Review: The Fourier label is back with more minimal dance floor magic, and the second release is a collaborative affair packed with talent. It's Aztec, Dark Male, Rob Bellfield and The Vast Profound who all come through here and start off with 'Sweet Music', a nice balmy and dubby cut for zoned out listening .'Unlimited Apex' pairs pensive basslines with smeared and expansive pads, then 'Standard Model' has a more warped and mind-melting cosmic take on warm, deep rolling tech. Review: _asstnt & Roll Dann are back on the label they were last on two years ago with a new collaborative EP in the form of Emergency Break. This six tracker is packed with punishing sounds from the off with 'Old Gem' layering up fizzing synths and slamming drums. 'Emergency Area' has a Mills-style drum funk and molten deep space melody to it while 'Green Rhythms' is a dark, gritty and minimal loop-fest to melt the mind. The flipside is just as varied with the likes of the deep and tunneling 'Mono Groove' and the menacing low ends of 'Handsaw.'

Review: Nug-Net is a late run by Gene On Earth, the Limousine Dream label head. He started it as an outlet for music made by students who took his online produciton masterclass Nuggets: The Blueprint. This is a sixth such collection of works submitted by students shortly after finishing the course and is another fresh and forward thinking mix of cosmic tech house from new names who are sure to now go on and establish themselves in the underground. 'Or So She Said' is a low slung and sleazy groove, Henry Hodson brings scintillating space-tech, there are grinding loops from REda DaRE and jazzy party vibes from Kerouac. Superb.

Review: A six-track UK garage smorgasbord comes courtesy of Supervision, making it very clearly known that their artists are masters at replicating the time-honoured practice, at least in garage, of 'not overthinking it'. From the off - BOn's 'Coal-Mining' - we're struck by the charmingly loose rhythmic quality of this EP, which rails against the glossy pomp of 'nu-garage'. Familiar names such as MJOG crop up with dark breaks-inflected fillers, while further highlights include the bassliney 'Here Come The Pretzels' by Glockta and the glitchy, sultry, stop-starty wobbler 'Tell Me'.

Review: Raton has grown to be a quite an integral part of Drumcode as well as the underground at large and now after previously working on the likes of Ellum Audio he finds himself in the studio with techno bigwig, Adam Beyer. The pair cook up two versions of the same cut here. 'The Signal' (Night mix) is a dramatic cut with an epic baseline and space-age synth craft over chunky drums that are constantly on the rise. 'The Signal' (Day mix) is a much more melodic and light cut but has just as much low-end heft. The boss has been busy putting together a trio of new EPs for the first half of 2023 that showcases a wealth of Mid-West talent. Review: We'll never tire of the incredible Brazil45 series on Mr Bongo, which has provided an authoritative window into the rich history of 60s and 70s grooves from South America. Here's a missing joint from the series which took some time to come to fruition - a split release featuring Brazilian Boys on the A side and Rubinho E Mauro Assumpcao on the B. 'Super Herois' is an obscure slice of off-kilter, psych tinged funk from 1975 that has the kind of individual sound which could find favour with a lot of different DJs. 'Tudo Ai' has a more recognisable samba shuffle, but much like the A side there's a subtle twist in the sound which leans towards blues rock and jazz, locking down on the rhythm and creating a low-key party starter in its own unique way.

Featuring mostly British and American artists the label now widens its net to serve up a pair of high impact tunes from their well-received Ciao Bella! Italian Girl Singers Of The 1960s compilation CD. Brunetta's 'Baluba Shake' has big and cavernous drums, plucked guitar riffs and rollicking great chords next to lung-busting vocals. It's a real dancer. Things get more impassioned on the high speed funk chase that is Rita Pavone's 'Il Geghege.'

Review: The Deeptrax series has so far turned out many delightfully head techno sounds for those who like to have their brains as busy as their heels when in the club. This one Deep Series 1.3, kicks off with Caim's impossibly smooth and cool electro-tinged trip 'Straight No Chaser' with its mellifluous pads and deft drums. Mathijs Smit offers a more physical but still warm sound with 'Abducted' and then Joey Anderson shows his class with a grimy and dubby roller, 'All Around Us.' Rich P/Lee's 'Clown Inc' (vocal mix) brings a little playful funk and Pim's 'Somethings On My Mind' is another breezy and cathartic cut.

Review: Monstrously glassy, yet heavy hard techno cuttage from the French RAW crew, who welcome four stunning audio fragments from various artists in their orbit. It's the seventh release in the Gemstones series, which is in turn inspired by different types of precious stones. Opener 'Neo Tokyo Vision' is an exciting and cutting tittilator, with massive rave stabs and a nigh-perfect balance of weight and highs, evoking the feeling of freely trawling the city at night with reckless abandon. Things grow grungier from thereon, with the likes of 'Black Mesa' and 'Burned Out' hearing the EP grow increasingly soily, subterranean.

Review: Stand by for the much anticipated follow up to the unreleased Ronn Colbert 7" on this label earlier in the year. "Just One Kiss Away" is an ultra rare soul stepper from 1981. It finds Ronn and Selah Colbert go up against one another, and both serve up super sultry, seductive vocals that tease and please. Add in steamy chords and soaring strings and you have one helluva smoocher. "Tell Me What I Wanna Hear" is another romantic to and fro between the pair, with a little more tension and build in the rhythm edition that adds an extra element of spice. Both are sure to become re-found classics.

Review: This unique 7" features two different artists - Raye Cole and Rachel Maxann - doing their own renditions of the same song, in this instance, 'Find Myself Another Man'. These versions bring a modern twist to a rhythm and blues banger that will transport you back to the good old days, Raye's version adding a bit more of a hop to it while Rachel's version has a garage band and surf rock tinge to it. Review: A case of things turning full circle if ever there was one, as Rolo McGinty of The Woodentops fame - the indie stars who discovered raving and then featured on the very first Balearic Beats collection - teams up with Coyote for a one sided 12" for Is It Balearic. Well, if this isn't, then nothing is! The title should be a clue to its sentiments, paying homage to the laughing herb that is 'Marijuana' and in particular, partaking in its delights in the shade on a hot day. McGinty delivers a deep, resonant vocal and some very cool acoustic strumming, while the Coyote boys do the slow motion beat shuffling. Anthemic glory.

Review: The sublime and subliminal Semantica sound out of Spain is one of our favourites when it comes to deep techno. Now the label is fast approaching its 150th EP but still keeps on turning up the quality, this time with Domenico Crisci and Retina It at the controls. 'Diorama' is a raw, chattery and urgent techno opener and the pent-up energy of it carries over in to the hurried 90s hustle of 'Transponder Code'. On the flip is the bleeding and mind-melting workout that is 'Preserving Machines' and 'Homeostasis' shuts down this most high-impact and high-energy outing with paranoid synths roaming over slick drum machine rhythms.

Review: A decade has now passed since Crossroads released their debut. The Italian duo has not released all that much in between, which is a shame since 'If You're In Need' - a cover of a disco-era soul staple made famous by Lenny Williams' soaring 1979 version - is genuinely terrific. Their take on the classic song is arguably best enjoyed in its 'Extended Mix' form, which blends authentic, 1970s style disco instrumentation (including sultry strings and the prominent piano stabs from Williams' version) with subtly beefed-up grooves, jazzy horn solos and subtle nu-disco flourishes. The remix is package is great, with a sublime, beat-free, full vocal version (the 'Acoustic' mix) being joined by a sublime, synth-sporting Young Pulse remix (another winner from the Parisian re-edit hero) and the groovy, effects-laden 'Call Me Dub'.

Review: The fourth of a series of reissues from Network 23 - which focuses on classic tracks by and adjacent to R-ZAC (Crystal Distortion and 69db) of Spiral Tribe, and which made up the bulk of the OG rave collective's live sets - the 'NET23 04' EP is a mesmerising sauna of tekno entrainments and mental sonic mares. Starting with a subtle mind-melter from Crystal Distortion, 'ESV', we move into increasingly propagandistic vibes from R-Zac - whose 'LSP23' sounds like a numbers station stuck on loop and set to a technoization - and then followed by 69db and Meltdown Mickey's 'Drivin', which returns things to their initial minimal but maddening state.

Review: Denzel Curry and GRAMMY nominated contemporary jazz great Robert Glasper performed a special live show in the Leimert Park neighbourhood of Los Angeles back in autumn of 2020. This special 7" picture disc features live audio of that set as part of this year's Record Store Day celebrations. 'So Incredible Pkg' is has swirling synth lines drifting up into the air , with wooden percussion and gentle beats accompanying Curry's confrontational vocal work. He is just as amped up while performing over the more laid back and deep cut 'This Changes Everything.'

Review: Bang on trend grooves from the Vivid camp, exploring the current fascination for all things that intersect both the garage and breaks genres. Lead track 'Wicked & Wild' is the one that leans furthest into UKG territory, its bumpy bassline and MC-style vocal giving it heaps of energy and attitude. Flip side instrumentals 'Push Past It' and 'Ronin' meanwhile, evoke the early 2000s spirit of breaksteppers such as Horsepower Productions, the latter especially maintaining the bassline pressure and adding it to the more hardcore vibe of rawer, sampled percussion. Review: There's very little collaborative work by Chez Damier and Ron Trent, especially the cuts they made during the days of Prescription Records, that isn't timeless and top-drawer. You could certainly say that about the four tracks that make up 1994's now reissued Hip To Be Disillusioned Volume 1. The untitled opener is loopy, deep and hypnotic in their trademark early morning style, while the track that follows - a version of Primitive Arts LP cut 'Sometimes I Feel Like' - is a little warmer and more positive in tone but no less chunky and locked-in. The flipside opens with a rolling, early morning loop jam (think deep, chunky bass, delay-laden synth stabs and crunchy drums), while the closing cut is a wickedly stripped back version of previous single 'I Feel The Rhythm'.

Review: Defekt's Cultivated Electronics presents For The Floor, a new series of split 12"s on its vinyl-only sister label CE LTD. Boldly, this is electro that refuses to stay as 'clean' as the Spotify algorithm or YouTube compression process would like it to be. Everything is distorted: 'Control Your Mind', for example, more or less sounds as though it's been run through an analogue master bus that's been half-corroded by nuclear fallout, with meditations on brainwashing and mind control repeating throughout. It's almost as if clipping and/or distortion is a metaphor for the mediated mind-frazzling that keeps us in check, that keeps us consuming.

Review: Pampa offshoot Hart & Tief launched earlier in the year, via a split 12" featuring tracks by Soulphiction and Mike Denhert. This time round, fellow German producers DJ Koze and Robag Wruhme are at the controls. Koze kicks things off with "Driven", a clanking, booty-shaking fusion of metallic percussion hits, resonating electronics, dub techno motifs, and minimalist textures. It feels a little like a contemporary Berlin take on early '90s Sheffield "clonk" (think Sweet Exorcist's Clonk's Coming album on Warp), which is no bad thing in our book. Wruhme's "X-mop 198" is a much more straightforward, early morning techno bubbler, albeit with similarly clanking percussion hits amongst the thumping kick drums and restless, one-note riffs.

Review: You can always rely on Dublin's Lunar Disko Records to provide the heat; this time it's in the form of some heavyweight electro vibes by the industry's best and brightest. But this is no surprise given the imprint's invariable doses of quality. First up is Dutch maestro DJ Overdose with "Arecibo", a comparatively more pensive and introspective electro appearance than his usual work, but TR One's "Escape From Enceladus" takes this pensive sway of synths and crystal-like sonics to an even deeper level. Raiders Of The Lost Arp kick off the flip side with the smooth and suave flow of "Equinox", this one belonging more to the house end of the spectrum, whereas Automatic Tasty comes through with a quirky little digi number with the aptly odd name of "I Can't Find My Own Manual (How Therefore Am I To Restore My Factory Settings?)". A tidy little blast of synth-filled goods.

Review: DJ Trace's DSCI4 dropped the eight-track Spy Technologies X Sampler compilation last year, gathering together label classics, giving them a remaster and a digital release for the first time ever. Now this 12" cherry picks the strongest cuts and gets them back out there into the physical realm, focusing on Trace's own work and collaborations with his co-conspirators. The Concord Dawn remix of 'Mutationz' is a hyphy kick-off to the A-side before the dark n' deadly 'Move' link up with Ryme Tyme. Review: Milan-based minimal label Micro Orbit has been busy kicking off a range of various artist series' in recent times, with the first Pioneer and Voyager EPs now followed up by Vol 1 of the Origins Series. As ever it's a chance to get a spectrum of the label's musical interests under your belt, with Dragomir setting the tone perfectly with the crisp, tool-like hypnotism of 'Revision'. RQZ has a fuller sound underpinned by warm bass and peppered with sound design, but the script is still resoundingly stripped back on 'Panavision'. Romanian stalwart Vid occupies the first track on the B-side with the slinky groover 'Oceans' before Selidos closes proceedings in style with the shuffling, tripped-out 'Malina Fields'.

Let the rhythm spin you on a journey of excitement and discovery. On the first side, Ruper Eliis nails that classic '90s NYC swing on the groovy "3Dimension" followed by Martin Bellomo (Momentz) with the deep and introspective cut "Earltraxx". Review: Eric B & Rakim remain two of hip hop's most love characters. Their wordplay and beat making was second to none back inter prime and has barely been bettered since. For that reason reissue slick this will always be in hot demand. This one focuses on the pair's 'Eric B For President,' a golden era great from 1986 that now comes on 7" after being an elusive find for hip hop heads for many years. Review: There is never a lack of attitude when it comes to Fukuinn releases. This third one comes on a nice translucent blue vinyl 12" and finds a smorgasbord of producers serving up one tune each. Fazack kicked off with a sharp 'Look Left' that has powerful drum machines rhythms and neck-snapping percussion with talk box vox. Relaxant's 'Swamp Break' then layer up more jittery rhythms and coruscated synths and bass before Bohm layers up Chicago hosue drums with visceral acid lines and silvery drums on the expressive 'Acis Era Kicks.' Foreign Sequence's 'Finfemxtrd' closes in a hurry, with techno drums and twanging synths that will blow up the club.

Review: In its full digital form, Z Records' excellent Life's Better With Disco Comp is an epic 37 tracks deep. Naturally there aren't that many cuts on this sampler 12", but the four on show are undoubtedly amongst the set's many highlights. Boss man Dave Lee kicks things off via a superb classic disco-meets-nu-disco revision of Firefly's 'Love Is Gunna Be On Your Side', before there's a chance to cop an obscure Backroom Productions rework of their early proto-house/garage-house gem (as Ruffneck), 'The Power - The Rhythm'. The mid-'80s fun continues on Larry Levan's vintage remix of Jonny Dynell's 'Rhythm of Love' - a killer fusion of dubbed-out synths and drums and Konk style Latin percussion - while Doug Willis' 'Doug's Disco Theme' is a classic disco-house number from Lee under one of his many alternative aliases.

Review: Vinyl Junkie catapults a brand new label into the universe and his intention is loud and clear - Badass authentic jungle craftsmanship for the ages. He's rolling neck deep with kindred soldiers; Radiokillaz and Fleck get wild on the breaks on 'Lakes On Saturn', Riffz dusts off the detuned rave stabs for that aggy hardcore flavour while VJ himself whips up some delightful breakbeat switchery that melts into a dubwise breakdown for momentary respite. Radiokillaz close down the EP with a touch of soul on 'Time Again', a poignant space jazz joint laced with mournful strings and a yearning vocal. Meltdown.

Review: Fleet Foxes & Resistance Revival Chorus performed 'Can I Believe You' on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert before this two-track release made its way to us. If that sounds like a pretty cheap way to record a single fear not, the pre-recorded footage juxtaposed the band's frontman, Robin Pecknold, singing alone with the clips of him and full band, joined by the Chorus, in St. Ann and the Holy Trinity Church, Brooklyn, New York. And it's the latter segments that have made their way onto this release.
As you can imagine, then, there's a very full sound at play here, with the title number growing into a grand piece of rolling, anthem folk indie. By comparison, 'Wading In Waist-High Water' brings the focus onto the Chorus rather than the group and removes the traditional chart structure, leaving us with a beautiful choir piece that's the strongest of the pair here.

Review: Last year's superb Pura Lempuyang album has been pulled apart and served up on a couple of separate 12"s and this is the second one. It comes on limited turquoise vinyl and offers four cuts of stylish deep dub and techno. Fletcher's 'It's A Virtue' goes first with taught, twanging bass and grubby basslines then Mike Schommer's 'Kingmaker' offers liquid dub funk with watery pads and hissing static. Nicolas Barnes picks it up a little with a darker but still warm dub techno roller in 'Sonic Dial' and Redrop's 'Genesis' is the more driving of the lot but again exists right on the ocean floor.

Review: A taster for Robert Hood's second Floorplan album, this EP puts a spotlight on the radical nature of his musical transformation. On "Music", the visceral rhythms of techno minimalism are gone; in their place is a rolling, tracky groove that boasts a repetitive vocal loop and which has shades of classic Relief /Derrick Carter. "Tell You No Lie" is even more impressive. It sees Hood use a gospel vocal over a stomping, funk guitar-sampling disco house workout. There is an audibly religious dimension to "Tell You No Lie," but Hood's knack for writing a great tune means that it sounds celebratory rather than self-indulgent or preachy.

Review: While Floorplan's line-up now also contains his daughter, Lyric Hood, for years the project was a solo alias of Detroit techno maestro Robert Hood. This two-tracker dates from that period, with both cuts originally appearing on M-Plant sub-label Duet way back in 2002. Two decades on, both still sound fresh and are excellent examples of Hood's full-bodied but minimalistic approach to Motor City techno. 'Shop' sees him layer looped organ notes, freestyle, high-register synth solos and angular electronics over a driving, locked-in techno beat, while 'Learn' is deeper and more hypnotic with plenty of energy-building TR-909 drum machine fills, psychedelic acid tweaks and faintly foreboding electronic riffs.

Review: Big name pile up alert! In the final stages of his career, the late Frankie Knuckles and fellow Chicago producer Ricky Sinz teamed up for this funky house outing that has classic written all over it . From the moment it's R&B-slanted vocal starts to wind you around it's little finger and the pumping, stripped down 80's groove kicks into life. Orlando Voorn delves even further back for inspiration on his remix, shimmering in disco strings, before Ben Sims carves out two harder-edged mixes that nestle neatly on the house/divide, both playing a single bass note off against restless rhythms.

Review: Feel-good minimal from Rico Friebe and Rico Puestel on faux-gold-foiled 12" vinyl, who lend their signature style a surprise French touch. Echoing timeless Thomas Bangalter, 'How You Feel (For Me)' is a detuned synth sweeping swathe of chord and offbeat hat, all centring on a hypnotic repetitious acknowledgement of how the listener feels. The B-side features said acapella, in all its standalone emotive glory. Sometimes it's hard to tell whether we're being told how to feel or whether we're being asked, but with a banger such as this one, we're not inclined to care about the difference!

Review: Tsuba's ten year anniversary - that's right, it has been that long already - has been marked with hit after hit from a wide selection of artists from across the house kingdom. In fact, for this 2nd instalment of the festivities, we have White Material frontman Galcher Lustwerk remixed by the inimitable Jimpster, with the latter putting a more starry-eyed mechanic onto the original; For Romeau complete the A-side with a vintage-sounding remix of "Pinball" by Williams. On the flip, Roy Comanchero drops the Chicago bass over a minimal sort of percussion groove on "Hypba". Kevin Griffiths adds a little acid to the jingly 707 beat of "Satori", and completes a stellar EP from the magnetic Tsuba.

Review: Hell Yeah is a label that is right at the heart of the Balearic sound worldwide. It is studiously run by Italian Marco, who is also a deep-digging DJ himself, a part of the Balearic Gabba Soundsystem and also co-founder of much loved Berlin club night Buena Onda. The night's second compilation is coming soon but before that is this taster which gives you a great cross-section of the sounds to expect: leftfield disco, mature grooves, deep and slow acid workouts and plenty in between. Japanese master Calm really stands out here with his take on Gallo's 'Abysso.'

Review: Soul Supreme is a master keyboardist best known for his covers of classic hip-hop songs by the likes of Mos Def, MF Doom and A Tribe Called Quest. Here side-steps his covers duties to handle remix productions for two of his contemporaries in the Netherlands neo-soul scene - Gallowstreet, LYMA, Shamis and Rebiere. The A side lends a wonky future house feel (a-la GoldLink, Crackazat) to '52 North', Gallowstreet's ode to the city of Amsterdam. The B tune strips it back to a lo-fi soul bapper, fleshing out its theme of loneliness in parenting.

Review: The quality d&b landing on Okbron just doesn't let up, as the prolific label turns its attention to Gen & Ryde, a new collaborative project between Mark Wilson and Ryan Miles. Mark Wilson is mostly associated with early Fokuz Recordings output from around 20 years ago, while Miles was dropping heat on Good Looking sister label Looking Good around the same time. Review: Little is known about Gent1e Soul besides the fact they have been on Fast Castle before (with the exemplary 'Silk Armour' EP), they make remarkably addictive, super-gloopy, trippy, funky beat based music and that they're probably quite nice and considerate, considering their alias and all. Generous, too. Each of these five cuts tickles a different corner of the breakbeat/dubstep/club hinterland as they guide us from the old school Benga-like pushes and swagger of 'Siege Ram' to the WNCL-flavoured percussive hypnosis of 'Woads' via the pounding technoid rolls of 'Fortified Walls' and beyond.

Review: There's a nicely meditational vibe to Camilo Gil's 'Skydream', gliding along with a hint of breakbeat sidewinding to its beat and some deep jungle (as opposed to junglist) atmospherics. The Jef K & St Jhons remix turns it on its head, making it sturdier and adding swagger, not to mention a dash of 80s synth flourish here and there. Rodrigo Valdivia's 'Acid Rain' has a similarly global feeling to it, extra dimensional ambient house with proper tribal rhythm foundations remixed into even spacier territory by Peter F Spiess.

Review: Originally known for mixing up cosmic disco and indie techno, Lily & Kazan's production career has taken a turn towards classic house pastures. Their latest project, Gingerblack, is rooted in their love of house sounds of the 80s and 90s. What better way to announce it to the world, then, than by joining forces with the voice of house, Robert Owens. The honey-voiced former Larry Heard collaborator is naturally in fine form on 'Feeling That Way', a re-invention of piano-powered 90s house (complete with bubbly synth bassline, spacey chords and loose-limbed drums) with a 21st century twist. Jakob Seidensticker & MELINA provide the obligatory remix, re-imagining the track as a deep, rolling breakbeat house number with added bass pressure and sweat-soaked drum machine handclaps.
