Techno
No (6:58)
Frontex Frappant (6:31)
Review: Over a career stretching back almost two decades, Robag Wruhme has proved to be one of minimal house and techno's most unique producers, with a trademark sound that's become a byword for mind-altering, late-night quality. Fans of the Wruhme sound will love his latest outing on Kompakt extra. Our pick of the pair is driving A-side 'No', where mystical sounds, exotic percussion and sustained chords rise above a thrusting bassline and a rock-solid drum machine rhythm. By his standards it's quite "big", though that's not a criticism - 'No' genuinely sounds like a proper peak-time banger. B-side 'Frontex Freppant' is more in-keeping with his hazy, hypnotic sound of old, with stabbing electronics, looped aural textures and wonky electronics clustered around another tough, weighty techno groove.

Good Life (4:34)
Let's Groove (4:15)
Review: Through his solo releases and work with Leon Ware, Richard Evans and Skip Scarborough, Rockie Robbins became one of American soul's most celebrated artists and producers in the early 1980s. This year's he's set to release his first album of note since 1985, with these two cuts offering a taste of what's to come. Interestingly, "Good Life" sounds a little like it could have been written and produced in the 1980s, even if the mixing, mastering and lilt in Robbins' voice reflect its contemporary status. Either way, it's warm, positive and comes blessed with a wonderfully strong chorus. "Let's Groove", meanwhile, is a little deeper and more loved-up, perfectly reflecting that side of Robbins' 1980s output.

Review: Robert Rental is an artist as influential as he is overlooked. An anchor of the early British DIY and post-punk scene, his name is most frequently uttered alongside illustrious collaborators such as Thomas Leer and Daniel Miller. Dark Entries and Optimo ally to illuminate some of Rental's early solo works with an expanded reissue of his debut 7" Paralysis /A.C.C.. Both labels have previously excavated Rental's catalog; we reissued the collaborative LP with Glenn Wallis in 2017, and Optimo released a collection of demos in 2018.

Love Mosaic (6:32)
Review: Roberta is a producer inspired by the late great Motor City don that is Mike Huckaby. That is clear to hear in this new EP for the small but well-formed Sole Aspect label across a quartet of sublime deep house gems. Opener 'Excursions' is as smoky as they come with gorgeous but muted chords that bring warmth and diffuse light to the cuddly-deep drums and delicate percussive sprinkles. 'Forever Love' has a jazzy flute bursting out the mix next to more prominent drums while 'Love Mosaic' is a delightfully smooth and sultry late-night charmer with gorgeous soulful vocals and steamy sax lines. A classy EP all round.

Take Our Time (vocal) (6:25)
Take Our Time (Piano edit) (5:56)
Review: An ultra-depthy broken house production from fellows Roberta and Fawziyya Heart, 'Take Our Time' is a seeming exercise in how many top frequencies one can lop off, yet still use in service a sense of excitement in stasis. The simple tessellation of soul-fed voice, subdued kick, murmurative Rhodes and mono sub make for a fantastic combo, as we're unconsciously fed lyrics and style signifying tarrying and patience, not to mention the Molokos and Smith & Mighties of the 1990s.

Review: Big week for Dutch imprint Gooiland Elektro who bring on the maximum possible bleakness; first with Radko and now with the foreboding hydra that is Roberto Auser and Melting Dogma. Auser aka Derk Reneman on side A contributes the typically Dutch greyscale electro snarl of 'Man With Dead Leg' followed by a mental slow techno cut 'Imperative'. On the flip, Melting Dogmas, a side project of 4cantons, continues to go at it full force with the hypnotic 303 tunnel vision of 'Wanting To Be With' followed by the body bashing IDM fury of 'Indistinguishable Indications'.

The Other World (5:05)
The River Must Flow (3:45)
Review: 80s soul jazz sensation and keyboardist Judy Roberts debut with her The Other World album and went on to out another nine full length. The first remained her best, though, and two tunes from it make up this hot new 7" on Dynamite. It's the title track that goes first and is an uplifting and life-affirming soul-jazz jam with busy drumming, hectic chord work and a fantastic lead guitar that brings the Balearic vibes. Things slow down on the flip with the more sentimental and noodling jazz-funk bass and laidback grooves of 'The River Must Flow.'

1&O (7:55)
Review: Summer is but a distant memory in real terms, but in musical terms we can bring back the sunshine whenever we fancy. And that's what Marc Roberts does and then some here with four poolside classics. They follow on from Austin Ato's smasher for the label's first release in fine style with opener 'Jogging Back 2 U' full of bendy bass and heart-wrenching vocals. 'Foolio Paradiso' then layers up glossy chords and retro twins stabs with a sentimental r&b vocal that brings the love. The late night cool of 'Foolio Paradiso' has an exotic feel that will have you reaching for the cocktails and last of all '1&O' brings the funk.

Review: It's been a minute since we last heard from Ste Roberts on a solo single, but now the Hypercolour chap is back with a drop for Alien Communications. Mutant electro is the order of the day, as Roberts mines his considerable experience to edge distinctive qualities into classic machine funk. A subtle sprinkling of discord here, a grubbiness in the signal chain there, and you have yourself a rock solid record which edges past the pretenders to hold its own as a legit slice of contemporary electro you'll actually want to pop and lock to.

Review: UK DJ and producer Justin Robertson is back with his latest 12" record 'Deadstock 33s', the fourth release on the up-and-coming Pamela Records label. This record is filled with groovy little tracks that blend various genres into one. 'In Minus Shadows' has a nice psychedelic campfire funk to it, with the dub-like 'Cup Of Silence' and the electro sounds of 'Of Ghosts' completing the package. Eclectic and unique dance music - very cool tunes here.

Show Me Love (Stonebridge club mix) (7:40)
Luv 4 Luv (Stonebridge club mix) (6:06)
Review: Have there been any remixes that have been more impactful and influential than StoneBridge's famous re-rub of Robin-S's 'Show Me Love'? An enormous crossover hit when it was first released in 1990, the track's blend of bold organ hooks, bumpin' beats, dreamy chords and big vocals later helped inspired the birth of what was then known as 'bassline house' or 'northern garage'. As this reissue proves, it remains a timeless dance anthem that transcends genre. This time round, it comes backed by a lesser-celebrated StoneBridge rework of another Robin-S track, 'Luv For Luv'. This is a bit deeper and sweeter, but mostly utilises the same musical ingredients (gravelly stabs, Korg M-1 organ lines, lush pads and so on).

Review: "In this time of war and crime... in this time of frustration and tribulation... guide us!" A veritably desperate prayer against the vagaries of a newly established Babylon, Whodem's latest Christmas offering on wax hears stalwarts J. Robinson, Whodemsound and Bopper Ranking team up to scramble together every flammable resource possible, to produce something, anything, resembling a guiding light. In other words: desperate times call for radical, rootsier methods. The dub here is just as affecting as the A, basking in the pure freshness of verbed-out rims and lonesome metric-modded delays.

Cuss Cuss (version) (2:51)
Review: 'Cuss Cuss' comes all the way from 1960 and is the most celebrated and well known tune from the man born Lloyd Altamont Thomas Robinson. He was a dancehall don who died a decade ago but not before releasing some 50 odd singles and EPs. 'Cuss Cuss' is devastatingly short and deals - a dark vibe pervades the deeply burrowed bass and the vocals are the sound of him making a plea for bad vibes to leave his life. On the flip side here is a version that is more lo-fi, stripped back and deep - as if playing from the room next door, almost.

Review: Vocalist and poet Roger Robinson has connected with Jabu producer Amos for this new single which finds them explore new grounds. After their fuzzy lovers rock outing last time out, here they head off into space with more cosmic and zoned out sounds full of intimate and slo mo grooves. 'Summer' goes first and is a blissed out cut with ambient pads and lonely piano keys encouraging you to get lost in deep thought. Review: Those Northern Soul fanatics from Deptford are back at it with another crucial 7" formed from their life of dedicated digging. Instead of keeping their finds close to their chest they're reviving them and putting them out there for a new generation to savour. On this record we get the magic 1966 stomper 'My Dear Heart' by Shawn Robinson, a tune teasing between light and shade with deadly precision. Review: The latest Robohands saw a return to UK instrumentalist Andy Baxter's beloved formula of breakbeat, jazz and ambient from his breakout success with 'Green', which relied on much more jazzy leanings. Expect a wholly unique experience with Giallo however, which harnesses a much stranger energy within its ambient fortress. The sounds are tactile, yet somewhat distant at times, like being lost in dense blue fog on 'For the Different' or the soothing nu-jazz instrumental of 'Relax'. The undisputable highlight is the title track 'Giallo', a droning ambient synth with drum breaks and different synth patches gently swaying in and out of the mix as quickly as they arrived. It's a short and sweet care package from one of the greatest instrumentalists in the country.

Emile - "Jeu Froid" (6:14)
Review: The second Abstract Cuts release is an EP split four ways, but with new, unconventional approaches to the dancefloor at the heart of each submission and all using vintage drum machines and samplers. The Robot Dance Connection's 'Powers Of Ten' (R2d2 live edit) kicks off side one, shiny high frequency polish played off against a gorgeously stubborn techno beat, before the slinkier and smoother 'Gold Saucer' by Brunzi offers an equally danceable but less angular counterpoint. Flip it over and Tomska's 'Lethal Overdose' (Touch dub 2022) offers rushing sonics, off kilter snare damage and four to the floor thump, before Emile's 'Jeu Froid' completes the set in grimy basement style.

Robot84 Vs The RAFF - "Get It Right Next Time" (5:46)
Review: London producer Scott Ferguson is the man behind the Robot84 alias. He has a love for 80s gear that very much defines the sounds he makes, from proto-house to darker disco. His self-titled label is back with more of that good stuff here as he faces off with The Raff for 'Get It Right Next Time'. This one has a creeping groove and warm chord sequences that tease and please beneath sweeping Balearic synths and celebratory melodic sequences that build to a crescendo. The drums get the hips swinging and the sprinkling of cosmic magic finishes it off in style making it a perfect cut for open-air dancing by the beach.

This time he's cooked up a killer slice of proto house with an Afro vocal boost from TAMA. From the slick reverse edits to the warm thrum of the bassline, the classic drum machines patter to the spangled arps, this is feel good business rendered with reverence and love for the roots of dance music as we know it today. Review: In its original 1984 form, 'I Want It To Be Real' was Freeez founder John Rocca's debut single a soulful slice of cutting-edge vocal electro that rocked clubs from Brooklyn to Bradford. This welcome new edition boasts a fresh rework from edit-not-edit specialist Late Night Tough Guy, who utilises some of Rocca's original elements the killer bassline, synth solos and so on while adding dreamy deep house chords and a restless 4/4 beat. It's rather good, but even better is Farley 'Jackmaster' Funk's flip-side 'Hot Piano' mix, which originally appeared on Rocca's 1987 set Extra Extra. A breezy, life-affirming chunk of early Chicago house brilliance with added extended piano solos, it's arguably the definitive mix of 'I Want It To Be Real'.

Review: As Paolo Rocco sees in 10 years releasing music in the depths of the tech house scene, he's dropping this surefooted slice of peak time club gear on Up The Stuss. 'First Night Out' is an ear-snagging cut with crossover potential, and Malin Genie knows just how to tease out some Lately bass and swirling pads to make for a smoky, early morning roller embellished with a few tasteful bleeps. 'To The Stays & Beyond' sounds resplendent as an after hours jam in its 'Dub Mix' form, and then 'Chi Chi Boogie' closes the record out with a refined, mellow kind of swinger that should appeal to the minimal crowd.

Further proof of his dusty-fingered, scalpel-wielding genius can be found on this Orange Tree Edits outing. Check first the rubbery, off-kilter '80s electro-flex of "Kat-Woman Do", before admiring the Mascara-sporting, New Romantic style synth-pop goodness of "Bitter Juice". Hailing from Mount Vernon, New York they released two classic albums and a handful of singles to great success. A regular selection on the very influential MTV Yo-Raps show they quickly gained notoriety for Pete Rock's use of obscure soul and jazz records. Here we have the reissue of the 2017 release that brings their most popular track to the masses once again. A-side cut 'Condition' is a much-loved anthem these days thanks to Ken Rogers' original tune soundtracking the most psychedelic bowling sequence ever set to celluloid in The Big Lebowski, and this 'V Jagged Sky' version has some choice zippy effect to only enhance the trippiness. Still going strong almost 35 years after its inception, it's nice to see the label is still welcoming fresh talent: Roger delivers a sultry, sauna-dunked steam on 'Part Of My Soul', one of the most contented-sounding house tracks we've heard in a while, thanks in part to the vocal stylings of Rimarkable; then there's the more repetitious ardour of 'Radik'Hall', 'Cosmic Funk' and 'The Music', all of which revel in the purely seductive potentialities of deep house production. Review: Few vocal deep house records are quite as timeless as Cece Rogers' "Someday", a Marshall Jefferson produced anthem that has continued to be constantly played by discerning DJs ever since its original 1987 release. As most will tell you, it was also the major sample source for Liquid's rave anthem "Sweet Harmony". This South Street reissue replicates the track listing of that initial Atlantic release, albeit it in re-mastered form to sound a little meatier on modern club soundsystems. On the A-side you'll find the essential Club Mix, where Rogers' impeccable vocal and Jefferson's meandering piano solos naturally dominate. These piano solos take more prominence on the "Some Dub" version, which in true '87 style still includes key vocal passages drenched in dub delay, while the Accainstrumental is - ironically - a little more like a contemporary house Dub.

Review: ** REPRESS ALERT ** DeWayne Julius Rogers is an American singer and multi-instrumentalist. He is best known for "Say You Love Me" from his 1975 RCA album "It's Good to Be Alive". His classics "Love Brought Me Back" and "Love You Forever" are remastered and reissued here on South Street's new disco reissue arm. Influenced and honed in the church, "Love Brought Me Back" is a sure-fire '70s soul hit, with a spirituality to the delivery that few can match. B side "Love You Forever", an emotive, soulful and romantic number, is pretty good too.

Ruff Stuff - "The Gathering" (5:53)
Ruff Stuff - "Brighter Mood" (6:50)
Review: For the sixth transmission from Stolen Goods, two artists in Rogue D and Ruff Stuff step up to take charge of one side each. The former goes first with 'The Vibe' (feat Joe Le Groove) and it is a smoky, low-key and deep basement house cut with razor sharp hi-hats and dusty drums overlaid with a sensuous male vocal adding the soulful vibes. A Job remix is much more cosmic as it travels through starry night skies on shiny synth lines, then Ruff Stuff douses you in rippling synth melodies on 'The Gathering' and lays down clipped, funk-fuelled house on 'Brighter Mood'.

Review: The Rogue Filter label sure has a rogue profile. It claims to have been on the scene for over 30 years, but this is only the fourth release from the label. What's more, it has been three years since their last. Anyway, the fourth transmission is a banging one. 'Everything Can Become One' kicks off with blistered bass and squealing synths then 'Sinister Acts' is a bouncy analogue workout with reverberating bass to rattle walls. 'Sonic Countermeasures' gets more brutal, like intergalactic warfare, and closer 'Wife For Life' s a sleazy and ghetto fried cut for the bass lovers.

Review: On his previous Exo Recordings Intl outings, the impressively named Ludwig A.F. Rohrscheid has offered up a slew of psychedelic dancefloor workouts shot through with subtle - and, to be honest, not-so-subtle - references to various styles of 1990s electronic music. He's at it again here, too, romping his way through acid/trance/early progressive house fusion ("Reality"), clanking, sub-heavy UK techno (the spacey "Winx"), intergalactic ambient techno/IDM heaviness (EP highlight "Leaves"), and bombastic, out-of-this world, Rephlex style "braindance" (the mid-to-late '90s Aphex Twin goodness of "Between Worlds"). It's a good collection of tracks, with enough variety and inventiveness to avoid the pitfalls of hollow stylistic pastiche.

Review: Roi has released almost exclusively on the Fanzine Records label over the last four years and each time he drills down further into a celestial world of cinematic and atmospheric ambient music. The opener here, 'Cancer,' is one of his best - melancholic synths convey real loss as the drums ping about all over. 'Pena' has more resolve, a straighter back and tougher snares unsparing away beat the lullaby-like chords. There is plenty of drama in the more unsettled arrangement and course hits of 'Gracias' while 'Tigre' is a potent peak time workout with bleeping tones and a distorted lead line taking centre stage.

Review: Jack Roland invites us deep into his star-gazing world of "darkness and distorted cosmic visions" on this scintillating new EP for Lonely Planets. 'It Felt Like A Kiss' is one of those quietly intense tunes that trap you at the centre of the spiraling synths and douse you in warmth. There is an aloof feel to the breakbeats of 'Fresh' while 'The Eye Opening' brings subtle vocal sounds and smears them into the cosmic mix. '1994 Is Gone' rounds out with more deft designs and infinite deep techno horizons.

Review: Rolando Simmons is back with more of his elegant, subtly skewed electronica, following up albums for Love Love and 030303 to drop this beauty on Utter. Alex Egan's label always favours intriguing oddities, and so you know the brand of electro Simmons offers is not some cookie cutter concern. There's an emotive warble to the synthesis, but more than that it's inherently odd around the edges and fuelled by a sentimental core, closer to braindance than typical electro. Whether it's the wobbly and lilt of 'Org Vibris' or the microtonal slides of 'Duelling Parrots', Simmons keeps things odd and engaging at all times on this wonderful eight-tracker of freaky electronics.

Review: It won't have passed you by that the world's longest running (and most commercially successful) rock band is back. The big news, of course, is that the Rolling Stones have recorded their first album of new material in 18 years, Hackney Diamonds, which will appear in stores and online next month. To whet the appetite of fans old and young, they've served up 'Angry' - a one-track CD single that has been manufactured in relatively limited numbers. To be fair to the old timers, it's genuinely 'prime' Stones fair - all gnarly rhythm and blues riffs and sprawling solos (courtesy of Keith Richards, of course), yelp-along vocals from the effervescent Mick Jagger, and a suitably sturdy rhythm section. A return to form, as many critics have already pointed out.

Review: Milan based crew Rollover DJs tap into the spirit of Balearic here with the brilliant new EP 'Change My Mind' on their own label. They also hosts their own party in the city and this is exactly what you would here there - opener 'What Do You Live For?' has elongated groovers detailed with neat guitar riffs and some fine, bendy bass guitar while gentle cosmic synth twinkling up top and a hooky indie vocal unfurls in the middle. 'Change My Mind' picks up the pace and 'Never Found The Way' then brings it down to a more dubbed out space disco cruiser that might well be the EP highlight.

Review: Bristol party and label Just Jack welcome unsung Detroit hero in the form of Gari Romalis. He brings all the sounds you'd expect of a Motor City artist - depth, soul and warmth. 'Panic In Detroit' (Goos Life Mix) is a mid tempo jam that will warm up early evening floors. 'Final Fronteer' (Brain Block mix) is a deep and cuddly cut with hip swinging claps and splashy hi hats and last of all comes the best fo the lot, 'Hard Rain.' It has smooth drum loops that rock back and forth and draw you in beneath balmy cosmic pads and far-sighted sense of melancholy. This is tasteful, subtle dance music for the heads.

Review: Detroit legend Gari Romalis is as productive as ever, offering up a strain of deep house that feels classic without trading on past glories. In a year when he's collaborated with DJ Minx on Women On Wax, landed on Just Jack, Wild Circus and Secret Society, he's now rubbing shoulders with Boo Williams, Orlando Voorn, Vincent Floyd and more for breakthrough Italian label NICEPEOPLE. There's quality oozing out of every bar of this EP, but 'Black Diamondz (Africa Mix)' is especially classy, capturing a subdued but purposeful mood which rightly turns the mind to the empowered theme of the record. Don't sleep on 'Purpose Reprise (Motivate Mix)' either, in which the pointed speech samples give you food for thought atop another of Romalis' impeccable groove.

Review: With label staple Divinti making an appearance this week on Stump Valley's latest EP, we're very happy to see Women On Wax Recordings serving up a new release to follow up last year's Violet Groove EP by label owner DJ Minx. It's an entirely Detroit affair once again, where she teams up with local scene veteran Gari Romalis (aka DJ SCSI) for this split release - Tronic D. On the A-side, Romalis serves up some serious attitude on the late night basement wall shaker 'Stomp Da Yard', followed by more sensual mood music on 'Goin' Down'. On the flip, Minx does deeper with the hypnotic chords of 'Stiletto Stroll' and the jazzed-up minimal house groove of 'Cocktail Or Two' where she nails that perfect afterhours vibe once again. Tip!

Review: Lost City Archives was a vital label back in the 1990s and now founder and Motor City urban legend Gari Romalis has brought it back from the dead. He has been crafting fine house and techno for 30 years but lots to the future here with some new school stars. 'Dendo Mojo' is first up as Joey and Ron Head Back combine for deep and dusty drums, molten synth lines and plenty of traditional US house goodness. The Gari Romalis Special mix is more heavy and laced with subtle acid, then 'Belle Gruv' slips into a gorgeously skipping groove with leggy bass and brushed metal snares. 'Dance Worthy' closes out with another deep, cuddly, aloof groove of timeless appeal.

Review: Rome's Andy Romano is welcomed into the Bordello family with his long-awaited debut release, 'Monday'. The tracks it consists of were shelved for more than ten years, said to have floated between a handful of DJs after its first confidant, Andrea Confrancesco, chose a different path in his creative career by becoming a professional illustrator. An excellent example of naive, nigh-lo-fi new beat, but no less punchy and galactic, 'Monday', 'Loredane' and 'Cyber Black Spaceship' are a veritable trident of watery, retrofuturistic, catchy wonderment.

Review: The already well-travelled 'I Am a Dancer' cut that was originally produced by Marc Romboy and C.A.R. and debuted on Kompakt's acclaimed Total 21 album now undergoes some vibrant transformations with three new mixes. Marc Romboy & Sinisa Tamamovic goes first and make it into a steamy, weighty but deep and pulsing track that drips with sweat and lust. The Skatman remix is much more for the big room with its grinding low ends and epic breakdowns and Dense & Pika then bring some unstoppable and rolling waves of techno power to their version. Cheers.

Review: Marc Romboy and Stephan Bodzin make for one of the most celebrated duos in techno. Here their 'Atlas' tune gets a remix from Ukrainian duo Artbat & Shall Orin on Systematic. They're artists at the heart of the modern melodic techno movement. Their remix here is a one-sided 12" that is designed for the main room. The percussive energy and sweeping synths build and build over the driving, rubbery beats. Its serene, well-designed, and a surefire standout cut that will get hands in the air on plenty of the world's biggest stages.

Review: Names don't get much more titanic when it comes to techno than old school German dons Timo Maas and Marc Romboy. They join their considerable skills for a new single here which is the first of a few to come. 'Die Zeit' does everything you would expect a track from this pair to do - it has the powerful linear drums, the rumbling bass lines and the epic synth craft that lights up a vast sky above. It's a tense rollercoaster with a grand ambition and lasting impact. A Synthapella is also included on the flip for even more of that melodic intensity.

This time they offer up 'Der Rhythmus' on limited edition splattered vinyl and it is another timeless, terrific and peak time cut. Review: We're not sure what the first six are but the 7th Power of Dance is a strong one, if this EP from Chachi Romero is anything to go by on the Japanese-US label Dailysession. It kicks off with the majestic original - a future Body & Soul classic, surely, with its funky guitar riffs, gloriously spiritual chords and jazzy keys all topped off with a properly steamy vocal. After that comes a series of versions starting with a Pablo Cruz Midnight Drive mix that is more smooth and traditional in its deep house approach. Monchan 90's Saturday Night In Village mix is all about the funky riffs and soft focus bells that glow bright and then his Monchan Luv A dub mix brings jumped percussion and extra layers of drums.
