Review: In the four years since his debut album as King Krule, south Londoner Archy Marshall has been busy as solo artist, collaborator, rapper and producer. He now returns with 'The OOZ', an expansive record that's densely packed with disparate musical influence, dark and personal storytelling, and Marshall's distinctive sneering charisma, all framed in his usual backdrop of seedy urban vaudeville. It's an incredibly layered album that offers the listener a guided tour through this disturbing and decayed landscape of atmospheric smoky jazz, grunge and ambient. Even at nineteen tracks with a runtime of just over an hour, The OOZ is something of an epic that never feels overdrawn, by dint of its richly illustrative, engulfing and transportive nature.

Review: It's hard to believe Archy Marshall, the 'real' name behind King Krule, is only 28. Not only does his back catalogue smack of wisdom and experience, a goldmine of resonant and reflective twisted punk jazz, dark wave, pop and trip hop, it often feels as though he's always been here, inviting us to share in disillusionment, anger, melancholy and honest reflections on being human. Since arriving into the musical conscious as a very young looking teenager, initially using the pseudonym Zoo Kid, there has always been this startling juxtaposition between fresh faced adolescent we see and the wizened master of observation we hear. Things have waned in terms of intensity, with Space Heavy a fine example - fragile and vulnerable in so many moments - yet the overwhelming power has actually increased.

Review: When Superpitcher unveiled the King So So project on Hippie Dance in 2015 (initially anonymously), only a handful of the 10 'version excursions' were released on wax, with the rest only appearing digitally. Mule Musiq has decided to set the record straight, presenting the full suite of tracks on vinyl for the very first time. It's a pleasingly freewheeling and eccentric affair, with highlights including the dub disco-goes-cosmic quirkiness of 'Disco In The Sky', the ultra dubbed-out, Idjuts Boys-esque 'Girls In The Sky', spaced-out ambient interpretation 'Tripping In The Sky' and the deep, hypnotic techno flex of 'One More In The Sky' being our picks. Review: West Coast hip-hop artist King T's Thy Kingdom Come album was his fifth studio recording and it was made around the same time as some of the genre's most iconic ever albums - namely Dr. Dre's 2001 and Eminem's The Slim Shady LP, both of which were multi-platinum record breakers. As such it has plenty of the sonic hallmarks of the era with guest spots from the likes of Dr. Dre, NWA's MC Ren, DJ Quik, Too $hort, Ice-T and even NBA legend Shaquille O'Neal. King Tee is one of the rappers Dr Dre was to work with when he left Death Row Records to form Aftermath Entertainment in 1996. This album never got flawed at the time but finally sees the light of day now.

Dub From The Roots was actually the legendary dub technician's first ever exploration of the long-player format and it proved to be one of his best. It is crafted from 14 rhythms by Bunny Striker Lee and then transformed and translated on the mixing desk by Tubby who took it into futuristic and heady new sound worlds with endless chambers of echo.

He is the undisputed, unified and unbeaten heavyweight camp of that sound even now, decades after he first defined it. This particular record is a reissue from Greensleeves of King Tubby's impressive and utterly classic album from 1975. It's a follow-up of his Dub From The Roots LP with more Bunny 'Striker' Lee rhythms dubbed to the next level by the man like Tubs. Review: One person who surely never dubbed too much was the prolific and pioneering King Tubby, but that hasn't stopped Patate Records from putting together a third volume of his work with that sub-title. All of the 12 tracks on this release are classic, rare and/or unreleased and they were ll produced by the man himself in the late 70s during the gold age of the genre. Rodguel Sinclair aka Blackbeard is the producer of the material and his backing band The Ring Craft Posse, which included noted reggae heads like Sly & Robbie, Family Man and Carlton Barrett, all feature next to some of the era's finest vocalists - Delroy Wilson, Horace Andy and Johnny Clarke amongst them. Basically, this is as authentic and essential a collection of 70s reggae as you can get.

Review: Kyle Thomas is the name of the singer-songwriter who records and performs as King Tuff. During the pandemic lockdowns he had something of a realisation about who he was and what he wanted to be and then "set out to write a love letter to those cherished moments of inspiration and to the small town that formed him," namely Brattleboro, Vermont. This is that love letter and it is an album of musical magic with uplifting and spiritual joy found in every hook and verse. There are gorgeous orchestral tones, tender moments of violin and cello and plenty of thoughtful sax lines on a gem of a record.

Review: Where do you start with Carole King? From her reign as the most successful female songwriter in the UK album charts from 1962 to 2005, a staggering achievement for any foreigner, to the New York-born artist's claim of charting 118 Billboard Hot 100 tracks in the US at the time of writing, some of which were written during her tenure as a scribe at the Big Apple's Brill Building, often cited as the centre of the American pop industry during the latter half of the 20th Century.

It was first put out over a decade ago in 2012 and remains a cult favourite amongst fans who appreciate the realness and the rawness of the recordings as well as hearing the slightly different takes on a number of well known songs of hers. The pop rock queen includes the likes of 'Crying in the Rain' from early 1962 right up to several 1971 tunes from her hit album that year, Tapestry. A must have for fans old and new.
