  1. Nu E Injoseala (N-am Carti De Credit) (3:43)
  2. I Love You Viata Mea (Lema) (4:40)
Review: By now Future Nuggets have surely been established as one of Romania's leading exponents of leftfield electronic oddities, and they don't disappoint on the surprising delights of this new 7" from Renato Din Sala and Ion Din Dorobanai. There's an Eastern lilt to the vocals and melodies on both tracks, but they're framed by some wonderfully quirky synth parts and budget drum machines. "Nu E Injoseala (N-am Carti De Credit)" in particular capitalises on cranky monosynth squelch and organ wails, while "I Love You Viata Mea (Lema)" takes a more energetic approach and works some Rhodes-like sounds into the mix.

  1. Fred - "Love Can Last Forever" (4:06)
  2. Instrumental Band - "Love Can Last Forever" (4:04)
Review: All welcome Stylart: a brand new soul venture from Timmion. They're launching with Fred, a new artist who apparently has a complicated past. From the raw falsetto energy and emotion seeping from this slow burning jam he probably has. The authenticity is backed all the way by the equally vaguely titled Instrumental Band who provide the - you guessed it - instrumental on the flip. Beautiful.

Review: Ill Bill and Vinnie Paz reconvene as Heavy Metal Kings for a hard-hitting new EP featuring long-time collaborator Lord Goat (formerly Goretex). "The Wages Of Sin" pairs hard edged beats and low slung bass with Wu-Tang style shadowy soul to absorbing effect. "Dominant Frequency" utilises a quirkier sample paired with a slower, deeper cut beat that is full of menace and angst.

Cat: ATH 062. Rel: 15 Feb 18
  1. Reality (3:36)
  2. Hey Hey (3:19)
Review: Previously spotted passing hands for over 5000 quid, this one-off 45" from North Carolina troupe Ice has enjoyed cult status over the years in both the deepfunk and northern soul scenes. Straight from 1980, there's a great balance of classic soul motifs and modern production as "Reality" swoons and sways unhurriedly but emphatically while "Hey Hey" ups the boogie ante with firm focus on the party, sharp switches on the chorus and some insane bass runs. Another ice cold reissue from AOTN.

Hip Hop/R&B
  1. It Was A Good Day (4:25)
  2. You Can Do It (feat Mack 10 & Ms Toi) (4:24)
Review: The first missive from the reissue-focused Throwdown imprint takes a deep dive into the bulging back catalogue of West Coast hip-hop legend Ice Cube. Side A offers us another chance to own 1992 hit "It Was A Good Day" a languid, sun-kissed Golden Era jam crafted from elements of a familiar slab of laidback jazz-funk. Over on side B you'll find 1999's "You Can Do It", another once high-profile single featuring additional verses and vocal contributions from Mack 10 and Ms Toi. For those who've forgotten it, the track is a punchier and heavy club cut that utilizes all three rappers' distinctive flows to ratchet up the intensity throughout.

  2. Tinoge Ya Ta'a Ba (part 2) (2:45)
Review: Following their surprise reunion and Strut-release album We Be All Africans last year, Idris and The Pyramids return... This time on Max Weissenfeldt's Philophon imprint. Laying down a spiritual arrangement so frenetic and full of its own life it takes up two parts, Idris's sax plays duet with Philophon's own vocalist Guy One. Gutsy, raw and full of surprises, it's another out-of-body experience from the longstanding jazz troupe.

  2. Ohkey Dokey (part 2)
Review: The Incredible Bongo Band were a loose studio collective interpreting classics of the day in their own inimitable percussive fashion .They are of course most famous for their ultimate b-boy classic version of "Apache". This particular 7" however features two Incredible Bongo Band cuts that have not previously featured on any albums. "The Riot" is a frenetic drum workout and has been championed by the likes of the Chemical Brothers. "Ohkey Dokey (Part 2)" takes on a somewhat more subdued hue in comparison, but has some dope funky clavinet in the mix. Well worth checking.

  1. King David's Harp (3:18)
  2. King David's Dub (3:20)
Review: Sukh Gill's Indica Dubs crew has joined forces with four-piece band Vibronics to release a trilogy of seven-inch singles. This is the first and contains two versions of "King David's Harp". The A-side original mix is a bona-fide hot-stepping dancefloor gem, with flanged guitar motifs, pleasing pianos and electronic melodies jauntily dancing above tight, steppers-style drums and a bold bassline. The flipside "King David's Dub" does exactly what the title suggests, smothering the Vibronics' killer riddim in delay-laden piano snippets, echoing guitar sounds and percussion hits that seem to trail off into infinity (and beyond).

  1. Herbalist (4:10)
  2. Herbalist Special (4:08)
Review: The Inca Dubs crew continue to lead from the front, this time with the second of a three part series of dubwise gems. As ever, this is clean, fresh, digitally finished dub that looks to the future. There is real swagger in the drums, the leads are warrior styled and uplifting and the crashing hits add that bit of rawness, texture and energy that grabs your attention. The special version on the flipside is warped and twisted with oodles of echo and reverb for crowds who love the high life.

  1. Timbuktu (3:53)
  2. Timbuktu (Dubplate mix) (3:50)
Review: Indica Dubs bring their three part series to a close with another stellar edition. It is the in-house team and Vibronics who link up here for "Timbuktu". Vibronics first landed on the label three years ago and in that time have become key associates. This latest is actually the first time the label boss has produced directly with Vibronics and the results speak for themselves. The track is a heavyweight number with bold leads and flabby bass that makes you move. The dub plate mix is down and dirty as the lead is swiped, filtered and twisted into something much more menacing. It marks a fine finale to this series.

Deep Dubstep
  1. Militant Dub (3:05)
  2. Dub The Bass (3:07)
Review: Uprising Sounds returns to Indica with a powerful original and even heavier version. "Militant Dub" leads heavily on the main synth line that's almost oriental in its allure and mysticism. As the title suggests, the rhythm is persistent and just on the right side of rigid to maintain the essential funk. "Dub The Bass" is a much deeper exploration of the low end as the warping bass is allowed to turn itself inside out as the track progresses. Standard Indica procedure: only 500 have been pressed.

  1. Queen Of My Universe (3:15)
  2. Up (3:59)
Review: The first of two major Infinity licences from AOTN this month, this is a significant excavation even by renowned digger label founder Fryer's standards. Usually seen passing hands for well over 500 quid, this second and last single from the relatively unknown troupe Infinity is a stone cold jam that's been sought after for many many years. Absolute rare groove sleaze on the bass and horns, "Queen Of My Universe" sparkles with soul in every element. Meanwhile "Up" strips things back even further with an uptempo disco twang and tight Q&A vocal play between the band. Infinite love for this one!

Roots/Lovers Rock
  1. The Roach (feat Jaja Wray) (4:00)
  2. Rathid (feat Vin Gordon) (2:48)
Review: Room In The Sky know how to serve up top notch reggae instrumentals, and few do them better than The Inn House Crew. There's a slight sadness to the forlorn melodica playing that drifts over "The Roach" but the cheerier nature of the chords mean you aren't allowed to wallow for too long, and the jangled drums and riffs are always keen to move you along. Flipside "Rathid" is a more classic roots cut with dusty drums and woodblock hits that bring the warmth.

  1. Instant Funk - "I Got My Mind Made Up (You Can Get It Girl)" (T Groove remix) (4:43)
  2. First Choice - "Love Thang" (T Groove remix) (4:52)
Review: Here are two absolute gold standard Salsoul classics given a new spruce up thanks to the remix skills of T Power. Wisely, they've chosen to take a softly softly approach to such sacred material, but there's a little extra dancefloor oomph where it counts to make these tracks pop off that little more against more modern fare. First up is Instant Funk's evergreen classic "I Got My Mind Made Up (You Can Get It Girl)", and on the flip it's the impossibly perfect "Love Thang" by First Choice. Both have never sounded better - full credit to T Power for doing this one right.

Review: A seminal slab of tribal house in its truest form, massive at nights like Body & Soul and consistently drawn for ever since; Joe Claussell's rare remix of his own group Instant House's 92 cult cut "Awade" gets a limited treatment on the Jungle Sounds reissue series. Still just as humid, sexy and bewildering with its rattling percussion, powerful vocal textures and rolling bassline, all laced together with Joe's perennial spiritual signature, this still sounds incredible 27 years down the line. And it comes complete with the previously unreleased "Drum Box Demo" and a selection creative mix tools. An incredible 45, grab it while you can.

"Beautiful Philosophy" has a little northern soul stomp to it while still shimmering with 70s pop charm and some incredible harmonies while "Too Sweet To Be Lonely" takes The O'Jays' classic to emotional new highs with yet more fine tuned chorused vocals - too sweet to sleep on!
