech house that's best served at the afterhours. Kicking off with the lo-slung tribal groove of the title track, Krause goes deeper into the morning hours next with the swirling and hypnotic minimalism of "Phenomena". On the flip, things get off to a bouncy start with the tripped-out and swing-fuelled house shenanigans of "The Company You Keep" followed by "Lost Tribe" which will draw you in with its entrancing and infectious bass-driven attitude.

Review: By all accounts, Son of Sound and Jus' Ed have been pals for years, though this is the first time they've penned a joint release. They begin with the fluttering, riff-propelled deep house bounce of "Cuchfritos", where rubbery drum fills help to create extra energy, before notching up the tempo via the spacey, synth-fuelled stomp of "I Have You On My Side". The swinging, jazz-dance friendly organ garage swing of "Bridgeport 2 Brooklyn" brilliantly draws the curtain down on Side A, before the duo kick off the flipside with the ultra-deep beauty of "Wicked Self", whose undulating synthesizer solos are particularly tasty. As if that wasn't enough to set the pulse racing, closer "Manhattan's Projects" is a fizzing chunk of rolling and spacey peak-time house.

Review: Having not released an album since starting his recording career almost a decade ago, Mr Tophat clearly thinks he has some catching up to do. His debut full-length is something of an epic, charting an imaginary journey from dusk to dawn inspired by a month the Swedish producer spent living in Ibiza. The first disc (part one) starts sun-kissed, soft-focus and Balearic, before the Swede launches into a series of percussive and punchy, club-ready cuts. He ups the intensity on the more vocal-heavy second disc - look out for a great hook-up with Axel Boman - before he replicates the slow creep of sunrise via a third disc full to bursting with starry ambience, tactile Balearic beats and the odd juddering dancefloor workout.

Review: Since he's such a prolific collaborator and creator of bands, it's easy to overlook the fact that Will Holland hasn't released a solo album as Quantic for almost five years. "Atlantic Oscillations", then, is a welcome return - particularly since Tru Thoughts boss Robert Luis thinks it's Holland's "most cohesive and intricate album to date". It's certainly a strong collection, with Holland wrangling multiple styles, tempos and musical influences to create cuts that defy easy categorization. While there are downtempo moments, "Atlantic Oscillations" includes more bona-fide club cuts then he's delivered in recent years, with sun-kissed disco cut "September Blues", Cuban disco-funk workout "Atlantic Oscillations" and Afro-Latin house bumper "Motivic Retrograde" standing out.

  4. Hotmood - "Everybody" (5:56)
Review: By now we should know what to expect from Tropical Records, namely beefed-up, house style re-edits of disco and boogie tracks that tend towards the hot, sticky and humid. Sartorial kicks things off this time round via the swirling, Latin style disco-bounce of "Warping" - all low-slung bass, new house beats, big orchestration and snaking sax solos - before Moodena straightens out and tools up a hybrid jazz-funk/disco jam that boasts some seriously exotic guitar solos and jammed-out electric piano parts. Simon Kennedy's contribution, "Back To Soul", is a bumpy and bouncy take on a fine disco soul classic, while Hotmood's "Everybody" is a sweaty, house style revision of a P-funk flavoured boogie number.

Review: Matt Anderson has been surprisingly quiet of late, with this tasty four-tracker on Tresydos marking the tech-house producer's first solo single for almost two years. It's also one of his best to date, too, with each of the four tracks offering up a slightly different twist on the tech-house template. Opener "Description" is spacey, bass-heavy and undulating, with subtle melodic motifs and tipsy electronics rising above a swinging, sub-heavy groove. "Small Talk" is warmer with hybrid electro/two-step beats and sun-kissed instrumentation, while "Gangsta Vox" is a bombastic affair heavy on crunchy drums, mind-mangling acid bass and ghostly chords. The American wraps things up nicely via the dreamy bounce of "Inside A Neutron Star", whose hazy chords and bubbly electronic motifs are underpinned by suitably dubby bass and hypnotic beats.

His latest full-length is a little different, though, offering up club-focused cuts that mix his usual fuzzy aural textures and dub-fired motifs with up-tempo techno rhythms. By his standards, it's a very forthright set, with highlights including the noise-soaked stomp of "Reiki", the thrusting heaviness of "ITO", the hypnotic slam of "Jade" - where breezy, early morning electronics flutter away above tough drums and a mind-altering bassline - and the boisterous peak-time techno anthem "Scrawler".

That much is proved by this essential debut album, a set full to bursting with thrilling fusions of Kuduro style electronics beats, lo-fi analogue electronics, traditional Congolese instrumentation, hand-played percussion polyrhythms and basslines so weighty they could crush an average-sized person. Review: Since 2015, Jacob Chenaux has been serving up singles made in collaboration with fellow Offenbach resident Martyne. Here he goes solo for the very first time with a four-track outing on Traffic. He eases us in gently via the crunchy techno-funk of "Frostnach" - all bouncy drum machine beats, rumbling bass and minor key organ melodies - before heading to deep space via the sci-fi bleeps, supersonic noises and robust drums of "Challenjour". Flip to the B-side for the wayward early morning techno throb of "Jericho" and the rubbery goodness of "Wrath", where Motor City style chords and chiming melodies rise above unfussy machine beats and a squelchy analogue bassline.

Created by longtime Studio Ghibli composer Joe Hisaishi who is one of Japan's most prolific and celebrated composers, this soundtrack is one of the lightest in mood with the 20 tracks running in chronological order. Stunning, raw and powerful.

Think the amplified epicness of The Who. The album twists and turns through telephone amplified blues ("Help Me Stranger"), the dandy piano ballads in "Shine The Light On Me" to the rolling, western, country drums of "Hey Gyp (Dig The Slowness)". Regardless of the tracks, this album teems with an energy that rock music has not felt for some time and there's no denying the future classic that this will become. Rock on The Raconteurs!

Five deep and meditative cuts that merge classic house/techno flavours with IDM and ambient aesthetics - all with a modern experimental twist. We are loving the floaty and entrancing drifter that is the title track, the driving EBM style arpeggio that is central to the epic groove of "Joyride To My Inside" and the hypnotic heads down bounce of "Earth Queen Voice". On the flip, he even dons his more popular Call Super alias for the Rhythim Is Rhythim-ish vibe of "The Mess".
