Review: With roots as a backing singer for Stevie Wonder, Wycoff went on to become a soul ambassador throughout the early 80s. This 1982 reissue is one of the best examples of his silky, heartfelt delivery... "Looking Up To You" is a dynamic love song where traces of big 70s production build and build throughout. "(Do You Really Love Me) Tell Me Love", meanwhile, was only ever released as a B-side. Its 80s production counter the dramatics of the A-side with cool synthetic perfection. Reissues don't get much broader in production or sweeter in sound than this.

Review: It's 20 up for Positive Pay For Japan, who have got a wealth of funky 7"s out this month alone. It comes from Milton Wright, a big presence on the Miami soul scene throughout the 1970s. He was one of the many siblings in the Wright family alongside Betty, Phillip, Charles and Jeanette and also served as a justice on the Boston Municipal Court from 1998 to 2004. This 45 serves up 'Let's Take A Break,' a slow motion and deeply funky number with poignant bass notes and Milton's stylish vocals up top next to plenty of big horns. The party picks up with 'You Like To Dance,' a brighter tune with a positive vibration.

Review: Given that Neil Anderson's Original Gravity label is an unashamed tribute to the 1960s ska and rocksteady sounds he loves (with occasional diversions into rhythm & blues and reggae), it's little surprise to see the imprint's house band, Woodfield Road Allstars, take on 'Shank I Sheck', a much-loved 'riddim' that was written, and first recorded, by Baba Brooks way back in 1964. The Woodfield Road Allstars version is a hazy, head-nodding rocksteady treat rich in heady Hammond organ licks, languid trumpet solos and jazz guitars aplenty. Over on the flip, Prince Deadly (likely an alias for Anderson) provides a lightly rewritten riff on the same core ingredients, naturally pushing the trumpet to the fore while reaching for dub-style effects and other 'versioning' studio tricks.

Review: Witch singles are well known by collectors of worldly sounds, but they have never sounded as good as they do now on this reissue seres by Sharp-Flat. Each one has been remastered from the original analogue tapes for the first time ever. These two are taken from the Zambian band's seminal 'Movin' On' LP from 1980. At that time they had survived the Zamrock years and built up a fine catalogue of psych and prog sounds but then took inspiration from the newly emerging electronic sounds of the 80s and reaches new highest. Review: Gamm has become known for its edits of disco, house and jazz classics but back in the day it used to drop red hot hip hop reworks of golden era sounds. It seems they are now getting back to that with this new three party 7" inch series which is focussed on the American east coast. Lee Gomez aka Wipe The Needle has produced these beats, which are all new, but the vocals will be recognised to hip hop heads. Review: American jazz-funk organist Reuben Wilson is probably best known for his 1976, Chess-released slammer "Got To Get Your Own". He released plenty more tasty treats before and after that, including a raft of fine albums. It's on one of those sets (1972's "The Sweet Life", fact fans) that these songs first featured. Wilson's version of Marvin Gaye classic "Inner City Blues" is particularly potent. It features the organist playing a jazzy lead melody that replaces Gaye's original vocal, note for note. It's brilliantly done, with his backing band providing stellar support via a heavy, low-slung take on the song's familiar groove. Over on the flip Wilson layers up organ and sax lines on a suitably soft focus cover of Clifton Davis's teary-eyed soul favourite "Never Can Say Goodbye".

Review: Reggae mainstay Delroy Wilson dropped this easy soul skanker back in the mid-70s. Now the original Clocktower label reissues it again on a limited 7" as the OG has become hard to find and much coveted. It's a brilliantly laidback tune and warming organ chords at its core, lazy drum hits and fat bottom kick down below, all finished with the laissez vocal coolness of Delroy. Flip it over for an even more slowed down and sensuous rhythm version, but the a-side with its sweet vocal takes some beating if you ask us.

Review: Discodelic does not muck around when it comes to putting out their music on vinyl - they serve up a standard black version but often also a cured pressing alongside it. And that's what we have here - a yellow and red splattered vinyl 7" with a booklet featuring some backstory, and all heavily limited to just 100 copies. Musically this one packs a punch too with Wilson Boys opening up with 'Funky Bocas' - a busy Afro rhythm with tight interwoven guitar lines and big vocal cries. Review: Japanese imprint Ultra Vybe is midway through a seven-inch series focusing on some of the many gems tucked away on albums released by legendary U.S "funky jazz" label Groove Merchant in their early 1970s. Their latest picks are taken from pianist Larry Willis's 1973 set "Inner Crisis". You'll find the album's title track - a warm, mesmerizing and surprisingly melancholic fusion of restless organ lines, jammed-out electric piano solos, classic jazz horns and fussy grooves - on side B, with "Out On The Coast" on the A. Review: Dave Welding's Soul Junction label is back with another limited edition 45rpm that keeps up the fine run of recent form. These two gems are the work of the late great Willie Williams, a blind singer from Chicago who was discovered performing in the Windy City's local clubs. He was signed to ABC records in 1966 and put out only a couple of other well received singles. 'Give It All I Got' is a beautiful piece with raw drum work and lush vocal backing harmonies next to a gentle piano line. It is stirring stuff while the flips-side 'Do You Understand' is more upbeat with its funky riffs, more great backing vocals and a rolling beat that locks you in.

It is a wonderfully sweet modern and crossover soul sound that is actually a cover version of the popular Lil Major Williams original of the same name. Review: An avalanche of brilliant soul reissues are coming on Kent this month. This one is taken from the Scepter/Wand tapes on which Maurice Williams and Walter Wilson have one release each. Maurice Williams' 'Look My Way' is one of his best tracks with its classy horns and soaring vocals next to 60s strumming and smooth grooves. Walter Wilson's 'Not Now But Later' is actually by an artist alias of Tommy Keith who wrote and recorded some key soul music. It's a self-penned ballad that will melt any heart.

He has a buttery smooth voice and often layers it up over dub with digital sounds and sleek synths, such as here. 'Keep Loving' is one of his best from back in 1989 and now it arrives again via Only Roots on this fresh 7". The first single was a split 7" from Leroy Willacy, also known as Cookey Monster, and Big Youth himself. Nearly 50 years on, this treasured record is back in print and it sounds as magical as ever. Review: Cali rapper WILDCHILD hails from the legendary Lootpack crew but Omowale was his powerful new solo album. It found him exploring what it means today to be a Black man in the U.S and features plenty of top guests such as Posdnuos (of De La Soul), Big Daddy Kane, and Guilty Simpson. This is one of the best tunes from the album so it gets its own pressing and new remix. 'Manifestin' (feat Angelo Arce) has hard bars and rugged, prickly hip hop beats. Review: New Orleans funk outfit The Wild Magnolias were active in the mid 70s, releasing two albums and then regrouping in the 90s. Their sound is in step with their more renowned Louisiana peers, but certainly running hotter than the likes of The Meters. "Handa Wanda" is a stirring, effervescent call and response epic that shows the band at their best, rocking a wall of sound approach that keeps the pressure up the whole way through. "(Somebody Got) Soul, Soul, Soul" is a more fluid track, but it's certainly no slouch in the energy department either. This is hi-octane funk to get people shaking and sweaty.

Review: .There's plenty to talk about with The Who's historic show at Fete De L'Humanite, a huge open-air event hosted by L'Humanite, the main newspaper of the French Communist Party. For starters, on the day - Saturday 9th September, 1972 - an estimated 400,000 people were in attendance, a crowd size that dwarves pretty much anything we can think of today, and remains the band's largest ever gig. Taking to the stage as evening set in, they set to with a typically ferocious set, and four of the most standout pieces for the show are immortalised here on record. Unsurprisingly, that timeless anthem of misspent youth, love, rebellion, and hope for change, 'Baba O'Riley', is a dominant factor, although epic finale 'Relay' is perhaps where the might of their rock 'n' roll juggernaut is most felt here.

Review: Ben White - not the same Ben White that plays as a defender for Arsenal - was just 25 when he was brought by Eddy Bongo Brown of the Funk Brothers to the Motor City to play with Marvin Gaye. It was five years after that when he lay down this single - his only one, although it is said there are some lost tapes featuring a full album on them out there somewhere. We hope it is found as this is excellent - 'I Would Have To Be A Fool' is a super smooth soul with nice funky rhythms and a hint of disco energy. 'Just Give Love A Try' is a more slow and lavish groove with choral backing and fancy piano.

Review: The deep archives of disco legend and synth wizard Patrick Cowley continue to prove inspirational for Dark Entries. Cowley, who passed away from AIDS-related illness in 1982, was the multi-faceted producer behind numerous disco anthems such as Sylvester's "You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)". Since 2009, Dark Entries has been working with Cowley's friends and family to shed light on the lesser known facets of this singular artist's output. This has resulted in a string of celebrated archival albums, including Catholic (featuring Jorge Socarras), School Daze, Muscle Up, Afternooners, Mechanical Fantasy Box, and Some Funkettes.For the latest addition to this saga, White Trash Boom-Boom, Dark Entries has teamed up with The Stud to release four tracks culled from some of Cowley's earliest rehearsal tapes. In 1972 Patrick was living in the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood with Theresa McGinley and Janice Sukaitis, friends of his from New York. In 1973, Theresa and Janice formed White Trash Boom-Boom, an all-female avant-garde performance troupe. Reacting to the Angels of Light and the Cockettes, they captured the spirit of the times: camp, confrontational, and delirious.

Review: Last year, Whirlpool Productions' most renowned moment, throbbing 1996 jam 'From Disco To Disco', reappeared on 12". Here the track, which was produced and released by the trio of Justus Kohncke, hans Nieswandt and Eric D Clark (who provided the song's distinctive vocals) in 1996, transfers to 7" single for the very first time. It remains a fine chunk of disco-not-disco, with warming electric piano motifs and Clark's idiosyncratic vocals rising above a deep, throbbing, Italo-inspired bassline and crunchy house drums. This 45 edition also boasts what appears to be a previously unreleased instrumental edit, which does a fantastic job of building and releasing energy while giving the sometimes-wild Rhodes licks a chance to shine. Review: If there's one seasonal single that's as timeless as it is unashamedly cheesy, then it's Last Christmas by Wham! Originally released in December 1984, radio stations quickly began to realise that the constant rotations of the track would cease as December would dissipate. The fact that the song came packaged as a double A-side with 'Everything She Wants' on the flip, meant a sleeper hit was hidden and waiting in the wings to take up almost equal spins as 1985 dawned upon would be listeners (the track even made it number one in the USA on the Billboard Hot 100). Repressed on translucent green vinyl, this 7" re-establishes both the classic Chrimbo anthem and the deceptively exceptional secondary A-side onto a singular slice of miniature PVC to bump out every festive season for that extra ho-fi experience (Holiday Fidelity).

Review: Buffalo rap icon WestsideGunn gets the reissue treatment courtesy of Hoffstein on this tidy 7", which brings the DJ Daringer-produced 'Rolack's' back in reach. On the A side we get the vocal and instrumental, which finds the man known as Alvin Worthy flowing in his distinctive, tightly-wound style over a warm and soulful beat from Daringer. The instrumental lets the beatsmith's cuts fly, and there's plenty of them. On the flip things get darker as 'Over Gold' strikes a noirish tone before 'Free Ike Free Kiki' slows down and freaks out in a haze of low-slung brilliance.

It's from Ohio's Wesley Bright who has joined forces with The Means of Production and New York's Ben Pirani, and is a lovely mid-tempo roller that reminds of balmy summer nights. The tune comes in two parts and opens with lovely Rhodes chords that are a great foundation for the tenor vocals of Wesley. Review: Mary Wells was one of the many jewels in the crown of Motown at the peak of its powers back in the 60s. 'My Guy' is one of her biggest-ever hits from 1964 and was written by Smokey Robinson of The Miracles. Review: It's been a while since we encountered The Wave Pictures, and it's safe to say they're every bit as welcome today as they were in 1998, when predecessor project Blind Summit was founded. There's always something incredibly charming but also truly funny about their work. Far from comedy rock, which has a restrictive shelf life after which it almost becomes unlistenable, nevertheless David Tattersall et al are guaranteed to make you crack a knowing smile.

Review: Miles Away Records are proud to introduce their latest single to land on the label: the cosmic soul gem 'Super Star' by Ruth Waters and the State Of Mind Show Band. Ruth 'Silky' Waters was best known for her two disco-infused albums Never Gonna Be The Same and Out In The Open, produced by the late, great John Davis. 'Super Star', however, was released on the tiny independent KMBA Recordings label in the late 1970s, and draws on the twin wells of modern soul and gospel, lending both a touch of cosmic goodness. Review: Tyrone Washington's 'Submission' is a timeless gem that gets pressed up to 7" here both in original form but also with the masterful Kenny Dope remix on the flip. The A-side is a hard edge jazz number with squealing reeds and tumbling drums, chord stabs and an insistent and rather dark energy. Kenny makes it into a much more smooth number with drums that nails you to the floor. The sax stabs are more muted and fade into the background as the menacing chords come to the fore. Two vital tunes for the collection for sure.

Review: Geno Washington & the Ram Jam Band were an U.K. based soul band, active between 1965 - 1968. Born William Francis Washington in Evanston, Indiana, Geno joined the airforce marching band and, after leaving high-school, was transferred to England - a week before his 18th birthday. His previously unreleased session recording featured here is 'If This Is Love (I'd Rather Be Lonely)' Also featured is 1965 Northern Soul number 'The Drifter', another unreleased Pye recording originally recorded in America in 1965. It was released in the U.K. the next year, where it was covered by English-Canadian Long John Baldry.
