Review: If you're looking for a great selection of house and disco club cuts, you can't beat Z Records "Attack The Dancefloor" Series. The latest volume begins with the revivalist disco brilliance of label founder Dave Lee AKA Joey Negro's remix of Delia Renee's "You're Gonna Want Me Back", before moving on to the slightly more house-centric modern disco vibes of Dr Packer's superb revision of vintage Dave Lee production (as Foreal People) "Shake". Over on side B, Grant Nelson offers up a filter-sporting disco-house revision of Z Factor classic "Gotta Keep Pushin", before Lee dons the Joey Negro alias one more time to wrap ear-catching church organ solos around a gospel-influenced house groove on an excellent remix of Four80East and CeCe Peniston's "Are You Ready?".

  5. Phil Gerus - "Prelude To Love" (4:37)
Review: The XXX crew are on a mission to celebrate the adventurous and utterly well-informed dance music scene of Amsterdam, and they move to the fourth release on their label with a strong cast of characters that all have something different to say. Alterleo opens up the 12" with the low-throbbing psyche out of "Train To..." before Al Gobi takes over with the aqueous hardware house bubbles of "Rule Of Three". On the B side, Jack Pattern & John Parsley work together to lay down a fierce blend of industrial and disco that will send shivers down your spine. Roger Van Lunteren meanwhile revels in the squelchiest kind of esoteric acid with a new age mystique thrown in for good measure, and then Phil Gerus provides a soothing soliloquy to finish this distinctive record off.

  1. It's Alright (8:15)
  2. It's Alrigh (Otwo Reconstruction mix) (7:25)
Review:
Italian deep house producer Reekee returns to his own Wrong Notes label with another trip through beautifully rendered, highly musical soulful house. It's little wonder he has been snapped up by labels like Uzuri in the past. "It's Alright" is a track with huge crossover appeal, tapping into the kind of expressive keys that should sit right with soul heads as much as house devotees. The vocals add to the soaring melodic content, making this a life-affirming jam perfect for creating unforgettable, unifying dancefloor moments. Otwo gets busy with the track on the B-side, turning out a daring remix that spaces the core ingredients out with more than a little guidance from the Theo Parrish school of deep-rooted experimentation.

  4. Another Day (Patrice Scott mix) (6:43)
Review: Italian producer Reekee is back on his Wrong Notes label with another assured take on the soulful house template, which leads in with the bugged-out funk of "Another Day." Erik Rico's vocals sound on-point for this track, pushing Reekee's production into the stratosphere. "Tell Me Something" keeps the vibe resolutely deep, while "Feel Good" shuffles through a heads down club workout of the highest caliber. You'd be forgiven for thinking this record was landing on a label like Kai Alce's NDATL. Patrice Scott lends his masterful touch to "Another Day", edging the track into a different plain of emotional expression without losing the focus of Rico's vocal.

  3. Tortellini Jazz (original mix feat Paolo Campani)
Review: Fully tapped into the true US tradition of soulful house music, Riccardo Masi has been delivering the goods for the past couple of years to labels like Uzuri and his own Wrong Notes Records. On this new single the good vibes just keep on flowing, kicking off with Erik Rico's on-point vocal draped over "Reaching". Rico also forms the centre point of "No One Else", another masterclass in pattering drums and honey-coated keys. "Tortellini Jazz" shores up on the B-side, drafting in Paolo Campani to lay down some sultry sax tones over the mellow chords and playful Rhodes trills.

  2. Love Is (feat Billy Love - Bluesy vocal mix)
  3. Wurli Things (feat Jacopo Moschetto - original mix)
Review: Having previously appeared on Roots Underground, Reekee kicks off Wrong Notes with yet more grooves that tap into the spirit of truly passionate soulful house. The aptly named Billy Love's vocals aim straight for the heart on "Love Is", with the original mix being especially moving with its lingering jazz chords, string licks and stuttering beat. The "Bluesy" mix has a more traditional deep house feel to it, while "Wurli Things" heads off into expressive Rhodes territory thanks to limber keys work from Jacopo Moschetto. For classically informed house music from the heart, look no further.

Review: Renowned Hamburg digger Romanski excavates three sparkling eastern gems and gives them a precision polish for his brand new edit series on his own Wonder Music series. "Zund Ab Ghee" is a sassy, slinky slice of Bollywood disco while "Lambaya Kofte" takes us even deeper into the dance as an obese acid line weaves its way in and out of the tightly plucked out line. "Pling" continues the string theme but over gentle Nordic cosmic chug that allows the perfect space for the glistening piano momentum to shine. Wonder-full (not sorry)

Review: Classy Italian label Where We Met unveil a new signing on their seventh release, which also marks the mysterious ReKaB's debut. His skills belie that newbie status, because this is atmospheric techno with emotional and musical depth. "2019" is a real highlight with its twitchy synths and breezy electro grooves making for a pensive vibe before things cut loose on warm and rubbery house jam "The Hassle". The ambient synths that colour these tracks is what make them standout, and closer "Self-Destruct" is a prime example of that. "Music Makes It Better" is a title we can all relate to, and in the case of this track, it sure is a beautiful place to be.

  1. Abu Ali (13:12)
  2. Prelude (Theme From Mais El Rim) (12:49)
Review: Wewantsounds' 2019 Record Store Day release takes us back to 1978 and a hard-to-find 12" single from Lebanese composer, pianist, playwright and political commentator Ziad Rahbani. "Abu Ali" is perhaps not Rahbani's best known work - in the Arab world his various albums are far more celebrated - but it is one that has chimed with Western audiences thanks to its assimilation of elements of American disco, soul and funk. The title track is something of a beast: a 10-minute epic that wraps Arabic orchestration, mazy horn refrains and prominent piano motifs around an atmospheric disco groove and intergalactic synthesizer lines. It's bonkers but brilliant, making this reissue more than welcome. On the flipside there's a chance to enjoy "Prelude (Theme from Mais El Rim)", an epic example of Rahbani's 1970s soundtrack work.

Drum And Bass
  1. Persecution (12:35)
  2. Ostrich (9:34)
Review: According to Western Lore founder Alex Eveson (arguably better known for his revivalist jungle jams as Dead Man's Chest), Response and Pliskin's forthcoming debut album, "We're All Disturbed", is full to the brim with "anarchic warehouse rave music for the 21st century". We'd certainly agree that the two tracks showcased on this taster 12" fit into that category. A-side "Persecution" is an absolute beast - a 12-minute breakbeat hardcore/techno mash-up complete with throbbing electronic motifs, star burst breakdowns, heavy sub-bass and a rush-inducing beat free outro. Ten-minute slammer "Ostrich" is even wilder, with the duo wrapping mind-mangling acid style electronics and wide-eyed trance riffs around a boshing drum track.

  1. Mahogany - "Ride On The Rhythm" (Michael Gray remix) (7:05)
  2. Raw Silk - "Just In Time" (Michael Gray remix) (6:25)
Review: Full Intention man Michael Gray is the latest contemporary house producer to get his hands on the parts to classic cuts from the bulging West End Records catalogue. He has opted to rework two slightly deeper early '80s jams, starting with Mahogany's 1982 boogie cut "Ride On The Rhythm". His version is warm, sparkling and bass-heavy, offering the right balance between modern production techniques and the kind of effects utilized by the track's original producers. It's really good, keeping the spirit of the original track while dragging it into the 21st century. The same could be said of his boogie-house take on Raw Silk's "Just In Time", which boasts a similar balance of tidy new drums, spruced-up synths and swirling effects.

Review: The latest contemporary mix-master to get his hands on the West End catalogue is Dr Packer, an Aussie re-editor-turned-producer whose recent outings on Glitterbox have made him an in-demand artist. He kicks things off by delivering a "multi-track" mix of Raw Silk boogie classic "Do It To The Music" that offers a superb mix of beefed-up synth-bass, echoing vocal snippets, stripped-down breakdowns and New York proto-house style production trickery. Over on side B he tightens up and funks up Barbara Mason's similarly synth-heavy electrofunk classic "Another Man" - a song about a woman losing her man to, you guessed it, another fella - before subtly tooling up and extending Shirley Lites' peerless "Heat You Up (Melt You Down)".

Review: ***B-STOCK: Box damaged, product unused & in perfect condition***

- Creasing to corner of sleeve

West End's double-pack re-edit series continues, with long-standing UK electrofunk hero and scalpel rework specialist Greg Wilson sharing a quartet of revisions. There are airings for two of Wilson's most sought-after scalpel works from the "Credit To The Edit" series - superb versions of Brenda Taylor's "You Can't Have Your Cake and Eat It Too" and Raw Silk's "Do It To The Music" - as well as a couple of previously heard rearrangements that are on-point as per usual. Wilson first adds even more mind-altering delays and low-slung dub disco flavour to Forrrce's "Keep On Dubbin'", before superbly stretching out the mostly instrumental "Melt Down Mix" of Shirley Lites' synth-laden peak-time classic "Heat You Up".

Review: We at Juno HQ originally coined what is now known as the 'grey area', a sub-genre which has flourished in recent years in the post-Autonomic idiom of drum and bass, popularised by groundbreaking underground Berlin imprints such as Samurai Horo, Hidden Hawaii and of course the mysterious Weevil Neighbourhood. Repetition/Distract is Felix Hoeck aka Felix K, who originally released Salles Des Perdus ?in 2012 and it now gets a much needed repress. When you consider more recent releases on the label by the likes of SPR (with his black metal/dark ambient crossover) as well as Steven Porter's Katsunori Sawa who delivered last year's brutal Secret Of Silence LP, you can really trace back the original vision of the label through this EP with its sombre, textured noise experiments reminiscent of early Cold Meat Industries.

Review: On this second 12" celebrating the label's tenth birthday, We Play House boss Red D has assembled a stellar line-up of sought-after and unreleased cuts. The EP begins with a second airing for FCL's Adonis-influenced, retro-futurist gem "More Than Seven" (first released back in 2010), before the previously unheard DJ Longsleeve bathes us in the soapy, relaxing waters of blissful deep house shuffler "Ode Aan De Filosofie". On the fifth volume here, label co-head San Soda contributes a couple of smashing tunes, such as the shimmering FM tones on "Retractor" (nailing a lush new-age aesthetic) while the deep/life-affirming soul jam "Juno Love" is not so much an ode to his favorite record store (in our dreams!), more the signature sound of that awesome bassline throughout. Elsewhere, Japan's Humandrone throws down a raw jackin' and acid soaked stormer in the form of "Tonight" and the legendary Reggie Dokes' "Dream Catcher" gets an FCL (San Soda & co-head Red D) edit from back in 2009.
