Purple Divine (100 gram vinyl 10")
Cat: MXW 04. Rel: 03 Mar 17
Deep House
  1. Purple Divine
  2. Ordinary People
Review: Ekkohaus is no stranger to the house scene!! You can hear his intelligent, funktifying rhythms and grooves on imprints like Morris Audio, 2020 Vision, Circus Company, Flumo, Eklo, Mule Electronique, Brut, Moon Harbour, Holic Trax, Claap, Gruuv, Hudd Traxx, Diaphan Music and now MixxRecords!! We welcome the Greek native with open arms...

This special 10" purple colored vinyl is most appropriate as for the entitled "A" side is called "Purple Divine" and divine it is!! Playful percussion and drum-work along with a simplistic, melodic bass groove keeps you in hypnosis just longing for more!

You'll find a more jacked-up and jazzed up pump on the "B" side with "Ordinary People". DEFINITELY a house banger!!

  3. Tarantism (8:08)
  4. Mabble (5:26)
Review: Freerotation resident Tom Ellis has decided to launch a label, In Modo Di ("in the style of", in classical music terms), packing this first release with four of his own productions. While opener "Josuka" is seeped in gentle positivity and hazy warmth - a by-product of a toasty bassline, dreamy keys and swirling atmospherics - for the most part the EP is an ultra-deep and emotion-rich affair. "Berlin In Winter" is particularly spellbinding, with melancholic melody lines wrapping themselves around soft-touch grooves and icy atmospherics, though IDM and ambient-inspired closer "Mabble" - think a slightly cheerier take on the Biosphere sound - is almost as awe-inspiring.

  3. If EYE Was From The D (vinyl edit)
  4. Crossing Dimensions (In The 5th edit)
  5. Jami Jam Dubb'd
Review: Veteran maverick Elbee Bad pops up in ever-unpredictable places, but somehow he sounds just right on Thema. His fearless, deeply rooted take on house music defies imitation, and so it goes across this full-fat EP. "Request Monster" is a lazy groove embellished with strings protesting the culture of requests in the club, while "A Lot Of Jazz As A Child" doffs its cap to Sun Ra in a subtle way that manages to be both mechanical and free-flowing. "If EYE Was From The D" is a more overtly electronic production that sits somewhere in between acid, techno and deep house. "Crossing Dimensions" is an uplifting workout with a sweet vocal turn from an unknown source, and then "Jami Jam Dubb'd" finishes the record off with a primal set of ingredients working round a stout kick.

  4. Lady Blacktronika - "Chance Of Love" (4:53)
Review: Jenifa Mayanja and Dakini 9's Sound Warrior label continues to fly the flag for female house producers, this time inviting North Carolina DJ Lady Fingers to make an appearance with the smoky throwdown of "Depth". Mayanja herself then steps up with the ethereal, broken beat tones of "Get Off My Back," Berlin-based Ena Lind takes things in a dramatic, evocative direction on "High & Over" before Lady Blacktronika delivers her inimitable style of shimmering house music with the hi-hat shaking "Chance Of Love." Executed with warmth and intrigue, the Warrior Formulation 12" is another direct hit for Sound Warrior - as if we expected anything less.

  1. Diatonic Scale (5:38)
  2. Tetratonic Scale (R2pi remix) (5:05)
  3. Tetratonic Scale (5:41)
Review: La Rioja in Spain may not be thought of as a hotbed of avant garde techno and electronica, but Psychoskunk has been quietly issuing an uncompromising salvo of proudly underground releases since as far back as 2004. Error Etica, an alias from label boss Victor Martinez, is at the controls for this tenth vinyl release on the label, and he's sounding as proudly left of centre as ever. "Diatonic Scale" locks into an insistent groove, but the real magic of the track lies in the grubby notes punching their way around the drums, capped off with artful distortion that gives a wonderful bite to the production. "Tetratonic Scale" keeps things fuzzy but blows the rhythms wide open for a more poised, patient kind of techno incantation. R2pi's remix of the track meanwhile clamps it back in order with a stern beat and a slow-release minimalism guiding the evolution of the track.

  1. Eko - "M'Ongele M'Am"
  2. Georges Ouedraogo - "Deni"
Review: Mukatsuku's ongoing "Afro Series" continues with a fine limited edition 45 containing two funk-fuelled floor-fillers. In fact, you'll struggle to find a more celebratory and life-affirming workout than Eko's "M'Ongele M'Am" licensed from Nubiphone & Africa Seven, a Makossa-fired Afro-disco gem rich in punchy horns, driving Afro-boogie bass, lilting synthesizer lines, Mariachi style trumpet solos and the kind of chant-along vocals that should put a smile on the face of even the most miserable of dancers. Over on side B, Georges Ouedraogo's "Deni" is an essential Clavinet-happy killer chunk of Afro-funk/Afro-Disco fusion from Burkina Faso. 3. Tominori Hosoya - "Paradise"
  4. George P - "Deep Space"
Review: Astute wax enthusiast Brothers' Vibe brings forth the third installment of his Mixx Split series, meant to cast light on what the multi-label boss is notorious for: soulful house music! Also signing the opening track 0.95Lonliness', the American prodigy takes us on a deep incursion, skillfully layering classic house beats over uplifting sounds into a heart racing groove. Newcomer Eddie Merced follows up with a deep and dreamy offering, infusing trancy vibes into a futuristic bassline for a full 6:29 minutes of 'Midtown Cruisin''. Delving further into the deep ambient realm, Japanese producer Tominori Hosoya doles out some tribal sounds for his spatial track "Paradise". Closing tune "Deep Space" gives away just a bit of the surprise in its title, as George P injects his signature Tech House oomph in a contrasting murky bassline.

  3. Spiral Tribe Cuts (part 2) (7:58)
Review: Alexander Kowalski has been immersed in techno for a long time, and his sound is massively representative of the reduced, late night Berlin sound. As d_func. he's contributed many times to Marcel Heese's Finitude label, and now he's back to pay tribute to UK free party techno legends Spiral Tribe. Kowalski's own interpretation may be more minimal and hypnotic than the wild, raucous energy Spiral Tribe was best known for, but his trancey approach comes on like a nostalgic vision into the early 90s, while also aligning with the modern masters such as Donato Dozzy and Peter Van Hoesen.

Review: It's been a while since something new from Dave Ellesmere surfaced, but the multifaceted artist has been tasked by the ever on-point Brothers' Vibe to lay down a few serious slabs of club tackle for Mixx Records. "Caught In A Moment" heads straight into tripped out techno territory, all urgent cyclical rhythm and head-teasing FX, but the mood is drastically different on the chord led 909 thumper "Universal Vibe". "From Now On Only Good Things Will Happen" once again channels the edgy Robert Hood style to great effect before Brothers' Vibe takes over for a deliciously dusty, meandering remix of "Universal Vibe".

Review: Eric Cloutier launched Palinoia last year with a single of his own, but now he's turned to Berlin mainstays Exercise One to lay down some of their trademark psychoactive machine music for the second installment. "Heptagon" sports metallic synth notes clanging out over a freight train of techno drums, while "Prism" takes a more nimble approach to twist out its various synthetic squeaks. "Nitrogen" is a warmer proposition, placing the emphasis on chords and melodies while still aiming squarely at the dancefloor. "Thirty Four" finds the duo veering away from the 4/4 dogma to deliver a captivating kind of broken techno in a soundscape loaded with tension and ominous empty space.

Review: Legendary Austrian experimental label Laton has been kickstarted back into action for the first time since 2015 - the last release being DJ Sotofett 's TDD-DDRR-IPP MIX. The Sex Tags Mania boss returns to hand in a moody smack electro remix of Andreas Burger's "Device C" from 1996, while the mysterious Ectro Usic delivers one of the more innovative electro tracks we've heard in a while. "Kratal" (Upspeed mix) is a mean and distorted mutation, that's easy on the more oft-used detroit cliches but heavy on the distortion/overdrive and getting 'off the grid' in aggressive fashion.

Review: Long running dub dons Nice Up! unveil a brand new talent on their latest: that man is Escape Roots, a Glaswegian producer and Mungo's HiFi's Walk n Skank resident who calls upon vocalist Dandelion to muse on the many different joys of ganga. Riding on classic dancehall rhythms with hooky guitar riffs and tumbling claps, Dandelion touches on toothpaste, butter, soap and the titular Ganga Socks. It's tongue in cheek, head in the clouds stuff that will have you skanking for days. For those who like it more stripped back, flipside "Version" is where it's at.

Review: The Synthetic Gold story continues to unfold in the most curious nooks and crannies of the minimal techno scene, as this third volume welcomes in tracks selected by Anestie Gomez. Khan is in a looped up, insistent cycle loaded with alien synth tones and a focused rhythmic hiccup of a beat, truly aiming for the psych-out end of the night. Eloi Brunelle makes things a touch funkier on "Neneh", deploying choice splashes of dubbed out colour in between the sharp strut of the drums. Andres Garcia then spreads himself across the B-side with the loping funk of "Invisivel", working all manner of freaky sounds around the scuffed sway of the beats.

Review: The Happy Skull label hasn't been afraid to look locally for inspiration, with The Kelly Twins sourcing some fine output from Bristol types Marco Bernardi, Rhythmic Theory, Kowton. But 12"s from Throwing Shade and Creta Kano suggests their feelers extend much further too! The latest Happy Skull release extends an invitation to Cologne and the severely under rated Andreas Gehm, a man who really knows how to abuse his acid lines to great effect. Lead track "Yes Or No" is the sort of cut you keep in your record box for the sweaty moments deep into a set when you really want to beat down the dancefloor. "Summer Time In Coloniae" does offer a more pensive side to Gehm's palette and perhaps inspired the Twin Peaks artwork on the 12", whilst closer "Going By" is ocean deep.

Review: The Untold Stories shine a light on another lesser known practitioner from the field of adventurous minimal techno. Sebastian Eduardo has been previously spotted on Crosiere Musique and Kommuna Tapes, so you can be assured of his quality, but this EP makes the perfect opportunity to hear just how rich his sound is. "Twelve D Soul Connection" shimmers with deft synth interplay and a dense fabric of crooked percussion. "UI Enhancement" channels the spirit of old-skool micro house to great effect, and then "Lyhne's Death (But The Flowers Are Laughing)" brings a tougher techno undercurrent to the trippy pings and wavy pads that dart around the top of the mix. The whole record is a richly detailed trip well worth your attention.

  3. Groaning Ghosts
Review: Edward's graceful take on modern house and techno is a perfect fit for Trelik, and the German producer sounds comfortable as he unfurls swooning threads of otherworldly music for the tripped out dancefloor. The "Ogermania Mx" of "Mikko" is a hazy, string soaked affair pitched somewhere warm and dreamlike, but there's plenty of energy churning away in the lower register. "Lottery" is a more twitchy affair for darker times, all moody bass bounce and looming drones around a shuffling set of percussion. "Groaning Ghosts" is the techiest of the bunch, and there's a whole lot of freaked out sound design swirling around in the mix as well. This is simply stunning, highly advanced dance music from a modern day maestro.

Review: The 4th and final part of Hudd Traxx 10th Anniversary series comes from Ekkohaus, Mihai Popoviciu, Rio Padice & JT Donaldson. Previous parts featured tracks from the likes of Chez Damier, Agnes, Iron Curtis & Luna City Express. Part 4 keeps the high standards that Hudd have set and Ekkohaus steps up to open proceedings. 'Modest Fun' is a peak time house cut with a big sub bass, shuffling hats and lush keys to boot. Mihai Popoviciu's 'Two Minutes Ago' plays a hypnotic Xylophone hook mixed with the dreamy vocal chant of 'Don't stop, let's go' to round off the 'Now' side in a classy fashion. Rio Padice & JT Donaldson close out the EP on the 'Then' side being 2 of the label's biggest sellers to date. Hudd Traxx have been swamped with requests for a repress of Rio Padice's 'Dirty Belvedere' so it was a no brainer for this to make the cut. JT Donaldson's 'Just Bounce' was played by any DJ worth their salt in 2009, and it's clear to see why, as once you've listened once, it goes on repeat a good few times. A great way to close out this 4 Part 10th Anniversary series.

This latest one sees Dubmatix lay down a stepper's riddim with a deep bassline that rumbles on for days. Kazam Davis and Exile Di Brave both feature to drop some raggedy arsed chants on "High Life", then things get more colourful and psyched-out on the flip thanks to a knob-twiddling and vital dub mix from Dubmatix. Bass doesn't come much heavier than this one, so snap it up and get it dropped.
