  4. Pohl - "Space In The Distance" (5:59)
Review: Ovine build on the momentum of their first EP with another new house offering that is beautifully deep. It features two tracks each from Dan Piu and Pohl, and they all hack back to dreamy Italo, classic Mr Fingers and the more pensive Chicago greats. "Depresismatica" is a real highlight with its meandering basslines and infinite cosmic horizons. "Mello Phone" offers more pixelated melodies and busy beats and "Space In The Distance" has the sort of freaky edges and dusty analog textures house lovers always fall for. Already, then, this is a label that is setting a high standard.

  1. Pan Sonic - "Lahetys/Transmission" (4:52)
Review: Beyond Space & Time is a new project from the team behind the fabled Rainbow Disco Club festival in Japan. The concept is to give a chosen selector free rein to share gems from their record bags, which then get pressed up for lucky followers to get their mitts on. They've wisely chosen to kick things off with the mighty DJ Nobu, who strikes a strong first blow on this upfront promo, single-sided 7" cut with the monolithic "Lahetys/Transmission" by Pan Sonic, which originally appeared as a CD-only track in 2007. It's a monster of a track, showing the Finnish maestros at their electric best.

  5. Acid Track (Najel Monteiro remix) (6:23)
Review: Almost thirty years after it was first released and spawned an entire new sub genre, "Acid Tracks" still bangs harder than 99% of new tunes. Here it gets remixed by a selection of seriously big names as well as hot newcomers and then pressed up to limited green vinyl. The big man Carl Cox goes first and is in no mood to muck about, layering in hammering kick drums and making the 303 even more wild and serrated. Swiss-Chilean minimalist Luciano distils it down to a more soft and supple acid track that works on the mind, while the flip side offerings serve up stomping warehouse techno, strobe-lit anthems and rubbery drum workouts.

Review: Long-time sonic sparring partners and kindred fusion spirits Paradox and Nucleus return to their Esoteric imprint for more glacial goodness. "Beatbox" is a perfect example of the two OGs' sonic palette. Unhurried, spacious and colder than an overnight party-for-one in a morgue. "Plexus", meanwhile, takes us even deeper down their rabbit hole. Stripped back to a well-chiselled two step, rolling break, cosmic pads that constantly mutate and a velvet sub bass that really pops when you drop this on a big rig, it's perfect hypnotic fodder for the 4am crew.

  1. Pharoah Sanders - "You've Got To Have Freedom" (Opolopo Tweak) (7:11)
  2. Roy Ayers - "We Live In Brooklyn Baby" (Opolopo Tweak) (6:06)
Review: The latest missive on GAMM is something of a biggie. It features two superb reworks of classic cuts by Pharoah Sanders and Roy Ayers courtesy of Opolopo, a house producer whose cuts always have plenty of synth-fired funk and lashings of soul. He brilliantly transforms Sanders' "You've Got To Have Freedom" into a rubbery, Latin-tinged house number, underpinning the original jazz cut - complete with righteous vocals and killer trumpet solos - with an ace new bassline and beefed-up beats. He takes a different approach on his revision of Roy Ayers' "We Live In Brooklyn Baby", re-casting it as a rolling and chunky house number full of suspenseful string parts, twinkling pianos and Ayers' titular vocal.

  1. Urban Score (8:32)
  2. Montage (7:45)
Review: Moscow-based Okbron Records has been doing a terrific job in serving up long lost and previously unreleased cuts from the formative years of jungle and drum and bass. Their latest white label 12" offers up two tracks from long-serving quartet Pariah, which were recorded during the late 1990s around the time when they were weighing up a "major deal" with LTJ Bukem's "Good Looking Records". Bukem used to rinse the dubplate of "Urban Score", a wonderfully warm, spacey, bass-heavy and dreamy chunk of intergalactic drum and bass underpinned by the classic Amen break. Flipside "Montage" is, if anything, even more intergalactic in tone, with an extended ambient intro making way for bustling electronic beats and wavy, supernova synths.

Review: Is this pop? Is this experimental? These are the thoughts that will have crossed many minds when encountering the kind of baffle Jai Paul offers. A guy who seems intent on creating curveball works of art, "BTSTU" in many ways is minimalist stuff, save for the concepts behind the sounds. Or at least its structures give the illusion of minimalism. From the first waterfall of synth to the way in which vocals are allowed to (quite literally) speak for themselves - a multitude of characters with one voice - it's at once bound for the charts and your bookshelf of classic works.

  4. Recollection (4:06)
Review: Valencia's Pepe has built up quite a discography over the last few years, with this fine outing on Church following similarly impressive releases for Let's Play House, Lobster Theremin, Loose Fit and Sprung. The EP's impressive title track is available in two variations: the sparkling, breakbeat powered "Roll Mix" - think hip-house style drums, weighty dub bass and occasional dreamy chords - and a "Bleep Mix" that beefs up the sub-bass while adding some suitably sparse, computer game style electronic melodies. Another clear highlight is "You Must Not Be Me", a fine combination of rush-inducing, sunrise-ready electronics and bustling breaks, while closing cut "Recollection" is a rather lovely drift into opaque ambient territory.

  7. LSD UnitCorn (Camille's Deal) (8:15)
Review: Not many people remember Lee Scratch Perry's foray into electronic music on the 1997 CD-only release "Technomajikal". It's a distinct diversion for the dub master from his more roots-minded experimentation, but still loaded with the same irreverent mischief and sonic acrobatics you'd expect from the Black Ark pioneer. Adeen have picked up on the quality elements hidden away in the album and given them a fresh airing, with some choice remixes to boot. Camille delivers a plentiful spread of versions, from the hypnotic incantations of her take on "Maxi Merlin" to the Latin heat of her version of "LSD UnitCorn". DJ Boring gets a little more technical on his remix of "Technologically", chopping up the samples and strapping them to a thumping house beat. It's as wild and mixed an end result as is fitting for a maverick like Lee Scratch Perry, the man promising to ride on his "unitcorn".

Review: Hugely prolific pioneer Persian Prince returns with yet another haul (and indeed pull) of unreleased DATs from the foundation era. His breakthrough "Persian Inna Jungle" track takes the lead with a dubplate remix never-before-released. It's back by pure gully fire as "Drum & Bass Soldier" takes us straight back to 95 and Kool FM absolutely running things. Deeper into the mix "Interlude" takes us on the scenic route with some very spacey treatments on the breaks while "Truth" plain shaves our head off with serious amen pressure. Finally, "Desertism" drops us in the middle of the Sahara with only a drum kit to keep us alive. Mystical business.

Review: Since kickstarting the Existence Is Resistance label back in 2011, Persian has been on a mission to offer up sleazy, forthright and downright inspired UK bass music. He's at it again on "Revolution", joining forces with various like-minded fellow producers to lay down more scintillating and searing sounds. He first joins forces with DJ Staf for a bombastic revivalist jungle affair (the ace "Revolution"), before inviting Nick Dunton to help wrap wild electronics and gentle melodies around a more off-kilter D&B rhythm on "Milton 21". Elsewhere, Lauryn adds evocative vocals to the dreamy breakbeat flex of "Not Nuff Time", while solo salvo "D Dub Retwist" sounds like a more sub-heavy take on the mid-90s Ninja Tune trip-hop sound.

Review: Alex Pervukhin has enjoyed a productive 2019. This rock solid four-tracker on Colours Of Crocus marks the Ukrainian producer's fourth single of the year, following similarly impressive outings on Recordeep, Hubble Recordings and his own Laconica imprint. It's an attractive and warming affair, with Pervukhin effortlessly fusing elements of late '90s UK tech-house and the dreamy, spacey end of the deep house spectrum. Opener "Late Run", whose melodic flourishes, tactile synth bass and intergalactic electronics are wonderfully immersive, is the benchmark, with Kirik's flipside remix offering a tougher and more hypnotic take on the same seductive elements. Elsewhere, "909's Dreams" is more driving but no less atmospheric and melodious, while "Next Week" is a fine chunk of drowsy late night hypnotism.
