Review: New York punks Love Child first burst onto the early 90s scene in the same aeonic breath as Pavement, Sebadoh and Beat Happening. But despite the ignition and hype, their debut seven-inch and subsequent releases have remained long out of print until now. Never Meant to Be: 1988-1993 pulls from these releases and some unreleased radio sessions, unearthing a trove of lost gems by the quadrangle of Will Baum, Alan Licht, Rebecca Odes and Brendad O'Malley. The former obscurity is undeserved and the reissue deserved, as the climaxes on this record - from the garbly top-reg guitar solo on 'Know Its Alright' to the tape-warblings of 'Sofa' (through and despite which we can still make out its humourous lyrics) - are full of forceful punk rapace.

Review: When Mick Mars stepped back from touring with Motley Crue, it seemed like the end of an era. Really, it was the beginning of a new one. The legendary guitarist, whose riffs, solos and overall devastatingly heavy sound powered the L.A. icons through four decades of world-conquering, multi-platinum sonic mayhem is, as he demonstrates on his debut solo effort, still a serious force to be reckoned with. Only now, listeners are reckoning with more Mars than ever before. On the aptly-titled The Other Side of Mars, fans get that vision in its full, multifarious glory. To be sure, there are plenty of characteristically riff-tastic, tough-as-nails hard-rock anthems, but The Other Side of Mars also shows the 71-year-old guitarist heading into new and uncharted territory, tearing through caustic, modern metal ('Broken On The Inside"', conjuring gothic-tinged soundscapes ('Undone'), digging into anguished, slow-burning power balladry ('Killing Breed"' and unspooling bluesy, cinematic instrumental workouts (the album-closing guitar showcase, 'L.A. Noir'). The music throughout the ten-track collection, meanwhile, is otherwise studded with slide guitars, violins, violas, keyboards, glitchy freak-outs and all manner of sonic surprises.

Four Calendar Cafe is a latter-day LP from dream pop pioneers Cocteau Twins, now reissued by their home stretch 4AD (though it first appeared as a defection to Dutch label Fontana). Though it isn't an album of high priority in the average Cocteau canon, this very fact proves that the average Cocteau enjoyer can be differentiated from the patrician cream. That's all due to the fact that Four-Calendar Cafe oozes a maturity that only a seventh full-length album could muster, infamously swerving away from the ambient indeterminacy of their prior albums and veering into greater accessibility and popcraft, with the likes of 'Evangeline' and 'Bluebeard' garnering the band moderate success in the charts.

Review: All-round legend Cut Chemist puts together a tight little showcase of some of the greatest tracks by French synth outfits Vox Populi! And Pacific 231. In fact, it makes complete sense because these guys were basically churning out hip-hops beats even before the term was coined. Cutting and overdubbing reel-to-reel machines, this record was light-years ahead of its time and still sounds like something strange and wonderful these days. Twenty track altogether and all of the absolute rippers, you can almost hear the tape-head being cut a re-looped. A pleasure for the hardcore coldwavers out there.

A-Ton is a new label from Berlin heavyweights Ostgut Ton, designed to focus on "ambient, archive and alternative music". They've pulled off something of a coup for this debut release, persuading British techno legend Luke Slater to open up the archives of his '90s intelligent techno project, The 7th Plain. Chronicles I boasts a mixture of previously released and unheard material, which moves from glistening, outer-space ambience (the near perfect "Boundaries", "Grace"), to fizzing Motor City techno ("T-Funk Statues"), via intergalactic intelligent techno, dusty downtempo grooves (the jazzy hip-hop rhythms and ambient electronics of "Slip 7 Sideways"), and melodious IDM.

Review: For all his iconic status in modern rock 'n' roll lore, Bobby Gillespie remains very much a fan, one whose humility regarding the music he loves and the influence it's had on him has never been far away from his public persona. With this in mind, we're in remarkably safe hands with this soothing collection of beatific charmers and laidback deep cuts, which offer a kaleidoscopic trajectory from the very birth of rock 'n' roll (Jerry Lee Lewis) through the '60s (Beach Boys) and '70s (Gram Parsons) via his own journey through punk and beyond in the process. One suspects Mr. Gillespie has had more than his fair share of late nights requiring just such a come down, thus it's little surprise to find the man knows exactly how to handle 'em.

Since Time Is Gravity is actually credited to Natural Information Society Community Ensemble with Ari Brown and this is an expanded manifestation of the acclaimed composer and multi-instrumentalist Joshua Abrams who dropped seven fine albums over a 15 year career. This music was recorded to tape live at Electrical Audio & The Graham Foundation and takes in expansive minimalism and rich rhythmic patterns.

Review: Air Vinyl have secured a deal that allows them to reissue the seminal joint album by Benny The Butcher and 38 Spesh. The second part of the album comes later in the year, but the first one from 2018 is in the spotlight here. It's an accomplished affair that draws you int via lazy and long legged beats on the intro then gets more serious and confrontational on "Driver's Seat" (feat Styles P & Jadakiss). Social issues are address square on with tracks like "Gun Or Knife" and sweeter interludes like "Intro" (instrumental) help things move on without getting too heavy on one topic.

Review: In 1979, dub legend Lee 'Scratch' Perry "adopted" a pair of Congolese musicians who had been left stranded on Jamaica, put them together with his regular session players in the Black Ark studio he later burned down in a fit of psychosis, and recorded an album. As this fine reissue proves (the second in as many months; it was also reissued under the alternative title "Roots From The Congo"), the resultant music - a vibrant mix of Perry's particular brand of dub reggae and soukous music - was not only magical, but also unlike almost anything that had come before. For some reason it was only ever released on small labels in France and Belgium at the time, meaning that original copies are extremely hard to find. This reissue, then, is long overdue. Do yourself a favour and snap them up before they all disappear.

Review: One of many Studio One-affiliated releases to crop up as of late, Dadawah's 'Peace And Love / Wadadasow' is a rarity few heads can claim to know. A side alias of practising Rastafarian and musician Ras Michael (Michael George Henry), Dadawah ended up his magnum opus despite original intent as a lower-key piece. This one's made up of a weird and wonderful cross-section of styles: wah guitar, plodding bass and the rhythmic chants of his religious music influence of choice, the Nyabhinghi - Rastafarian devotional music combining African drumming and gospel. A classic, reissued whirlwind of laid-back joy.

Now a full band, Glitterer returns with Rationale, combining 90s grunge, capital-R riffs a la The Stooges and a keyboard lead motif that gives self-deprecating melodrama. After relying more on synths for the entirely solo, home-recorded Glitterer LP in 2017, Russin involved collaborators on the crunchier Looking Through the Shades in 2019, and this trend heard him move towards driving indie rock grit with 90s influences, continued on 2021's Life Is Not a Lesson and now Rationale. Russin has a unique voice to boot, not instinctively a shoegazey spectre, instead more of a belting tenor, but this proves a beautiful combination.

Review: Moor Mother (Camae Ayewa) delivers her latest album of import, The Great Bailout, using ironic economic terminology to satirise the British slave trade and its subsequent elision by the history books. A collaborative project that expands her original experimental hip-hop horizon, the likes of 'GUILTY' and 'ALL THE MONEY' hear new instrumental contributions from both canonical jazz artists and fresher faces, be they Lonnie Holley in the former camp and Mary Lattimore and Alya Al-Sultana in the latter. Moor Mother's revision is critical, calling out hidden ballasts such as the V&A Museum as purveyors of historical violence, while indulging a well-thought-out palette: no sound or texture is used here without careful thought as to its signification, whether wateriness to evoke the sense of drowning, or muted cacophony to recall the storms endured by victims of the trade in ships' hulls.

Review: Originally released in 2007, the fourth album (or fifth, depending on whether you consider Half Hour Of Power to be their debut full-length) from Canadian pop-punk mainstays Sum 41 marked their first of two as a trio, with lead guitarist Dave "Brownsound" Baksh departing during this era to focus on his own Brown Brigade project. Following on from the heavily thrash-metal indebted mature left turn of Chuck, which began in earnest with the metallic early The Offspring vibe of Does This Look Infected?, while losing their axeman who brought so many of the face-melting guitar solos that peppered those LPs, Underclass Hero offered somewhat of a revert to the more jovial pop-punk found on their earlier work, yet elevated by the seasoned writing chops acquired over time. Making up for their whittled down line up with extensive use of acoustic guitars, synthesisers and a more expansive sonic scope, many have since compared the material to that of Green Day's American Idiot or My Chemical Romance's The Black Parade in terms of theatricality and concept. Clocking in at a lengthy (by punk standards) 52 minutes, and boasting some of the band's most dynamic and emotive cuts such as the emo-tinged longtime fan favourite 'Walking Disaster' as well as the anthemic opening title-track, Sum 41's near two decade old pop punk rock opera attempt deserves major reappraisal offered by this lush fluorescent pink swirl vinyl reissue, arriving just as the band gear up to unveil their swan song LP Heaven :x: Hell this March before embarking on their final run of shows.

Review: Leeds post-punk mystics The Sorcerers deliver their latest album-length aporia, I Too Am A Stranger. With the compositional vision and timeless lines of bassist Neil Innes, truly rare grooves from drummer Joost Hendrickx (Gott Street Park, Eddie Chacon) and a little cosmos of tones and melodies from reed, flute, vibraphone and keyboard player Richard Ormrod - with the up-and-coming Leeds trumpeter Olivia Cuthill chosen to augment the brass sections and regular collaborator Danny Templeman filling out the percussion palette - the overall five-piece lay down nine instrumental funk eccentrics, drawing on everything from classic Ethiopiques, to the chanbara soundtracks of Fumio Hayasaka, to the oddball genius of Moondog. An implicit dedication to cosmopolitanism in album form.

Grammy-nominated Texan psychedelic-soul band Black Pumas, led by Eric Burton and Adrian Quesada, return after their 2019 self-titled debut album - leading to the pair being put up for 'Best New Artist' in 2020 - with a bold statement to break the sophomore album curse. Lead single 'More Than a Love Song' is the perfect introduction to the sound, Burton's commanding voice riding on a wave of progressively zanier instrumental patches and choir vocal samples, with a sultry deep south tone that, oddly, reminds me of CeeLo Green. Quesada's production style is quick and loose, oozing with soul - nothing more to be expected from former member of Grammy-winning funk band Grupo Fantasma. The two describes Black Pumas as an "electric church", the synths and digital organs punctuating Burton's wistful wailing perfectly. If you're looking for a soul release to close out the year, this is it.

Dancers To A Discordant System (9:30)
Review: The acclaimed sixth full-length from Swedish prog-metal auteurs and reluctant djent pioneers Meshuggah marked a notable return to their more raw and dexterous form of hyper-technical abrasion following the dizzying Catch Thirtythree which featured one ever-shifting piece divided into 13 segments. obZen saw the group utilising a live drum setup yet again following the Drumkit From Hell software synthesizer programming which Tomas Haake had exclusively pored over, leading to a more bombastic and feral sonic scope. Teeming with chaotic abandon balanced by their reliably overt calculation, cuts such as 'Bleed' served as latter day essential additions to their already bold catalogue while the absurdly vicious closing mammoth 'Dancers to a Discordant System' has become the band's go-to closer for live performances ever since.

Review: Given The Clash's wholehearted embrace of dub and reggae in their sound, it was significant when they came to Jamaica for the World Music Festival in 1982. Now you can relive that momentous gig thanks to a high quality sound board recording which captures the energy of the performance and the band when they were riding high off the back of Combat Rock. The hits are non-stop, from 'London Calling' to 'The Guns Of Brixton', 'Bankrobber' to 'Should I Stay Or Should I Go?'. The kind of band who truly made their songs come to life on stage, no one did it like The Clash - stick this on and you'll have no choice but to agree.
