Voltage controlled envelope generator, standard edition - 14HP
Notes: The A-141-2 module is an ADSR envelope generator with voltage controlled attack, decay, sustain and release parameters. Other features include LFO functionality as well as digital end-of-attack and end-of-release outputs. Besides positive and inverted outputs there is an output with voltage controlled amplitude available.

Attack, Decay, Sustain and Release parameters of the A-141-2 can be adjusted manually as well as via control voltages. The CV inputs come equipped with attenuators. In addition, a Comm-CV socket was implemented. Control voltages fed to this input influence all time parameters (A, D and R) simultaneously. Thus, it is possible to make high pitched notes shorter and more percussive. - Just like the behaviour of many acoustic instruments. The time range of the envelope goes from 50 microseconds to six seconds. Using a toggle switch, it is possible to increase these values by a factor of ten (500 us to 60 s) or a factor of hundred (5 ms to 10 min). To activate the envelope, there are gate and retrigger inputs.

The A-141-2 is equipped with a normal and an inverted output. Both connectors work with a fixed level. Furthermore, there is a third, variable output. Here, before reaching the out socket, the envelope signal is fed to a voltage controlled VCA. - Perfect for velocity CV signals. A jumper on the circuit board allows you to choose between a unipolar and a bipolar mode of operation. Other jumpers make it possible to normalize the CV inputs.

Last but not least, there are two digital outputs called EOA and EOR, which emit a gate signal after the attack respectively release phase. This is useful for delayed triggering of other envelopes. By connecting EOA or EOR output to the gate input, you can make the A-141-2 oscillate like a LFO. Adjustments to the envelope times change the frequency and waveform. If you connect the Attack CV input to the inverted output or the Decay respectively Release CV input to the normal output, you can alter the curve characteristics.

Notes: Module A-142-1 is a voltage controlled envelope generator. The only time parameter is decay (like TB303). Decay may be adjusted manually and via voltage control input (with attenuator). The envelope output is displayed with LED control. Additionally from the envelope signal a Gate signal and an inverse Gate signal with adjustable threshold is derived. LED control for Gate output. Thus one obtains a voltage controlled Gate additionally or alternatively to the envelope signal with voltage controlled duration.

The attack time is fixed to about 0.2 ms, the shortest decay time is about 2 ms. By changing the value of a capacitor the shortest time can be modified (details can be found here: A100_Capacitors.htm).

Typical applications: dynamic control of decay e.g. in combination with the Analog/Trigger Sequencer A-155, voltage controlled trigger delay functions (like A-162, but voltage controlled).

Quad Decay featuring four simple envelope generators - 8HP
Notes: Module A-142-4 contains four simple envelope generators. The only time parameter is Decay and can be adjusted manually by means of the Dec. control in the range 2 ms ... 2 seconds. The attack time can be adjusted internally by means of a separate trimming potentiometer for each sub-unit in the range 1 ms ... 15 ms. The factory setting is about 3 ms. This is the attack time of the TB303. Each envelope output has a LED control available. The trigger inputs are normalled (1 -> 2 -> 3 -> 4).

Suggestions for modifications:

Each sub-unit has a pin header with two pins available. When the two pins are shortened (e.g. by means of a jumper or a toggle switch connected to the two pins) the corresponding sub-unit changes to a loop mode. In this mode the unit is triggered by itself like an LFO..

By changing the value of a capacitor the time range can be modified (e.g. 0.2 ms ... 0.2 seconds or 20 ms ... 20 seconds)

Quad AD-generator with four independent Attack-Decay envelopes - 28HP
Notes: Module A-143-1 is a complex envelope generator that consists of Attack/Decay generators. For the complex envelope generator the four units are daisy-chained, i.e. the preceding unit triggers the following unit. The four units can be used even as four separate AD generators (switch position AD) or AD-type LFOs (switch position).

Details: Module A-143-1 contains four separate attack/decay type envelope generators. Each unit can be switched into a free running mode (LFO mode). The LFO mode differs in several points from a regular LFO (like A-145, A-146 or A-147): The slopes are exponential - in contrast to linear slopes of a normal LFO, and the frequency is defined by both controls. The attack control defines the time of the rising slope, the decay control the falling slope.

Each unit has available a comparator that compares the AD output voltage with a manually adjustable threshold and switches the corresponding comparator output (Cp 1...4) to "high" as soon as the AD output voltage goes in the decay phase below this value. The comparator output is normalled to the trigger input of the next stage via the switching contact of the trigger input socket. Consequently the first unit triggers the second, the second triggers the third and so on.

Each AD generator is equipped with a Polarizer (look at the Voltage Controlled Polarizer A-133 concerning details about the polarizer function) and a mixer that adds up all polarizer outputs. This allows to add up all AD/LFO output signals inverting or non-inverting with adjustable level to the mix output. Additionally a single output (Env 1...4) is available for each unit.

If the trigger input of unit 1 is controlled by a normal gate signal (e.g. from a keyboard resp. MIDI-to-CV/Gate interface) one obtains a very complex envelope signal at the mix output. The signal contains 8 segments controlled by Attack 1, Decay 1, Attack 2, Decay 2, Attack 3, Decay 3, Attack 4 and Decay 4. The transition between the stages (i.e. when the following AD generator is triggered) is controlled by threshold knob. The positive or negative contribution of each unit to the mix signal is adjusted with the Mixing Polarizer control. If the trigger input of unit 1 is controlled by the comparator output of unit 4 one obtains a 8 stage LFO.

The single AD outputs can be used to control VCAs or VCFs that open one after another corresponding to the AD signals (a little bit similar to the Shepard generator A-191).

The default-connection between the four units (CPn = Trig.n+1) can be interrupted by patching cables into the trigger inputs. Consequently the four units can be used as separate AD generators or LFOs. In any case the mix signal is available (e.g. mix of four AD generators or LFOs with adjustable level and sign).

In the LFO mode the comparator output serves as LFO rectangle output with adjustable pulse width (= threshold control).

Each unit is equipped with a separate LED display for envelop and comparator output. The shortest attack/decay time is about 5 ms, the longest attack/decay times are about 3 seconds (attack) / 10 seconds (decay). By changing the value of a capacitor the shortest time can be modified (details can be found here: A100_Capacitors.htm).

The sketch at the bottom of the page shows the module principle with 4 daisy-chained AD units (as predetermined by the normalled sockets), that are mixed with the integrated polarizing mixer.

Simplistic quad LFO module with intuitive front panel - 14HP
Notes: Module A-143-3 is a low-cost four-fold modulation oscillator, often called LFO (low frequency oscillator). Like the other modules of the A-143 series (A-143-1 and A-143-2) not a very "exciting" module, just a bread-and-butter device and a simple demon for work. The module contains four simple LFOs. Each LFO is equipped with three waveform outputs: triangle, rectangle and rising sawtooth. The frequency of the sawtooth output is twice the frequency of the other outputs. A three-way switch is used to select one of three frequency ranges mid-low-high, spanning from about two cycles per minute at the lowest, to moderate audio frequency at the highest (about 5 kHz).

If other waveforms or additional LFO features are required (e.g. reset input, adjustable waveform, voltage controlled frequency) the LFO modules A-145, A-146 and A-147 are available.

- Red/yellow LED displays for the triangle outputs (red = negative output voltage, yellow = positive output voltage)
- Common control section with two CV inputs and manual control (these inputs and controls affect the frequency of all four units)
- Sum outputs for triangle and rectangle with red/yellow LED displays
- Optional ultra-low frequency mode: for this a negative voltage can be applied via a jumper internally to the CV2 input of each unit and the common section (i.e. a negative voltage is normalled to the socket CV2 in question). Then the CV2 - - Attenuator control works as a negative frequency control (i.e. turning up this control lowers the frequency). Herewith LFO periods up to about one hour (or even more) are possible.
- Optional CV bus access via jumper (i.e. the module can pick up the CV from the A-100 bus, e.g. generated by a Midi/CV or USB/CV interface A-190-x or a bus access module A-185-1/2), if the jumper is installed the bus CV affects all four units as the bus CV is added to the CV generated by the common control section
- Typ. frequency range: < 0.001 Hz (~ one hour, LFO mode with ultra-low option) ... 15 kHz (VCO mode with installed frequency range jumpers for the manual frequency controls)
- Heat-up time: ~ 15 minutes (required to heat-up the main circuit by the affixed oven)

The module was planned mainly as a quad VCLFO. But we added a range switch (nothing but a switch for two different capacitors) so that even audio frequencies are possible and the module can be used as VCO with some restrictions too. Because of the closeness of the main circuitry (i.e. four VCO cores within less ~ 1 square millimetre) the oscillators may lock if the frequencies are very close to each other and the VCO frequencies interact marginally. If a high quality quad VCO is required the A-111-4 is recommended as this module has four separate VCO circuits available.

The reset circuitry is optimized for the LFO mode. As it takes some time to discharge the oscillator capacitor the discharge time had to be chosen so that the capacitor is fully discharged in LFO mode. In the high range (where a much smaller capacitor is used) this will cause a zero state duration in the 0.3 ms range if the oscillator is synced (during this time the capacitor is shortened for discharge).
The control scale of the inputs "CV1" is about 1V/octave. To improve the behaviour in the VCO mode a tempco circuit is used to keep the temperature of the exponential converter at a fixed temperature (similar to the tempco option of the DIY SYNTH). That way the frequency of the VCOs (and even the VCLFOs) is nearly independent from the environment temperature. But the accuracy (1V/octave scale and temperature compensation) is not as precise as for the dedicated VCOs A-110 and A-111-1.

Voltage controlled sine-LFO with four separate, phase shifted outputs - 8HP
Notes: Module A-143-9 is a derivative of our planned thru-zero quadrature VCO. It is a voltage controlled sine LFO with 4 outputs. The phase shift between the outputs is 90 degrees. The sine shifted by 90 degrees is also called cosine, the sine shifted by 180 degrees is nothing but the inverted sine, and the sine by 90 degrees is nothing but the inverted cosine.

The frequency range is from some minutes to frequencies beyond audio with three ranges selected by a toggle switch:

- Switch position H: about 30 Hz ... 3.5 kHz with the manual frequency control ("Frq."), beyond 20 kHz with additional external CV
- Switch position M: about 1 Hz ... 150 Hz with the manual frequency control ("Frq.")
- Switch position L: about 0,1 Hz ... 10 Hz with the manual frequency control ("Frq."), down to several minutes with additional external CV

Two exponential frequency control inputs are available: CV1 without attenuator and CV2 with polarizer. Consequently the module can be used even as an experimental sine VCO but does not feature an exact 1V/oct CV input! The precision CV input will be left to the thru-zero quadrature VCO.

Two LEDs display the positive and negative share of the sine output.

The core of the module is a so-called quadrature circuit that generates a sine a cosine signal with very low distortion. The quality of the sine/cosine signals are much better than those generated by a waveform converter with a sawtooth or triangle signal as starting point.

The output levels are about 5 Vss (+/-2.5V) but can be adjusted internally by a trimming potentiometer (P5 "Shape").

Typical applications:

- External sine/cosine oscillator for the frequency shifter A-126
- Modulations with pure sine/cosine waveforms
- Quadrature/barberpole effects (e.g. with the voltage controlled mixer A-135)
- Experimental sine/cosine VCO (e.g. for FM sounds)

Many users suggested to add a common output level control, i.e. four VCAs with one common control (manual + CV without attenuator + CV with polarizer) for the output levels. This is why we also designed the Quad VCA module A-132-2 with the possibility of an internal default connection to the four outputs of the A-143-9 (no soldering required, short 10 pin flat cable with removable connectors on both ends).

The A-143-9 is also a meaningful addition for the Frequency Shifter module A-126. It enables frequency shifting even below 50 Hz generating e.g. these mellow beat sounds with a few Hz frequency shifting only. The thru zero version of the A-143-9 with temperature compensation is the module A-110-4.

Low frequency oscillator with adjustable waveform - 8HP
Notes: Module A-146 (LFO 2) is a Low Frequency Oscillator, which produces periodic control voltages over a wide range of frequencies.

The LFO can be used as a modulation source for a series of modules (for instance pulse width and/or frequency modulation of a VCO, modulation of a VCF cut-off frequency, amplitude modulation with a VCA).

Three outputs are available, with different waveforms: sawtooth / triangle; square wave, and positive-voltage square wave.

The waveform is continuously adjustable from rising sawtooth, through triangle to falling sawtooth. The same control affects the pulse width of the square wave.

A three-way switch can select one of three frequency ranges, spanning from one cycle every few minutes, at the lowest, up to audio frequency at the highest.

Multi-function module with LFO, switchable VCA, & VC delay - 8HP
Notes: Module A-147-2 is the successor of the VCLFO A-147 but offers much more features than the predecessor. The module is made of these sub-units:

- VCLFO: voltage controlled low frequency oscillator
- VCA: voltage controlled amplifier, switchable to voltage controlled polarizer
- VC delay unit: voltage controlled linear attack envelope (only one parameter: attack) for delayed LFO operation in combination with the VCA (e.g. delayed vibrato/tremolo)

LFO: The voltage controlled LFO has the waveforms Triangle, Sine, Sawtooth and Rectangle available and features a Reset/Sync input. Triangle/Sine and Rectangle are displayed by means of dual-colour LEDs (probably red/green), Sawtooth has a unicolor LED available (probably blue). The output levels are about -4V...+4V for Triangle, Sine and Rectangle. The Sawtooth level is about 0...+8V. The CV control can be switched to attenuator or polarizer ("CV Mode" switch). In polarizer mode the CV inputs affects the frequency in the reverse manner when the CV control is left from the centre position. In the centre position CV has no effect and right from the centre the control works like a normal attenuator. The frequency range (without external CV) is from about 0,005 Hz (i.e. about 3 minutes per period) to 200 Hz (with external CV max. frequency about 1kHz). In addition a ultra-low mode can be activated by means of an internal jumper. When the ultra-low jumper is set a fixed voltage is connected to the switching contact of the "LFO CV" socket. In polarizer mode of the CV control that way extremely low frequencies (up to one hour period and more) are possible. For this a jumper has to be installed on the pin header JP6. In the factory a dummy jumper is installed on the pin header JP7 "Dummy". JP7 has no function and is used only for "parking" of the jumper. Simply remove the jumper from JP7 and plug it on JP6. JP6 is located behind the CV control.

VCA: This is a linear VCA that can be switched to "normal" VCA (i.e. kind of a voltage controlled attenuator) or voltage controlled polarizer ("VCA Mode" switch). In the "normal" VCA mode amplification +1 is achieved with about +5V control voltage. In polarizer mode the amplification ranges from about -0.5 (i.e. inverted signal with about 50% level) with 0V CV to +0.5 (i.e. non-inverted signal with about 50% level) with +5V CV. With about +2.5V CV the signal is suppressed. Details about the functioning of a voltage controlled polarizer can be found in the description of the module A-133. In this mode the VCA can be treated also a DC coupled ring modulator (similar to A-114).

The VCA of the A-147-2 has three sockets available: "In" (signal input), "Out" (signal output) and "CV" (control voltage input).

The Triangle Output of the LFO is normalled to the VCA signal input by means of the switching contact of the "VCA In" socket. If another LFO waveform (or any other signal) should be processed by the VCA the corresponding signal has to be patched to the "VCA In" socket. The VCA can be used also independently from the LFO and the Delay CV. In this case the VCA sockets In, Out and CV have to be patched accordingly. The VCA can be used also as waveshaper for the LFO signals (e.g. by patching VCA In and VCA CV to different LFO signals, if necessary via attenuator A-183-1 or offset generator/attenuator A-183-2).

Attack/Delay: The third sub-unit of the module is a simple, voltage controlled envelope generator that has only the parameter "Delay" (or Attack) available. This unit generates a linear increasing voltage that starts from 0V after each Delay Reset until it reaches about +5V. Then the voltage remains at +5V until the next Delay Reset occurs. The inclination or gradient is controlled by the manual Delay control and the Delay control voltage ("Delay CV" input). The waveform is linear, the control scale is exponential. The output voltage is displayed by a green LED and available at the "Delay Out" socket.

Review: Uwe Schmidt - he of Atom Heart, Atom TM and Senor Coconut fame - has used an insane number of aliases over the years, so you'd be forgiven for not knowing about the sole album he produced as Dots. It first appeared on CD way back in 1994 and has long been considered something of a slept on classic by '90s ambient fans. Here it appears on vinyl for the very first time courtesy of Astyral Industries, a label that knows a thing or two about unearthing forgotten ambient treasure. Stylistically, there are hints to some of Schmidt's other work - a dub bassline here, an abstract motif there - but for the most part the becalmed and beguiling soundscapes have more in common with the work of German ambient legend Pete Namlook.

Review: Tomoki Tamura and Tuccillo first fired up their Doublet collaboration back in 2015, and after a brief hiatus they've reignited the project with another three delicate and dynamic excursions. "Chotto Complications" is a crafty construction that works around an electro framework, with intricate beat programming and nimble synth lines anchored by fulsome chord drops. "Big Moon" takes things into a more hypnotic headspace, using hushed tones to mark out the atmosphere around an undulating deep house groove. "Tiger Nuts (dub)" is the feistiest track on the record, using a punchy rhythm section and nagging sample daggers to create an insistent groove that will do the damage for the tech house cognoscenti.

Review: For those who dig dancefloor-friendly takes on World Music classics, the Sterns Edits label - a collaboration between producer Ben Gomori and long-serving African and Brazilian music specialists Sterns Music - should be an imprint to watch. The label's latest must-have EP boasts fresh revisions of killer cuts from the epic back catalogue of Malian artist Nahawa Doumbia. Gomori works his magic on 1987 cut "Sige Sele", first sticking rolling house beats beneath the original's cut-glass strings, funky bass, storming horns and superb vocals (the A-side "Edit"), before opening the flipside with a largely vocal free "Disco Dub" that's arguably even better. To round things off, Tom Jay offers a similarly tooled up take on the more synthesizer-heavy "Djina Mousso".

Review: With this sequel to December's brilliant, compilation style "The Orbitant" EP, FU ME boss George K is spoiling us. With a high quality threshold and five varied cuts to enjoy, it offers excellent value for money for clued-up electro DJs. Heinrich Dressel sets the scene via some wonderfully spacey, widescreen ambient electronica ("Sem Intro"), before Galaxian wraps 1990 style Yorkshire bleeps and fizzing, minor key electronics around a booming bassline and ghetto-tech style drums on "Source Reality". Foreign Sequence's throbbing, acid-laden "Negative Vibe" sits somewhere between surging Italo-disco and pulsating electro, while Lake Haze's "System Glitch" combines creepy, deep space electronics and ragged acid lines with a rolling electro groove. Arguably best of all though is the mutant funk overload that is Jenson Interceptor's techno/electro fusion workout "Faceless".

Review: London duo Dusky are up next on Running Back, with what appears to be the first volume in their new Life Signs series. Best described by Gerd Janson and Co. as British bass science applied on classic house tropes, where breakbeats underpin transcendent melodies and IDM meets UKG. The lads behind the much lauded 17 Steps label are in fine form here: from the electrifying Italo disco influenced number "Boris Borrison's Trip To Morrisons" on the A side being unlike anything we've heard from the pair before. On the flip, it's a throwback to the illegal dance parties of the early '90s on the pitched-down hardcore breaks of "Lea Valley" and harking back to a similar era is the euphoric "Static".

Review: Last year, East End Dubs ended his Social series after releasing 10 sought-after EPs in just under three years. "Social Part 2" is the second boxed retrospective of this work; while the first edition gathered together EPs one to five, this sequel boasts numbers six to ten. The 15 included tracks are all up to the prolific producer's high standards, offering an attractive late night blend of swinging tech-house rhythms, rich bass, spacey pads, intergalactic melodies and atmospheric aural textures. There's little filler or fluff, just quality peak-time grooves, occasional warm-up workouts and a sprinkling of loved-up anthems-in-waiting (see the delicious "Track 6" and glassy-eyed "Track 8").

Review: Basic Rhythm man Anthoney J Hart has previously released a handful of fine albums and singles as East Man, most notably a couple of killer LPs on Planet Mu. In recent times he's decided to go it alone, pressing up 12" singles on the Hi Tek Sounds label he launched last year. This time round he's in full-on collaboration mode, with Hyperdub and Tectonic regular Walton joining him to lay down a pair of military strength club cuts. A-side "Horse Mouth" is a throbbing chunk of bass science, with the pair wrapping mind-altering analogue bass, creepy chords and occasional dub-wise vocal samples around a hard-wired staccato rhythm. This twisted take on dubstep is explored further on flipside "Gunshot", whose scattergun machine drums come bathed in oven-warm chords.

Notes: When Billy Sheehan first turned to EBS to create his signature pedal, he needed to capture the essence of his sound in a pedal to serve him when he could not bring his entire rig. It turned out so great it has been a significant part of his main setup ever since and served thousands of other bass players as well. Now it's time for the ultimate version!

"This pedal is a distillate of several important principles in the signal chain for bass. Compression, distortion, tone-shaping and blending all together", Billy said when EBS released his first signature pedal in 2013. The original concept is still the same, but with more features added along the way.

Since the pedal splits the signal into two parallel paths - one clean and one with distortion - it becomes as if running the sound through two different bass rigs at the same time. The two Clean and Drive Level controls decides how you set the mix and melt the paths together. For a tighter, more defined sound you can engage the built-in compressor. Threshold settings for the compressor can be adjusted inside.

A Phase Inverter switch brings back more low-end to the drive channel at times. The Boost footswitch kicks up the drive gain a notch when needed.

The new and major feature of the Ultimate version is the Hi or Lo Frequency Filter. This switch moves the whole frequency spectrum of the Tone filter up or down, to extend the capabilities of the pedal.

The Hi setting adds a whole new palette of distortion sounds that was not possible to create with previous versions of the pedal.

The individual Effect Loops for each channel can be used to colour the channels individually with external effects. The Clean Loop jack can also be used as a clean input if you have a bass that features dual outputs. It sounds great if you run the lows through the Clean Loop jack while the mids/highs go through the main input, which leaves the lows untouched and only the higher frequencies treated by the drive.

This version has inherited all the features from the Deluxe version (including the possibility to swap the drive chip without the need of soldering). But the palette of sounds you can create is expanded by the new Hi or Lo frequency filter to make it complete.

Notes: STRUCTURE is a visual generator module that is based internally on an OpenGL GLSL node based platform. It uses the concept of node structures to push visuals through the system.

STRUCTURE contains a video input system that you can select between two formats, Composite video or LZX 1V RGB (with sync applied to rear of module). The Composite input does full colour decoding. Input video can be mixed through effects, with other generators, effected with audio, etc. Input video can be NTSC or PAL, 480i. STRUCTURE auto detects and converts video inputs.

STRUCTURE contains two mirrored video outputs, both composite, selectable to NTSC or PAL 480i.

Two audio rate CV inputs can be used with audio nodes to generate audio based visuals, effects moved by audio waveform, XY plotting of audio inputs, or just used at low frequency CV inputs when not using audio nodes.

Three CV rate inputs can be used to modulate a variety of controls on each node.

All CV can be set independently to 1V or 5V expected input. Each CV has a scale control and a positive offset control for fine tuning incoming CV voltages.

A joystick can be used to modulate controls in real time, or used to record motion information that is played back in a loop. In addition, the joystick has a metal hat for nice weighted movement.

STRUCTURE can also generate 3D graphics, animate properties of the 3D objects, and allow you to map and node type to the texture of the 3D objects (like video).

Three gate inputs, usable by local buttons as well.

Three macro knobs on the top right, allow for global changes to the output node which are user configurable.

STRUCTURE has a USB input, which you can attach MIDI interfaces, MIDI keyboards, controllers, etc, or even a standard PC keyboard or numeric keypad. You can assign actions or state changes to trigger from any of these input sources.

SDCARD on front and back. Backside SDCARD stores system, front side stores user presets, images, configurations, objects, custom shaders, etc.

STRUCTURE has a full colour 320×240 preview screen which also provides lots of feedback when using.

Hanson handles the A-side, delivering a punchy, club-ready electro workout rich in intergalactic electronics, Egyptian Lover style synth flourishes and restless drum machine cowbells. Interestingly, it's a far bolder and retro-futurist affair than we've come to expect from the dreamy and emotion-rich E.R.P. project. Ironically, Duplex's atmospheric and spacey "Molecular (Ovatow Reclock)" is undeniably deep and sumptuous, matching Hanson's most melodious and evocative moments.

Review: The long-serving Psychoskunk label comes back in full force with some unflinching underground techno gear from Error Etica, otherwise known as label boss Victor Martinez. "Inductors V2" sets a serious tone for this record with its reduced soundscape and needlepoint sound design attitude. Hironori Takahashi then makes an appearance remixing "Diatonic Scale" and turning it into a deadly, minimalist bruiser. 65D Mavericks jump on "Schematic Diagram" and laden it with blown out kicks and eerie atmospherics, and then Pelacha tackles "Inductors V1" and embellishes it with creeping, modulating textures that bring the track to life in a most unsettling of ways, as was surely the intention. This is techno for darkened souls if ever we heard it.

Quite how this fits with the music on offer isn't explained, though the Balearic-minded music offered up is excellent. Check first "The Price You Pay (For Loving That Way)", an arpeggio-driven slab of sun-kissed nu-disco/Balearic house fusion rich in life-affirming Rhodes chords, twinkling synth lines and delay-laden saxophone solos. "Kites At Nemoto Beach" is a gently unfurling ambient soundscape full of drowsy vocal harmonies, while closing cut "Sundowning" sees Essa wrap glistening guitars and thickset synth bass around a bubbly mid-tempo drum machine rhythm.

Review: During a dinner date last year, Max Pask played Joakim "Never Gonna Leave You", an often-overlooked chunk of soft-focus dancefloor soul by Boston artist Evans Pyramid. Keen to integrate it into his DJ sets, Joakim joined forces with Pask to produce two tooled-up revisions of the 1978 Massachusetts classic. On the A-side you'll find the "Housemix", where Evans Pyramid's glistening guitars, evocative pianos, simmering strings and groovy bassline are combined with punchy (but tasteful) new machine drums and smothered in just the right amount of delay and reverb. Thanks to judicious use of filter sweeps, the mix is an undeniably energy-packed affair. As you'd perhaps expect, the flipside "Discomix" is closer in tone and feel to the 1978 original mix, albeit with heavier bass and more mixable drums.

Review: When it comes to offering up re-mastered reissues of obscure Lebanese music, Wewantsounds has previous form. They've already delivered a new edition of Ziad Rahbani's "Abu Ali" LP and here serve up a fresh pressing of an album he produced: "Wahdon", a hard-to-find 1978 set by her mother, legendary Middle Eastern chanteuse Fairuz. It's a set of stark contrasts. While the A-side tracks indulge the more traditional side of Fairuz's output -think Lebanese vocals and instrumentation in the style of pop music from the region made in the period - the flipside cuts see her taking calculated risks. "Al Bosta" is a funk, soul and disco influenced club cut of the highest order, while "Wahdon" is a sumptuously symphonic soul slow jam straight from the top drawer.

The A-side features an all-star '60s soul cover of the Frightnrs rock-steady cut featuring vocal contributions from Saun and Starr, James Hunter, Lee Fields, Naomi Shelton, Duke Amayo, the Frightnrs and two legends who are no longer with us: Charles Bradley and Sharon Jones. It's a one-off that won't be repeated for obvious reasons, but more importantly it's very, very good. Over on the flip main man Bosco Mann takes charge, conducting and producing "two opposing armies" of woodwind and horn players from the label's expansive musical roster. As you'd expect, it's something of an epic.

Review: Shadowy London producer Filter Dread returns from Beyond Saturn with four new futurist designs. This time on Seattle newcomer label Tech Startup. Maintaining his stark ravey elements, pneumatic breaks and grainy bass signature, the vibe remains hardcore, rough around the edges throughout. "Rainforest" is near militant with its drum edits and warped, detuned synth washes while "Blizzard" brings a crush sense of decay to the percussion and much more of a subverted electro feel to the mix. Flip for two more weapons: the gnarled, schizoid "Tripping Up" which touches on breakcore but at a much slower tempo and "RX 4 Real" which taps into the classic hardcore aesthetic and flips more switches than Battersea Power Station.

The legend of this track harks back to the golden years of dubplate culture, when a track's infamy could be felt months before it dropped. Sherelle lay waste to the place when she dropped Fixate's utterly devilish bootleg of Double 99's timeless garage classic "Ripgroove," which artfully nudges the track back into the rudest jungle styles the original made such good use of. It had to get an official pressing, and who better than original label Ice Cream Records to do the business? This one is going to fly out, so don't hang around.

Small compact joystick module with recording function - 8HP
Notes: The module can record the joystick movement up to a length of over a minute. The sequence remains stored in the battery-backed RAM after switching off. When playing the sequence, it can be manipulated in speed and playback direction.

There is a FREEZE function to hold the current joystick position plus an external reset input. In addition, a GATE is set during movement and a CV voltage is output as a function of the joystick movement. The ranges of the X / Y output voltages are bipolar +/- 5v or unipolar from 0 to + 10v. Both channels X and Y have a passive attenuator potentiometer, so that the voltage range can also be set lower.

On the A side, this hypnagogic adventure stretches out over a wonderful eight minute extended mix, while the B side features two alternative versions that offer subtly adjusted, abridged versions to give you many different ways to run at this heavy-lidded blast of balladry.

Review: Sam Shepherd may have spent the last few years offering up off-kilter, jazz-fired grooves and heady ambient soundscapes, but he still knows how to rock a dancefloor. That much is proved by his first Floating Points single for almost two years. "LesAlpx (Extended)" is his most forthright, club-focused cut in ages - a thrusting chunk of rumbling, peak-time techno built around heavy bass, sweaty drums, twinkling electro piano motifs and raging, foreboding electronics. Shepherd teases in the most melodic, rush-inducing elements, introducing spacey synthesizers and dreamy chords midway through. It's breathtakingly good. Flipside "Coorabell" is similarly potent, with acid style electronics, warm chords and sun-kissed electronics wrapped around swinging, two-step influenced house beats and a weighty, sub-heavy bassline. In a word: essential.

Review: The latest missive from Russian imprint Private Persons comes courtesy of Formally Unknown, a bass-obsessed duo who won plenty of plaudits for last year's "Off Peak EP" on Dusky's 17 Steps label. Their love of weighty, bowel-bothering sub-bass comes to the fore on opener "Hectic", a clandestine stepper rich in metallic percussion hits, rumbling low end frequencies and watery, dubbed out electronic motifs. The sense of foreboding continues on the pulsating peak-time creepiness of "Rave Safe", while "Fields" sees them pepper an off kilter two-step rhythm with glassy-eyed chords, ear-catching bleeps and wonky percussion fills. Fittingly, the pair finishes with an inspired flourish via "Feel It", a rush-inducing breakbeat cut that recalls the glory years of British rave music.

Forty Seven Times Its Own Weight's "Cumulo Nimbus" is the first of these. It's a pleasingly warm and evocative set of tracks from the one-album combo that offers an enjoyable and cutting edge fusion of hard-wired jazz-funk, post-modal fusion, horizontal slow jams and low-slung goodness that pairs free-jazz style solos and spiritual grooves with just the right amount of funk-fuelled instrumentation (see "Jig"). The set includes both dancefloor-friendly and laid-back fare, with the jaunty title somehow managing to tick both boxes at once.

Review: Following hot on the heels of their fine "Truffles EP" on Heist, Fouk pops up on House Of Disco with another distinctive collection of sample-rich fusions of house, disco, boogie and P-funk. The Dutch duo sets the tone superbly via colourful opener "Release The Kraken", where Plantlife style vocals from Thumpasaurus rise above vibrant synths, thickset boogie bass and sweaty house drums. "Night Shift" is a synth-bass propelled dusty deep house roller - think tasty Rhodes stabs, sampled party atmosphere and loose but groovy drums, while "Gloriole" is an acid-flecked chunk of quirky house goodness. To round things off, they wrap more colourful P-funk synths around a dense, live-sounding rhythm on the bass-heavy deep house warmth of "Arrakis".

Review: Berlin-based British producer Joe Seaton dons the Onno Fudd alias once again, following up a couple of releases on Will Bankhead's The Trilogy Tapes label - namely 2016's terrific Blue Dot EP. Five deep and meditative cuts that merge classic house/techno flavours with IDM and ambient aesthetics - all with a modern experimental twist. We are loving the floaty and entrancing drifter that is the title track, the driving EBM style arpeggio that is central to the epic groove of "Joyride To My Inside" and the hypnotic heads down bounce of "Earth Queen Voice". On the flip, he even dons his more popular Call Super alias for the Rhythim Is Rhythim-ish vibe of "The Mess".

Review: Funkyjaws is the Belarusian DJ and producer Sergey Abramov, who you might have previously spotted on Kolour LTD and Shadeleaf Music, often alongside Four Walls. Now a new start up label from St Petersburg has called on Abramov to inaugurate their imprint with his incredibly funky touch, leading in with the sweaty Afrobeat thump of "Ole Ole" and following up in fine style with the sprightly "Heavy Salsa Pushka Bassline", where salsa rips, rudeboy breaks and disco strut gleefully bounce off each other. "Untitled I" and "Untitled II" continue the West African trip with another two brilliant edit workouts with plenty of oomph where it counts.
