Broken Strings (5:35)
The Stunter (5:47)
Conquering (6:15)
Lost Hours (7:07)
Review: There is no messing about on this ninth transmission from the Neighbourhood label, which comes from the studio of Yant and is comprised of well designed tool-like techno cuts that pack a serious punch. 'Broken Strings' is a linear pile drive with warped, twisted synth sounds peeling off the groove, while 'The Stunter' is stripped back to a lithe rhythm and more smooth synth details that dance up top. 'Conquering' again gets more ragged and raw with edgy, unresolved loops and some massive hi hats while last of all it is 'Lost Hours' that melts the mind with its sublime and subliminal mix of drums and synth.

The Rtm Is Burnin (5:08)
Review: 'Moon Chords' aren't just any old chords; they're the diatonic delights singularly emitted through the mitts of none other than the Portuguese producer Vil. The artist's latest EP plays back in the fashion of something not unlike a four-track lunar probe; opener 'Summer Loop' pairs hard industrial techno grooves with a stylistic smidgen of hip house and electro, while the title track follows up with a deeply hypnotic hyperventilation, with every sound sci-fi'd and tuned in key. Fireground's version of the A1 is nothing less than horrifying, while closer 'The Rtm Is Burning' warns us of the ends of techno, with its tuplet kicks (not 4x4) signallng the imminent crashing and burning of our trusty lunar spacecraft.

Review: For their second release, Sound Migration has taken a deep dive into the music that soundtracked the infamous Goa party scene - initially populated by exiled hippies, but later a holiday haven for British E casualties and young Israeli ravers - between 1987 and 94. The tracks were chosen by scene stalwart (and key DJ) Ray Castle, making the blend of post-industrial EBM, early trance, new beat, formative progressive house and acid techno accurate and authentic. It's a fantastic musical snapshot that surprisingly sounds fresh and contemporary, with our picks of a very strong bunch including the bustling brilliance of FUSE's 'FU (2) (Re-Edit)', the glassy-eyed Euro synth-pop chug of Psyche's 'The Saint Became A Lush', the dreamy-but-acidic colour of Man With No Name's 'From Within', and the foreboding new beat shuffle of Public Relation's 'Eighty Eight (Instrumental)'.

You can always rely on the Cocoon compilations to bring you a high level of quality control and an authoritative overview of the state of techno around the time of release. This mammoth six-LP set will give you a lot of music to work with, and it's featuring a dizzying cast of high-end operators starting with the mighty Stephen Brown. Each track gets a side of vinyl to itself, serving as a kind of statement for how much faith the label put in each of these 12 tracks. Amongst the best on this top-drawer comp are Daniel Avery's metallic, spellbinding 'Your Future Looks Different In The Light' and Carl Finlow's lithe electro workout 'Surface Control', but as you might well expect each track is one you'll turn to again and again to give your mix some spice.

Review: This reissue of Underground Resistance's seminal Nation 2 Nation LP is a significant moment; the group's messages of liberation and resistance feel as relevant as ever, not least given the reivisionist concept behind this EP. Perhaps, though, we should resist chinstroking too much; for the original liner notes of this seminal release criticize the over-intellectualization of characteristically African American art forms such as house, hip-hop, jungle and jazz. Even so, this 1991 classic stands as tall as ever, with sax contributions from Lenny Price helping to explore exactly what jazz would sound like if it had originated with the analogue gear that was available to UR's members, decades later.

It's simplistic beauty and heartfelt vocals make for a truly amazing piece of music that breaks all genre boundaries. Review: When you look back at the first PlayStation several landmark releases spring to mind - Resident Evil, Tekken 2, Crash Bandicoot - the list could go on much longer and should definitely include Wipeout and Wipeout 2097. Both were renowned for combining high pace, futuristic visuals with contemporary electronic club music from some of the biggest producers and acts at the time. Less remembered, in Europe at least, is the Ape Escape series, an intense party-platform title which arguably has the greatest dance music game score of all time. Comprising six tracks from that saga, this compilation of Soichi Terada's soundtracks emphasises that bold point. Opening on the crisp, punchy techno drive of 'Specters Factory', we find ourselves in suitably spooky jungle ('Haunted House'), rumbling dnb ('Spectors Castle') and roughneck hardcore bass ('Coasters'), among other made up genres. A collection which resembles Terada's amazing 1996 album, Sumo Jungle and makes a case for the Japanese enigma as one of dance music's most underrated geniuses.

Review: Marcus Suckut has proven himself to be remarkably consistent when it comes to turning out high grade techno weapons. Most of them come on his own SCKT label and now he kicks off 2024 with some more of those tantalising tools. 'Metal' is deep and stripped back with rubbery drum thuds beneath pulsating synth loops and rising hi hat tension. 'Pressure' is another deft cut that floats in deepest space with barely-there synth whispers and 'Moving Walls' then rides deep on dub techno under currents. 'Concrete' closes out this classy EP with a widescreen dub cavern fulled with watery details.

'Offshore' is first up and ride son icy, minimal and gently broken techno loops that are fluffed out with deft synths and wispy pads. 'E443' is another super paired back sound with a quiet, late-night approach to floating and loopy techno. It was a typically fierce offering from the Dutch talent and now three of its tracks get reworks by some of her finest pers. The 12" on Candy Mountain opens with 'Irreversible Cessation' (Convextion remix) which is a rumbling and futuristic techno twister, then 'Individuals From All Walks' (Rosati Remix) picks up the pace with some high speed dub techno that powers through the night in hypnotic fashion. Review: Sawf doesn't strike us as the type of producer who suffers fools gladly. Or indeed at all. The Greek music maker has a reputation for uncompromising and unforgiving electronic beats at the harsher end of the spectrum, one foot in industrial and another in techno, but with enough respect for both genres to make sure he's never made anything that feels as though it's destined for a TikTok video of 5,000 people pretending to find groove in sledgehammers. Kafas is exemplary of this, four tracks that sound as though the machines are rising up but in a way that's infinitely danceable, even if you don't normally gravitate towards dark, single strobe-lit rooms. From 'Bordo''s stepping, broken, minimalist workout, through to the stomp, clang, march and whips of 'Tsirita', this is heavy, heavy stuff but also very good indeed.

'Concept 1' here has far sighted feels - pads that disappear to infinity and convey a deep sense of space over subtle minimal rhythms. 'Concept 2' is a bright, disco-tinged electro cut and 'Concept 3' is then sophisticated astral electro with lithe lines and rubbery bass. The Convextion remix adds some weight and makes it into a voyaging techno cut full of movement.

For those that know the label and this artist, it seems like the perfect pairing. Formed in 2010, Polar Inertia has been one of the leading new producers of darker techno. The title track is opener and a sign of things to come. Futuristic techno of the upmost. These tracks engulf you with their power and depth. Some tracks are sinister and foreboding while others are atmospheric and cavernous. 'Artic Horizon' shows the deft touch of his producing ability. Sinister techno beats shrouded in a deep haze of ambience give off the impression that you are almost outside a club listening to the techno inside. Last year, someone set up an online petition calling for Warp to re-release The Other People Place's brilliant Lifestyles Of The Laptop Cafe album on wax. Happily, Warp has responded to the strength of feeling from electronica fans - most of whom bristled at the high online prices for second hand copies - and re-pressed it. Drexciya man James Stinson's 2001 solo set remains a timeless electronic classic; a perfectly pitched and immaculately produced fusion of downtempo electro rhythms, spacey electronics and twinkling synthesizer melodies. In fact, you'll struggle to find a better electro album full stop, making this reissue an essential purchase for anyone not lucky enough to own an original copy.

His intergalactic exploration is defined buy its supple lines and mind-melting synth pulses. They sound at once ancient and mystic but also futuristic and new. Sub-aquatic sounds and cosmic signifiers coexist with distant bird calls, ripples in space-time and slinky minimal rhythms that are ever-present. As the sounds roam onward, there are bubbling basslines and shimmering melodies, reverberating echoes and ricocheting beats that are always on the move. To craft a world as fulsome and idiosyncratic as this is no mean feat but Morphing Territories does it with aplomb.

He exhibits that again on this new EP for Atlantic Thunder which kick off with the gurgling synths and tanging bass notes of 'First Contact'. Silky arps are what ensure it takes flight through the cosmos, though. He specialises in combining dense, thickset grooves with mildly creepy melodic motifs, minor-key riffs and bags of unabashed energy. All those sonic traits can be clearly heard on his latest EP, which marks Campos's first vinyl outing for two years. We're particularly enjoying the panicked urgency of 'Fast Focus' and the entrancing heaviness of 'Impulse', where weirdo electronics and echoing melodic loops catch the ear, but all four cuts are undoubtedly tried and tested peak-time treats.

Review: Melody Of The Soul is focused on an emotive strain of techno which takes its cues from classical composition as much as contemporary electronic music. On this new 12", rasa Rosa takes centre stage for a debut outing which makes an instant impression thanks to the stirring fusion of youthful choral vocals and bombastic strings set to a steady 4/4 pulse. 'Kukushka' is lighter in tone, shot through with a soothing balm of pan pipes and enchanting female vocals which persist into the collaborative cut with Ranta and Miroshin, 'Kolybelnaya'. On the final track, Rosa links up with MOS for a delicate, house-oriented meditation for the most spiritual, open-hearted of dancefloor moments.

This five-disc boxset gathers all five albums they made plus material they did for movies like Matrix and Mortal Kombat Annihilation. The three tracks here are all very much from the future - opener 'Scrap' is a fizzing, electric, static-laced minimal and tech groove with deft drums and plenty of wonky lines. Review: Man of many aliases Ron Wells is undoubtedly an under-appreciated British dance music hero - a producer who delivered a string of innovative jungle-techno releases in the early 90s and has been serving up killer cuts in a variety of styles ever since. Here he dons the Jack Smooth alias (a moniker he debuted way back in 1991) for a collaborative four-tracker alongside fellow storied veteran Anthony Wilson AKA Chicago Loop. They begin in sensational fashion via the bleep-sporting analogue acid house of 'Waverider', before opting for warehouse-ready early UK techno sounds on the gnarled and nasty 'Innervision'. 'Blunderbuss' adds warped hardcore rave sounds to a sweat-soaked jackin' house beat, while 'Under The Influence' sounds like a long lost, loved-up tech-house blueprint from 1994. Stellar stuff all told.

Review: With Rod Modell putting the finishing touches to his next Deepchord album (due for release later in the year on Soma), Echospace partner Stephen Hitchell took the opportunity to record a new solo set of his own under the lesser-known Intrusion alias. "Amongst The Stars", a beguiling, 21-minute chunk of soft-focus dub techno smothered in spacey analogue electronics and the distant sound of traffic, is taken from that forthcoming album. Here, Hitchell's fine "Extended Dub" comes accompanied by a trio of varied but typically atmospheric translations from CV313 (AKA Hitchell and Modell), of which the astonishingly deep "Distintegration Dub" is probably our pick. On the second CD, Hitchell dons his ambient alias, Variant, and delivers an absorbing, CD-length "re-shape" that's as entrancing as it is quietly picturesque.

It's build on classic techno drums but overlaid with bright chords that are subtle yet infused with euphoria. There is a similar sense of heart on sleeve emption to 'Heavy Heart' which makes an art form out of high speed melancholy. Mandalay's mix is a heavyweight remix, not shy of indulging in 'tribal' additions such as marimba and djembe. By far the best remix is the Thai Mix, adding the perfect amount of weight with a rollicking acid line. Review: Former Factory Floor flummoxer and drummer Gabe Gurnsey grabs us by the groin on this gargantuan groveller of an LP, 'Diablo', his new album. Blending influences from Detroit techno, minimal post-punk and krautrock, it's an impressive follow-up to Physical, his debut solo album for Erol Alkan's Phantasy Sound. It hotly heats our hearing with high-octane hygge, and develops nicely out of his former one-off EPs and singles.

Review: Gesloten Cirkel has always been a firm favourite of the underground heads thanks to his leftfield taken techno. Now the Barcelona-based and experimental DIY imprint Selvamancer has signed him up for this effective new I Live In The Midwest EP. The title track gets things underway with meaning deep techno grooves embellished with a busy but soft-edged acid line that never stops prying. There is a more electro-bent to the kinetic 'Everything For The Dev' then things flip again into depraved and broken techno territory on 'A Better House.' Elsewhere, you'd be hard pushed to find more lo-fi and battered sound rhythms than those on the lumpy, bleepy 'You Should Post' while 'Download' is another uniquely brain-frying sound from this maverick.

Review: Dima Gastroler delivers a potent blend of heavy techno drums and dynamic acid lines here while also expressing his reflections on global imbalances through his music. Mixing up melody, emotion, and ambiguity, Gastroler's sound is a tribute to classic electronic music that melds vintage equipment with contemporary production techniques. With a penchant for experimentation and transcending genre boundaries, Gastroler prioritizes the emotional resonance of his compositions. For him, music is a medium to evoke genuine feelings and emotions, driving his creative process beyond mere sonic exploration. To sum up - emotive techno with vintage vibes.

Quo Vadis (Frank Kusserow remix) (8:55)
Review: Some techno classics earn their status with the barest of elements - and that's absolutely true of G-Man's 'Quo Vadis'. Originally released by ex-LFO man Get Varley in 1995, it's a devastatingly simple premise of a stark, subtly swung beat and funked up dub techno chord trimmed down to a fine point. That's pretty much all that's needed to render a timeless favourite which will do the damage on any floor, whether it's a big room techno situation or a push-on-through tech house marathon you're faced with. On this reissue for Back To Life we also get a remix from Frank Kusserow on the flip, which wisely retains the fundamental essence of the track and just gives it some chunkier drums.

Review: With its' 15th birthday imminent, De:tuned delivers another must-check release: a brand-new instalment in Future Sound of London's legendary, rave-era Pulse series of EPs. Created using music recorded, but never released, by the duo - under a variety of aliases - during the late 80s and early 90s, Pulse 5 represents a significant addition to the vast FSOL catalogue. There's plenty to set the pulse racing throughout, from the crunchy, fuzzy hip-hop beats and ghostly electronics of FSOL's 'Dialects' and the sub-heavy, bleep-infuenced brilliance of Yage's 'Sun Risen', to the intergalactic breakbeat hardcore hedonism of Smart Systems' 'The New Generation', the deep space proto-d&b of Ingo Tribe's 'Obstinta' and the glassy-eyed ambient techno of FSOL's 'Reasonable Acquiries'.

Review: Given that Four Tet's recent 0181 LP was comprised of material from Kieran Hebden's archives, and last year's Pink was largely compiled of tracks from the previous 18 months of 12" releases, it seems fair to say that Beautiful Rewind is his first proper album since 2010's There Is Love In You, and as such, it arrives with some degree of expectation. The past few years have seen the producer engage increasingly with the dancefloor, and these rhythms are most definitely present across the LP, particularly in the jungle breaks of "Kool FM", pirate radio-influenced techno of "Buchla" and hesitant dubstep style rhythms of "Parallel Jalebi". For the most part however Beautiful Rewind is as varied as the likes of Rounds and There Is Love In You, with the minimalist kosmische of "Ba Teaches Yoga", analogue gurgles of "Crush" and dawn chorus sounds of closer "Your Body Feels" all as beautiful as his most enduring tracks.

Review: Following a relatively quiet year which saw him release just two (admittedly must-check) EPs via Dub Recordings and PLURm Ryan James Ford gets his 2024 campaign underway with his first 12-inch for Clone's Basement Series in almost four years. Inspired in part by the crumbling, concrete-clad surrounds of Tower Hamlets in London, Ford offers up a swathe of Brutalist techno workouts tailor-made for sweat-soaked peak-time sessions and pitch-black basement parties. He begins with the dystopian, funk-fuelled heaviness of 'Bellmarsh', before reaching for fiendishly distorted beats, jacking bass and intergalactic synth stabs on 'Dimples'. 'Extendo' sees the sometime Happy Skull contributor pepper another surging and dusty techno groove with melancholic melodies and vintage Autechre style motifs, while 'Cheese Bin' is as psychedelic as it is dark and foreboding.

Review: When techno is done right you just can't beat it, can you? Check the opening track from this new EP from Ryan James Ford, for example. 'Xtra Tall Tee' has a physical, unrelenting low end with just the right amount of distortion to make it sleazy, and is overlaid with hurried synth sequins that bring neon light and curious energy while some scratchy background vocal and raw as hell snares finish it in perfect style. There is a more trance vibe to 'Tricycle' (Proto mix), a sleeknesss to 'Sensitive Needs' deeper cosmic beauty to 'Bodge' (Closing mix) that makes this one a near perfect EP.

It is there that they return with what is presumably a new series, Refreshing Part, as this is installment one. They have a frantic and frantic techno sounds rooted in the 90s school of box banging. 'Never Sleep' opens on that manic tip before 'Gaze' is a little more stripped back but no less potent. Elsewhere the caustic textures of 'Into A Diamond' are almost enough make your eyes water.

EP that came out in 1999 on Path - still a digger's favourite and a gorgeous piece of techno. He's back out of the blue on Path with the dark and molecular sonics of "Path To Hell" on the A-side, followed by the slower and more hypnotic "Path To Heaven", and the wonky sways of electro in "Heaven Or Hell"; both the B-side tunes are the ones for the corner dwellers. Sick; please do not sleep on this.

Review: Rocket Science is the latest EP by the standout Netherlands techno producer Eversines. It is also the first release by the new label Jamming Is Life. This record is all about the late-night sounds. The techno is richly infused with a bit of Goa and psy-trance that adds to the mythical and tribal sound like in the example, 'Act'. Each track here prides itself on constantly evolving the sounds in motion with an upwards trajectory or energy. These are properly sequenced tracks that go somewhere and not just placed sounds on a computer. Which in turn, makes them great for the dancefloor. Unlike older Psy-trance, these tempos are right in the sweet spot for house and techno lovers alike. 'M' is one of our early favorites on this clutch piece of hedonism while the acid line in 'Jamming Is Life' is pure flashback inducing business. The Jamming is Life label is starting out strong with this one.

Review: The DDS label, short for Distort Decay Sustain, has given artists like Demdike Stare a platform on which to express themselves through over the years, but it was really Equiknoxx's LP from 2016, Bird Sound Power, which opened their doors to a whole new category of listener. In fact, it was that LP, with all its stunning, dub-wise experimentation, which has led to Mark Ernestus being called up for a pair of remixes. As you probably know, this is a rare case, so this 12" is sort of a special piece - "Congo Get Slap" is given the pure Ernestus rundown, with a charging, minimalistic percussion being swallowed whole by the raucous dub stabs caving in from all angles; the remix of "Flagged Up" is a much slower, more brooding affair in the same vein as the mythical cuts residing on imprints like Basic Channel and Chain Reaction - nothing but deep, meditative dub flexing for the mind. BIG!

Review: Much loved doom monger emo kids Depeche Mode have always been ripe for remixing by new generations of electronic music artists and so it is that there 'My Favourite Stranger' gets a series of re-rubs here on Columbia. Tech house mainstay Boris Brejcha remixes first and elongates the grooves with mournful pads up top. The Ela Minus remix of the same tune brings some extra textured and darker moods and the best is saved till the last if you ask us. The Lond Island Sound remix is high speed and tinged with electro synth work as the moody vocals echo about the mix to trippy effect.

As always, he serves up thrilling, hard hitting techno that has you clenching both your fists and your teeth as you buckle in for the white knuckle ride. "Switchblade" kicks off with distorted drums and urgent synth stabs that race along at 100 miles an hour. "Mutant Force" is just that with its tortured synths and surging drums, then burn out offers a dystopian take on mind warping Mills-ian techno. There is slightly deeper, warmer stuff on the flipside that carries you to the very fringes of the galaxy.

To be fair, Live Excursions first surfaced digitally last year via their own Bandcamp site, and now makes its way onto CD for the first time. The recordings themselves are vintage too, having been captured at a warehouse party in Detroit back in 2001. According to the Echospace website, the tracks were performed live using only outboard kit and a 16-channel mixer, with no computer trickery. Whatever the method, the resultant tracks are long, trippy, and immersive forays into dub techno and ambient in CV313's trademark style.

Review: Spiral Tribe's Network 23 label take a hyper-kinetic trip back into the archives for this 12", pulling out classic material from core members Crystal Distortion and 69db. 'Jailbreak 96' originally came out as an untitled track on 1995 release Part 2 and it sounds as punishing as ever as Simon Carter rides bloated kicks and annihilating textures turned up to a rampant tempo. We're not sure on where 'Fridgetrax 2' was pulled from, but it's a vintage slice of freetekno nonetheless, piling on the psychoactive pressure in a style which aligns with the harder, faster strains of techno knocking about these days. On the flip, 69db's 'Night Life' keeps the pressure up - free party fodder doesn't get any more real than this.

Review: Groovin Italy landed a monumental reissue for the label with C'hantal's 'The Realm'. Originally released way back in 1990 on the dance and early Brooklyn based Powertraxx records. Staying true to the original release, it offers the 'Love In D Minor' mix but does one better in tucking in the Acapella version to the A-side so the B-side 2 versions have a little more room to breathe. The added bonus has to be putting on the more rare "Wild Club mix' to the party along with the original 'Rave Mix'. All and all, a very packed reissue of some of the best versions of the track, all on one record. This might just hold the number one spot for best techno reissue so far of 2024.

Review: Mark Broom is one of the mainstays of the global underground. The UK titan has a recognisable take on house and techno genre that is underpinned by slamming kick and that comes to bare once more now as he lands on fellow legend Radio Slave's Rekids label. These four cuts bring a more house feel to start with as 'Klashjamz' layers up disco strings and vocals into something joyous. 'Showtime' has a garage slip to the loopy, silky drum rotations and 'HighNRG' throws it back with big stabs, percussive drums and chopped up vocal shards. 'Jazz Ting' is an aptly named closer with plenty of steamy sax notes of raw, loopy grooves.

Suburban Hunting sees Ho deliver his debut Broken English Club album, featuring some 11 tracks of primitive electronics and cinematic pseudo techno cuts. Tunes like "Vacant", "Derelict", or "Scum" all share a loose techno framework, but the real aesthetic is much vaster than that, verging on remnants of post-punk, industrial and all that goodness and hybrid class that came out of the late 1980's. It's another fine addition to the sublime Cititrax discography, and we recommended it just as much as the previous numbers.

The Swiss duo first appeared on Ilian Tape with Q back in 2021, and they're sounding stronger than ever on this latest missive. If 'Multiplex' brings a cybernetic sheen to headsy 140, then 'Is It Warm' does similar work with techy d&b as the pair dice up breakbeats with precision and drape exquisite, shimmering pads over the ruffness. There's also space for crafty techno propulsion on 'Broke' and high-tempo trippiness on '83 Steps', making this a versatile, consistently brilliant release from a rising force in the scene.

He hails from Spain and once again shows his class here with a little help from the vocals of Viktoriia. His brand of techno is punchy and direct but not sort of nuance - the opener has some funk in the kicks and mystery in the scratchy vocals then 'Unknown Error' gets unhinged and disorientating in terms of its twisted synths. 'Don't Call Me Baby' is bubbly, wet minimal and 'La Noche' shuts down with surging synths, unrelenting drums and hammering hits.

Taking inspiration from techno, jack, industrial and punk, An-I successfully drew a line under some of the Berlin-based artist's previous disco-flavoured endeavours. And then some! If you like the Kino-I 12" you will love the new triplet of An-I productions housed on this appropriately titled Gutz 12". The title track alone should come with a health warning; such is the furious onslaught of machine funk it contains, whilst the unnerving "Rut" is the most schizophrenic production you will hear this year. Best of all id closing track "Save Us" sounds like a cross between in Aeternam Vale and Silent Servant. Pressed on a rather thick and dashing slab of magenta orange vinyl!
