Review: 18 months after a fantastic launch instalment courtesy of the mighty Danny Krivit, Mr Bongo's Edits series returns. This time round, it's Manchester legend and 'E Soul Cultura' specialist Luke Una at the controls. On the A-side he handles 'Love Games', an obscure slice of mid-80s South African disco by Thandi Zulu and The Young Five, cannily focusing on the warm, gently funky groove and the track's spacey synth solos. Over on the flip, the Electric Chair co-founder takes on Lionel Pillay's percussion, synth-and-organ classic 'Plum', stretching out the most dancefloor friendly sections before unleashing waves of solos and the original's saucer-eyed, sun-splashed instrumentation.

Review: The French deep house label D3 Elements is now a decade old and to mark the occasion it has assembled a superb three part EP series featuring plenty of talents both new and old. The second EP kick off with some Japanese stylings from Koizumi Yukiko and his piano laced bongo workout '526'. Taelue sets off on a deep and heavy bassline pulse that will make floors march and Nemanja Krstic's 'Aquae Sulis' brings some jazzy chord work and bubbling funk bass for a nice heartfelt vibe. Gnork shuts down with a skittish, stripped back broken beat that makes this another diverse offering.

Review: The Soul Of Tommy Youngblood 1970 Kent LP had many fine tracks, especially 'Tobacco Road North' though it was not attributed to the rightful writer, Jimmy Radcliffe, at the time. The music has been sampled for various hip-hop adaptations, including one by Ghostface Killah of the Wu-Tang Clan, but the original stands on its own and deserves a 7" format. The Other Brothers 'Nobody But Me' is another UK Kent exclusive that sold out on its first Kent Select press and is still much sought-after and now expensive.

Review: Correcciones Calypso returns from a generous hiatus with the fourth edition of its acclaimed edit series, replete with four re-edits that veer from the subtle to the downright brazen. Thomass Jackson and INigo Vontier invite the French duo Youkounkoun to open proceedings with an insane early 80s edit full of big drums and exotic touches that's been blowing dancefloors all around the world for the past years - and definitely resides in the brazen category, despite a lot of work having gone into it. Olta Karawame make their debut on the series with a powerful, compact edit full of ballsy keyboard riffing and a military-sized kick drum that is guaranteed to have heads banging . Review: The next tasty drop from the Fruits label, now well over 50 releases deep, is a pan-European affair featuring Bristol singer Joe Yorke and Swiss reggae band The 18th Parallel. The original on the A-side is a deliciously authentic and super sweet bit of rootsy lover's rock. 'End Of The Day' has lazy-as-you-like guitar riffs over loose drums with a falsetto from Yorke soaring high up in the sky on a warm summer's day. On the flip side comes the traditional dub version which is more empty and sparse to allow the reverb room to make its mark while the original vocal is also allowed plenty of space to bleed into.

Review: The Vivian Jackson label has locked in this crucial reissue of a roots classic from Yabby U, a late Jamaican artist and producer who released it originally back in 1977. 'Chant Down Babylon' is a warm one with lazy and rolling drums and natty acoustic guitar riffs with Jah worshiping vocals and Babylon yearnings that unfurl up top with a real smoothness. On the flip, you will find the 'Chant Dub Mix' which removes the vocal chantings and allows the hats to hiss and the snares to take off like UFOs while the fleshy low end is couched in oodles of reverb.

There is real religious rapture in the thrilling Doug Godbizniss mix of 'The Mighty Douglas' which gets the EP underway in fine style. Review: Ray Williams & The Majortones's 'Girl (You're So Sweet, You're So Fine)' on Epsilon Records has never previously been released, somehow. It is a wonderfully sweet modern and crossover soul sound that is actually a cover version of the popular Lil Major Williams original of the same name. The grace is a lush one driven by soul-train-era beats and big horns that burst out of the mix while the buttery smooth vocal gets you where it hurts. Flip it over for a more funky instrumental version.

Review: Six Minute Mile has rightly got plenty of attention for its first few outings and their early good work connotes with this eight 7". It's from Ohio's Wesley Bright who has joined forces with The Means of Production and New York's Ben Pirani, and is a lovely mid-tempo roller that reminds of balmy summer nights. The tune comes in two parts and opens with lovely Rhodes chords that are a great foundation for the tenor vocals of Wesley. Then come plenty of irresistible hooks and the rousing vocals sing of love and devotion like all good soul sounds should.

Review: Since the 1970s Danny Krivit has been a prolific re-editor. We're used to him cutting up classic cuts - think disco and soul, in particular - but he's never been afraid to turn his talents to contemporary cuts. That's what you get on this surprise Defected release. On the A-side he turns his attention to "Heaven", the killer gospel-inspired modern disco single from The Vision and Andreya Triana, turning in a version with plenty of drops, instrument solos and more emphasis on the righteous, life-affirming vocals. He's in a smoother mode on side B, extended and rearranging the rich and soulful dancefloor treat that is Kai Alce's Original NDATL vocal mix of The Dangerfeel Newbies' "What Am I Here For?" - a gem from 2016 that has previously been criminally overlooked.

It is a mix of artists who serve up the sounds with VIL's dancey 'Dothejazz' layering minimal synths and drums with potent bass rumbles. Yet here we get a second EP in quick succession with the sixth outing again offering up four vital names from the house and tech underground. Velvet Velour opens up with squelchy, funky bass on 'Show You The Door' before Liquid Earth melts the mind with impossibly bendy synths and stiff drums on 'Gummo Hardrive.' Review: It's a case of old school meets new school on this fresh new slice of house from Defected. Representing the vets is the one and only Louie Vega, while in the contemporary corner are New York's finest, the Martinez Brothers. Marc E Bassy also pops up on vocals for this feel good deep house gem. His part sung, part rapped delivery comes over soul drenched beats and nice singing leads, which have long been a hallmark of the great Masters at Work man, Vega. After so many bootlegged versions of these it is great to have a high-quality vinyl pressing on nice loud 7". Both of these legendary funk tunes come from the vast vaults of Atlantic Records and have never had their own standalone releases before. On 'Getting Uptown (To Get Down)' United 8 cook up infectious sounds and mix up horns, guitars, drums and bass while on the flip 'Sexy Coffee Pot' from 'Tony Alvon & The Belairs' is an explosion of raw funk energy.

Review: This reissue seven-inch offers up another double-header of hard to find heat from the expansive vaults of the legendary Kent label. First up on the A-side is Unique Blend's 1973 cut "Gonna Spread The News", a spiraling chunk of sing-along soul goodness full of heady group vocals, cut-glass strings, hazy horns and clipped guitar riffs. Review: Cititrax's first Tracks 12" sampler did a good job in showcasing material from some of the Brooklyn-based label's favourite contemporary producers. This follow-up, arriving only a few short months after the first, aims to do the same. Returning for his second appearance, Tsuzing kicks things off with the razor-sharp shuffle of "Nonlinear War", whose intoxicating electronics and wild synth lines recall Brown Album-era Orbital, before London-based L/F/D/M takes a trip into bleak techno territory with the acid-laden "Mouth Holes". Review: Original copies of T.Z Junior's bubblegum-boogie cut "Sugar My Love" are hard to come by outside of the artist's home country of South Africa. It's been that way since the single was first released on Roy B Records in 1985, hence this tidy reissue from the on-point Jamwax label. The title track remains a breezy, melodious, cheery and soul-flecked treat, with T.Z Junior delivering a brilliantly evocative lead vocal over bustling bubblegum synths, delay-laden machine drums and an inspired electrofunk bassline. "Are You Ready For Love", meanwhile, may not be quite as celebrated but is equally as impressive. It's the kind of sun-kissed "bubblegum" treat that would sound perfect blasting out of a soundsystem on a hot summer's day.

Review: We've very much enjoyed the return of trance to the underground and though purists will say the sound has never gone away, it sure has been some years since trance, for right or wrong, has been seen as cool. Now it is permeating all worlds from electro to techno to house and this EP does that as well as any we have heard recently. TYWI opens with the prog-tinged house banger that is 'Reality Checkpoint' complete with serene synth work and euphoric energies. Review: Sometimes spotted together as Omnibusraider, Tysk Raider and Omni Causa transcend in their isolated bubbles to create this remarkable six-tracker of solo gems. Review: Tyree is one of the early house artists from Chicago who played his part in shaping the hip-house sub genre, with its big beast, big vocal samples and plenty of attitude. Here his 'Acid Over' cut is served up on a new 12" from Chicago Vinyl with three different mixes. The first finds self-certified House Gangster DJ Sneak serving up a raw and rolling, loopy and frenzied remix that never quits. Review: Tyree might not get the headlines that many of his Chicago peers do but it's hard to see why. One reason might be that he was big on hip-house, a fusion of, well, hip-hop and house that never quite fully took off and got the respect it should. Here he offers something more raw and aligned with the first wave of Chicago jack. 'Video Crash' is a scintillating analogue fusion with pushing synths and caustic perc. It is what defines the first tune here on this new EP for Super Rhythm Trax: 'Protocol' is a wonky and undulating deep techno cut with a mix or prickly and smooth acid lines. 'Like A Dragon' then spins out into the cosmos with atmospheric pads and jumped percussion then 'Dacid' ups the ante with more jacked-up analogue drums and gritty, prickly 303 madness. Review: While quite a few of Type-303's releases have been heavily dependent on twisted acid lines and jacking drums, his latest missive looks to colourful Italian dream house and nostalgic 1990s deep house for inspiration. The results are predictably impressive, from the lilting synth-trumpet melodies, carnivalesque percussion, sturdy house beats and hands-aloft piano riffs of 'Is It Magic' (a kind of 21st century update of the classic Don Carlos sound), to the eyes-closed, sun-up gorgeousness of Mediterranean house classic-in-the-making 'Summer Nights'. Sandwiched in between you'll find the acid bass-propelled early morning hedonism of 'Garden of Love' and the breakbeat-driven dream house revivalism of 'Sexy Sax', where rubbery synth-bass and squally synthesised saxophone sounds catch the ear.

Review: Jasper Tygner is making moves, and fast, and is now one of the most interesting new names to have emerged in the underground. His Off Season EP is a case in point and is a multi-faceted work. 'Ready' is a standout and features Art School Girlfriend with its lush ambient synth craft and glitchy keys suspending you in a vibe while the vocals activate your heart. Later on this master of deep and downtempo sound worlds hooks up for a second time in 2023 with DJ Boring for the excellent 'So Unknown' which is another irresistible gem.

Review: Following on from a successful pair of pressings Belfast based house music imprint Computer Controlled has released its next dosage of acid electronics - 'Untimely Emotions' EP courtesy of Gavin Guthrie aka TX Connect. The whole EP has a retroactive mindset with its percussion, bassline and playfulness but all the while maintaining a progressive attitude - with its layering of varying sounds seamlessly over one another on "Breaking", or even "Crystal Clear's" digitalised bleeps transcending the tone to a more science fiction locality. As a whole the production has a very physical feel which is felt throughout each piece and in particular on "Durable Chin" that begins with a simple DIY kickdrum followed by a crescendo of skilfully manufactured snares and bass. The most driving track 'Not Here' has a engrossing spooky aesthetic making it for a very interesting track to be set apart from the rest of the EP.

Review: TWR72 is a Dutch techno mainstay who here debuts on the Spanish label Room. His Narrow EP is a powerful dance floor sucker punch with a remix from the up-and-coming Mathys Lenne that shows he is an artist with a textural take on tunneling techno. The original tunes include 'Narrow' which is all hulking great kicks and bleeping synth pulses. 'Generous' then ups the ante with quick and slick Mills style minimalism and 'Exact' rounds out with a hunched-over groove that leans into a stiff wind as howling synths swirl around and the tension continues to grow. Classy and timeless tackle for sure.

Review: TwoStep2 aka DJ Relay and Jo Public have been known for their superlative but distinctly old skool sounds, but lead track on this three cut 12" is rather a subtle departure. The beat is a little more wonderfully wonky than you might expect and the bassline bigger and more adventurous, with pleasingly original results. 'Starlight' plays off its abrasive backspins with fluttering harps that are more Luke Vibert than Sticky or Noodles, true genius, and a bubbling beat to boot. 'Weapon of Choice' plunders ravier elements but again, it's no museum piece with its off kilter piano and slowed down, drowsy atmospherics. If you're looking for memorable tunes that stick out rather than fit in, make this your destination.

Review: Three slices of unashamedly old skool (two) stepping action from the Above Sound label and TwoStep2 aka DJ Relay and Jo Public, that'll transport you back to the Sunday scene and UKG's earliest days. On this EP's lead track 'Give Me Some Of That' the duo perfectly catch that intersection between rave elements - the wispy, eerie synths and pitch shifted vocals - and the sophisticated shuffle of American garage. 'Drop The Bass (2022 Remaster)' leans slightly more towards the hardcore flavour, its choppier beats more evocative of the inspired syncopations of breakstep, while 'What's Gonna Happen' is the trippiest and most optimistic sounding of the three while still packing plenty of rhythmic punch.

Review: Back in the early days of the UKG scene it was all about those famous Sunday sessions. This EP from Twostep2 captures the magic of that special time across three hefty and bass-driven new cuts that stay firmly entrenched in the underground sound. 'I Can't Let It Go' is a raw and jostling cut with metallic hits and a classic pitched-up r&b vocal. Review: Mark Night's label is one of the UK's biggest when it comes to main room house sounds. This sampler shows exactly what it is all about as we head into the madness of the Miami Music Week and then Ibiza soon after. Twolate opens up with 'Baila' which has tribal drums and percusison that stomp with real heaviness under wild vocals. CASSIMM & Gene Farris combine then for the maximal monster that is 'Party People' with all its sweeping synth filters and James Haskell's' 'Check It Out' is a funky groove that ducks and dives under stuff chords. Last of all is Danny Rhys with the hooky andoopy joys of 'Sibali.'

Review: Second time around for Kon's fabulous re-rubs of Twilight's slept-on 1986 disco-boogie gem 'You're In Love', which first dropped on seven-inch almost a decade ago. Vinyl copies of the 45 are hard to come by, so this Ubiquity Records re-issue is most welcome. Kon's takes stick closely to the original - these are multi-track tweaks, rather than revolutionary remixes - while subtly beefing up the groove and highlighting the band's weighty synth bassline. On the A-side you'll find the full vocal take - all sweet vocals, crispy disco drums, colourful synths and clipped, Chic style guitar licks - while the flip-side 'Dub' is a marginally more minimalist, groove-focused affair, with delay-laden vocal snippets and swirling instrumental textures echoing across the sound space.

Review: The Castles In Space label has been quietly supporting esoteric synth works for the past seven or so years out of their home base in Biggleswade. Amongst the artists they've previously released are Antoni Maiovvi and CHXFX, and now they're presenting a new venture by the name of Twilight Sequence. So far, so synthy. The music on this single-sided one-track sureshot fits the vibe as well, dealing in expertly sculpted melodic patterns interwoven in a manner which sounds like it might well come from a modular set up, such is the undulating movement inherent in the sound and the symbiotic nature of the different elements.

Review: Fresh Sounds #000 is a new and unique series, limited and numbered to 150 examples thanks to the efforts of its parent company Ribo Cochlee. For the very first edition of the series, a mockley crew of newcomers come to the fore, be they DJ Moar, Disco Flegrei or Holdtight. Centring on woozy jazzdance and disco with an airily produced bent, the highlights on this one have to be Flegrei's 'Titamesque', which basks in a kind of sexy sophistry procured by the heady combination of live drums and a (we think) muted bass clarinet, and Yured Jones' 'Far Away', which breaks from the genre prescription for a more cinematic breakdown.

Review: This project, which translates to "The Way of Music" in English, is a collaborative initiative spearheaded by Groh, founder of the esteemed Polish hip-hop label JuNouMi which was established in 2002. It marks a fusion of talents between Polish and Japanese artists and commenced with Twardowski crafting music using samples from Japanese albums followed by the inclusion of MCs KANETSUGU and Prykson Fisk. DJs 1an from Tokyo and DJ Eprom from Warsaw joined the ensemble while the design, handled by Magorzata "Mauko" Korczak, explores Japanese Shod? calligraphy. This 7" release marks the start of a new Polish-Japanese collaborative series with more to come.

Review: Josh Dahlberg is The Valley and the Mountain aka TVTM and is an artist who has made a big move recently from the deep westside of Detroit all the way across to the far reaches of the Pacific Northwest. He he arrives on Central Scientific for its inaugural release with Detroit-based producer and Akka & BeepBeep founder, Jo Rad Silver, taking care of the flip. Next to an array of hardware, there is plenty of improvisation with guitars in this EP - 'Experiment Obscura' is a widescreen and dramatic ambient cut with a meditative feel and 'Immersion Theatre III' is another empty but inviting piece with curlicues, wispy pads, distant guitar echoes and moodiness to spare.

Review: TVAM first crept onto the radar in 2018 with a self-released debut which split the difference between Suicide and Boards of Canada, but since then his sound has broadened to incorporate a shred of pop nous and anthemic grandeur best captured on new single 'Costasol'. If that track has a deceptively gentle, dreamy demeanour, there's plenty more space for murkiness and claustrophobia elsewhere on the EP, as the one-man-band indulges his industrial and lounge tendencies in strange, compelling new mutant forms. 'Ephemerol' in particular stands out as the perfect misfit foil to the lead track's poised bombast, fuelling the dualistic intrigue of an artist who never misses.

Review: Like Chromeo before them, Tuxedo are one of those new wave boogie outfits who know exactly how to capture the infectious funk of the early to mid 80s and write their own sweet soul tracks with those distinctive chops. After a successful run on Stones Throw they established their own Funk On Sight label to carry their wares, and that's exactly where they land after a brief hiatus with the buttery smooth 'Don' My Best'. It's everything you want a boogie track to be, with a wiggly worm of a Moog b-line running underneath the crisp beats, sharp claps, cool keys and slick vocals. If you're into boogie, you can't help but jam to this one.

Review: Matti Turunen works as Morphology with Michael Diekmann most famously but also turns out super solo sounds, just not very often. Cultivated Electronics LTD, the vinyl off shoot of the main label, enlists the Finnish electronic maestro for just that here. This is an EP of irresistible electro-funk with cosmic intent. His lush melodies drift in well-made arrangements over clipped beats with plenty of melancholic tones in between. Some are more gritty like 'Xhante' while 'Radau' is an elastic rhythm with depth in the chords. 'Memnonia' cuts loose on a floating vibe with meticulously sequenced melody patterns falling like cosmic rain.

Review: A sleek, stripped down groove slowly takes shape as radioactive effects fizzle away and philosophers discuss the probability of the existence of God... That'll be the inaugural release on Audiomutz - a label founded to use electronic music as a vehicle for telling stories - then, from the hitherto unknown Turturu. Herck turns in a remix, that adds its own twist courtesy of deftly employed live drum edits, while 'Ratting Club Stories' completes the package with whispered vocals and a neat meshing of a chugging electro b-line and jazzy percussion. Review: A reissue of a 1988 house classic by DJ and producer Hipolito Torrales and company; 'You're Gonna Miss Me' is an incipient deep house classic, often described as one of its pangaeic moments, being an effective early production masterclass as well as a precursive blueprint for garage house. This fresh 12" version ' is a weightily produced stonker, with Cinthie's version channelling an extra low-middy grit, and Terry Farley and Wade Teo's version elbowing their way to string-laden euphoria with equal voracity. The original appears too, in all its raw, reissued charm.
