Review: Annette Brissett grew up in the USA even though she is a noted reggae vocalist. Her influences are the likes of Otis Redding and the Wailers and she also plays several instruments. 'Hard To Find' is one of her most well-known tunes and it pairs electronic reggae with prog rock guitars and her own soulful vocals. It's curious and compelling and has some funk deep in its bones. The version is provided by Wackies Rhythm Force who strip the vocals and make more of the noodling prog guitars and dubby swagger.

Review: "Huxley's Howl" by Bay-area keyboard savant Howard Wales was originally released as a 7in single in the early '70s on his own Costal Records imprint. Luv N'Haight is proud to present the first official reissue of this classic slice of mid-tempo, instrumental funk, loaded with stabbing horns, explosive Hammond organ and heavy drums with a nice dose of psychedelic vibes to round out it out. The B-side "My Blues" chugs along at a slower pace, with a "bluesier" sound as the title suggests while keeping the same killer psych flavor as the A-side.

Review: Long-serving New Orleans soul man Willie West has previous form when it comes to collaborating with The Soul Investigators, Finland's funkiest backing band. He's joined forces with them plenty of times over the years, though this is their first joint release for nearly two years. "I Just Can't Leave You Alone" is particularly sweet, with West's heart-felt vocal combining brilliantly with guest Jimi Tenor's drifting flute lines and the band's rich jazz guitars, fuzzy grooves and '60s style production. The sublime quality of their playing and production is even clearer on the accompanying Instrumental take.

Review: The Street Knowledge "45 series" appears to have been set up to educate heads on original 1990s hip-hop jams, or at the very least deliver fresh pressings of some seriously classic cuts. This inaugural release begins with Warren G and Nate Dogg's 1994 heater "Regulate", a deep and seductive number that makes great use of samples from Michael McDonald's teary blue-eyed soul classic "I Keep Forgetting". Flip to the B-side and you'll find Luniz 1995 hit "I Got 5 On It", a cut that's been bitten, reworked and re-made umpteen times in the 24 years that have passed since it was first released. As this reissue proves, the Oakland duo's original version is still streets ahead of the rest.

Review: Dave Welding's Soul Junction label is back with another limited edition 45rpm that keeps up the fine run of recent form. These two gems are the work of the late great Willie Williams, a blind singer from Chicago who was discovered performing in the Windy City's local clubs. He was signed to ABC records in 1966 and put out only a couple of other well received singles. 'Give It All I Got' is a beautiful piece with raw drum work and lush vocal backing harmonies next to a gentle piano line. It is stirring stuff while the flips-side 'Do You Understand' is more upbeat with its funky riffs, more great backing vocals and a rolling beat that locks you in.

Review: 40 years young: Wood, Brass & Steel's eponymous debut album enjoys a highly timely reissue and it still sounds every bit as funky ("Theme Song"), soulful ("Working On A Dream") and emotional ("My Darling Baby") as it did in 76. Review: If there's one seasonal single that's as timeless as it is unashamedly cheesy, then it's Last Christmas by Wham! Originally released in December 1984, radio stations quickly began to realise that the constant rotations of the track would cease as December would dissipate. The fact that the song came packaged as a double A-side with 'Everything She Wants' on the flip, meant a sleeper hit was hidden and waiting in the wings to take up almost equal spins as 1985 dawned upon would be listeners (the track even made it number one in the USA on the Billboard Hot 100). Repressed on translucent green vinyl, this 7" re-establishes both the classic Chrimbo anthem and the deceptively exceptional secondary A-side onto a singular slice of miniature PVC to bump out every festive season for that extra ho-fi experience (Holiday Fidelity).

Review: Sonic Wax is dropping a couple of Jackie Wilson specials this month. Both are one-sided and limited edition 7"s, one being 'Light My Fire' and the other being this, 'Don't You Know I Love You', originally on Brunswick and found on Jackie's 1972 long player Beautiful Day. It's a life-affirming bit of upbeat and optimistic soul powered by soaring Philly strings, happy flute melodies and those beautiful, burning male vocals as well as some soothing female coos in the background. It's a northern soul gem that still does the business.

Review: Byron Bucknor has established the Sid Buck reissue label to honour his late father's musical legacy, and he's kicking off in fine style with this classic single originally released in 1974. Cousin of the fabled Sir Coxsone Dodd, Sid Bucknor was an influential sound engineer at Studio One in his own right, not to mention gracing the likes of Treasure Isle, King Tubby's, Joe Gibbs' and Channel One amongst many others. On the A side of this single we get the heavy, urgent roots of Leroy Wallace's 'Rob Oil' backed up with Keith 'Slim' Smith delivering a sweet rendition of evergreen soul classic 'My Girl'. It's everything you want from a perfect reggae 45, and will no doubt hip a few more people to Bucknor's legacy.

Review: Witch singles are well known by collectors of worldly sounds, but they have never sounded as good as they do now on this reissue seres by Sharp-Flat. Each one has been remastered from the original analogue tapes for the first time ever. These two are taken from the Zambian band's seminal 'Movin' On' LP from 1980. At that time they had survived the Zamrock years and built up a fine catalogue of psych and prog sounds but then took inspiration from the newly emerging electronic sounds of the 80s and reaches new highest. Review: The Circle of Confusion are a Swiss dub production duo, who, adding to their fast-growing repertoire of releases, now drop 'Soul Of A Lion', which features Wayne Paul, an English reggae singer who was mostly active in the 90s and 2000s. Though Paul disappeared from the scene towards the end of that period, he now returns with a defiant message of big-feline hope and reminiscence, sung against a modern reggae backing with a polished, 80s roots feel. Review: It's 20 up for Positive Pay For Japan, who have got a wealth of funky 7"s out this month alone. It comes from Milton Wright, a big presence on the Miami soul scene throughout the 1970s. He was one of the many siblings in the Wright family alongside Betty, Phillip, Charles and Jeanette and also served as a justice on the Boston Municipal Court from 1998 to 2004. This 45 serves up 'Let's Take A Break,' a slow motion and deeply funky number with poignant bass notes and Milton's stylish vocals up top next to plenty of big horns. The party picks up with 'You Like To Dance,' a brighter tune with a positive vibration.

Review: Six Minute Mile has rightly got plenty of attention for its first few outings and their early good work connotes with this eight 7". It's from Ohio's Wesley Bright who has joined forces with The Means of Production and New York's Ben Pirani, and is a lovely mid-tempo roller that reminds of balmy summer nights. The tune comes in two parts and opens with lovely Rhodes chords that are a great foundation for the tenor vocals of Wesley. Review: With roots as a backing singer for Stevie Wonder, Wycoff went on to become a soul ambassador throughout the early 80s. This 1982 reissue is one of the best examples of his silky, heartfelt delivery... "Looking Up To You" is a dynamic love song where traces of big 70s production build and build throughout. "(Do You Really Love Me) Tell Me Love", meanwhile, was only ever released as a B-side. Its 80s production counter the dramatics of the A-side with cool synthetic perfection. Reissues don't get much broader in production or sweeter in sound than this.

Review: Geno Washington & the Ram Jam Band were an U.K. based soul band, active between 1965 - 1968. Born William Francis Washington in Evanston, Indiana, Geno joined the airforce marching band and, after leaving high-school, was transferred to England - a week before his 18th birthday. His previously unreleased session recording featured here is 'If This Is Love (I'd Rather Be Lonely)' Also featured is 1965 Northern Soul number 'The Drifter', another unreleased Pye recording originally recorded in America in 1965. It was released in the U.K. the next year, where it was covered by English-Canadian Long John Baldry.

Review: For their latest trawl into the world of rare soul and funk, Outta Sight has decided to reissue Lou Lawton's brilliant "Knick Knack Patty Wack", a punchy, horn-heavy and occasionally stomping 1967 cut that regularly changes hands for eye-watering sums online. Part of the appeal to collectors and DJs is the track's association with the British northern soul scene. The same could be said of Walter Wilson's "Love Keeps Me Crying", another 1967 recording that was only ever released in limited quantities as a "promo-only" 7" single. While not as sought-after as the Lou Lawton track on the A-side, its every bit as cheery and life affirming (despite the presence of rather melancholy lyrics above the driving Motor City production).

Review: Outta Sight's latest monthly rare soul missive contains hard-to-find and overlooked classics from "hard-hitting" New Jersey vocal group Soul Brothers Six and New Orleans Rhythm and Blues man Willie Tee. It's the former's wonderfully sweet and loose "I'll Be Loving You" (first released in 1966, fact fans) that takes pride of place on the A-side, serving up a lightly sauteed soul take on the rhythm and blues template. Willie Tee's 1967 jam "Walking Up A One Way Street", a summery affair blessed with a superb horn section, leisurely groove and brilliant lead vocal from the man himself, can be found on the B-side.

Review: The crucial Original Gravity label is busy this month with three red hot new 7"s all dropping in quick succession. The top-notch funk crew has this spilt 7" from Umoza Music Project and The Woodfield Road Allstars up here on limited wax. The a-side is a sunny bit of original rousing 70s reggae direct from the islands. Backing vocalists provide plenty of butter while the lead laments a love lost and the rhythm rolls on. On the back side is a much more stoner-paced and funk drenched laidback instrumental with Balearic guitar licks that look to the stars as organ chords warm you through and the rocksteady rhythm gently sways to and fro. Two gems for sure.

Review: Original rudeboy Roy Ellis is best known for his Symarip association. Here he's back with an all-new 7" that shows he is still on top of his game. 'Rudy Skankin' On The Moon' actually first dropped as a set of vocals by Melbourne Douglas on Original Gravity's Reggae Dynamite Vol. 2. Now it comes as a sequel to 'Skinhead Moonstomp' which was an OG skinhead reggae anthem by Ellis's Symarip. Review: Given that Neil Anderson's Original Gravity label is an unashamed tribute to the 1960s ska and rocksteady sounds he loves (with occasional diversions into rhythm & blues and reggae), it's little surprise to see the imprint's house band, Woodfield Road Allstars, take on 'Shank I Sheck', a much-loved 'riddim' that was written, and first recorded, by Baba Brooks way back in 1964. The Woodfield Road Allstars version is a hazy, head-nodding rocksteady treat rich in heady Hammond organ licks, languid trumpet solos and jazz guitars aplenty. Over on the flip, Prince Deadly (likely an alias for Anderson) provides a lightly rewritten riff on the same core ingredients, naturally pushing the trumpet to the fore while reaching for dub-style effects and other 'versioning' studio tricks.

Review: London reggae band Junior Dell & The D-Lites are a clever exercise in nostalgia, being a contemporary project under the wing of modern reggae label Original Gravity, but for all intents sounding like a full-blown lost rarity from the late 1970s. Their latest of at least six new seven-inches to grace our ears in recent years, 'Last Night Reggay', is one-such midnight ditty, perfectly capturing the conflicting emotions of shame and relaxation one often experiences after a tumultuous night out. The version by Woodfield Rd. Allstars is just as boxy and spacious, and comes with an out-of-this-world synth solo.

Review: Delroy Williams dropped plenty of reggae heat back throughout the 1970s, 1980s and on into the 90s. He has a buttery smooth voice and often layers it up over dub with digital sounds and sleek synths, such as here. 'Keep Loving' is one of his best from back in 1989 and now it arrives again via Only Roots on this fresh 7". The original on the A-side is mid-tempo and fresh, with clean drums and crisp hits and squelchy bass underlining it all. The version allows that futuristic production to really shine through.

Review: Back in 1973 Big Youth started the Negusa Nagast label, translating as the king of kings in Ethiopian. The first single was a split 7" from Leroy Willacy, also known as Cookey Monster, and Big Youth himself. Nearly 50 years on, this treasured record is back in print and it sounds as magical as ever. Willacy's 'Far Beyond The Blue' is a powerful slice of roots reflecting on the mire of slavery which forms a backdrop to so much of reggae's emotional impact. On the flip Youth delivers a deejay cut which rolls slow and easy, the legendary singer freestyling over the lazy groove in his inimitable fashion.

Review: It was the iconic Copacabana Records that put out this classic MPB back in 1964. That makes 'Um Balanco pra voce' by Os Rouxinois one of the oldest releases in Mr Bongo's Brazil45 series and it is also one of the best. Arnaud Rodrigues wrote the tune which is a superb mix of exotic funk, bossa nova rhythms and quirky melodies from a five-track 7" of tunes that the band originally used to play on TV. On the other side, 'O Viajante' is the sort of irresistibly sunny sound that quickly wins your heart and is sure to light up any dancefloor.

Review: Miles Away Records are proud to introduce their latest single to land on the label: the cosmic soul gem 'Super Star' by Ruth Waters and the State Of Mind Show Band. Ruth 'Silky' Waters was best known for her two disco-infused albums Never Gonna Be The Same and Out In The Open, produced by the late, great John Davis. 'Super Star', however, was released on the tiny independent KMBA Recordings label in the late 1970s, and draws on the twin wells of modern soul and gospel, lending both a touch of cosmic goodness. On the flip, there's 'Super Star Pt.2', which plunges deeper into the cosmic essence of the track by way of both extended guitar and synth solos; both tracks are stupendios in their own rights, making this a hotly versatile release for a far-and-wide DJ demographic.

It found him exploring what it means today to be a Black man in the U.S and features plenty of top guests such as Posdnuos (of De La Soul), Big Daddy Kane, and Guilty Simpson. This is one of the best tunes from the album so it gets its own pressing and new remix. 'Manifestin' (feat Angelo Arce) has hard bars and rugged, prickly hip hop beats. On the flip is a version featuring The Soulyghost and remixed into a splashy, broken beat workout with yearning vocals and hefty drum kicks.

Review: Tyrone Washington's 'Submission' is a timeless gem that gets pressed up to 7" here both in original form but also with the masterful Kenny Dope remix on the flip. The A-side is a hard edge jazz number with squealing reeds and tumbling drums, chord stabs and an insistent and rather dark energy. Kenny makes it into a much more smooth number with drums that nails you to the floor. The sax stabs are more muted and fade into the background as the menacing chords come to the fore. Two vital tunes for the collection for sure.

Review: Paul Murphy's Jazz Room Records serve up two underground dance floor hits from the London circuit here. Latin supergroup Wild And Infectious's 'Caliente' takes care of the a-side and has banging piano riffs and heavy bass laid down by Descarga originator Cachao, all run through with some superb driving vibes from Tany Gil with a big percussion meltdown from Walfredo De Los Reyes added for good measure. ON the reverse, The Vienna Art Orchestra serve up a great new version of a Bud Powell classic.

Review: Buffalo rap icon WestsideGunn gets the reissue treatment courtesy of Hoffstein on this tidy 7", which brings the DJ Daringer-produced 'Rolack's' back in reach. On the A side we get the vocal and instrumental, which finds the man known as Alvin Worthy flowing in his distinctive, tightly-wound style over a warm and soulful beat from Daringer. The instrumental lets the beatsmith's cuts fly, and there's plenty of them. On the flip things get darker as 'Over Gold' strikes a noirish tone before 'Free Ike Free Kiki' slows down and freaks out in a haze of low-slung brilliance.

Review: Japanese imprint Ultra Vybe is midway through a seven-inch series focusing on some of the many gems tucked away on albums released by legendary U.S "funky jazz" label Groove Merchant in their early 1970s. Their latest picks are taken from pianist Larry Willis's 1973 set "Inner Crisis". You'll find the album's title track - a warm, mesmerizing and surprisingly melancholic fusion of restless organ lines, jammed-out electric piano solos, classic jazz horns and fussy grooves - on side B, with "Out On The Coast" on the A. This jaunty jazz-funk affair is far more hard-hitting, thanks in no small part to some rousing sax lines, blistering funk drums, razor-sharp jazz guitars and a seriously heavy bassline.

Review: American jazz-funk organist Reuben Wilson is probably best known for his 1976, Chess-released slammer "Got To Get Your Own". He released plenty more tasty treats before and after that, including a raft of fine albums. It's on one of those sets (1972's "The Sweet Life", fact fans) that these songs first featured. Wilson's version of Marvin Gaye classic "Inner City Blues" is particularly potent. It features the organist playing a jazzy lead melody that replaces Gaye's original vocal, note for note. It's brilliantly done, with his backing band providing stellar support via a heavy, low-slung take on the song's familiar groove. Over on the flip Wilson layers up organ and sax lines on a suitably soft focus cover of Clifton Davis's teary-eyed soul favourite "Never Can Say Goodbye".

Wipe The Needle does a superb job of harking back to that legendary time in the 90s when dusty drums and crispy claps were all we wanted to hear. First up he tackles the iconic 'Shook One's by Moby Deep and flips it into a slow motion groove that is deep as you like. On the flip, Jay-Z's 'Ignorant Shit' (Wipe The Needle remix) is more defined by the original bars, but the beats are just as sick.
