Review: An emotive, fresh and cinematic new thrash-prog-metal album from For All We Know, and the third in an implied triptych including their first two, For All We Know and Take Me Home. By Design Or Disaster came about after the band's lead brain Rudd Jolie emerged from lockdown with a divine spark, one which is quite literally fleshed out through this album's theological themes. The Dutch guitarist and vocalist is heard crying out for a 'Lifeline' and guidance ('...In Getting Lost'), amidst complex mathy progressions and masterful performances. 'The Future That Came Too Soon' is by far the main highlight, never settling into a single riff or delighting in repetition, and instead indulging the sonic turbulence of a fraught relationship with a significant other, evoking tough times toughened out.

Three Drums
Review: It's been a hell of a long time since Kieran Hebden released a full-length album; Sixteen Oceans and Parallel both came out in 2020 and made for twin final inculcations of his twinkly, stellar dance sound. Three, by contrast, comes a full four years later and promises a return to a relaxed space for the artist, recalling the woodside studio space that facilitated his inauguration as a meme. Not quite abandoning the EDM bent, 'Daydream Repeat' recalls those earlier projects, but the likes of 'Three Drums' and 'Loved' are by contrast much more measured, soft-breaksy constructions in sound, recalling a more radical return to hip-hop than house.

Review: While Ben Frost's work has long been marked out by deft-touch dark ambient, experimental instincts and clandestine aural textures, he's always thrown in surprise excursions and drawn on musical inspirations that other like-minded producers would fear to embrace. This latter characteristic comes to the fore on Scope Neglect, his first solo set for six years. Remarkably, it utilises the moodiness, weight and ten-ton guitar licks of metal - played by Car Bombs guitarist Greg Kubacki and bass-slinger Liam Andrews of My Disco fame - as a starting point. Frost naturally puts these through the sonic wringer, combining them with his own skittish, IDM-influenced beats, dark ambient soundscapes and razor-sharp electronics. The results are unusual, impressive and emphatically enjoyable, sitting somewhere between timeless electronica, Nine Inch Nails and experimental metal.
