Love & Hate In A Different Time (acappella) (5:36)
Review: 'Love & Hate In a Different Time', one of the Gabriels' sonically sweetest but most lyrically hard-hitting singles to date, may seem an unusual choice to remix, even if the 2020 release did feature a stomping groove reminiscent of Northern Soul. Greg Wilson and Che have done a great job in re-imagining it for dancefloors on their 'full length remix', though, wrapping the original's simmering swings and Jacob Lusk's incredible vocals - smothered in reverb and delay - around a rolling, 1970s style disco groove. The pair also a delivers an 'extended original mix', which stretches out Gabriels' 2020 single version for greater dancefloor pleasure, and a spine-tingling, effects-laden 'acapella' take. Simply essential.

Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This) (Flying Fish dub) (2:57)
Review: Here's a cover which can't fail to please a huge crowd, as Betty Black takes on Eurythmics' eternal 'Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)'. Black has been hitting her stride as a modern day soul diva after moving on from her accomplished roots voicing some iconic UK garage tunes, and her cover of 'Cry Me A River' is no joke either. Backed up by The Family Fortune and bringing an undeniable 60s sass to her performance, she makes the track her own. As well as the full vocal version on the A-side, the B-side has the slightly edited, dubbed out 'Work Out' version for when you want to work up a sweat.

Review: Peggy Gou has long since broken out of niche dance music circles out on to the wider world thanks to her pro and well crafted DJ sets and earned ties with plenty of high-end fashion brands. Including this, she does have some fine music making credentials as her hit single '(It Goes Like) Nanana' shows - its an inescapably catchy house cut with an iconic hook that is easy to sing along to. It now arrives, having first come via her own label, on XL which will only make it reach even higher levels of ubiquity. All hail the Gou!

Review: Colleen 'Cosmo' Murphy's first White Isle-inspired compilation, Balearic Breakfast (named in honour of her long-running radio show) rightly won plenty of plaudits, in part because her musical definition of 'Balearic' (a notoriously hard-to-tie-down genre) was eclectic, colourful and personal. As you'd expect, this sequel builds on the sound and success of that set by offering up another 12 top-notch treats, many of which have never appeared on vinyl before. Highlights are plentiful throughout, from the sun-soaked psychedelic nu-disco excellence of Manalo's 'Amalfi Drive', Todd Terje's classic 2000s rework of Dolle Jolle's 'Balearic Incarnation' and Calm's self-explanatory 'Mellow Mellow Acid Dub' of Gallo's 'Abysso', to Beyond The Wizard's Sleeve's sublime revision of Midlake's 'Roscoe' and Murphy's own rework of 'Love Scenes' by Hard Feelings.

Review: Prescription and Guidance mainstay Abacus has already done enough to assure his eternal legacy in the story of deep house. But thankfully he is still turning out superbly deep sounds that are as profound and emotive as they are heady and escapist. Here he is back on Phonogramme with 'Analogue Stories Vol. 2' which comes on a unique semi-transparent 12'' vinyl. The beats are warm and humid, thickly coated with a diffuse synth hue as the rooted drums roll on smoothly. 'How U Do It' is out pick - a musical odyssey with layers of instrumentation, piano and percussion all topped off with a Moodyman vocal sample.

Review: Inokasira Rangers is a reggae band from Tokyo who've been around since the 1990s, but they're hardly (criminally) known outside of Japan. Their latest release, 'Can't Take My Eyes Off You,' promises to change that, covering Frankie Valli's timely original from the late '60s, not to mention Crystal Waters' dance-pop hit on the B. A Shibuya-kei sensibility runs through this sweet pair of covers, but the main mode is lo-fi reggae. The Waters cover is particularly charming, as if this were the original, and the song had existed as a folk song for generations prior to the glitzy rave version.

Review: The name Francisco Tenorio Cerqueira Junior, or simply Tenorio Jr, has always been clouded in mystery. Not only did the renowned Brazilian pianist pass away under dubious circumstances in Argentina back in 1976, but he also put out a surprisingly limited number of albums throughout his short-lived career. Having said that, these are all very valid reasons for why his music remains among the most coveted of items in the jazz scene. Embalo is his only album under the Tenorio Jr name, but its 1964 release is still as fresh today as it was back in a cloud of psych-driven hedonism that permeated all arts scenes back then. Fun and uplifting throughout, the album will satisfy both the jazz traditionalists and those with a slightly more left field taste. The percussion driving the arrangements isn't exactly something to ignore either, with its typical South American flair infusing sublimely into Tenorio's own excellence behind the keyboard. This is an important album which has helped to define a whole generation of later Brazilian musicians, and we recommend you to make it part of your life. It's an essential piece of history.

Review: Along with the likes of Today & Tomorrow and Untitled (God), Sault are giving their five-deep album drops from late 2022 a more ceremonious release now. The music is too deep and rich to vanish into the melee of digital data streams, and each album's distinct qualities benefits from its own space to inhabit. On a mission from God and steeped in a raw, 70s kind of sound which shirks studio slickness in favour of absolute reality, on Earth this British outfit take themselves into realms of spiritual jazz atop their keen instinct for funk. The drums tumble, the chants murmur, and there's just no arguing with the power of the ensemble and their in-the-room vibe.

Not much else is known about them but there sure is a hell of a lot of music to get stuck into. This album was dropped as one of five last year - alongside 11, AIIR, Earth and Untitled (God)) - all for free and all on the same day. Review: REPRESS ALERT!: Styrax has the rights to a great reissue of some long-lost but enduring classic cuts from Merv here. Written in 1995 and 1998 they are archetypal dub techno rollers that draw as much from the European school of Basic Channel as they do the lo-fi depths of Detroit. 'Dust' opens up with warm and humid chords over elegant and rolling beats that cannot fail to sweep you up, then 'Melted Vein' offers a more driving but no less hypnotic sound, this time with sleek tech pads peeling over the airy hi hats and bouncing kicks to take you up amongst the stars. Review: It's widely agreed that Island is one of the best works in the sprawling Current 93 catalogue. David Michael Tibet's quest into the more mysterious dimensions of our existence has yielded all kinds of musical results, but Island has a certain clarity and direction which lands beautifully. Created in 1990 alongside Icelandic composer Hilmar Orn Hilmarsson, it's an odyssey of technoid synthesis and orchestral poise, guided by strange narration and backed by some astounding singing. You'll instantly be able to recognise the tones of a young Bjork calling through the mist on opening track 'Falling' and it's quite something to hear her indomitable voice held back in the mix. That's the level this astounding album operates at, now carefully reproduced and reissued by House of Mythology.

Review: It's astonishing to think that two decades have now passed since the Cinematic Orchestra first unveiled Every Day. While not their debut studio set - 'Motion' appeared three years before - it was undoubtedly the album in which Jason Swinscoe and company perfected their widescreen, string-laden and ultra-atmospheric blend of neo-jazz and downtempo. As this re-mastered and lightly expanded anniversary edition proves, the album remains a timeless classic. It's peppered with genuine highlights, with our picks including Fontella Bass hook-up 'All That You Are' (a slow-burn, emotive, downtempo jazz gem), the jazz-funk influenced dancefloor workout 'Flite' (also featured in bonus 'original mix' form), head-nodding hip-hop-goes-jazz gem 'All Things To All Men' (featuring Roots Manuva in his pomp) and 'Man With The Movie Camera', which started life as a new soundtrack to a classic silent movie.

Review: As the Mad About label hurtles towards release number 100 it looks to the talents of Webster Lewis and The Spirit of Atlanta for two more fiery gems on a very useful 7". There are hints of Library music in the noodling melodies of the A-side jam 'El Bobo'. It has jazz-funk keys and organic drum rhythms gently tumbling below the Rhodes magic up top. The Spirit Of Atlanta's 'Freddie's Alive & Well' then picks up the pace with a more high-speed and 60s-influenced jazz-funk sound featuring some buttery smooth vocals up top. Two effective jams for sure.

The sheer beauty of these sounds is enough to uplift and energise, with chords ascending to the heavens on the opener 'Imagine The Truth' and then rolling out to infinite horizons on 'Axiom Haze'. 'Reality Engine' suspends you amongst the clouds and 'Beyond The Hyperreal' is a perfect marriage of immersive and organic sounds and hints of digital augmented reality engines. Review: They've been friends and occasional studio buddies for years, so it makes perfect sense that Lorenz Rhode and Dam Swindle's Lars Dale have decided to launch a joint project, Sound Support. This is the project's debut release and, as you'd expect given their strong track records, it's packed to the rafters with peak-time ready house treats. Title track 'Higher' sounds like the missing link between the chunky disco-house loop jams of Sound Stream and warmer, looser, jazz-funk-flavoured peak-time fare, while 'Bump Into You' is a stirring, string-drenched disco-house anthem in waiting. They open side B with a brilliantly bumpin', bassline-driven chunk of glassy-eyed, warehouse-ready nostalgia ('Work 2 It'), before layering up boogie synths, rubbery electrofunk bass, deep house chords and rolling drums on 'The Rock'.

Review: For their second release, Sound Migration has taken a deep dive into the music that soundtracked the infamous Goa party scene - initially populated by exiled hippies, but later a holiday haven for British E casualties and young Israeli ravers - between 1987 and 94. The tracks were chosen by scene stalwart (and key DJ) Ray Castle, making the blend of post-industrial EBM, early trance, new beat, formative progressive house and acid techno accurate and authentic. It's a fantastic musical snapshot that surprisingly sounds fresh and contemporary, with our picks of a very strong bunch including the bustling brilliance of FUSE's 'FU (2) (Re-Edit)', the glassy-eyed Euro synth-pop chug of Psyche's 'The Saint Became A Lush', the dreamy-but-acidic colour of Man With No Name's 'From Within', and the foreboding new beat shuffle of Public Relation's 'Eighty Eight (Instrumental)'.

'Heavy Dub' opens up with loose-limbed grooves that come with horn stabs and plenty of percussion, then 'LFA' gets a little deeper. Here the drums stay low and the mood is more menacing. The groove is detailed with just as many hots and toms, with diffuse chord stabs adding some warming soul and hints of Moodymann cool. As the grover unfolds it gets ever more funky and party starting with some great spoken words finishing it in style.

'Blow Out' is a shoe-in for any Balearic set worth its salt, pairing boxy drum machine rhythms with wistful keys and some blue-eyed soul vocal turns for a meandering ride through prime mid-decade sonic territory. Bleepy where it counts, just a little dubby around the edges and smooth up top, it's a refined, long form cut which sounds great with a modern remaster. Backed with the instrumental version on the flip, it's a no-brainer for diggers who might have balked at paying top whack for an original 85 edition.

Described by its label as a "glimpse into the future soundtrack of global dancefloors", Tahira lays down a six-track slaying of remixed secret weapons, journeying through many Latin and Afro-Brazilian classic rhythms, from the Maculele basis of Baile Funk to the rhizomatic quirk that is New Zealand samba.

Review: The mighty Cloud One is back on wax here with more super disco business on the US label P&P with this fresh new 7" platter. This project was of course masterminded by the legendary Patrick Adams and Peter Brown back in the 70s and they had plenty of catchy tunes with genius sound designs. 'Disco Juice' is one and kicks off here with soaring strings and super smooth disco grooves topped with effortless vocal coos and lush licks. On the flip is the lively 'Charleston Hopscotch' with big chord stabs and astral synths reaching up to the skies next to jazzy piano breakdowns.

Review: The Stamp label is up to its 18th outing here and once again it is an irresistible coming together of club-ready grooves with well-chosen and well-worked samples. First up the essence of one of George Benson's most iconic cuts gets reworked into a smooth house beat with the guitar kicks, vocal inflections, claps and melodies all getting you up on your toes on 'Night' (dub). 'New York To Rio' then brings some dusty deep house grooves and impassioned vocals for a more upbeat kinda party. Hand-stamped white label business this, so do not hang about.

Review: Kirk Degiorgio's As One project continues to be a beacon of inspiration within the annals of deep, melodic UK techno. As a true pioneer of the sound from the earliest days, it's impressive to see his inspiration maintain, and there's no better home for his work than De:tuned, a label dedicated to preserving the rich expression and invention of that foundational sound. On AsOne2 we're treated to an extended excursion into widescreen machine soul of the highest calibre, where melancholic chord progressions collide with restlessly original drum programming. It's quite simply exquisite, produced with an impeccable ear and loaded with sincere human feeling. This limited pressing of the album comes on red marbled wax too - highly recommended for the collectors out there.

Review: The pivotal Lobster Theremin welcomes D.Dan for a new EP that follows on from a fine run of recent form. As always, he serves up thrilling, hard hitting techno that has you clenching both your fists and your teeth as you buckle in for the white knuckle ride. "Switchblade" kicks off with distorted drums and urgent synth stabs that race along at 100 miles an hour. "Mutant Force" is just that with its tortured synths and surging drums, then burn out offers a dystopian take on mind warping Mills-ian techno. There is slightly deeper, warmer stuff on the flipside that carries you to the very fringes of the galaxy.

Review: Chicago house mainstay Glenn Underground is as good at crafting neat edits of the classics as he is serving up his own superb original house compositions. It is the former which he does here on his own label and first up on the A-side he adds his signature smooth grooves to a track but the late, great funk master Amp Fiddler. The B-side begins with his Retro mix of beatmaker extraordinaire Mos Def which has loose-limbed drums and soulful pads that reach to the heavens, then he looks to acid jazz innovators Incognito and their 'I Can See The Future' and flips it into a nice funky and drawn out house groove for vibrant dance floor fun.

Review: Originally released in 2007, the fourth album (or fifth, depending on whether you consider Half Hour Of Power to be their debut full-length) from Canadian pop-punk mainstays Sum 41 marked their first of two as a trio, with lead guitarist Dave "Brownsound" Baksh departing during this era to focus on his own Brown Brigade project. Following on from the heavily thrash-metal indebted mature left turn of Chuck, which began in earnest with the metallic early The Offspring vibe of Does This Look Infected?, while losing their axeman who brought so many of the face-melting guitar solos that peppered those LPs, Underclass Hero offered somewhat of a revert to the more jovial pop-punk found on their earlier work, yet elevated by the seasoned writing chops acquired over time. Making up for their whittled down line up with extensive use of acoustic guitars, synthesisers and a more expansive sonic scope, many have since compared the material to that of Green Day's American Idiot or My Chemical Romance's The Black Parade in terms of theatricality and concept. Clocking in at a lengthy (by punk standards) 52 minutes, and boasting some of the band's most dynamic and emotive cuts such as the emo-tinged longtime fan favourite 'Walking Disaster' as well as the anthemic opening title-track, Sum 41's near two decade old pop punk rock opera attempt deserves major reappraisal offered by this lush fluorescent pink swirl vinyl reissue, arriving just as the band gear up to unveil their swan song LP Heaven :x: Hell this March before embarking on their final run of shows.

Review: Some records become hugely expensive because they are rare, others because they are brilliant, and sometimes you get a record that is both. This is that record, a beautiful and strange mix of East and West rhythms filled with joy that now get repressed with an authentic flip back sleeve and full colour artwork reproduction. Joe Harriott & Amancio D'Silva Quartet's comprised a sax player from Jamaica, a Mumbai guitarist and special guests like Norma Winstone on improvised wordless vocals. This session was recorded in 1969 at the peak of the British jazz sound and makes for addictive listening.

Review: Even for fans of Dean Josiah Cover AKA Info's Sault collective, it is hard to keep up with their prolific output. There is little known about how is involved but they must be mad talented because over several albums already they have excelled at soul, jazz, stream of conscious lyricism, socially and politically charged funk cuts, choral music and plenty in between. Last year they dropped Earth, which was a free album (one of five including 11, AIIR, Today & Tomorrow, and Untitled (God)).) and is their ninth overall. It mixes soul with Afro-drum patterns and is another dizzyingly diverse work that leaves you in awe once more of this band's incredible achievements.

Review: Sault took an unusual path when they released five albums simultaneously in late 2022 and offered them as a free download behind a password encrypted link, but despite the mountainous 56 tracks the plaudits came rushing in. Reportedly made as an offering to our Lord and Saviour, Untitled (God) was quickly marked out as the highlight of the five sets, and now it gets its own outing as a more traditional release. The sound is out of this world, tapping into a seriously roots-y kind of funk, showered in holy reverb and recorded with an in-the-room authenticity that matches the religious slant to the music. Make no mistake, in terms of spiritual funk this is very much the realest of real deals.

Review: The mysterious London-based music collective Sault are in the process of reissuing their latest five albums on vinyl, in full, after they were simultaneously released as a humongous free digital download in late 2022. Among them comes '11', their latest project which was exclusively made available via said password-protected link and was intended as the reddest part of this quintuplet offering to God. Each album cut a distinctive oeuvre, and '11' was undeniably the funkiest, centring on the chops of the collective's in-house producer Inflo. Peak states such as 'Higher' pack raw Rhodes, knife-edge vocals and envy-inducing talents into a cinematic, soul-feeding addition to the mystery stew, while downtimers such as 'Envious' and 'River' hear the album grow increasingly boxy and heartfelt.

Review: The highly anticipated secnd full length album from Polar Inertia is here. It makes absolute sense that 'Environment Control' makes its way to the Swedish label Northern Electronics. For those that know the label and this artist, it seems like the perfect pairing. Formed in 2010, Polar Inertia has been one of the leading new producers of darker techno. The title track is opener and a sign of things to come. Futuristic techno of the upmost. These tracks engulf you with their power and depth. Some tracks are sinister and foreboding while others are atmospheric and cavernous. 'Artic Horizon' shows the deft touch of his producing ability. Sinister techno beats shrouded in a deep haze of ambience give off the impression that you are almost outside a club listening to the techno inside. For fans of techno and ambient, you are hard pressed to find a producer who does it better. These copies are sure to go fast so pick one up as quick as you can.

He has been mixing beats since he was 14, apparently, so has a broad knowledge or everything from Italo to disco to salsa as showed here. 'Candela' brings the first to start with - organic percussion and Brazillian rhythms with natty keys and wordless vocals. On the flip side is 'Los Cojones', a more high tempo and hard hitting groove with wild guitar licks ramping up the energy levels and firing up the dancefloor.

Review: Richmond Hill, the highly anticipated follow up to Masta Ace and Marco Polo's Breukelen Story, is inspired by Marco's childhood in the titular neighborhood, a small town in Ontario, just outside of Toronto. Between interstitials about Marco's passion for hip-hop and cartoons, his struggle with addiction, and the support of his parents, Marco Polo and Masta Ace tackle the issues of the day head-on with clarity, the rapper using his decades-worth of rapping experience to slice through the producer's warm soul samples and crisp percussion. A cinematic journey that explores how the past echoes through the present, the album welcomes guest appearances from notable names from all eras of rap history, including Inspectah Deck, Coast Contra, Blu, Che Noir, Speech of Arrested Development, Masta Ace's longtime collaborators Stricklin and Wordsworth and many more.

Review: The upcoming collaborative studio album between Liam Gallagher and guitarist John Squire is set to shine a refreshed light on the current state of Britpop. Consisting almost entirely of round-bellied rock, leading the charge is the arresting 'Just Another Rainbow' - here the pair are heard in neat unison, painting a picture of unfazed Gallagher-esque nonchalance in the face of a promised utopia - and 'Mars To Liverpool' - concerning the experience of realising a relationship is over before it's too late. Squire and Gallagher make for an exciting pairing, their synergy fleshed out by the album's stellar, full-bodied mix.

Review: Dark Entries takes it back to New York City in around 1982 for this previously unreleased record from Ike Yard. This cult crew was made up of Stuart Argabright, Michael Diekmann, Kenneth Compton, and Fred Szymanski and they worked in their own realm somewhere between proto-body music and No Wave peers in New York. They disbanded just a year after forming having dropped an EP on Les Disques du Crepuscule in 1981 and then a self-titled album for Factory in 1982. Using the Korg MS-20 and the Roland TR-808 they cook up plenty of hybrid electro-acoustic sounds and ramshackle rhythms that are underpinned by moody baselines and perfect to get bodies moving in the club. Whether you're a post-punk fan or lover of weird electronics, this is well worth checking out.

On the A-side, Stefano De Santis showcases a vintage spiritual jazz side with Afrobeats and plenty of funk in the drums. On the flip is a more broken boogie vibe with big disco strings courtesy of The Sunlight Orchestra. Review: Optimo continue their label with a new release from De Ambassade (Pascal Pinkert), following their 2019 album 'Duistre Kamers'. An ambassador for what? We don't know; we do know, though, that Pinkert's new music is frank, haunting and styled after every post-industrial trope under the sun, while retaining a clean and danceable appeal for the present. Star track 'Brand In De Straten' is a case in point, combining the sonics of EBM with what would otherwise be a drivingly urgent breakbeat structure.

What better way to relive it than with a special live recording like this one which was recorded just after she released her still classic 'Your Love Is King'. It was for Veronica's Rock Night TV which was broadcast on September 21, 1984 in the Netherlands and sees Sade backed by her original band featuring the members who played on her debut album Diamond Life. The sound is high quality and plenty of the most loved tunes are included in the set such as personal fav 'Cherry Pie'.
